Minutemen founder backs Huckabee

Posted: Tuesday, December 11, 2007 12:18 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa -- Huckabee announced this morning the endorsement of Jim Gilchrist, the founder of the anti-illegal immigration and border security group the Minutemen. More to come.

Huckabee also responded on Romney's ad, outlining differences on immigration. “I'm somewhat flattered as I seem to be the recipient of the first negative attack ad in the Republican Primary," Huckabee said. "That's usually a sign of desperation on the part of an opponent who feels that his only way of winning is to attack and to destroy."

More: “The people of Iowa, especially I think, are turned off by negative attack ads, and that campaign can call that [ad] anything it wants, but that's what it is, and it's the first one of the season, and we feel honored to be in the middle of it. My experience is people here kind of want to vote for somebody not just against somebody, and they like to believe that a candidate has enough of a platform that he can stand on it not knock the props out from under the guy next to him.

"If the basis of running for the presidency is, 'Let me tell you what's wrong with the other guy,' not 'Let me tell you what I'd do for America,' I think the people of Iowa -- who have been through this so many times, will say, 'I vote for the guy who has a plan for the future of America' not just somebody looking around and saying, as the tattle tale in the third grade, let me tell you what this guy's doing. We didn't like it when we were in the third grade. I don't think we like it electing a president either."

Huckabee insinuates Romney camp 'desperate,' 'frantic':
"I think they're going to make every allegation in the world. Look how many press releases come out of some of these camps per day. It's kind of like, we found something else, here's something. As long as you guys will report it they'll keep fishing it out there, so we understand that.

"This is politics and everybody understands it. Look I've been through this so many times in Arkansas, you got to understand. I swam through about as turbulent a body of water as anybody ever swims through to get elected to something. Being a Republican in my state was, as I often say, tantamount to being a fire hydrant in a neighborhood full of dogs, so this isn't the first time I've experienced this, and I've experienced it in a lot harsher ways and it'll get worse before it gets better.

"The more desperate and frantic campaigns get when they see how much money they've spend and we're winning, that causes people to do some sometimes desperate things, and that's part of the deal."

Romney campaign responds: "It’s important that voters making a decision about who to select as our party’s nominee know where the candidates stand on an important issue like immigration.

"Governor Romney’s pro-enforcement position is one that Iowans would agree with.  Mike Huckabee’s belief that taxpayer dollars should pay for tuition breaks for illegal immigrants is entirely at odds with many Iowans.  That is important information for voters to have when choosing our party’s nominee.

"The message being delivered to voters is a contrast that draws distinctions between the two candidates on an important issue.  It’s substantive and relevant to the political debate.

"Mike Huckabee won’t refute his position on providing taxpayer-funded tuition breaks to illegal immigrants."

More: "Our campaign has the resources, the message and the organization to compete in all the early primary states. Campaigns are, fundamentally, a contest of ideas and a vision for the future. Governor Romney is committed to leading a party of economic conservatives, social conservatives and security conservatives. In a contest of ideas, Mike Huckabee's record of more taxes, more spending and weak border security positions will lose out because those positions are at odds with our party's viewpoint and our core beliefs."

Isnt it a contradiction that Huckabee is an ordained minister, but in the light of politics seems to be switching his attitudes to conform to the latest hot-button issues.  So much for virtue, integrity,  and honesty, even from the pulpit.  Politics corrupts, and presidential politics corrupts at the executive and spiritual level.

Are there any honest men or women still out there to get us out of this mess created in the last 8 years?

Give us a break about this christian nonsense. What is a christian? Nothing more nor less than a hypocrite!
The only christians I admire are the Amish. They DO live their beliefs.
Huck boy is no Amish.
Look what's coming out of the woodwork as as the Rpublicans try to out-run each other on the issue of immigration! Will the next President be elected on the backs of the poor and humble folk we don't know what to do about? None of these bozos have aclure about how to address this seriouxs problem.
Dear "Erik:" I thought the Grand Dragon of the KKK was Senator Byrd of West Virginia. Doesn't he tend to endorse Democrats?
Wrong again Philip,
Both Romney AND the Huckster are incompetent CLOWNS;

"Jim Gilchrist here speaks only for Jim Gilchrist, he does not speak for the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, nor is he nationally representative of most patriots in the "Minuteman movement" – who under no circumstances could ignore the failed record nor endorse the duplicitous “plan” recently rolled out by candidate Mike Huckabee.  The national media needs to recognize that Jim Gilchrist’s endorsement is his own personal statement, nothing more."

Do your homework BEFORE you choose a candidate.
In the worst financial year of my life (two of three members of my household hospitalized with $35K in bills) I broke out my checkbook for the FIRST TIME in my political life to give to an individual candidate:  a buck for Huck.  Well, a few more than "A buck".

I did it because I believed his "intrinsic value" and dignity demonstrated towards the children of illegal aliens was refreshing and more congruent with my Pro-Live position (yes... pro-life extends beyond the womb...).  I have proudly sported my Huckabee bumper sticker since... oh, about July.

I am extremely disappointed with his about-face cave in to inflammatory rhetoric in our fraction-ed party.  I thought my $20.08 was buying me a nice pair of stilettos that elevated our party a few inches about the rhetoric.  What I ended up with was a cheap pair of flat flip-flops.

Huck, you've got the Minutemen... you don't need my vote.  Can I get a refund?
...please stand up, please stand up.  He will, if this goes on.
Well all I can say is Huckabee and his sidekick Gilchrist had better get their lies together on birthright citizenship. One thing we don't need is a repeat of the last 7 years and it looks like that is just where we are headed with this team. check out this article.

Gilchrist has been a loose cannon for a long time. Huckabee wanted to appear to be tough on illegal immigration, so they turned to each other. Wrong move for both of them.
Huckabee is an AMNESTY MAN!!  Claims to be a christian...and deceives the voters!!  I am sick of dirty politicans that will do or say anything to get elected.  We've had enough of TRAITORS!!!  It's time to find a candidate with integrity and honesty that will ACTUALLY WORK FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!!!  Huckabee is not that person!!!!
America!  Are we sick and tired of lying politicians YET???
National Deception: Mike Huckabee and Jim Gilchrist Lie To America

January 9, 2007

CONTACT: William Gheen, Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC), press@alipac.us (866) 329-3999

Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee and Minuteman Co-Founder Jim Gilchrist have been documented lying to America by the Washington Times today after false headlines ran on Tuesday proclaiming Mike Huckabee would try to remove birthright citizenship from the Constitution.

The article confirms that Huckabee lied on CNN about his campaign being contacted about Gilchrist's false statements and Gilchrist lied in a release about Huckabee's immigration stances.

Gilchrist put out a press release on Iowa's election eve, under the fake name of "Perry Emerson” that contained several false statements and embellishments of Huckabee's immigration stances. The release claimed Huckabee would try to reverse birthright citizenship laws, which are widely exploited by illegal aliens.

"We are doing our best to get the truth about these lies, and the hidden amnesty component of the Huckabee immigration plan to the public," says William Gheen of ALIPAC. "So far, the majority of the national media is not reporting these facts and voters wonder why they are hearing the news from us instead of CNN and Fox. This is a grand national deception in motion and it is absolutely blasphemous that voters are being deceived on a massive scale."

ALIPAC launched a campaign to warn voters about Huckabee's statements on Fox News on Dec. 9 2007, where Huckabee stated illegal aliens could leave the US and return within days permanently and legally. This information was only reported once on Fox and is not included in Huckabee's distributed immigration plan. The national media is not telling voters that over 84 immigration enforcement organizations, including multiple Minuteman groups, have rebuked Gilchrist's endorsement of Huckabee.

"When lies of this scale go unchecked by the media, it is no wonder that our nation is in such great peril today," said William Gheen. "The Huckabee and Gilchrist immigration deception is a national disaster in motion that will have far reaching negative ramifications for America. Mike Huckabee and Jim Gilchrist are successfully deceiving American voters and they must be stopped."

Copies of Gilchrist's fake name press release, the Washington Times Articles, copies of the video of Huckabee's "illegals back in days" comments, and the letter signed by the vast majority of groups fighting illegal immigration are available at www.alipac.us

All members of the media are asked to tell voters the truth before it is to late.
