Huck ads, drops 'Christian Leader'

Posted: Monday, December 10, 2007 1:32 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy
Huckabee will begin airing two new ads tomorrow. "A New America" will air in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, while "Secure Borders" will air only in Iowa. His three-state ad seems almost like a reintroduction to voters in the early primary states, now that Huckabee has a little more money and the spotlight shining on him due to recent polls.

The ad touts Huckabee's positive vision for America's future and his desire to leave the next generation "an America that's even greater than our grandparents gave us." The ad shows the candidate sitting on a couch and talking into a camera interspersed with images of Huckabee as a child. There are also the ubiquitous images of Americana, like a smiling mother and her son sitting on a stoop, a mother pushing her daughter in a swing and a factory worker being lifted up in a cherry-picker. Words displayed over the pictures trumpet Huckabee's accomplishments as governor, such as being labeled one of the best governors in America by Time Magazine.

But both ads also does something else -- they drop “Christian Leader” from the titles on the screen. “Proven Leader” is, instead, substituted.

"Secure Borders" is Huckabee's version of the anti-illegal immigration ad that many of GOP candidates seem to be making this cycle. In it are clips of Huckabee decrying amnesty and sanctuary cities at the Values Voters Summit in Washington, DC, in October, also a subtle reminder of his Christian conservatism.

The ad also shows Huckabee sitting on the same couch using a line from his stump speech to call for increased border security: "It ought to be at least as difficult to get across an international border as it is to get on an airplane in our own hometown." The words on the screen say that Huckabee will "fight to secure our borders," because he is a "proven leader" and an "authentic conservative."

This last line closes the ad, while Huckabee is shown leaning up against a fence on what looks like a farm, talking to man who looks like he could be a farmer. With this ending Huckabee seems to be slightly modifying Fred Thompson's "consistent conservative" line -- with the same intention of pointing out all of the 'inauthentic' conservatives in the race.

*** UPDATE *** NBC's Kelly O'Donnell adds that on campaign cash, Team Huckabee has a new goal to raise $1.1 million by December 15th. Campaign advisors say $598,000 has been raised as of this writing.

Wow- Ron Paul dosen't seem to have any of these "religion issues".  Maybe he should get some attention in the media.  hat's who people want to hear about- but since Ron Paul's name is in this comment it will most likely be deleted. Apparently the media has no interest in someone that won't make interesting news and sell their product with drama.
The adds should also note that he's the least educated presidentical candidate, that he doesn't even have a real college education, and that he's an evolution denying idiot.
Ed, I have never known First Read to delete comments simply because they are about Ron Paul.  In fact, when he had that big fundraising day back in November, there were hundreds of comments to that item alone talking about Dr. Paul.

Maybe you should get your facts straight about First Read before you make statements that are incorrect.
The adds should also note that he's the least educated presidentical candidate, that he doesn't even have a real college education, and that he's an evolution denying idiot.

I agree 100%
still won't vote for him
Mike Huckabee isn't a fiscal conservative.. He has a record of tax hikes (an estimated half a billion dollars) and favoring amnesty for illegal immigrants (including supporting a measure giving them drivers licenses).. he was already under investigation for ethics violations.. and his pardoning of a rapist is coming back to haunt him. In a prior debate he stated that he would enter a war with Iran without the consent of Congress and if elected he will raise taxes and sink the US into more debt..
This is to Pat Huntington from NY~just because someone denies evolution, does not make them an idiot.  Even Darwin admitted that it's only a theory.  Just because you don't agree with another person does not make them any less of a person either.  For instance, I think that the word "ad" is spelled with one "d" and you put two.  Do I think you're an idiot?
Macro evloution is dead as a religion.Calling him an idiot only exposes your lack knowledege concerning  this subject. There is not any evidence supporting Macro evolution.i.e life coming from rocks. please refrain from calling anyone an idiot.
Two words for you Huckabee...Willie Horton!
Did you happen to see that he is also in favor of eliminating the IRS?  Have you read into Fair Tax proposal yet?  Check that stuff out before you make your opinion.
Again, obvious media slant leaving out Ron Paul. Whatever, we'll see come primary time I suppose.
"now that Huckabee has… the spotlight shining on him due to recent polls"

huh?  Oh… I guess FR wasn’t shining the spotlight on him before his recent poll improvement.  Ha!

does FR even recognize its own bias?

In what way is Ric Flair or Chuck Norris notable, yet the Ron Paul blimp is irrelevant?

Btw, your recent post boosting Huckabee while saying “forget… the Ron Paul Revolution” was clever advertising… FR doesn’t do a front page post of Ron Paul for a month, then as soon as practical, take a swipe at his campaign while boosting Huckabee.
His fair tax proposal raises taxes for the middle class, there's nothing fair about it..
Good to see him getting some press, he has some great ideas. It's funny how being religious is now somehow a bad thing, I'm not religious at all yet support Huckabee and his goals. What does this article have to do with Ron Paul btw? Did you respond to the wrong article Mr. Burgess?
The Rev. Huckabee isn't a conservative. Too much in love with taxes and big government.
While a moral conservative, Huckabee's social, fiscal, and economic track record is anything but. His "New America" would be replete with illegal immigrants, social engineering, and wars of aggression. Unfortunately, that's not new, it's been the status quo for quite a long time.

Let's just get back to basics and resurrect the Republic. Ron Paul is the only candidate with a Congressional voting record that matches the promises.

First, excuse my typo. Second, yes, if you deny evolution you are an idiot.  It was a theory for Darwin, but since he stated his theory, we've found concrete evidence in the fossil record.  Third, the last thing you want is a president who denies evolution because it says something about his views on the sciences, a field of study Americans are falling way behind other countries, especially China and India.  So yes, my dear, anyone who denies evolution is an idiot indeed.
Kuccinich is the real man in this race. He will not take money from corporate interests and wants free healthcare and an end to lobbyists. Just what every American wants. But he doesn't have the money to play real politics because he cut out the corporate interests.
Ahh, so many people who failed basic science.  Please learn what the word "Theory" means.  Gravity is a "theory".  Do you believe gravity isn't real?  All scientific discoveries are theories.  All of them.  In science terminology, the word "theory" is an exact synonym of the word "fact".  You flat-Earth types are funny.  Evolution is science, ID is Creationism/religion.  The two can co-exist.  Science answers "How", religion answers "Why?"  Deal with it.
Anybody who favors tax increases in this day and age is a nutcase.
The theory of evolution is the cornerstone to scientific study.

The creation theory is a fairytale. Upon which theocracries use it to try and dispel any notion that deviates from thier dogma.

So yes, if he denies that which is the cornerstone of science for a fairytale, then yes he is and IDIOT!
All the bantering aside, Mike Huckabee isn't a fair enough man to be president. He is a very biased man against those who aren't of his belief system, his color and his sexuality. Watch out for those who are not of "his world".
Pat--I just wanted to remind you that this is America where we give anybody a chance.  So many of our great leaders and success stories past and present and hopefully future were just regular guys (without real college educations) who did great things.  I'd bet they have a better grasp of the issues real people face, a different type of experience.  It's funny that people will criticize the Harvard educated professorial B.H. Obama for being lofty and other people will criticize Huckabee for not being lofty enough.  Well, I say if they can get things done, why not?  I just didn't want you to lose sight of one of the tenets of our country, that anybody can.

Bolivian President Evo Morales and indian and coca farmer has, according to the Daily Show, accomplished what he claimed, even though hr ran without the so-called necessary experience or education.  I hate to compare the U.S. with Bolivia though, but it seemed an intersting tidbit.

The Huckabee/religion thing is, I won't lie, an issue for m, and I am questioning and will continue to question.  While I disappoint many because I refuse to have faith, many disappoint me because they won't have science.  When I look at Huckabee, it seems to me like he understands that not everybody shares his view, and he's not just running for a particular population of the country.
Although, his faith is important to him.  Times when he is being inclusive of other faiths or as this thread states the dropping of Christian leader--especially when running for the religions GOP nomination, makes me think that he gets it and can be fair about such.
HA HA HA HA HA!!!  I'm with Heather Brock - YA gotta laugh at the comment from "Pat Huntington - NY" calling Huckabee an idiot because he doesn't support her views of evolution (never mind that there remains no archeological proof to support the "evolution" of one entirely different species from another; let alone the problematic explanation for where "soul" plays in the formula), PLUS the fact that, yes - - Huntington is apparently, uh, well-educated enough to misspell "Ad" as "Add".  Enough said.
HUCKABEE WORRIES ME!
(So does the I.Q. level of Iowans who have him leading in that state!) He's an incompentant (see FOREIGN POLICY), pompous (see the mom of the murdered child who Hucky let back on the streets for political gain) UNCHRISTIAN (see him trying to play God and say who IS AND ISN'T A Christian! The only good news is that the rest of the country will see him for the charatain he is!

Please republicans, nominate Huckabee as your candidate.  This way a Democrat in the White House is ensured indeed!  Can we say democrat electoral landslide!
Anybody who favors tax increases in this day and age is a nutcase.

Yeah. It makes perfectly good sense to keep cutting taxes as we are spending billions of dollar a week fighting some idiot son of an asshole's war. After all we won't have to pay for it, our children and grandchildren will. Hedgefund managers shouldn't have to pay thier fairshare of taxes, let them stay at below 20%, those that earn in a year what HF managers steal in a day will make up for it.

I take that back....Jerry your an IDIOT!
P.S.  Ms. Huntington of New York apparently needs to attend a class field trip to India and China for a first-hand view of very sad, seemingly endless impoverishment (check out their hospitals while you're there - it's pretty sobering) before providing her "educated" observation about how America is "falling behind" these countries.  Please!!
After all Pat....

America voted for a peanut farmer once.....

He (or she) that brings the best message wins the gold.
I want a President that quarantines the rapists and murderers and not the sick people!  Huckabee frees any rapist and murderer who claims to be "Born Again".
It is such a shame to see uneducated people leaving public messages. Mike Huckabee is very well educated...was a student of one of my heroes... and does not favor raising taxes as President... and anyone who feels the flat tax would raise what we pay as middle class america should really look more into what you are claiming. Flat tax means you pay for what you use, whether you are middle class, upper or lower class; whether you are a citizen or not. Really, people, education is so very important. And ignorance should not be confused with "idiot"... no name calling. Just stating the facts. Mike Huckabee is an excellent candidate. Like each of them, he is human; not perfect. Let's take a long look at the FACTS on EACH candidate and choose a true LEADER who will carry us through the next phase of life as we know it in the GREAT U S of A!
I think that Mr. Huckabee is just what we need in this race.  He's a man who doesn't make excuses for his stands on anything.  He has explained himself well and has remained cool calm and collected.  He is what many politicians are afraid to be, honest.  I will vote for an honest guy, before one who just makes good sound bites anytime.  It has taken time for his message to catch on, because it's not real flashy, but it here now and I think most people will begin to warm up to the message.
If someone believes a certain way and has an opinion they must be an idiot.  I guess that makes Pat Huntington an idiot as well.  He has an opinion no matter how wrong he is.
Wow Pat and Jimmy... sounds like niether of you are very secure in your beliefs and ideas if you stoop to calling someone and idiot just because you do not agree with them.  Sounds like you are the very kind of "open minded" people that should dictate what everyone should think.

btw theory is not another way of saying fact... fact does that just fine, and there has been no "concrete" evidence to either prove or disprove the THEORY or evolution.  Please refraim from calling people names just because they don't believe the same as you... it just makes you seem intolerant.

That said, is Gov. Huckabee the right person for the job?  I don't know, rather I am keeping an open mind and hearing the candidates out.  As for getting rid of the IRS and instead going for a "consumption tax"... it is an interesting idea and I am all for it as long as it does not tax food and medicine, aside from that it would relieve the tax burden from some and make others pay more (after all the sales tax on a limo has got to be higher than the tax on my honda).

Keep the debate respectful everyone, the great thing about our country is that it brings in EVERYONE with many ideas and beliefs, and it does not (or should not) belittle others for not thinking the same as others.
I am disappointed that Mr. Huckabee is dropping "Christian" from his ads - I like him as a candidate because he hasn't hide his Christianity
Joe in South Carolina - - please define "charatain".  I can't find it in the dictionary . . .
Heather Brock, East Liverpool, OH says, "...just because someone denies evolution, does not make them an idiot."

You are absolutely correct on that point, Heather.

"Even Darwin admitted that it's only a theory."

I'm not sure if you're using "theory" as a pejorative. Likewise, gravity is a theory. What you may not realize is that scientific theories are formed as a result of observation of phenomena and taking of measurements, followed by a hypothetical explanation, followed by more measurements and testing, followed by a refined theory able to make predictions, followed by more controlled testing to prove the theory correct, and so on. The process never stops and the testing can be duplicated and verified by any doubters; that often strengthens the proof. That said, gravitational theory is well proven as is evolutionary theory because of their long-standing acceptance via confirmation by peers in the scientific community.

"I think that the word 'ad' is spelled with one 'd' and you put two.  Do I think you're an idiot?"

In this case, Heather, nice observation. You now have the most rudimentary basis for a hypothesis that "pat huntington ny" is lacking in either intelligence or education or both.
As an economist, I can tell you that his tax proposals are better than what we have now.  They make US products more competitive overseas, because we don't tax these products before they leave our shores.  This will create more demand for US products (because they are less expensive) and create job opportunities in the US.  Foriegn firms will also want to build a manufacturing base here because of it.  Wages will rise, and Americans will be better-off. I like Huckabee.  I am voting for him.
Ken L. "I see we have a man of the sciences". I agree with you 100%. As soon as a scientist tells me WHY a pencil falls when you drop it, I'll admit there is no more need for religion (or "spirituality" for people who don't like that word). I say this being a "scientist" myself.

Also, while I believe in evolution, it is not a cornerstone of science by any stretch. It is far removed from hard science (physics-math-chemistry).

What does this have to do with politics again?
Pat Huntington is a bigot.  Simply because Huckabee went to a Baptist college, Huntington asserts Huckabee doesn't have a real college education.  How naive.  This is another example of New York eastern elitism that makes the rest of the country sick.  Of course, we have a Yale educated president now.  That's really worked out well.
Why is it that people can get past the headlines!!!!  Mr. Huckabee din't release anybody!  The parole board released the prisioners and Mr. Huchabee was asked to grant full pardons.  He was invited to the hearing so that he could decide on full pardons.  He has nothing to do with the release.  He also denied the pardons also.  Please spend time looking past the headlines.
Pat,  I don't see how you can say Huckabee doesn't have a real education.  He has had just as much schooling as all of the other candidates!  Also, I am in college and will go on to graduate school and I think evolution is the biggest lie ever told.  THERE IS NO PROOF FOR EVOLUTION!  I gurantee everyone on this board that Pat cannot tell me one ounce of "proof" for evolution.  As for all of you others, talking about tax and the parole issue, get your facts straight.  I am from Arkansas.  Gov. Huckabee did an awesome job.  Otherwise he wouldn't have been called "America's best Governor" by Time Magazine.  Huckabee left Arkansas with a 800 million dollar surplus, refused to stay in the governors mansion, and it is worth noting that under Arkansas law the governor cannot let anyone off on parole.  Bill Clinton decided that when he was Governor of Arkansas and so he created the parole board.  Go get your facts straight, people.
Anyone denying evolution exists simply because the word "theory" falls before it is talking from ignorance. The whole artificial "debate" is only created by self proclaimed "look at me everyone, I'm for God", chest beating religious yahoos.  Evolution is real Mr Huckabee! Are you also going to sound stupid when debating the theory of gravity, the atomic theory, and the theory of relativity.
P.S.  Ms. Huntington of New York apparently needs to attend a class field trip to India and China for a first-hand view of very sad, seemingly endless impoverishment (check out their hospitals while you're there - it's pretty sobering) before providing her "educated" observation about how America is "falling behind" these countries.  Please!!
K.C. Heylin, Newport Beach, California

I invite you to pick up a scientific journal and compare the number of Singhs, Wangs, and Chans to Smiths, Browns, and Wilsons in the author lines and then come back and restate this response. (I know I'm substituting ethnicity for country, but bare with me here).
I can see why Huck has decided to hide his 'Crusader' aspect, but the 'Authentic' thing has me curious. Two seperate Republican Candidates are leaning on two seperate fences, talking to two seperate farmers. How do I know which candidate is 'Authentic'? How do I know if the farmers are 'Authentic'? How do I know if the fence is 'Authentic'? Let's say the farmers are actually farmers, but they are also clones. Then they would be 'Inauthentic' since they were copies, like a couple of VanGogh Sunflower copies. Who certifies Conservatives as 'Authentic', anyhow? Do they certify themselves? Just because they say they are, does that mean they are? Throughout the course of a Politicians' life, they say they are just about everything and everybody else is not. That makes them Certifiable, but not Authentic.
Matt Tyler, Bentonville, Arkansas (Sent Monday, December 10, 2007 2:55 PM)

there's no proof for evolution?  the fossil record is direct proof. You might want to rethink your own education. And no, Huckabee has no real college education, just some degree in bible study or theology. How that makes him smart enought to run this country escapes me.
Ommm...who cares?
Pat Huntington is a bigot.  Simply because Huckabee went to a Baptist college, Huntington asserts Huckabee doesn't have a real college education.  How naive.  This is another example of New York eastern elitism that makes the rest of the country sick.  Of course, we have a Yale educated president now.  That's really worked out well.

You need to read the dictionary and learn what a bigot is.  A bigot is not someone who thinks someone is unqualified to be president because he lacks education and denies a cornerstone of scientific truth but instead believes in supernatural hokus pokus creationism.  And I don't care if he got an education at Yale or the local community school down the block.  His education is 100% rooted in theology, which does nothing in terms of equiping him with the necessary knowledge to effectively govern this country.  And find a new phrase - NY eastern elitism.  Funny you say it makes the rest of the country sick. If it weren't for our elitism, we'ld be nothing but a bunch of rednecked ignorant hicks like you.
Anybody who favors tax increases in this day and age is a nutcase.
jerry/corpus christi texas (Sent Monday, December 10, 2007 2:27 PM)

Jerry, I'm rather fiscally conservative, especially when it comes to this blog.  Yet, on the other hand, some things are worth 'taxing and spending'.  That's value.  It seems to me that fiscal conservatives have gone too far overboard (drinking kool-aid *smiles*), that they have lost sight of value.

I'm no economist like Dane, but it seems to me an extension of evolution/survival of the fittest, so I like it as a social science, because it borrows from two things I understand: biology and common sense.  Anyway, I was explained this by somebody actually smart in economics ...

Imagine a graph with efficiency or benefit or value from our government on the vertical y-axis and taxes on the horizontal x-axis and draw a rainbow.  If taxes are 100%, nobody has any money and the benefit is low; and if taxes are 0%, the government cannot do anything an nothing gets done, likewise the benefit is low.  It is somewhere in the middle that we are taxed that benefit/value is high.  Before Reagan, we were on the 100% side of the rainbow, after, we switched to the 0% side of the rainbow.  Thus, we aren't at the peak, and adding taxes would move us in that direction towards the peak.  He was not a 'liberal' economist, pretty moderate politically I would say.  I'm just sharing information.
Huckabee is a televangelist turned politician, and if that isn't enough to make the hair on the back of your neck stand straight, I don't know what will.  The last thing we need is another zealot in the White house.

The only Republican that can win is Ron Paul.
