Huck ads, drops 'Christian Leader'

Posted: Monday, December 10, 2007 1:32 PM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under:

From NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy
Huckabee will begin airing two new ads tomorrow. "A New America" will air in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, while "Secure Borders" will air only in Iowa. His three-state ad seems almost like a reintroduction to voters in the early primary states, now that Huckabee has a little more money and the spotlight shining on him due to recent polls.

The ad touts Huckabee's positive vision for America's future and his desire to leave the next generation "an America that's even greater than our grandparents gave us." The ad shows the candidate sitting on a couch and talking into a camera interspersed with images of Huckabee as a child. There are also the ubiquitous images of Americana, like a smiling mother and her son sitting on a stoop, a mother pushing her daughter in a swing and a factory worker being lifted up in a cherry-picker. Words displayed over the pictures trumpet Huckabee's accomplishments as governor, such as being labeled one of the best governors in America by Time Magazine.

But both ads also does something else -- they drop “Christian Leader” from the titles on the screen. “Proven Leader” is, instead, substituted.

"Secure Borders" is Huckabee's version of the anti-illegal immigration ad that many of GOP candidates seem to be making this cycle. In it are clips of Huckabee decrying amnesty and sanctuary cities at the Values Voters Summit in Washington, DC, in October, also a subtle reminder of his Christian conservatism.

The ad also shows Huckabee sitting on the same couch using a line from his stump speech to call for increased border security: "It ought to be at least as difficult to get across an international border as it is to get on an airplane in our own hometown." The words on the screen say that Huckabee will "fight to secure our borders," because he is a "proven leader" and an "authentic conservative."

This last line closes the ad, while Huckabee is shown leaning up against a fence on what looks like a farm, talking to man who looks like he could be a farmer. With this ending Huckabee seems to be slightly modifying Fred Thompson's "consistent conservative" line -- with the same intention of pointing out all of the 'inauthentic' conservatives in the race.

*** UPDATE *** NBC's Kelly O'Donnell adds that on campaign cash, Team Huckabee has a new goal to raise $1.1 million by December 15th. Campaign advisors say $598,000 has been raised as of this writing.

Good summation of science and how evolution is accepted.  You are right on.  You clearly understand how science works.
Good argument biologist.  But um, I still don't believe in evolution because there was no proof in your statement.  Just what the word theory can mean.
I am just as tolerant as any war mongering, race baiting, homophobic christian leader. So now you can call me pastor Jim, or Reverend Jim.

After the past eight plus years of hearing right wing evangelical christians force thier dogma onto others through the government, yes I am a little venemous.

I am very secure in my beliefs by the way. I just don't believe in your god...... so quit throwing your beliefs on me. I haven't "dictated" what everyone else should think, my argument is the quite the opposite. I don't appreciate christians pushing thier beliefs on me or if I should borrow a phrase from Dick, Clarksburg WV, dictating "what everyone should think."
Too much< "Idiocy here.  Gravity is NOT a theory.  The rest has been well said.  When you show me the actual evolution of any animate thing or object, I will believe fully in it.  NO PROOF so stop calling people with beliefs idiots.  Now continue your spew of BS, Pat.
The real scary thing is that people actually like this guy.  He's so wrong for this country.  He's a bigot who hates anyone who's not a white hetero evolution denying racist baptist.  He needs to get on the next hay wagon and ride his rednecked butt back to Arkansas.
I don't need to rethink my education at all.  I know directly where I am going and am getting an education at an accredited university.  The fossil record actually hinders evolution more than it helps it because no "missing link" has ever been found.  Scientists use carbon dating to date fossils found but are now realizing that carbond dating doesn't work as well as they once thought it did.  Try again, please.
Ken L, New Haven CT I think you should "Please learn what the word "Theory" means" (www.dictionary.com).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsJmBevvR0Y

hey Pat, check this video out.  maybe it will help you see what the fossil record actually shows...
Acouple observations:

1) No one cares if you think that evolution is real or not.  Just like no one cares if you believe in gravity or not.  You personal beliefs, as applied to science, mean jack.  If you want to run around saying it's "just a theory" that's fine.  But the comments above are correct when they point out that other well known "theories" include Gravity, Relativity, and Quantum Mechanics.  If you want to line up as not believing in those "theories" as well, be my geust.  But you will look just as stupid denying those as you do denying evolution.  But on the bright side, you won't be denied all of the great medical care and other scientific advancements that are BASED on evolution even if you don't believe it's true. Just remember that if you come down with something that can be cured with the techniques derived from stem cell research in the next 50 years.  Bet you won't think it was such a terrible idea then, huh?

2) Ouachita Baptist University is not accredidated by the US Deptartment of Education. That would indicate that their programs are academically deficient in some manner. This is not about the institutions religious ideology.  Other religous universities or universities that were founded by religious orders include Harvard, Yale, Loyola, and Gonzaga. So, yes, I think it is a fair conclusion that Huck's education was sub par.  But we should also remember that our current moron in the white house has a BA from Yale and an MBA from Harvard. Education is not an indicator of intelligence.  It is an indicator of the ability to go to college.  Plenty of people matriculate and are still complete idiots.

3) Huckabee didn't pardon the rapist he lobbied for him to be paroled which isn't much better.  Can you say Willie Horton?
Just out of curiosity...what is it about Ron Paul that you think is favorable to both win over the voters and run our country for the next term?
Ken L, New Haven CT - thank you.

It doesn't mean the trogladytes won't elect him - they voted for (Supreme Courtjesters elected) a rodeo clown once already.

It just means that once again the right wing doesn't care if every school child in Borneo is smarter than our president.

"THERE IS NO PROOF FOR EVOLUTION"

There's LOTS of proof of evolution- you can see it happen around you (well, I can). What there's no proof of is that Huckebee isn't Satan. Is there? Where is it?

You're in grad school? You the cook? Bob Jones U, no doubt.
If Mike Huckabee hates everyone who isn't a white creationist then how come the African Americans like him so much?  Why would he want the kids of illegal immagrants to have a chance in society despite the bad choices of their parents? Why did that Hispanic Florida Politician endorse him today?  Why does he seem to be the only politician who accepts everyone despite what they believe.  From the way things have gone on this board it would seem that everyone here hate anyone who doesnt agree with their beliefs.
I don't need to rethink my education at all.  I know directly where I am going and am getting an education at an accredited university.Matt Tyler, Bentonville, Arkansas

I hate to break it to you, but Regent University and Orel Roberts University are both jokes.
New polls from the Tri-State area has Huckabee running poorly in New Jersey and Connecticut and bleeding some GOP support to Bloomberg. Link: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2007/12/afternoon-poll-democrats-strong-in.html
Hey, John Mac and Steve O:

1) Gravity is a theory. Check here:

and here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_gravitational_theory

2) "Theory" is the same as "fact" in scientific terms.  Check here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory

I hope you two realize how stupid you made yourselves look by denying what most Americans were taught in high school.
Huckabee's education was from non-accredited schools started by narrow minded bible beating evangelicals like himself and anyone on this board who doesn't believe in evolution, or thinks its not real because you can't see it literally happening in front of your face.
yeah I don't go to either of those schools.  Good try though.  Actually You can't see evolution happen around you.  According to evolution it is something that takes millions of years.  And I doubt anyone has been around long enought to see whether those millions of years actually happened.
scientific theories are formed as a result of RE: observation of phenomena and taking of measurements, followed by a hypothetical explanation, followed by more measurements and testing, followed by a refined theory able to make predictions, followed by more controlled testing to prove the theory correct, and so on.The process never stops and the testing can be duplicated and verified by any doubters; that often strengthens the proof. That said, gravitational theory is well proven...
Oh, look I let go of my pen and it fell. I picked it up and let go again. It fell again..over and  over and over.
However...oh, look...nonliving material + time = nonliving material. Let's wait some more time...oh, look it is still nonliving material. Well, let's try it again...oh look...it is still nonliving!!!! Where are the measurements, controlled testing, repeatability, and validity in the theory of evolution?
I think the real intollerance in this blog comes from those who seem to disagree with the faith issue. It is amazing how people like Jennifer in LA can claim such intollerance from Mr. Huckabee, yet the only lack of tolerance is from those with her view. Really, people. This country is founded on the principles of God and the right that we all have to worship as we choose. Do you not know that even the candidates on the other side of the issues have a core belief in God. There is no difference in someone's prejudice against a 'baptist' or 'christian' than that against african-americans or women or whomever. Huckabee is the choice for people who want a positive change lead by a trustworthy, proven leader who is for the advancement of ALL people.
Having listened to a couple dozen of Huckabee's speeches and interviews I can see why he is an appealing candidate.  I like the guys clarity on issues.  From immigration to border control, to the Flat/Fair Tax to an Energy Policy I agree with him.  He has other views I don't agree with but where we do agree happens to be my top priority issues.  And his views on religion to evolution to really don't matter to me.

He and Barack seem to be the 2 candidates that speak from the human heart on addressing where they think this nation needs to move and I am ready for a candidate who can move is in that direction.

I am tired of the political wonks we seem to keep electing who just don't seem to advance this nation toward energy independence and border control.  It would be nice to see a non-establisment guy get elected.

There are many causes for concerns about all of the candidates.  Huckabee seems to have a growing list.  If it is about the possible pardon/commutation of sentances of prisnors to the question about really being a fiscal conservative, these are issues that Huckabee needs to deal with.

When it comes to being a fiscal conservative, I don't know if that really works...  Is George W. Bush a fiscal conservative?  I really don't think so.  The idea of borrow and spend is completely silly.  I'd rather pay the way with taxes and fees so that I know that my children and their children don't have to worry about the debt (any kind).

Science, which has been brought up, should be left to scientists.  If you dispute their findings, do your own research and look through theirs.  I would like people who support Creationism/Intelligent Design to show any evidence and raise any predictions about what else can be found.  Science research should drive policy.  That hasn't happened in the current administration (one that has been dominated by industry; oil and otherwise).  I do wonder if that will happen in a Huckabee administration.  That is an important concern so that we don't have people who lead with their ideology first (or could influence in the wrong direction like Steven Milloy).  That would drive our country further in the wrong direction.
Wait... actually I believe Ouachita is accredited.  I don't go to Ouachita but I am still pretty sure that it is accredited
The notion that "being well-educated" necessarily means attending an institution that mocks God and disregards any theory that assumes His existence is somewhat narrow, if you ask me. Anyway, "being educated" means more than going to a particular college.  Sometimes the best education comes through experience, and Huckabee has plenty of quality experience as a leader (e.g. Governor of Arkansas for two terms). Also, his pastoral experience put him in touch with the the human predicament, counseling people through their greatest struggles.  What an excellent combination for our national leader: high-quality, proven executive experience and a heart that deeply remembers the human struggle.
But anyway.  I am done with this board.  IT is obviously going no where.  I look around and research and see no proof for evolution.  You all seem to believe what you are told and just go with it.  Mike Huckabe for President!
Ron Paul?  who is Ron Paul?  Oh is that the wacko who wants to play defense with our military? Ya ok....
This meteoric rise of Mike Huckabee does not surprise me.  Way back when there were ten of them, and Gilmore was still in the race, I told my friends he (Huckabee) was going to "catch on".  What has also not surprised me is that one hour later, the press has been all over him dragging out the dirt.

My boss's wife likes Mitt Romney. They are both Evangelicals.  At least they aren't supporting Rudy. I am not sure about Mr. Huckabee getting the nomination, but stranger things have happened in this crazy election cycle.
Also, I am in college and will go on to graduate school and I think evolution is the biggest lie ever told.
Matt Tyler, Bentonville, Arkansas (Sent Monday, December 10, 2007 2:55 PM)
------------------------------------
Matt Tyler, your only qualification to deny evolution appears to be that you are going to graduate school. Since you do not mention exactly what your field of study is, I must assume it is NOT science. A theory simply means vigorous testing and retesting of said hypothesis until it becomes accepted dogma. Have you discovered contrary evidence in your "schooling" to make your qualified statement? If so, we biologists are keen to examine your data. You may be in line for a Nobel prize and a coveted place in the history books.
Sorry, but the belief that this whole universe only took 6 days to build is crap!  Fossil evidence of humans, plants, and animals which existed millions of years ago is fact.  Letting convicted rapists free is wrong.  Putting sick people into quarantine is wrong.  Sorry, call me a bigot, but no Bible-thumping born-again, or other Christian conservative is getting my vote.
"The notion that "being well-educated" necessarily means attending an institution that mocks God and disregards any theory that assumes His existence is somewhat narrow, if you ask me."

Never been accused of being "well educated," have you?
Hey some of the smarmiest lawyers in the current administration got their degrees from some bible college...thats why all of the law breaking and torture is legal now in this country...its stuff right out of the bible
"This country is founded on the principles of God"

It was not. It was founded by some rich guys who didn't want to pay taxes.

"I look around and research and see no proof for evolution. "

Is that the blog's fault? I'll bet you didn't look very hard.

Bye.
First of all, Lisa from another planet, if you are not going to vote for anyone who claims to have a belief in the Bible and God, your choices are SO VERY LIMITED! And to Rick in WS... shame on you for equating what is going on in our country that you do not agree with to what is 'right out of the Bible'... have you ever read the Bible? Good stuff... try it out sometime! Thank God for those who stand up for their beliefs rather than bash someone else's!
I am sick of being governed by religious fanatics.  Huckabee will never get my vote.
Huckabee doesn't believe in evolution!?!  That's amazing.  He's obviously not qualified to be president.
I am from Iowa and am a republican and there is no way I would ever vote for tax hike Mike.
Huckabee is a freak!
People on this post who don't believe in evolution are real idiots!
Religion is not a litmus test for being president.
Im a dirt eating bible beating republican from Dixie and I am voting for Mike because he freed that rapist to do it again.
WHO EVER SAID HUCKABEE DOESN'T BELIEVE IN EVOLUTION?
OMG... People, we are getting so off the facts.
In reference to Ms. Brock from OH and the even more troubling comment from Wayne from Oregon:

Darwin stated that evolution was only a theory about a hundred years ago, I think we can all agree that biology has progressed much since then.  Evolutionary theory is driving force for all that we know about biology.  Genetics has come as close to proving evolution as we will probably be able to come in science, and most of our advances in medicine have been based on evolution as well- we must take into account that viruses actually evolve right in front of our eyes when distributing medicine.  There is pretty much a consensus by scientists worldwide that evolution did in fact occur (and not from rocks, who was your science teacher wayne??).  While you both are probably not idiots, and Huckabee isn't either, you do seem ignorant to the process of scientific research and more importantly the difference between a scientific theory and a 'theory' in everyday language.  To call something a scientific theory means much more than to say "it's just a theory."

I'm not actually anti-Huckabee because he chooses faith over evidence and as he has said himself: He is running for president not looking to rewrite the eighth grade biology curriculum.  I just felt the need to input that the evidence for evolution goes much further than Darwin thinking different species of finches looked similar.

Hope this helps.
[Nathan Hamann: The notion that "being well-educated" necessarily means attending an institution that mocks God and disregards any theory that assumes His existence is somewhat narrow, if you ask me.]

There is no theory that God exists (merely beliefs and non-verifiable, non-repeatable anecdotal events), likewise there is no theory that God does not exist (only those who question and those without faith).  Please, at the very least, get your terminology correct--theory is a scientific term.  It does matter.
I'm from N. Little Rock, Arkansas, and know Huckabee very well.

Things I like about him:

He's honest, hard-working, loves God and others, very intelligent, great orator, calm and collected, has experience

Things I don't like:

He's soft on crime and soft on illegals.  I can understand his idea of JR not paying for Daddy's crimes, but I still think if Daddy's here illegally, he's gotta go.

I think our borders need to be locked down and tightened up.  I think Huckabee stands out in a field of idiots, but I still wish someone better would come along.

I think whoever our President is, Obama, Sillary, Huck, whoever, better keep on the offensive with Terrorism.  Surely we can all agree on keeping our country safe?  Maybe not.  I'm not counting on any of you guys being bright.  Try to remember 9/11, '93 TC bombings, USS Cole and even further on back to Pearl Harbor.  Being asleep and hoping for the best won't get us anywhere and will only get more civilians killed.  We have soldiers who have risked and gave all, and who are GLAD to do it.  They are the ones who we should be making use of, and appreciating.  They want to win this war.  We should let them by supporting them and their mission.

Oh, and on the fossil record being proof for evolution:  That's retarded.  Science can't even tell me how old Pat's fart streaked underwear is, much less how old ANY fossil is.  The Fossil record can only show us that IT was there and IT was in a certain region and at a certain place above or below sea level.

To believe that evolution (billions of years of time and pure chance) produced everything we see and know, living cells from an explosion of gases, would take more faith than that of the average 'Creation' believer.   A person who can look at Creation and not think it had to be set in motion by a 'Creator' is ignoring more facts than anyone with opposing views.

But back to Huckabee.  He would make a great President and I hope people will give him a chance.   Don't let anyone make up your decision and please don't let a party do it.   Decide what you think should be done, and find someone who believes as close to that as you can.
-----CLINTON SLEEZE FATIGUE WILL INVIGORATE GOP, DISPIRIT DEMOCRATS AND SINK DEMOCRATIC TICKET-----

-----EDWARDS/RICHARDSON TO WIN-----

It is possible that Senator Clinton is the best candidate.  However, even though many may like the policies that Senator Clinton proposes, they should also consider her record, just as Senator Clinton insists.
.
The last Clinton Administration, when faced with the fact that protection rackets where assaulting, torturing and murdering people with poison and radiation, chose to avoid its responsibilities to incarcerate the criminals and to protect the citizenry.
.
Instead, they made a deal with the criminal gang stalker protection rackets to leave them alone and to consequently abandon the citizenry.
.
Do we want a President who sells out the citizenry for votes?
.
Do we want a President who sends a "crime does pay" message to society?
.
Would you vote for a President who signed nonaggression deals with the KKKlan or the Nazi party? Gangs that torture with poison and radiation are much like the KKKlan and Nazi Party.
.
We do not need a sellout President. We need a principled leader President.
.
If you are one of the few who do not know what the above refers to, do a web search for “gang stalking” to see the tip of the dirtberg.  Please do it before you decide to reply to my post. Here let me make it easy for you: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22gang+stalking%22.

OK, this might be too technical for some people, but those of you that have experience in medicine and virus vaccines know that evolution does in fact take place. You may have even observed it. (The rest of you need to ask your healthcare provider why you need to get influenza vaccines every year.) You may have also studied how certain bacteria are now becoming resistant to antibiotics. These things show at the most basic level, that things in nature go through changes to adapt to their surroundings. Unfortunately, the anti-evolution folks give demands such as "show me proof of a monkey turning into a human". This cannot be shown because this does not occur. An X in nature does not spontaneously turn into a Y, but over time, a set that may originally contain [X,Y,Z] may change to contain [X,Y,W].

I would suggest that people not turn this into a political issue. As all science, this is a very nuanced and complicated topic, and I'm certainly not doing it justice with my overly simplified description of it.
The Treaty with Tripoli, approved unanimously by the Senate in 1797, under the administration of John Adams. Article 11 of the treaty states, "[T]he government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion…."

When the Founders wrote the nation's Constitution, they specified that "no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States." (Article 6, section 3)   The words "Jesus Christ, Christianity, Bible, and God" are never mentioned in the Constitution-- not once.

None of the Founding Fathers were atheists. Most of the Founders were Deists, which is to say they thought the universe had a creator, but that he does not concern himself with the daily lives of humans, and does not directly communicate with humans, either by revelation or by sacred books. They spoke often of God, (Nature's God or the God of Nature), but this was not the God of the bible. They did not deny that there was a person called Jesus, and praised him for his benevolent teachings, but they flatly denied his divinity. Some people speculate that if Charles Darwin had lived a century earlier, the Founding Fathers would have had a basis for accepting naturalistic origins of life, and they would have been atheists.  Most of them were stoutly opposed to the bible, and the teachings of Christianity in particular.

This is why Huckabee will never, EVER be President.
Nuff said.
This country is founded on the principles of God and the right that we all have to worship as we choose. Do you not know that even the candidates on the other side of the issues have a core belief in God.
Kathryn in Bham
*****************************************************

Wrong! This country was founded on the principles of the Rule of Law. It was founded to escape a state religion. A state religion is exactly the direction that the "moral majority" wanted to impose since it's inception in the late 70's and early 80's.

I have no problem with people and thier religious beliefs, as long as they don't try to impose those beliefs on myself or anyone else that don't subscribe to them. Which, in fact is the complete opposite of what has been happening for the past two decades. The fact that Huckabee had to put "christian leader" in bold print in his adverts doesn't do much to sooth the libertarian in me.

I know that the other candidates have a core belief in a god. That's great, keep that god to yourself, I don't want to hear about it, I am not going to convert.

If Democrats would stay out of our pockets, and republicans would stay out of our bedroom, America would be perfect.
I can say this with some measure authority and confidence: People who launch unsolicited verbal attacks upon another person because of their differences (education, beliefs, race, etc) are probably the victim of having been bullied by other people, to include relatives, strangers, or friends. Think about it deeply now! ...Does Gov. Huckabee remind you of the person that bullied you many years ago?  If so, get over it and enjoy life!

People with your views are scary. First, science can indeed tell how old the streaks in my underwear are through carbon dating.  Second, evolution doesn't take billions of years, it can take much less than that.  And believing in the reality of evolution as opposed to creationisms in its purest form, does not mean I am denying the existence of a creator, but that we were created by our creator through a process called evolution.
