INMAN, S.C. -- McCain had harsh words for the Democrats at a campaign breakfast stop today here. He said any plans to not pass the funding of the war in Iraq would jeapordize the strategy for success.
"Today as we speak in the halls of Congress, Democrats are attempting again to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory," McCain told the diners at The Skillet Restaurant. "They are trying to cut off the funding to the men and women and the mission in Iraq that is succeeding….We are winning in Iraq. We are winning in Iraq unless they cut off the funding and set a day for withdrawal, which they’ve been trying to do. I can only draw one conclusion: their political priorities have overtaken their dedication to our nation’s security.”
Displaying a sense of urgency, he said, "I may sound angry, and that's because I am."
He also took on the liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org. “My friends, MoveOn told the Democratic senators who are running for president yesterday that they had to filibuster. In other words, block the funding for the war in Iraq or they wouldn’t support them. My friends, we have reached a sad day in America.”
McCain also told the diners he may have to leave the campaign trail and go back to Washington to deal with the issue. "I’m not going to let them get away with this," he said. "I’m not going to let them set a date for surrender. I’m not going to let them lose this war.”
