Iraq/Iran: A post-war election?

Posted: Tuesday, December 11, 2007 9:10 AM by Domenico Montanaro

The New York Times’ David Brooks looks at the improved opinion of how things are going in Iraq and Iran (with the new NIE) and speculates the 2008 election could be shaping up to be a postwar election. "The world still has its problems, but it no longer seems to be building toward some larger crisis. The atmosphere of fear and conflict has at least temporarily abated. With the change in conditions, the election of 2008 is beginning to feel like a postwar election. American voters are coming out of the shells constructed after Sept. 11th and are looking for a new normalcy. They’re looking for something entirely different."

Until the next terror attack and people start looking for the same answers again....
If it's something "entirely different" they have in mind, they will wind up gravitating towards Ron Paul rather than any of the eight neo-cons or the typically bland field of Democrats.
I wonder just what it is that would give one such optimism about "the war"? Is it the misinformed notion that Islam means us no harm? One need only check out their equivalent of what we call mission or vision statement to cure that idea. Or is it the idealistic hope that they will leave us alone if we get out of the Mid-East? Or that terrorism can be dealt with passively, or through diplomacy? Can we believe anything that they say?
We will start returning to normalcy when bush/cheney are GONE.  If there is one thing cheney taught everyone it is don't be a dick.
How can we possibly be post war if there are still well over 100,000 troops on the ground in Iraq that even with the Democrats, it's anybody's guess when we will leave?  How can we be post war if this administration is trying to keep the drumbeats for war with Iran?

Okay, I'll move non-partisan here for a second.  Will a post-war election favor Democrats or Republicans?  I'd suppose Republicans, because ...that would mean we won?
Thats good. A little peace and quiet will help us get our permanent bases built. You think these people could get their shit together after we go to the trouble of traveling 10,000 miles to give them a hand. Do they have any idea what these munitions cost us?
Ungrateful indigenous jerks.

Not like Brooks has ever been confused with Nostradamus!
wether or not we have a posr war election, we will need a president that can negotiate through diplomacy as the president of the u.s.

the rest of the world will have to see the next president has morally and ethically high values. he or she will have to be a person that is able to bridge the voids the bush administration has created internationally.

the next president will have to be a healer home and abroad. the next president will have to transcend the bipartisan politics of today. the republicans and independents in congress will have to feel the next president is about building a bridge and not be a representative of past battles and being their as an advocate of being able to do battle with them.

it is going to take extremely good judgement and visionary purpose to heal the damage that has been done over the last 7 years. this next president can't give into the desire to go to the hill and fight the republicans because he or she is tough enough and that is what they have experienced in their time within washington.

he or she can't just hope for hope for change. he or she is going to have to exact change on capitol hill in order for us to make changes that benefit america abroad.

judgement is going to be a huge factor with the next president. bringing support from both sides and the middle of the aisle will be important. we can't afford someone to go to the capitol looking to just a fight ot he ability to fight.

it is time for change in politics from the way it has been done for so long, or it won't matter if it is a present or post war election or presidency.
With the saber rattling, fear mongering, and pointless war coming to an end, the Dems will have their best chance next year.
The republicans need more war and fear to have a chance at election. Look for more threats and macho mannequin stuff from the rightwingnuts
WE SEE THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL.How are thiings going with that Gen.Westmoreland.You will believe what you are told now believe.STUPID IS AS STUPID IS TOLD TO BE.Hows that reporter from nbc I always see him out and about in Iraq doing stories from everywhere like before the war when non muslims and for that matter non shia could travel without fear of beheading, send them out and lets see how good things are,A story without an army escort maybe?
OK, so violence is down to the level of Somalia or Sudan.  Is it time to declare victory and get out?
We will only return to normalcy when bush/cheney are gone and we have a real American president/vice-president.
American voters are coming out of the shells constructed after Sept. 11th and are looking for a new normalcy. They’re looking for something entirely different."

Until the next terrorist attack...
I thought democrats declared victory (for them) months ago?
John Doe, Seattle, Wash:

no, no - that was prezidunt Monkey Paw and MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. You right wingers never seem to know what's going on.

"Until the next terrorist attack... " That you'll pray for, being a good Christian and Republican who hates America.
I don't possibly see how this is post war.  How many troops do we still have in Iraq and we still have a President literally gunning for Iran?

It just goes to show, how we at home are really unaffected by this war.  If it truly were a worthwhile cause, wouldn't we all feel it?

So does this post-war election benefit the Democrats or the Republicans?  I suppose the Republicans, because post-war ...would mean victory?
And what about Afghanistan and the hunt for Bin Laden?  If the troops leave Iraq, will they also leave Afghanistan or will the forces fighting their be increased?  Do any of the candidates have a clear policy on Afghanistan?
Democrats, didn't declare victory, just ask Harry or Nancy they will tell you we lost 18 months ago.

We are winning!
have any of you in here ben in a war, served the military or been a part of any type of military support?
That David, still a wild and crazy guy.  Somebody wake me up when he is ever right on a prediction.
ace p washington, d.c.--What is your point? America right or wrong?
Anyone who has never been in the military has no right to an opinion?
The military does what it is told. They didn't set around the barracks one day and decide to "go do" Iraq. The "President" we elected and a spineless congress sent them. If it is wrong then it is up to citizens to say so and say so loudly.
