Oprah-palooza

Posted: Monday, December 10, 2007 9:20 AM by Mark Murray

“OMentum” is the New York Post headline on the Oprah-Obama events this weekend in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. “In her first foray into politics, Oprah drew nearly 70,000 people in appearances with Obama over the weekend at two events in Iowa, one in South Carolina and one last night in New Hampshire, where about 8,500 supporters showed up. As people streamed into the Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC, they were each handed a slip of paper. On the front was a list of four South Carolina voters to call using their cellphones, and on the back was a script touting Obama.”

The Los Angeles Times notes how Oprah and Obama tailored the message for the South Carolina audience yesterday. "Winfrey and Obama appealed directly to that demographic, peppering their speeches with ‘y'all’ and ‘you folks.’ They made several references to church attendance, beauty parlors and God, and quoted the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr."

The Washington Post's Balz notes, “Winfrey drew responses of ‘no’ and ‘nonsense’ when she said there are those who say the youthful Obama, who is in his third year in the Senate, should wait for his turn before seeking the presidency. The cries turned to cheers and applause as she continued: ‘Think about where you'd be in your life if you waited when the people told you to. I wouldn't be where I am if I waited on the people who told me it couldn't be.’”

NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli was in Manchester for the last stop of Oprah-palooza. Obama’s speech was largely the same, Memoli reported, except for one acknowledgement early in the speech. Obama welcomed members of the AFL-CIO, who he said were his special guests. “They’re here at my request, as my special guest because the Verizon Wireless Arena does not hire stagehands who are union workers,” Obama told the crowd. “This is a great facility, and we should have union workers in here to make sure that the stagehands are getting a fair shake.”

The Los Angeles Times on Oprah-Obama in Iowa on Saturday: "The 50-minute rally in Des Moines was a potent hybrid of pop and politics; of hope and self-help admonition (‘I am not here to tell you what to think,’ she said. ‘I am here to ask you to think’) peppered with subtle digs at Obama's main opponent, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York. ‘Experience in the hallways of government isn't as important to me as experience on the pathway of life,’ she said.”

The Columbia State: “Winfrey wows crowd.”

The Boston Globe called it a “watershed moment.”

Newsweek's Fineman believes Oprah outshone Obama.

no way can Obama win...no talent, no experience...no shows for votes in senate...Oprah go home.....PEOPLE WAKE UP ALL SHE CARES ABOUT IS HE IS BLACK....DON'T LET HOLLYWOOD LEAD US TO THE POLLS!!!!

I love Oprah and Obama. I think that they are a great team. The world is not ready for a women president and the news needs to stop portraying her like she is well ahead in the polls. We need someone with a new perspective. I agree with Oprah when she says that Obama brings much more to our world.I think Obama's lack of experience will be beneficial because he is not tainted by old politics. We need a change and Obama is that person who will allow us to change.
Suzanne it is obvious you don't have a clue about anything. Obama is going to win. Hillary definetely will not win. Obama is charismatic and beyond intelligent. Oprah is the best. Oprah is not a part of Hollywood. If you watched her show you would know that she does not care about things like race. Oprah supports Obama because she believes in him and what he can do for our country.
As far as I'm concerned if you can't bring the voters into your camp without a big shot celebrity, you have no business being president.

Cindy
The New York Post is a conservative rag that WANTS Obama to be the nominee.
Be smart people!

You got it right, J Merle.  And the liberals in the democratic party are going to fall for it.. forgetting what the tried and true formula for democratic wins in Presidental elections has always been... MODERATE candidates.
Why is it that Oprah is only a feminist when it has nothing to do with race?  I haven't decided who to vote for yet, but I think the only reason that Oprah is backing Obama is the color of his skin.  Honestly, I think she should stay out of politics, and go back to interviewing celebrities and giving away cars.
It was much better and Oprah was more attractive when she did not support any political candidate.  What happens if Mr. Obama does something that is not favorable to the public eye?  Oprah will feel the backlash and her ratings will suffer accordingly.  Also, celebrity is a false truth to reality. It's a show and not the real world.

I don't particularly care for the democratic party, nor do I bathe in politics, however, I want what is best for the country and a candidate who does not honor our country or God as our father has no business pretending he does.
I am tired, tired, tired of Oprah. Is there ANYTHING she will leave alone?  I don't care who she supports for President, I'll make up my own mind without having to be "Oprah-ized." Interesting how she loves to play the race card when it suits her.....
If Obama would have been a white man, Oprah would not even taked a second look at the man. I know Oprah does a lot of good but she is "BLACK FOR BLACK " regardless.

Sorry, that is my opinion and I nothing against anybody.
The world is not ready for a women president

Hey Terrelle, just to correct you there, the "world" already has several women heads of state.  Nice try on that one.  And by the way, the UNITED STATES of AMERICA will be ready for a woman president when the voters say so.. we won't let stupid, outdated prejudices define our choices.. or Oprah, define our choices, for that matter.
Hillary has done her time at the white house. One is only allowed to run this country for 8 years.
Obama  NEVER,
If either win ...... It's hello Australia, I have seen this country go down hill enough with Bush.
I suggest America make a smart choice this time.If the democrats are divided, there is no chance for a win. Sorry but it's a reality that clinton has more chance to win than Obama... Think smart and be united...
I love Mr. Obama not for his color, not because he is a man but because he appears to be what we need, I am in hopes for the future. The only thing better would be Oprah herself her kindness and concern for this country as well as others bars none!
If Oprah doesn't matter, then why have all the presidential candidates for the last two election cycles made time to meet her on her show?

Anyone who can get millions of people to read more is not a evil or bad.

Also to quote Winston Churchill:

"Seek large personalities and unconventional types; ignore seniority."

Also considering that he met with Mayor Bloomberg and Sen. Chuck Nagel (and paid for lunch and leaving large tips) tells me that he can bring groups together to achieve common goals. Those meetings were just plain smart.

Obama is looking a lot better to me.
Am I the only person out here who finds Oprah extremely racist?
Would she even pay attention to a white candidate that was an upstanding person?
I'm sick of her racial bias.

Yes, you are the only one. I'll suggest you consult your psychology.
I don't see the big issue about Oprah supporting Obahma. Why does it have to be about the race. Because she is African American. If Chuck Norris supported Obahma would it be him supporting his Caucasian side? Let's focus on who would be best for the country and who can clean up all this havoc that has happened in the last several years.I will not support Hilary because she is a woman and I will not base my views on Obahma because, he is part African American. it will be based upon who I think can be fair race and gender should not be the issue. this country needs a strong leader. People also feel that Hilary will win because, Bill was popular that could be possible. To be honest  I would have love to see Obahma and Hilary do the President and Vice President thing together. Go Figure.
I expected more from Oprah in her visit to Des Moines. I was disappointed to see her reading her speech from a paper.  I expected her to be articulate and well versed enough to not need to do that.   She was followed by Mr. Obama who didn't need notes.  He impressed me more than she did and I think he did himself proud.  He doesn't need her.  I was and still am for Ms. Clinton but his words, spoken from the heart, impressed me.
It is very funny that a man who says he is qualified and ready to lead this country needs OPRAH to run the race for him. People really like OPRAH but I hope they don't vote because OPRAH is behind obama and think they are going to get a free car or something... obama should be ashamed! This is serious shiat, it's not a book or something that you can say vote for this because OPRAH likes it, this is very important and I hope people see that the true leader and the one and only one who can beat the repugs is HILLARY CLINTON; OUR NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE US OF A!!! nuff said!

Wow!! you can see Hillary Clinton supporters crying fowl....lol... I thought Hillary got the endorsement of Barbara Streisand; tell her to stump for Hillary Clinton.
What?! Obama is using a celebrity's popularity to reach voters???? OUTRAGEOUS!!!! UNPRECEDENTED!!!! Chillax, people.
It was all about soul. Soul sister rooting for soul brother. Oprah (and I am a great fan)went all the way to South Africa to empower women and now refuses to affirm the ultimate; a woman in the white house!
Is Oprah racist?
Popular Culture for President!! It really does not matter that Obama is sophomoric at best. This phenonema is truly a reflection of the "dumming down" of our population. It's looking like the movie script "Idiocracy" is an accurate vision of our future.
Winfrey is doing nothing but promoting the black agenda. She can see herself with Obama at the White House every weekend if he gets elected, which he won't! Obama is nothing more than a propped up black messiah. I for one would NEVER vote for him. He doesn't have the experience.
Oprah is endorsig Obama because he has the potential to be the first black president and she wants in on the ground floor so she do the "black thing."
Let's face it America!  We need a change and we need a person who is above reproach with honesty and very little ties to "washington old school."  Senator Obama has integrity and yes it is time!  Think about how the rest of the world will look at us with a Black President!  I know it will be very favorable!!!
We need to get back the admiration and respect of the world! God knows we've lost it big time!
I think it is a shame that in oprahs life time she could not come out for anyone other than her own race. This makes me feel that in Oprahs eyes thier has never been a white person good enough for her to support on a national scale. (SIMLY AMAZING)Obama will not get my support not matter what.
Oprah is doing what everyone else does...Stump for their candidate.  Why the fuss?  Kennedy had the rat-pack.  Reagan had Hollywood. Even sports personalities are involved. Curt Shilling was doing his part for Bush.  A candidate will use any successfull, legal means available to him.  Isn't the governator Arnold going to do hi part for the Republican nominee.
I have never heard of Oprah backing up any other candidates until Obama. What a coincidence!
People need to understand that Obama is about changing the dynamic of our country, of politics, and ultimately the world and anyone who has said even once, that things need to really change need to be listening to him as he is the one that can do it.  I like Hillary too (mostly because I love Bill) but she has been in the game for a long time and is part of the problem unfortunately.  Obama is the change we need and if you truly listen to him; you recognize it.  Lack of experience is really lack of Washingtonian politics and I can't see many people not thinking that isn't exactly what we need.  Lets get some new fresh faces in our government at a time when we need it most.  He is smarter than most and unbiased.  I pray we put him in the white house as that will be the first step in making some real difference in our country for probably the first time since the days of MLK and JFK.
It is quite sad that Obama does not feel that he or what he stands for is important enough for people to listen to without the help of someone like Oprah.  It looks as if he and Oprah are both playing the race card.
I TELL YA , OBAMA IS NOT REAL BRIGHT. GET A CLUE. THE FOLKS GOING IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND EVERYWHERE ELSE THAT OPRAH IS, ARE GOING TO SEE HER NOT OBAMA. DON'T GET MWE WORNG, HE IS A WELL SPOKEN BLACK MAN, AND OTHERS IN HIS RACE COULD LEARN A THING OR TOO FROM HIM. BUT AS A COUNTRY WE ARE NO WAY READY FOR A BLACK MUSSLIM PRESIDENT.
Oprah says she finally found a candidate that she could endorse. U mean that out of ALL the previous elections NO ONE interested her?
Could it be that Obama is African American?
Oprah is one of the biggest bigots around. She does flock people to see her but they should be wary of why she is endorsing him.
It is beautiful to see freedom of speech being used in this great Nation. Sadly we continue to see faults of everyone. If that is the case, "cast the first stone!" I wonder will we all remember what any candidate did well. Or will we focus more on the bad. Because it seems the bad is all everyone is harping on., especially what Obama did 6-12 months ago. Can you remember what you ate two days ago less than remembering what someone did 6-12 months ago? “Time for a change” that is an understatement  if we focused  more on the failure than how are we ready for a change? Let’s start by helps all not just one group or race but all, like this great nation of ours. Oprahabama Hype is kool if you are tried of it don’t read about. Save yourself the stress and everyone else of hearing you bicker over it. “Godspeed!”  Oprahabama
If you are having any difficulty recognizing the credibility of Obama and Oprah, go back up and read again the post from CitizenJ.

Let Oprah help you choose Christmas gifts and books, but you have to explain to the 291 Million who do NOT watch her show why in heaven's name you would allow her to tell you who to cast your Presidential vote for!!  On what do you base her credibility in this area?
It is soooooooo funny that when Senator Obama gets a big endorsement, suddenly all the other candidates and their "supporters" are against endorsements. lol

Whatever.

I just glad to see so many people taking interest in the campaign.  Everyone should learn about all the candidates and vote their conscience.  Our future depends on it.  If this is what it takes to get Americans fired up about an election, so be it!  MAKE SURE YOU ARE REGISTERED TO VOTE AND VOTE!!!!!

If you are unaware of what the USA is currently fighting for, I am sorry to tell you, you want know if someone tells you.

Is it democracy?  How do you fight for some ones else democracy when you don't have it, or your government don't uphold it within its own system.

Is it human rights?  The USA has not, does not and will never uphold human rights for black citizens.

Is it fair elections?  Surley you jest!

Is it money, oil and a bloted captial structure built to support whites under the guise of 9/11?  You make the call!

OBAMA BELIEVES N GAY MARRIAGES AND ABORTIONS
Both Obama and Oprah are a joke. I have never thought much of her anyway and now this assures me that as a true born again believer in The Lord Jesus Christ that I am 100% right about both of them.
Roger Gilliam
Im glad to see how all they want is to lead this country into the future. To say the least, they are playing the race card. The people in this country have made the both of them rich. But both would rather lend thier names to foriegn countries that let thier people starve. What have they done for the underprivledged in this country, and I dont mean by bringing over foriegn children for adoption, We made them what they are, what will they do for the middle and lower class american that dont have jobs and will or are going to lose thier homes and everything they are working for to foriegn trade agreements.I guarantee you you they wont help me from lossing everything I own. It wouldnt benefit them at all.
Oprah want like it when the new Dem taxes hit the
street. She better think twice. Still wondering why
she never supported anyone before, and now seems
she has to get into politics?
I am excited about the two O's working together for CHANGE!  Democracy calls for all people in every walk of life TO WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE.  In order for true democracy, everyone's voice should be heard.  I am ready to roll up my sleeves and do what I can for the cause and for OBAMA...
She should simply keep her big fat ass in the Oprah Studios where it belongs.  She knows about as much about politics and the plight of the middle class as I do about the rings of Saturn.
Stay in Chicago Dope-rah.
YES, OBVIOUSLY OBAMA IS USING THE POPULARITY OF OPERA TO GET VOTES. WHY CAN'T HE PRESENT FACTS AND LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE!DOES O'BAMA THINK WE ARE ALL THAT IGNORANT! I AM AN HISPANIC WOMEN VOTER AND I HAVE A QUALIFIED- GOVERNOR RICHARDSON RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT AND I'M STILL  CONSIDERING ALL CANDIDATES BUT THIS ISSUE OF OPERA STEPPING IN SUPPORTING OBAMA REALLY OPENS MY EYES THAT THIS COUNTRY AND HER STILL ARE STILL VERY BIAS.CAUCASIN SHOULD NOT MATTER IT'S THE QUALIFICATIONS THAT MATTERS.HAS OBAMA NEGOTIATED ANY PEACE MATTERS FOR THIS COUNTRY!AND WHEN HAS
OPERA EVER STEPPED IN ON POLITICS? SHE STEPPING IN NOW BECAUSE OF OBAMA'S CAUCASION
Oprah needs to stick with the celebrity interviewing and stay out of politics. She is only backing Obama because of his race. Plain and simple. If Obama was not in the running she would be linked up with Hillary to get the female vote.
the only change that obama would and could bring is the color of his skin... oprah is behind obama because of this and only this. i agree obama is well spoken and educated unlike dubya bush "childrens do learn", and he has been in the background planning his moves all along (probably since kindergarten), he has made a lot of good moves but that in itself does not qualify him to be prez. HILLARY CLINTON is the only one who can beat the repugs and is the only one who will and will be in the whitehouse come January 2009!
I am a black woman who attended the SC rally. I am a Hillary supporter but went to see if Obama could change my mind.  I didn't go to the rally to see Oprah because I am not a fan of Oprah AT ALL!  The crowd had a lot of white people.  They said there were hispanics and asians, but I didn't see any.  It was about 40,000 people (guestimate).  The rally was extremely well orchestrated in terms of getting the people in, getting information from people, getting people to make phone calls for them.  That was real slick.  Great strategy.  But when Oprah started talking about the blackness, that was a turn off to me. Don't talk to me (a black person) "now" because I know you are only talking to black people because "you" have an agenda. Obama is supposed to be a candidate for all people and he needs to make sure that anyone who is speaking on his behalf realizes that too.  They should have looked in the audience to see all my white brothers and sisters out there.  Black people can truly be racist sometimes.  By the way, he hasn't convinced me to vote for him yet.  His age or time spent in Congress doesn't have anything to do with my decision.
Oh brother, now the Dems have to decide who the candidate is! Is it Obama or Oprah? In any case Oprah should distance herself from this guy.....she is being used.
Is it just possible Clinton is attempting to use the Internet to attack both Obama and Opraha?! Wow, big mistake. Swinging republicans over to him as well as Demos that I know.

Obama is a refreshing change to the Capitol Hill BS which Clinton is just more of the same old same old.

I am a 27 year stead fast Republican but will switch over this time for in my humble opinion there is no one better, smarter and who will be held to tighter standards than Obama. He is an honest man (which Clintons have never been known for). Refreshing change to the disaster of Bush who I have met and voted for... what a shame.

The question is are we truly living in a military controlled environment with Black Water and all Bush has done that will prevent truth, liberty and justice due to a few (vs. the people of the United States of America votes actually counting)?
