Oh-eight (D): Two polls, two views

Posted: Wednesday, December 12, 2007 8:58 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under:

The new Washington Post/ABC poll has Clinton still clobbering the Dem field. And it didn't take Mark Penn but a few minutes to update his poll memo to use this survey as evidence that everything is fine for Clinton.

Meanwhile, a new University of New Hampshire poll (sponsored by CNN/WMUR) shows Obama's momentum continuing. Clinton's lead is now just one point, 31%-30%, with Edwards in third at 16%. On the GOP side, the picture is about the same as it was before in other polls -- with Romney at 32%, Giuliani and McCain tied at 19%, and Huckabee a distant fourth with 9%, just ahead of Ron Paul at 7%.

BIDEN: The Boston Globe front-pages Biden. “When Biden first ran for president in 1988 at age 44, he was the Democrats' candidate of passion, an idealist calling upon his generation to seize its moment to change politics - and often dismissed as a lightweight for it. "I was the Barack Obama!" he marveled over mozzarella sticks, spaghetti, and Coke at a Mason City sports bar. This time, lost in a race centered on the relative merits of experience and vision, Biden is emphasizing a less inspirational quality: expertise.”

CLINTON: The New York Times has a fascinating piece on Clinton's Iowa campaign, which probably should be read in full by everybody. But here are our can't miss highlights: "Nowhere are her problems more on display than in this state, where success lies in building a person-to-person network of supporters. And nowhere is the Clinton campaign - which to some Iowans had appeared ignorant of the political subtleties, if not arrogant about them - working more urgently to recalibrate and head off defeat as the Jan. 3 caucus approaches.”

“‘Here’s the bottom line: They had not worked this state,’ said Teresa Vilmain, the Iowa state director, who was brought in here in a quiet campaign shake-up that took place early last summer, when Mrs. Clinton first saw signs of problems here. ‘We had a lot of ground to cover. It’s a challenge.’”

"The signs of Mrs. Clinton’s concern have been on increasing display here in recent days as the campaign has been moving rapidly to make up for earlier mistakes. Her aides said she had largely cleared her schedule this week to prepare for the Democratic debate on Thursday sponsored by The Des Moines Register, the final encounter here among all the candidates, which they now view as one of their final opportunities to shift the momentum back to her favor."

Also interesting: "Mrs. Clinton has begun displaying a level of personal interest in the details of the campaign here that is unusual for even a presidential candidate named Clinton. After every stop, Mrs. Clinton questions her advisers about how many attendees have signed the pledge cards that she has come to learn are an integral part of nailing down supporters."

And this may be the most important factoid in the story: "Mrs. Clinton’s advisers said they would continue at least some form of attack on Mr. Obama, even at the risk of allowing Mr. Edwards to gain ground by presenting himself as above the fray. Mrs. Clinton’s aides said they were far more worried about Mr. Obama marching out of Iowa with a victory than they were about Mr. Edwards, who has far less money and lacks a strong base of support in New Hampshire."

According to the New York Daily News, Bill Clinton is unhappy with the state of the campaign right now. “Sources familiar with the ex-President's thinking say he doesn't believe his wife's situation is desperate. But he's unhappy with her operation - once hailed as a juggernaut - and concerned she could lose the Democratic nomination without major alterations in strategy and staffing."

Politico's Ben Smith -- like us -- is obsessed with figuring out who is behind HillaryIs44.org. As he points out, it's just too professional to simply be a "fan" site.

KUCINICH: The candidate’s campaign released this statement over the night regarding Kucinich’s exclusion from Thursday’s Des Moines Register debate: “The highest polling Democratic Presidential candidate among the Party's progressive, grassroots, activist base, Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich, has been excluded from the Des Moines Register-sponsored Presidential debate here on Thursday because his Iowa field director operates from a home office rather than a rented storefront.”

OBAMA: Obama says in The Boston Globe: “And so the point is, whether it's cultural wars or how we think about our foreign policy or how we think about our economics, the baby boom generation resolved a lot of these conflicts in their own lives, but our politics remained stuck in this deeply polarized pattern. And that's the reason people are so frustrated. That's why people don't ever see themselves reflected in the debates. And part of the reason why I think we've done well historically is that I'm using a language that I think is more in tune with the American people, which says, I'm not going to demonize you because you disagree with me, that I don't think the Democrats have a monopoly on wisdom.”

In a conference call yesterday with reporters to announce the endorsement of New Hampshire Rep. Carol Shea Porter (D), NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan reports, Obama argued that the latest New York Times/CBS poll that found that Democrats view Senator Hillary Clinton as more electable in a general election doesn't reflect the view on the ground in the early states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.  "Generally, national polls in terms of who Democrats think are most electable still track national polls in terms of who they are planning to vote for. And we haven't seen the shift at the national level that we've seen at the local level. And when you ask the voters in those early states who are now familiar with my record, her record, other candidates records, you see a very different result," Obama said.

RICHARDSON: Per his campaign, Richardson will deliver a policy address in Sioux City, IA on “the importance of renewing our commitment to jobs and education in America.” According to excerpts, Richardson will say: “Everywhere I go, I see people working for America. But America doesn’t seem to be working for them. I can sense the insecurity out there. And it’s not just about keeping our homeland safe. It’s about keeping safe our trust that the American government is on the side of the middle class. It’s about keeping safe our belief that every American deserves a quality education -- and affirming that our country needs educated citizens if we are to stay strong.”

And: “You know, every candidate in this race is asking for the biggest job promotion of their life.  Now, if you’ve ever asked for a promotion, you know that the first question is going to be. ‘What have you done lately?’ So let’s look at what the Senate has done in the last twelve months since my colleagues took over the leadership of Congress. Did they get us out of Iraq? No. Did they scrap No Child Left Behind and reform education? No. Do million of poor children have the health insurance they need? No. Did they stop an Attorney General who wouldn’t say that waterboarding is torture? No. Have they done enough to stop this country from slipping into recession? No. Are millions of Americans worried about keeping their jobs and their homes and their quality of life? Yes. I know that we can do better. And I have done better.”

And we thought Richardson was being Mr. Nice Guy in the Dem race…

OOOOOOOBAMA is on fire!!!!!!!!!!!

Oprah is a genius - the real firewall is in South Carolina and belongs to OBAMA - HRC is going to get less than a third of the male vote, less than half the female affinity vote, and OBAMA is going to get 85% of the black affinity vote in SC and it will be time for Dandy Don Merideth to sing turn out the lights.

Nepotism in America is a non starter!
It's great to have internet & heat again! Senator Biden is the candidate of experience and credibility.
Hmmmmmmm---let's see:  The Oprah-Effect is waning, the Rep Field is engaged in nasty in-fighting, and the Economy is Job #1.  And people--get this straight:  THIS ELECTION IS GLOBAL--AND THE ONE CANDIDATE THAT CAN STAND TOE TO TOE WITH EVERY DICTATOR AND THUG THREATENING YOUR FAMILY FROM AROUND THE GLOBE IS THE ONE WEARING HEELS!  You don't have to like her, but she's the one that THEY fear and respect.  She's a tough broad, but she's got my vote!  Think about it.....
Let Mark Penn spin the number. Its remind me of Rove the Maths theory, Mr. Penn will wake up the 4 th and understand that the American people decide for themeselve not the Rovian MATH. Fire up and Ready to GOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OBAMA 08
No one has ever lost Iowa and NH, and went on to win their parties nomination. Hillary will not be the exception. History has shown that the national polls at this time are meaningless.
Should we elect the most capable candidate out there? Should we not elect Biden? Should expertise, experience and results be the deciding factor?
Biden is all about Biden. Look & see what he's done for Delaware!
The Clinton people also were a sieve to the media. Here we go again, more leaking...
Gunner, why Clinton as opposed to Biden? Who actually has proven he can stand up to worldwide thugs? Remebmer when he stood face to face with Milosevic and called him a thug? A war criminal? BIDEN is the consumate world leader we need in the White house. They know him and deal with him. Did Musharaf or Bhutto call Clinton? No, they called on Biden, even before Bush. If this election is global and a test to world leaders, then you must admit that Biden is the better candidate. He doesn't tout his resume....he works it.
Del Rep.
I live 5 minutes outside of Deleware near Philly. I have many friends and family that live all over the state andI've never eally heard anything bad about it. I do know that I do all my christmas shopping there. What have you done for Delaware?
So much for the polls that said Oprah wouldn't have an effect.
remember the phrase "it's the economy stupid"! that phrase is now "it's the war and the economy stupid"! you can't seperate the two as the projected $2.4 trill over 10 years and flood down effect costs on gas and impact that has on retail economy attack the family budget. you must elect a president to handle the war and foreign affairs or the economy continues in a downward spiral! that candidate is joe biden. he's the most experienced and competent in that area and is the domain of the president. domestic policy of immigration, budget, health care will be hammered out by congress and its committees and with a trifecta [house, senate, pres.]the demo agenda will pass in some form including most of these candidates positions. foreign affairs is not a party decision a bush has demonstrated and can be directed by the president. while the other candidates trot out their celebs biden relies on his own celebs, the candidates themselves! THEIR CHORUS OF "JOE'S RIGHT" on iraq, pakistan, and the way to end the war is his celeb endorsement! take them at their word and elect the source of their praise, joe biden. p;ut on our own surge to combat bush and gop by raising biden up in the polls to whop ass in 08'. vote joe biden.
Ask some of the people in Iowa what's going on and you'll get a different story. Obama is all hype here. For every blogger he picks up he his losing 2 folks who will actually go to the caucus. The consensus among vets here is that he is weak and the Republicans will smack him around mercilessly. If you liked Dukakis and Kerry in the general, then you will absolutely LOVE Obama. Clinton has peaked and the movement is all toward Edwards and Biden, with B-Rich fading fast.
Don't get all excited about numbers, they are abstracts after all.
When the voting comes the music is over and the humm of the process will drive the engine faster. YEHAH.
Expertise is inspirational for me!  Go Biden!  Place Third or a close-Fourth in Iowa and this race will turn!

DeRepublican:
You consistently make this same statement.  Well I live in Delaware also, and here are just a few of the things he has done for us working with Carper:2.5 million to construct runway and taxiway for the Delaware Air Park in Dover,
3 million for the Indian River Inlet Bridge
2 million for turnpike improvements along I-95 and Sr-1,1 million to help the state purchase new full-sized buses for transit service in NC County.1 million for the University of Delaware's fuel cell hybrid bus program ;275,000 for Delaware's Job Access and Reverse Commuter Grant Program to help welfare recipients get to work,250,000 to construct a new Easter Seals Facility in Georgetown to address the urgent need for expanded services for children and adults with disabilities,250,000 for the expansion of
the Beebe Medical Center's School of Nursing to accomodate additional students,200,000 to expand St. Michael's School and Nursery to provide space needed to serve up to 35% more infants and preschoolers and 50% more children for Kindergarten and summer camp.

All of this in just one Bill. I could go on for weeks ,but your name explains it all.  Delaware has re-elected Joe for all these years because he is good for Delaware.  35 years speaks for itself.  Either come up with a republican who can do better and beat him or SHUT UP!!
while Obama is winning in the state polling, the press is all aglow about some national polls and keeps touting them on tv.  One newcaster just called it the 'clinton comeback'.  Can you believe how the press is just so excited when the proof is in the early state polling that tells a different story.
Like my husband said, 'amazing what a little money will do'
DeRepub:  Delaware is a great place to live, raise a family and retire.
Scott in PA--I do not disagree with you regarding Biden's foreign policy expertise.  IMO Joe would be an EXTRORDINARY Sec. of State, where he would be MOST effective--backed up by a tough administration that advocates for strong diplomacy.  But I do maintain that HRC is the most broadly experienced for both domestic and global issues.  My hope is that she surrounds herself with wise well-reasoned persons and utilizes them where they can each have the most impact.  I would support Richardson as well for some appointment, and perhaps even Edwards.  But at this point I will still caucus for HRC.
"Mrs. Clinton has begun displaying a level of personal interest in the details of the campaign here that is unusual for even a presidential candidate named Clinton ..."
--Sounds like somebody's learning to micromanage.  Seriously though, too much management is not a good thing.  I've seen numerous people, outside the political spectrum, do such, and they all burn out or operate burned out.  I hope H.R. Clinton doesn't burn out.

"Mrs. Clinton’s advisers said they would continue at least some form of attack on Mr. Obama ..."
--They are worried, they should be, and there is nothing wrong with 'attacking' Sen. Obama.  Look, neither Clinton anticipated Sen. Obama's smash success for the nomination, he entered the race seemingly out of nowhere (A F. Thompson success story--people wanted B.H. Obama to run).  But she has a significant opp. research department (Obama has one too), and now is the time H.R. Clinton's campaign will start to leak such to the media--the silly questionnaire for one.  I, for one, won't campaign about what will appear as a media bias against Obama, because it's good to test him, and I know he can and will take anything a Clinton has to throw at him!

"And part of the reason why I think we've done well historically is that I'm using a language that I think is more in tune with the American people, which says, I'm not going to demonize you because you disagree with me, that I don't think the Democrats have a monopoly on wisdom."
--This is the Sen. B.H. Obama that I liked.  The Obama that has Democratic views, but can be tough on Democrats.  My first impression of him, was hearing him saying that Democrats have to be tough and stand tall, both true (though, has he really done that in the Senate?).  I think he will do that as President, though.  Clearly, he also understands that everybody has good points: left, right and middle; and I really like that.  Finally, he does use his language in such a way that is appealing for a wider base.  FR did the "can you tell Sen. Obama and Sen. Clinton statements apart" awhile back.  Everybody I saw got it right, for a variety of reasons, mine was the language.  Sen. Obama speaks more of national security and bringing the country together, not how much Pres. Bush has failed and Bush has.  Some of his rivals seem to more enjoy talking down of the views Republicans and Republican supporters, Obama doesn't.  And that is why he will be 'ObamaIs44'.
Hillary is leading Obama by 30% in the ABC national poll - that is a HUGE margin.  So how come Obama hasn't caught up nationally as Huckabee has - after months of campaigning, heavy spending and endless publicity, he reamains well behind Hillary nationally.

I'm voting for Biden because I want a President who is smarter than his secretary of state.
Except the media are blind to what happened in Manchester, NH on Sunday. I am pretty sure the Clinton would like to have Oprah in their camp but they don't.

Like i said on Monday, there is nobody that wasn't moved by Obama on that day. I don't think the press captured the moment in their reporting but CNN polls that just came out nailed it.

How can you choose Hillary over Obama?  That is just impossible to do. In the midst of all odds, folks defiled the weather; ditch Patriot game and showed up for the rally. Guess what happen? They were not disappointed as they leave.
Gunner:

What has Hillary done that makes her more broadly experienced in domestic and global issues than Biden is?

I like Hillary a lot, and I think she has a lot of excellent qualities that would serve her well as president.  However, if you match her up against Biden on experience - foreign or domestic - he wins hands down.  He wins hands down against her and every other candidate in the field - Democrat or Republican.

Real Clear Politics.  Go to the website.  That poll with Clinton 30% above Obama is obviously bologne.  The current average is around 17%.  Mark Penn isn't fooling anyone.  Clinton didn't jump from 10% above Obama nationally in some polls to 30% overnight.  Nothing happened.  Obama still isn't Muslim.  No one cares that he smoked marijuana the correct way (as opposed to Clinton, who 'didn't inhale').  The numbers didn't change.  Just an outlier...
Check out this video of Hillary shaking hands after an event... she has the elementary school aged group so excited.

I'm with you Carrie!

Vote Biden '08!

Come on Iowa.  Help him out.  Caucus, caucus, caucus!  He needs you.
First Read please correct this comment "Clinton's lead is now just one point, 31%-30%"...

Clinton lost her lead and is now tied with Obama.
or Obama now tied for lead in NH.
I write this having voted for Bill twice. Will Gunner or any other Hillary lover please tell me how being a former first lady with "35 years -- as an advocate for children and families, as a citizen-activist" makes anyone qualified to be President of the United States. Maybe she could run for President of the Girl Scouts of America... maybe. I wish all the Hillary lovers would just admit that they are voting for Hillary because of her gender and that they want to see a woman in the White House. How short sighted! She would be absolutely aweful. And now the real Hillary is coming out... desperate, ruthless, mean as a snake. She would eat a baby to become the first woman President of the US. Ambition is good, but blind obsession is NOT what this country needs, especially after 8 years of Bush. I don't have anything against a woman becoming President (it will happen one day) but, please, not Hillary. She will be eaten alive when the Republicans get ahold of her. And if she does manage to win, get used to 4 years of 51% vs. 49% nasty, gridlock. No thanks!

We can do much better. Open your eyes, people, Joe Biden is right in front of you. He is the right person at the right time for the job.
Obama is the clear leader amongst these calculating politicians.  Hillary, please..... the last thing we need is more of the same....flip flopping, backtracking, fearmongering, idiocy.  Clinton go away.  Voting for her just because you want a woman president is very short-sighted.
Whta experience does HRC have on any of these issues?  Did I miss something?
The national pools are meaningless...I know that's been said before...but it's so true. Only 3 polls, IA, NH, SC have any meaning at this point. Does anyone think that this will be more than a 2 person race by Feb 5th? If Edwards has not bowed out be Feb 5th, he will at least be completely marginalized. The national polls will become important when they reflect only 2 choices. At this point it might be wise to do a poll with just Hillary and Obama.
Gunner,
Kato nailed it. To Clinton supporters: please ask yourself why someone who is better qualified as SoS is not better qualified as President. Biden, including his 35 years in the senate dealing with domestic issues directly, will know how to direct his staff from day 1, not have his staff direct him like HRC and other front runners. This, btw, is what got Bush in trouble. Let's vote for what we know, let's not hope that we're voting for good cabinet appointments to help out KNOWN shortfalls.
The more I hear about Biden, I MUST admit the more I like him. I truly wish he had the money and organizations that Clinton and Obama have. I think any democratic administration would be wise to tap him for Sec. of State.
Our man may be behind the rest, but his stance on issues is the right stance.  He is principled, and honest.  He has demonstrated with his congressional vote over and over that he will do what he believes is right, not just what is popular.  I cannot vote for Hillary, Edwards, Obama, to say nothing about the Republican candidates, because they have all voted both for the war in Iraq and to continue funding it, yet now they talk out of the other side of their mouths.  I will vote for Dennis Kucinich in 2008.  Any other choice, Republican or Democrat will mean nothing in terms of change for America.  Vote Kucinich
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,948057-1,00.html

That is the link to a story about Kucinich.....
One of America's worst Mayors.....
And you liberal idiots want him as president???????

No one has ever lost Iowa and NH, and went on to win their parties nomination. Hillary will not be the exception. History has shown that the national polls at this time are meaningless.

------------
While that may be true, the difference this time around is that unlike prior years, we have a super-duper primary tuesday when a vast majority of the primary votes will be cast on the same day.  So, that might change things.
I would vote for Joe Biden.

Except for this "he marveled over mozzarella sticks, spaghetti, and Coke at a Mason City sports bar".

Coke, at a sports bar? Sorry Joe.
OK jerry/corpus christi texas, I guess you voted for George Bush and you will vote for Clinton as well. Kucinich is the best person to change the country, the problem is that there are people like you who get spoon fed and can never understand what is right for themselves. I hope we can all relize that this election is fixed for Clinton to win. Please vote for Kucinich!!! and make a change.
Some Americans still don't get it after seven years of incompetence.  We are voting for the President of the United States; we are not voting for who you would most like to drink beers with in a sports bar.
Joe Biden is the most qualified person to be President period.
Wow, if the Democrats nominate anyone other than Richardson then they are selling their chances at victory to the Republicans. As usual, we can't trust Democrats to nominate their own best candidate, or even second best (Edwards). It's always someone with no chance at winning a general election, such as Kerry, Obama, or Hillary. When will the party wake up?

Guess I'll just have to hope Ron Paul wins the GOP nod.
Iowans are going to send a very clear signal to the rest of the country on January 3rd - Senator Barack Obama is just as ready, willing, and able to lead as was Abraham Lincoln, FDR, and JFK -- and he has a clear vision for America that will get us back on track.  And here is a good makeup for an Obama Administration:
Biden - Sec'y of Defense
Clinton - Sec'y of Education
Edwards - Attorney General
Richardson - Sec'y of State
Dodd - Sec'y of HUD
Kucinich - Sec'y of the Dept of Peace
Gravel - a Senator for Alaska, again

The qualifications to be President are that they win the most votes in the Electoral College, period.  Let the American people decide, not the Clinton political machine, or the MSM.  It's time for "Change We Can Believe In"!
OK jerry/corpus christi texas, I guess you voted for George Bush and you will vote for Clinton as well. Kucinich is the best person to change the country,

David in Glendale.....

yes I voted for President Bush.....
Would rather jump off a bridge then vote for Hillary..
I've met Dennis Kucinich.......
wondered why he kept looking at the sky while he was talking to me....Looking for UFO's maybe????

Scott, PA (Sent Wednesday, December 12, 2007 12:34 PM)

Why not ask that question to Obama or Edwards supporters as well?  I hope you are not suggesting that Biden's qualifications are superior only to Hillary, and not to Obama and Edwards.

What should he have been drinking?  What drink, in your estimation, qualifies one to be the president?

Carrie,

CHERRY Coke, of course. Can't beat it.
Boooo J!  I do NOT like Cherry Coke.  Coke Zero, maybe.  Diet Coke, definitely.  Maybe even go a little crazy and have me a Dr. Pepper.  But not Cherry Coke if I can help it.  :)

Come on! Cherry Coke is my favorite! Sometimes I'll settle for Cherry Pepsi, but only because it makes me feel "Wild" (haha). Dr. Pepper is okay too. But there's a big drop off after Cherry Coke. You gotta love cherry!
