Huck FL nod; more on homosexuality

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio added his name to endorsers jumping to support the Huckabee campaign. Rubio is the state's first Cuban-American House Speaker and could carry weight in Florida's upcoming Jan. 29 primary. Although Huckabee previously opposed the Cuban embargo, he has since changed his opinion.

During last night's Univision debate, the Thompson campaign sent out an email, citing Huckabee's position from 2002 when he called for the end to the embargo. This morning, Huckabee said his opposition stemmed from trying to protect Arkansas' rice industry and economy while he was the state's governor.

"The reality is when you understand better why that is an important tool in keeping the propaganda machine from being so well-funded and putting more pressure on the tyranny, dictatorship of the Castros -- one thing you will never find is any softness on my part toward Castro," Huckabee said at South Miami's La Carreta restaurant. "I'm always subject to learning, to growing and never being so stubborn and maybe bull-headed that when we're confronted with important facts about this policy that we wouldn't come to the place where we make the right decisions, not just for Cuban Americans but for this country and its relationship to Cuba overall."

The endorsement highlights the importance of the Hispanic vote. All of the Republican candidates, with the exception of Ron Paul, hoped to get Speaker Rubio's endorsement.

"This may not do a lot for Marco's career, but it's sure going to do a lot for mine,” Huckabee said. "I know there are going to be a lot of people saying everyone running for president wanted the endorsement of the speaker. And they did. Everyone sought, everyone asked for, no one would have turned it down."

After the endorsement, reporters barraged Huckabee with questions regarding his opinion on homosexuality. "Let's understand what sin means -- sin means missing the mark," he responded. "Missing the mark can mean missing the mark in any area. We've all missed the mark. ... How we miss the mark is less important than we all miss the mark. The mark is that we have marriage -- men and women, they marry, they create children, and they train their replacements and you have a future generation then that creates their replacements and trains them. That's the mark. If we didn't have that as the ideal, we wouldn't have a civilization that was able to perpetuate."

When asked if he would not allow a homosexual person to hold a position in a Huckabee administration, the former governor clearly stated that would not be the case. Huckabee said he had hired gay people to work for him in the past.

"If I did that, I couldn't have anybody in my administration," Huckabee said of hiring those who have sinned. "In fact, I think I couldn't be in it because I missed the mark too ... All of us have missed the mark; every one of us. How we missed it is different. But as it relates to our culture and civilization, again I make no apology that marriage is the proper relationship in which we create families."

Go Huck!  Seattle loves you!

Huckabee called for the end of the Cuban embargo less than 5 years ago...something the Cuban community in FL have been opposed to.

Now Huckabee has FLIPPED FLOPPED and says he's for the embargo when talking with Cuban Americans.

AND THEY BELIEVE HIM AND SUPPORT HIM

Talk about cutting off their noses to spite their faces!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BUT wait...who is the media coating with teflon.

Oh, Now I get it.
he protests too much---he is probably another Ted Haggart or Larry Craig
come on, Jesus was gay.... he lived at home til he was 33, he hung out with 12 other guys, and he wasn't interested in women...
What's with all this MISSING THE MARK and sin babble, Huckabee?

Great ball's of fire...old obama is going to have his hands full if he tries to run against Mr. "likeable" slippery Huckabee.

I can hardly wait to see that contest and the debates.
Huckabee can out "likeable" Obama any day and Obama is going DOWN-DOWN-DOWN in those debates.  Huckabee is humorous unlike like stammering Obama in debates.
Huckabee hits "his mark" quickly a gets his point made without sounding holier than thou even tho he is.

Oh my gosh....that's hilarious.  Which one it the most pious holier than thou...Huckabee or Obama.

Stock up on the popcorn before there is a run on it.

The Huckabee Obama show is going to be the best thing since the invention of the microwave!!!!!!!!!!
could somebody please send this ignorant hick back to arkansas and be done with it already?
You just can't make this stuff up!

Being a Florida Republican I can attest to the fact that Mr. Rubio has nowhere to go but home after his term ends. This is a move to secure (a bit premature) a political appointment.

I wonder...does Rubio think the world is 6000 years old?
What an idiot. This cute Evangelical zeal may play well in Iowa and SC, it may even get him the nomination when combined with his momentum-inducing free ride from the press, but he'll be clobbered in the generals. Backing Huckabee could mean one of two things - Huckabee wins (less likely), Giuliani wins (more likely). If Huckabee wins, the Democrats win in the general. If Rudy wins then voters will have a choice between two Democrats, Rudy or the other guy (gal). Either way, look for a Democrat in the White House. Well done Republicans, you may have already lost.
I know there will be people who will want to eat Huckabee alive for his statements on homosexuality.  In the midst of that, I hope people remember that it takes a lot of political courage and character to stick to one's opinions in the face of an onslaught.  He seems to be fair and even-handed in applying his definition of "sin", even if it's unpopular.
So, as long as some gay people are useful to Huckabee, they're OK to have around as long as he can condescend to appear to tolerate them, yet still work against gay interests and equality...as a "Christian Leader?"

I think he's in the right party all right...the former party of Lincoln, which become Strom Thurmond's new States' rights party, which obviously has stayed that way after old Strom's death.

The states' rightists of yesterday use to claim that blackness was caused by sin...the sin of ancient Ham, alleged to be the ancestor Africans. They don't say that out loud anymore in polite company (still teach it in Sunday School though). They're still using a highly dubious "sin excuse" to exploit others.

Love the sinner, hate the sin. It's really all about the hate.
Well, at least he admits that he is missing the mark--now if he will just admit that this is another example of his missing the mark.  We didn't invent homosexuality in the 20th century any more than we invented differences of opinion.  Why does he care what people do behind closed doors when there is so much to talk about that really matters: war, rape, spouse abuse, health care, taxes, out-of-control government spending, gas prices, falling dollar. . . . .

Wow!  Just a few weeks ago, Huckabee was in the single digits.  Now he gets the endorsement from Florida's speaker of the house!  I went to Huckabee's website (www.mikehuckabee.com) and learned more.  He's the real deal.  The only thing he seems to lack is money, and the political machine it can buy.  I donated.  I hope others will too, so that he will have a chance to go forward.
Wow. Gov. Huckabee's answer to that question on homosexuality is probably the best I've ever heard, and I'm not being sarcastic.

As a Christian, I think subconsciously I've always wanted to know what was the best way to answer an awkward question like that.

Huck: master of plain language
I think Mr. Huckabee hits the mar with his thoughts on homosexuality
Separation of Church and State- PLEASE!
Huck I believe you have missed the mark on Cuba also or don't you consider pandering for votes a sin? Maybe you can tell me why Cuban Communism is so bad and Chinese Communism is not. Cuba cannot hurt us while the Chinese have a 2.5 million man army and the missile capability of shooting down one of their own satellites as a way of letting us know they could just as easily shoot down ours.
You know, in all honesty, as a gay man, I don't have any problem with that position. I mean, I hardly consider that aspect of myself sinful, and I can agree to disagree with him on that, but for somebody who looks at the world through a Christian mindset, that's a remarkably compassionate position to take. At least he's not breathing fire and brimstone down my neck.

And to be honest, yes, it does make more sense to me that children be raised in a two parent, male-female family. Do I think that has to be the only option for a functioning civilization, as Huckabee claims? No. But nonetheless this remains a Christian conservative position on homosexuality that I can accept and take seriously. Touche, Mr. Huckabee. I never saw that coming.
OHHH , That meany Castro, if they had oil he would be gone by now.
They have a lot of old classic cars there, maybe the car crowd could get the busihes to invade.
Hmmm...I guess homosexuality is an issue for presidential candidates but questioning the age of the earth (Huckabee says it's 6000 years old) is
"out of bounds"??

This mans extreme religious beliefs MUST be exposed.
During last night's Univision debate, the Thompson campaign sent out an email, citing Huckabee's position from 2002 when he called for the end to the embargo. This morning, Huckabee said his opposition stemmed from trying to protect Arkansas' rice industry and economy while he was the state's governor.

I can understand his position, the port here moved a lot of rice to Cuba.  he just needs to be careful talking about anything that has to do with Castro, a lot of people in Miami have some pretty bitter feelings about him.

I don't see any problems with hiring someone who is homosexual, as long as they keep it in the closet during work hours.

Again with the religious mumbo jumbo.  How about this, Huck, Gay people are human beings, and perhaps, JUST PERHAPS, God made them this way to test how the rest of us would treat them.  Man, you holier than thou repubs would fail that test, wouldn't you!   I for one, am SO SICK of gay bashing.  ENOUGH and let's talk about healthcare, education, Social Security, Iraq, the economy, trade, deficits, government spending, etc etc etc.  Enough with the gay bashing and "who is the most holy" crap.  America sees through it!
Huckabee's response to the gay question - love the sinner, hate the sin - is pathetic.  It's a pretext for an administration that will be the biggest anti-gay discriminator in history!  And meanwhile, we are fighting a war in the middle east, requiring Arab linguists, yet, the fed govt still kicks them out because they find out they are gay, or suspected of being gay.  Huck would continue this, and that's bad for america.  And just because there's the ideal of hetero marriage producing children, doesn't necessarily translate to barring non-traditional civil marriages.  Based on his premise, barron hetero couples should be required to divorce, and all hetero marriages should be annulled if they do not produce issue within the first 3 years.
The Dems will win the white house in 2008 for sure if Huckabee is the Republican nominee, according to recent polls.  So please, Repukes, nominate him.
"The death of Castro is coming soon, gotta use him one last time before we lose him"-signed THE REPUBLICAN MUSE OF POLITCS.
In the sixties he would have been a good boogy man during halloween, now he is a cadaver of history, waiting to dissolve into myth.
Will Cuba get the 'HISPANIC' vote for the GOP, sounds like more neo-con dreamscapes to me.
We live in such a DUMB country... Former actors, former oilmen, and former PREACHERS have no business occupying the White House - none!  Huckabee and all of his brethren are ignorant.  Has anyone even considered that perhaps the occurence of homosexuality in the (God-given)natural world is God's way of curbing the tendency of lunatics amongst us to reproduce?  That's it's God's form of birth control? Whatever; I just doubt it's part of God's perfect plan to eliminate or discriminate against gay people, much less to judge them as sinners!
"Although Huckabee previously opposed the Cuban embargo, he has since changed his opinion."

Has there been a group the Huskster hasn't pandered to yet?
Gene and English Teacher, I agree.  I liked Huckabee for awhile, but now he comes off as fake, fake, fake.  And while I think Harold has an interesting perspective as a gay man, I have to wonder what you think about Huckabee wanted to quarantine gays and people with HIV/AIDS a few years ago?  I respect you for agreeing to disagree.  I don't personally agree with your lifestyle, but you seem like a very mature individual, and I think it would be a priviledge to meet you.  I think Huckabee's stance (about the quarantine) was WRONG, and that his excuse for the comment was lame.  I also think his justification for flip flopping on Cuba is also shallow.

the more I hear from this man, the less I like him.  I sincerely hope there is enough time before the voting starts for his temporary surge to fizzle out.  He isn't cut out to be a president!
KENNY JIMNO IN LAKELAND FLORIDA.

WAIT I KNOW IVE MISSED THE MARK ON MANY THINGS GOVERNOR.
BEING GAY, ACTING OUT MY DESIRES IS NOT ONE OF THEM.

BY THE AWSOME POWER OF GOD. I SURE AS HECK, HUCK, FEAR HIM. GOD HAS ALLOWED GAY PEOPLE TO TAKE CARE OF SOCIETY. GOD MADE ME OUT OF GAY CLAY FOR A REASON AND WITHOUT QUESTIONING FAITH I BELIVE GAY PEOPLE DO BELONG AND SHOULD MARRY UNDER THE EYES OF GOOD TO PLEASE GOD.

MR GOVERNOR HUCKABEE ARE YOU MISSING THE MARK? SIN IS SIN  TO DOWN PLAY GODS WORDS IS SAYING TO ME YOUR EYES ARE SHUT. AS GOVERNOR YOU TOOK IN MANY GIFTS. TAKE THE GIFT GOD GAVE YOU. PREACH COMPASSION AND LOVE
Something sounds neurotic when a politician answers questions with mumbo jumbo about who`s the biggest `sinner.`   These are usually the guys whose own personal lives are out of order and it reflects in a lack of leadership abilities.
I want a leader who will answer questions on issues like homosexuality by saying that equal rights belong to all Americans and that he`s not going to waste his time analyzing other adults` love lives.  Then I could feel more confident that he can focus on issues that matter, and recognize that whether someone finds men or women attractive should be absolutely none of his business.

As a onetime solid republican now an independent, I’ve watched the race for the republican nomination.  In particular, there has been Fred Thompson, whose comments at a SC gun show about he felt “like he was in paradise” make me ask if he would say the same thing standing in front of the graves of our 32  Tech students who died due to easy access to guns.  Then we have Gov. Mike Huckabee.  He reminds me of how Baby Bush was going to be the "compassionate conservative", and would be "a uniter, not a divider". Yet his administration is directly responsible for letting Osama escape his due while Bush pursued his pipe dream in Iraq, killing 4000 of our soldiers in the process, and wasting so far half a trillion dollars.  That money could have paid for a $10,000 college scholarship for about 40 million college students, and left an extra hundred billion dollars to secure our borders, a job still undone.

Huckabee is also just like Bush, in that he caters to the extreme religious conservatives, who in his church declare women must be subservient to the men, as if they take lessons from e.g. Saudi Arabia.  And make no mistake about it, his (and their opinion) about gay people is best described as "hate the sin, love the sinner", while his real goal driving that to translate into "hate the sinner", something we don't need here in a world so full of religious hate. An example is the  mad baptist preacher  Fred Phelps, who celebrates at our soldiers funerals because "America tolerates homosexuals".  These right wing fringe leaders remind me of how Hitler built his power on religious hatred of the Jews. and 50 million died.

And then you have flip-flopper Mike Romney, who once supported gay peoples aspirations for equality, but now follows the mormon church, which excommunicates gays not only from the church, but throws them out of their families, making them untouchables.  And we have also seen McCain who would kow-tow to the same right wing fringe that controls the republican party,  forgetting that while he and some others of our brave service people spent  terrifying years in a prison camp, every day in this country millions of gay people must imprison their feelings and orientation, for with a one word slip, they expose themselves to ridicule, hatred, and even violence.  Among our gay friends, 3 of 4 were suicidal between age 17 and 21.  One was only a trigger squeeze away from blowing apart his head, so that he wouldn't have to face telling his father he was gay, the father would find out in the blood soaked letter he had written.  And for those who talk about "family values", a gay man told me that when he told his parents he was gay at about age 21, one said they "wanted to kill him, but hoped he would do it to himself".  Is that the true meaning of the “family values” cliché we hear so often? And this is all "in the Name of God", by people brainwashed into hatred, hardly any different then those whose religious training created the murderers of 9/11.

The bottom line is that until the Republican party loses big time  and kicks out their religious extremists, America can’t afford them, lest  America become a mixture of the religious hatred, Christianity's version, just like that found in parts of Islam, and the military madness of Hitlers Germany.  Our leadership of the world, seriously damaged by Bush, will be completely destroyed, and  the whole world could plunge into religious based chaos.
