Oh-eight (R): Uninspired Republicans?

Posted: Tuesday, December 11, 2007 9:17 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: ,

The New York Times on the latest NYT/CBS poll: “Republican voters across the country appear uninspired by their field of presidential candidates, with a vast majority saying they have not made a final decision about whom to support… Not one of the Republican candidates is viewed favorably by even half the Republican electorate, the poll found… By contrast, Democrats are happier with their field and more settled in their decisions.”

With waterboarding back in the news, McClatchy’s Lightman writes that the only clear opponents of the practice “are former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who recently said that waterboarding is torture and that torture should ‘not be the policy of the United States of America,’ Texas Rep. Ron Paul and Arizona Sen. John McCain.”

GIULIANI: The candidate sat down for an interview with San Francisco Chronicle editors/reporters. Some highlights:
-- On whether his past business and personal relationships have created doubts about his viability as a GOP candidate: "Anybody's career (that has) been as varied and as long and as intense as mine, there are going to be several mistakes that have been made ... but you've got to balance that against the results that I've got."
-- On concerns that his marriages, public divorce and infidelities present a question of values and loyalty to some GOP voters: "The question was, was I loyal to the people of New York City? Judging what's going on in people's personal life is usually very hard to do accurately from the outside. Because nobody knows all the different things that happened inside somebody's personal life. When you have public performance, you can judge it on that."
-- On whether he had any regrets about his conduct in those matters: "Of course, I have regrets. I have regrets about a lot of things…  A lot of things I did wrong and (there were) a lot of mistakes that I made ... but I've tried to learn from them, and improve ... constantly. I've had my own things that I've had to deal with, grow from and express apologies for… We're human beings, and we make mistakes."

The Chicago Tribune fact-checks Giuliani's ad called "One Hour," which claims that in the one hour that Ronald Reagan was sworn into office, the hostages were released. The ad goes, "That should tell us a lot about these Islamic terrorists we're facing…The best way you deal with dictators, the best way you deal with tyrants and terrorists is you stand up to them, you don't back down."

“But that's pretty much the opposite of what America did. The United States freed the hostages by begrudgingly signing the Algiers Accords, which required the United States to pledge ‘that it is, and from now on, will be the policy of the United States not to intervene, directly or indirectly, politically or militarily, in Iran's internal affairs.’”

In San Fran yesterday, Giuliani lectured the city on its homeless problem.

And did Giuliani go further than he’s ever gone before in criticizing gay Americans? The New York Times notes his statement from Sunday on Meet the Press: “‘My moral views on this come from the, you know, from the Catholic Church, and I believe that homosexuality, heterosexuality, as a way that somebody leads their life is not, isn’t sinful,’ said Mr. Giuliani, who as New York mayor temporarily moved in with two gay roommates after he separated from his wife. ‘It’s the acts — it’s the various acts that people perform that are sinful, not the orientation that they have.’”

“Wayne Besen, the executive director of Truth Wins Out, a gay rights group, said that he hoped the campaign would clarify the statement, which he said ‘seemed to parrot the religious right’s cruel and empty “love the sinner, hate the sin” rhetoric.’”

HUCKABEE: The Politico examines some of the help Huckabee may be receiving from outside groups. "Huckabee’s Iowa surge is driven largely by an eleventh-hour rally of Christian activists behind the Republican’s candidacy, and that’s certain to draw attention from tax sleuths and others. ‘We will be watching it very closely,’ says Rob Boston of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, which is also monitoring Democrat Barack Obama’s latest round of church visits in the African-American community.”

The Los Angeles Times’ headline: "Huckabee does a flip-flop on Cuba." From the article: "As governor of Arkansas five years ago, Mike Huckabee joined a bipartisan chorus of politicians who concluded that the U.S. trade embargo against Cuba was bad for businesses. Now that he's a top-tier candidate for president, Huckabee has decided he favors the embargo -- so much so that he vowed Monday to outdo even President Bush in strangling the regime of Cuban President Fidel Castro and punishing those who do business there."

Says Huckabee: "Rather than seeing it as some huge change, I would call it, rather, the simple reality that I'm running for president of the United States, not for reelection as governor of Arkansas," he said. "I've got to look at this as an issue that touches the whole country."

The New York Sun combs through the ethics violations filed against Huckabee over the years in Arkansas. "While governor, Mr. Huckabee was also the subject of 16 ethics complaints that forced him to pay $1,000 in fines for failing to report outside income and payments from his campaign fund, and he was investigated for flying Arkansas state airplanes when on personal and political business."

The AP delves more deeply into the pardons and commutations that occurred on Huck's watch in Arkansas. "Huckabee says there's nothing in his record to indicate he's soft on crime. While the number of pardons exceeded those of his predecessors, so did the size of the state prison system and so did the number of people executed."

The Hill takes a look at Huckabee's New Hampshire operation and finds: "Huckabee has only a skeletal staff in New Hampshire and scant funds for television ads as Iowa drains the bulk of his resources."

MCCAIN: The Arizona senator focused on reducing dependence on foreign oil through hydrogen and nuclear power while campaigning in South Carolina yesterday. He said he would not advocate drilling in ANWR, however.

PAUL: Paul has rejected the draft invitation of the Libertarian Party to run as its nominee.

ROMNEY: Here’s his campaign’s new TV in Iowa: “Two former governors, two good family men,” an announcer states. “Both pro-life, both support a constitutional amendment protecting traditional marriage. The difference? Mitt Romney stood up, and vetoed in-state tuition for illegal aliens … opposed driver's licenses for illegals. Mike Huckabee? Supported in-state tuition benefits for illegal immigrants. Huckabee even supported taxpayer-funded scholarships for illegal aliens. On immigration, the choice matters.”

Romney’s new ad hitting Huckabee is being released “as recent polls have shown Mr. Huckabee now leading among early caucusgoers in Iowa, displacing Mr. Romney, who has seen a drift of Christian conservatives and others toward Mr. Huckabee, a former Baptist minister. The immigration issue is a potent one in Iowa, which has had a steady influx of illegal immigrants in recent years.”

The Boston Globe adds, "The ad does not mention that Romney is a relatively recent convert to the antiabortion cause and had struck a more moderate stance on gay rights during his run for governor in 2002. Yesterday, Huckabee started his own TV ad on illegal immigration that, along with a plan he unveiled on Friday, seeks to toughen his stand. The ad - airing in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina - emphasizes building a fence on the Mexico border and shows him saying no to amnesty and to ‘sanctuary cities.’”

THOMPSON: Thompson has written off New Hampshire, it seems. The Union Leader’s lead: “Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson has no plans to return to first-primary state New Hampshire to campaign before the end of the year, a spokesman said yesterday.”

Just more proof that the Democrats have much lower standards then the Republicans.
Again, I invite anyone who still thinks "simulated drowning" is not torture to have it done to themselves and report back to us on whether it is tortur eor not...better yet

There are some admin officials that could stand some "enhanced interrogation techniques" being performed on them to get at the real truth on the Iraq war lies, torture, civil rights abuses, etc...after all if it is legal in gitmo surely its legal in DC...right?
PAUL: Paul has rejected the draft invitation of the Libertarian Party to run as its nominee.

What say you Ron paul fans?

Its easy to understand why repubs are not happy with their candidates, they are all losers.
You're 'uninspired' if you haven't made a decision on what candidate you are voting for? By that same measure, the Democrats are in coma. What conclusions have the Democrats come to at this point? Polls show them to be more wishy-washy then the Republicans.
Okay, so Mitt may be panicking a little much, but he has no reason to believe the media will scrutinize Huckabee fairly - at least the Iowa press anyway. For months the Huckster has been getting a free ride, making Evangelicals believe the totally false idea that Huckabee may be a viable general election candidate. The fair tax crap should be enough on its own to scuttle that idea, but he also has these innumerable pardons based on the word of a pastor, lax immigration record, not only no foreign policy experience but no clue on foreign policy, and no established network to support his candidacy (machine). Do you really believe his line that he's beaten the Clinton machine? He BECAME a Clinton. Hillary would chew this guy up and spit him out.
Please continue to ignore Ron Paul. You only encourage people to look into him more.
"The Chicago Tribune fact-checks Giuliani's ad called "One Hour," which claims that in the one hour that Ronald Reagan was sworn into office, the hostages were released."
**Don't try to confuse Republicans with the facts!!!  They listen to truth, which rarely--if ever--relies on facts!

This is too good not to pull out of context.  Christian conservatives, think what you must.  [Mr. Giuliani, who as New York mayor temporarily moved in with two gay roommates after he separated from his wife.]

"Huckabee has decided he favors the embargo -- so much so that he vowed Monday to outdo even President Bush in strangling the regime of Cuban President Fidel Castro and punishing those who do business there"
--Does anybody know anything about Cuban foreign policy?  I know little, just that what we are doing ain't workin'.  The US embargo to Cuba is pretty tight, I believe, but don't a number of European countries economically support the island.  I hear it's a pretty decent and popular tourism destination.  So, will Huckabee's plan work?
Maybe we could give them Hillary Clinton !
Why not have hre run as a Republican ?
Two problems solved with one move
She's sleazy enough for the Republicans
She could bring Norman Hsu and Peter Paul with her
(to say nothing of Mark Penn, the Karl Rove wannabe)
Republican-lite meets Republicans

Nostalgic for the '90's ?
Dying for a dysfunctional White House ?
Hillary clinton for business as usual
A soap opera waiting to happen......
I believe the republicans are upset with their canidates because the republican party has been tarnished. With scandal after scandal coming from the White House, I beleive Americans in general will be voting democratic. The fact that the 109th congress did nothing to keep this adminstration in line, is why we are in such a mess today.
Republicans, or at least the ones I know, are at least uninspired, and closer to unimpressed, by the field of candidates that 'Represent' them. Huck is the darling of the 'Born Again' Republicans, who are viewed by the Majority, as being a radical element. Mitt is in the 'Flaky' category that Bush I epitomized. Rudy has already lost once to Hillary, and that sits on them like a load of wet hay. Fred is just boring Fred. The rest have little or no 'Name' recognition, nor charisma, that someone like Obama brings. Add to it, the total incompetence of Dubya that has turned off an ever growing 'Independent' movement, and continues to disparage the Republican Party as they see it, and they are left with...the 2012 Election? For them, the 2008 Election seems to be the 2008 Dyselection. Just an Independent observation.
What a bunch of classless clowns!
(Did you expect anything ELSE from the GOP?)
Huck will lose to any of the top three Dems by double digits according to recent polls.  Please Republicans, nominate him.
Huckabee has no money. How in the world is he going to win anywhere except Iowa? He is a wasted vote. Choose between Giuliana and Romney, they are the only ones who could win a national election.
Rudy wants to boss everyone around and waterboard anyone who disagrees with him and the redneck republican chickenhawk party
Torture seems to inspire all but MACAIN.That and the hatred of the peopel whos land you stole and called it texas.Quite an inspired bunch.

There is a work of fiction. The New York times thinks it has tapped into the Republican mind set. And what a shock to hear they came out with a negetive thought. I hear that it used to be a newspaper long ago before it was the Demacratic parties personal tabloid. Is there anyone who could not have predicted this story or one like it would not run in the Times during the campaign. I will go out on a limb and predict now that there will be yet more negetive stories in the times about Republicans and yet more pieces designed to flatter Clinton. And I'm not even psycic.
Hope everyone at FR is okay...

Van
Not inspired by the Republican field? Cut me a break! Typical of the MSM who don't see the change comming down the pipe. Over 75,000 members in meetups across the country. I have a hard time believing that people are not inspired. Even I am getting involved with politics this cycle. Dr. Paul cured my apathy!

Ron Paul '08
I think if the median backed off and gave equal time to all canadates and not have the american people liste just to who they think are the top runners we would have a different story.....Get rid of the polls they are a pain in the you know what and only discourage voters.....equal time for all same with advertising.....fed up with politics.
If Republicans are uninspired about their choices imagine how everyone else will feel about the nominee!
Looks like another Bob Dole year for the Republicans. Too bad. If Osammy wins we'll have Jessey Jackson and Al Sharpton running the country. If Hilliry wins we are headed for outright Socialism.
So, does this mean that no one can come up with anything to use against Ron Paul?
I don't beleive the Iowa primary is relevent to who finally gets the Republican nomination, history shows it's like winning the Heisman Trophy!
I am an inspired Ron Paul Republican!

However, I am uninspired by your lack of coverage of Ron Paul. There are many stories out there: Straw Polls being cancelled or bought, 20/20 interviews being kept off the air, major grassroots initiatives going on everyday. Also - why no credit for Ron Paul being right on Iran (even the Democrats where ready bomb), the dollar crisis (US vs Canadian dollar/Euro), the dangers of secret government (re: tape destruction)? Instead its a lot of nonsense on Kindergarten essays, who's going negative on who, who is more religious than who, and Oprah.

I have gone Door to Door to hundreds of houses, and most everyone (except Obama and Hillary supports - which are shockingly few) are very excited when I tell them what Ron Paul is all about. They say - why haven't I heard of him? This is across the board, Independents, Democrats, and Republicans - many non-Republicans here have switched registration to vote for Ron Paul. A sure thing - Ron Paul will do better than the major media is predicting. Isn't the message of getting back to the Constitution worthy of some discussion?

It's not too late for you guys to join and start reporting whats going on outside of Washington - this is a blog isn't it? Aren't blogs supposed to go further than the superficial programing on TV?
It's sad that Republicans are so frightened that they would resort to torture. But what's really nausiating is that they claim to be Christian.
[It's sad that Republicans are so frightened that they would resort to torture.]

Hey Erik, how's the food?

Democrats have resorted to torture also, else, how do you explain Hillary?

It is simply amazing that First Read would devote such space to other candidates and give one sentence to a man who exemplifies our Founding Fathers. Ron Paul is the one hope for our future. Read the wiki article on RP and then read it a second time. Peace.
Ron Paul has a sentence written about him today. It's good to see his name on this website.
Yeah I love MSNBC coverage of Ron Paul. Nothing but unrelated and obscure stories? Click on his name and you don't see anything. But apparently bickering and mudslinging really sells. After all the elections is the oldest american Soap opera?
It's got to be a great day for the GOP when Mike "GOMER PYLE" Huckabee is the leading candidate for the nomination.    SHIZZAAM
I would not go so far as to say that Republicans are not inspired by their choices so far.  Rather the real problem is that the press is giving almost exclusive coverage to the Democrats, this means that most Republicans don't know much about thier candidates so far.

Myself, I am not that inspired by Ron Paul, but for his supporters I say great job and keep getting his message out there.  Make sure that you reach as many people as you can to let them know what your candidate is about, after all if we wait for the press to do thier job and really inform the public we are going to have to wait a long time.

Erik, I am sorry but I don't understand your comment about torture, and to be honest I think everything about a Christian is nausiating to you so please don't act otherwise.  We all have beliefs that come in conflict with the world (what we wish it was like and what it is like), I do not support torture and I am sure that most would agree that the United States should not conduct torture, but by the same hand lets not just brush off the torture that the terrorist are doing in the name of thier non-Christian faith.  And before anyone accuses me of being anti-Muslim let me be very clear... there are terrible people doing terrible things in the name of many faiths and beliefs, I am just saying lets not act like we are the only ones in the history of the world that has ever conducted torture.  Thankfully we are a country of morals and beliefs and we condem the torture and won't tolerate it to continue.
Count me in on that Ron Paul bandwagon.  I hopped on after seeing him on a debate about 6 months ago.  I looked into him more (had to because the news networks refuse to give him much attention) and became inspired to spread the word myself.

I have a sign out front of my house, a bumper sticker on my car, and I've mailed out many letters across the country on his behalf.  Believe me - if you told me a year ago I'd be this excited about a politician or that I'd be donating my hard-earned money and spare time on his behalf - I would have said you were crazy.

Check him out - you'll see what all the excitement is about!
Bill Bryan of Cincinnati, you are an idiot!
I have a question. Why do I care that one candidate is more religious than an other? We don't vote for a candidate based on his religion. it is based on his credentials and their past political jobs. I really dont care that Huckabee was a Baptist Minister. The only thing that helps him with for being President is in public speaking.
If I were a Republican, I would not have the slightest clue who to support.  If Chuck Hagel were to vote, I believe it would make a difference.  He appears to be honest and a thinker, vs. going with the flow.  Why is he not in the running?
My God...Rudy...get a grip!  You are so full of yourself, you need to hold onto something while you speak in public these days.  All candidates go over their resumes but I have never seen someone so arrogant about it.
It is the establishment favorites that have depressed the soul of the party.

In contrast, Ron Paul has inspired many American citizens who have never voted to become politically active despite having been eligible for years. He has caused others to register Republican simply to vote for him. He has attracted a broad base of American youth. He has unified various wavelengths of the philosophical spectrum. The notion of a return to a genuinely free country beholden to its citizens is indeed exciting.
Hmm, so assuming that the intelligence about Iran "halting" their nuclear program in 2003 is true. Hmmm, <scratching head> what else occured in 2003?. ..... Oh yea, we invaded Iraq. Must have scared the, you know what, out of Iran. We know it brought Libya to it's senses.

Say what you will. But being tough is the way to go. Another Neville Chamberlain has no place at the start of this century.

Some of you may be scared that we are being tough. I ain't.
If I were a Republican, I would not have the slightest clue who to support.  If Chuck Hagel were to vote, I believe it would make a difference.  He appears to be honest and a thinker, vs. going with the flow.  Why is he not in the running?
Unispired? Naw, I would say more like tired. We've fought for over 3 generations to get a Republican Congress and Republican in the White House. Yea, we finally got that, but what did we get? George W. Bush and a Republican Congress that realized they now had the key to the safe and they spent like nobodies business.

I am a fighter for lower taxes, less government and less regulation to release the potential in the private sector. Any candidate who espouses the beliefs and thought of folks like F.A. Hayek, Milton Friedman and James Madison will get my vote.

Right now Rudy seems like the most fiscally conservative to be able to fight the Pelosi/Reid Congress and get some smaller government. Worked with Reagon/O'Neil and Clinton/Gingrich.

We as a Party need to return to our core fiscal beliefs and forget all the social stuff. That is how we will win next year. I think many Americans are leary of our social agenda. Sure we oppose the 'counter-culture', but we can't go around telling people how we believe they should live. I am a Christian, and know that Christ was too smart to get involved in politics. He said it best in parable (as He usually did) with Matthew 22:21 "They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's." Although Christ WAS a political revolutionary.

We need to return to our core fiscal conservative beliefs amd compare and contrast that with "your-favorite-Democrat". The thoughts and beliefs of folks like F.A. Hayek, Milton Friedman and James Madison need to be cool again.
I won't jump on the Ron Paul band wagon because there would be too much much whinning (in the odd chance) he gets elected and starts ending programs and closing departments.  If he didn't have to deal with Congress or any other country, he might do fine.  In an ideal world where everyone does what they are supposed to do, he would be a great candidate.

Many of the other candidates don't get me all warm and giggly.  There is concern that all of these candidates have too many faults.

Forgot to say, with that said, I am pulling for Rudy.
[The Chicago Tribune fact-checks Giuliani's ad ...  "The best way you deal with dictators, the best way you deal with tyrants and terrorists is you stand up to them, you don't back down."
But that's pretty much the opposite of what America did ...]
--DON'T TRY TO CONFUSE REPUBLICANS WITH THE FACTS!!!  They speak the truth, which is independent of facts.

I see no reason not to pull this out of context:
[Mr. Giuliani, who as New York mayor temporarily moved in with two gay roommates after he separated from his wife.]

Huckabee and his embargo: Just to get foreign policy straight, since Huckabee is so strong in that area.  Even though we are already tough on Cuba, don't they have economic support from Europe and such?  I heard they have a pretty popular and nice tourism industry.  I'm just saying, is our current 'plan' working and is our current 'plan' going to work, or is it also being put off for the future like Iraq, Iran, Immigration, our faltering economy, Climate Change, Renewable Energy, fixing our healthcare system, the list goes on, etc ...  WHAT HAS BUSH ACCOMPLISHED, or do we have a system the rewards ineptitude?
Matt, from Philly, Yes, we Republicans need to watch what RP is doing. I recently got an email from 'The Cato Institute' and they talked about his libertarian leanings. I belive we as a party need to pickup more of our libertarian side. I like Ron, except for his views on foreign policy. Particularly Iraq. I believe in 30-50 years, Bush will be vindicated on Iraq.
That's right, MSNBC, just keep ignoring Ron Paul like he doesn't exist.  I'm sure he'll disappear if you wish him away.

The truth is that there are a bunch of inspired, charged Republicans right now, and they happen to be supporters of Ron Paul.
Anyone interested in what Huckabee is really like face to face should try this funny (but it actually happened) column:
http://goupstate.us/index.php/lanefiller/2007/11/02/title_14
Rudy’s A-hole Quotient just quadrupled. Anyone who was sentient in 1980 (and not dripping with GOP spin) remembers that the 52 American hostages were finally freed from Iran as a direct result of hardscrabble, back-breaking DIPLOMATIC work done behind the scenes by Jimmy Carter and the Algerian government. That in fact, Carter pulled an all-nighter his last night in office to ensure that no last-second hitch prevented the deal from going through. And, as it later came out, that Reagan made a secret pact with the terrorists to sell them missiles if they embarrassed Carter by waiting til just after the oath of office to release them. A pact which famously went on to become The Iran-Contra Scandal.

WTF did Reagan do his last night in office, play golf & smoke stogies?

As for Rudy’s cryptic, seeming reference to “love the sinner not the sin,” he leaves himself wide open as embracing the classic James Dobson argument, and all the implications that his pride marching & other gay rimjobs of the 90s were pure BS posturing, unless he clarifies his statement. So far, his campaign refuses to. Which means all those socially moderate people who seem to think he’s some kind of messiah just lost one of the last things distinguishing him from the rest of the backward, gay-hating GOP pack of wolves.
OSAMMY AND HILLBILLY I BELIEVE THIS IS THE BEST THE
