Oh-eight (D): Two polls, two views

Posted: Wednesday, December 12, 2007 8:58 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under:

The new Washington Post/ABC poll has Clinton still clobbering the Dem field. And it didn't take Mark Penn but a few minutes to update his poll memo to use this survey as evidence that everything is fine for Clinton.

Meanwhile, a new University of New Hampshire poll (sponsored by CNN/WMUR) shows Obama's momentum continuing. Clinton's lead is now just one point, 31%-30%, with Edwards in third at 16%. On the GOP side, the picture is about the same as it was before in other polls -- with Romney at 32%, Giuliani and McCain tied at 19%, and Huckabee a distant fourth with 9%, just ahead of Ron Paul at 7%.

BIDEN: The Boston Globe front-pages Biden. “When Biden first ran for president in 1988 at age 44, he was the Democrats' candidate of passion, an idealist calling upon his generation to seize its moment to change politics - and often dismissed as a lightweight for it. "I was the Barack Obama!" he marveled over mozzarella sticks, spaghetti, and Coke at a Mason City sports bar. This time, lost in a race centered on the relative merits of experience and vision, Biden is emphasizing a less inspirational quality: expertise.”

CLINTON: The New York Times has a fascinating piece on Clinton's Iowa campaign, which probably should be read in full by everybody. But here are our can't miss highlights: "Nowhere are her problems more on display than in this state, where success lies in building a person-to-person network of supporters. And nowhere is the Clinton campaign - which to some Iowans had appeared ignorant of the political subtleties, if not arrogant about them - working more urgently to recalibrate and head off defeat as the Jan. 3 caucus approaches.”

“‘Here’s the bottom line: They had not worked this state,’ said Teresa Vilmain, the Iowa state director, who was brought in here in a quiet campaign shake-up that took place early last summer, when Mrs. Clinton first saw signs of problems here. ‘We had a lot of ground to cover. It’s a challenge.’”

"The signs of Mrs. Clinton’s concern have been on increasing display here in recent days as the campaign has been moving rapidly to make up for earlier mistakes. Her aides said she had largely cleared her schedule this week to prepare for the Democratic debate on Thursday sponsored by The Des Moines Register, the final encounter here among all the candidates, which they now view as one of their final opportunities to shift the momentum back to her favor."

Also interesting: "Mrs. Clinton has begun displaying a level of personal interest in the details of the campaign here that is unusual for even a presidential candidate named Clinton. After every stop, Mrs. Clinton questions her advisers about how many attendees have signed the pledge cards that she has come to learn are an integral part of nailing down supporters."

And this may be the most important factoid in the story: "Mrs. Clinton’s advisers said they would continue at least some form of attack on Mr. Obama, even at the risk of allowing Mr. Edwards to gain ground by presenting himself as above the fray. Mrs. Clinton’s aides said they were far more worried about Mr. Obama marching out of Iowa with a victory than they were about Mr. Edwards, who has far less money and lacks a strong base of support in New Hampshire."

According to the New York Daily News, Bill Clinton is unhappy with the state of the campaign right now. “Sources familiar with the ex-President's thinking say he doesn't believe his wife's situation is desperate. But he's unhappy with her operation - once hailed as a juggernaut - and concerned she could lose the Democratic nomination without major alterations in strategy and staffing."

Politico's Ben Smith -- like us -- is obsessed with figuring out who is behind HillaryIs44.org. As he points out, it's just too professional to simply be a "fan" site.

KUCINICH: The candidate’s campaign released this statement over the night regarding Kucinich’s exclusion from Thursday’s Des Moines Register debate: “The highest polling Democratic Presidential candidate among the Party's progressive, grassroots, activist base, Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich, has been excluded from the Des Moines Register-sponsored Presidential debate here on Thursday because his Iowa field director operates from a home office rather than a rented storefront.”

OBAMA: Obama says in The Boston Globe: “And so the point is, whether it's cultural wars or how we think about our foreign policy or how we think about our economics, the baby boom generation resolved a lot of these conflicts in their own lives, but our politics remained stuck in this deeply polarized pattern. And that's the reason people are so frustrated. That's why people don't ever see themselves reflected in the debates. And part of the reason why I think we've done well historically is that I'm using a language that I think is more in tune with the American people, which says, I'm not going to demonize you because you disagree with me, that I don't think the Democrats have a monopoly on wisdom.”

In a conference call yesterday with reporters to announce the endorsement of New Hampshire Rep. Carol Shea Porter (D), NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan reports, Obama argued that the latest New York Times/CBS poll that found that Democrats view Senator Hillary Clinton as more electable in a general election doesn't reflect the view on the ground in the early states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.  "Generally, national polls in terms of who Democrats think are most electable still track national polls in terms of who they are planning to vote for. And we haven't seen the shift at the national level that we've seen at the local level. And when you ask the voters in those early states who are now familiar with my record, her record, other candidates records, you see a very different result," Obama said.

RICHARDSON: Per his campaign, Richardson will deliver a policy address in Sioux City, IA on “the importance of renewing our commitment to jobs and education in America.” According to excerpts, Richardson will say: “Everywhere I go, I see people working for America. But America doesn’t seem to be working for them. I can sense the insecurity out there. And it’s not just about keeping our homeland safe. It’s about keeping safe our trust that the American government is on the side of the middle class. It’s about keeping safe our belief that every American deserves a quality education -- and affirming that our country needs educated citizens if we are to stay strong.”

And: “You know, every candidate in this race is asking for the biggest job promotion of their life.  Now, if you’ve ever asked for a promotion, you know that the first question is going to be. ‘What have you done lately?’ So let’s look at what the Senate has done in the last twelve months since my colleagues took over the leadership of Congress. Did they get us out of Iraq? No. Did they scrap No Child Left Behind and reform education? No. Do million of poor children have the health insurance they need? No. Did they stop an Attorney General who wouldn’t say that waterboarding is torture? No. Have they done enough to stop this country from slipping into recession? No. Are millions of Americans worried about keeping their jobs and their homes and their quality of life? Yes. I know that we can do better. And I have done better.”

And we thought Richardson was being Mr. Nice Guy in the Dem race…

It's diet Dr. Pepper for me and I agree, the question certainly pertains to all front-runners. None are as qualified as Biden.

There is no way Diet Dr. Pepper tastes more like regular Dr. Pepper. It sounds like pandering to me. They say one thing, but they taste like another.
No one has ever lost Iowa and NH, and went on to win their parties nomination. Hillary will not be the exception. History has shown that the national polls at this time are meaningless.

Chas Michaels, Ames Iowa

History lesson here, does the name William Jefferson Clinton ring a bell? Try 1992. Now Bill didn't actively campaign in Iowa in 1992, and Hillary "is no Bill Clinton", but Bill Clinton did lose Iowa and NH and won the nomination.
INTERESTING READING! THANKS Tell Oprah ...OBAMA'S BACKGROUND CHECK !!!!!! I am surprised that you have not done your homework. We checked this out on "snopes.com". It is factual.  Check for yourself. Probable U.S. presidential candidate, Barack Hussein
Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a black MUSLIM from Nyangoma-Kogel, Kenya and Ann Dunham, a white ATHIEST from Wichita, Kansas. Obama's parents met at the University of Hawaii. When Obama was two years old, his parents divorced. His father returned to Kenya . His mother then married Lolo Soetoro, a RADICAL Muslim from Indonesia.? When Obama was 6 years old, the family relocated to Indonesia. Obama attended a MUSLIM school in Jakarta. He also spent two years in a Catholic school. Obama t akes great care to conceal the fact that he is a Muslim. He is quick to point out that, "He was once a Muslim, but that he also attended Catholic school."  Obama's political handlers are attempting to make it appear that he is no longer Muslim.  Obama's introduction to Islam came via his father, and that this influence was temporary at best. In reality, the senior Obama returned to Kenya soon after the divorce, and never again had any direct influence over his son's education.  Lolo Soetoro, the second husband of Obama's mother, Ann Dunham, introduced his stepson to Islam. Obama was enrolled in a Wahabi school in Jakarta . Wahabism is the RADICAL teaching that is followed by the Muslim terrorists who are now waging Jihad against the western world. Since it is politically expedient to be a CHRISTIAN when seeking major public office in the United States, Barack Hussein Obama has joined the United Church of Christ in an attempt to downplay his Muslim background. ALSO, keep in mind that when he was sworn into office he DID NOT use the Holy Bible, as all of our other public officials, but instead the Koran. Let us all remain alert concerning Obama's expected presidential candidacy. The Muslims have said they plan on destroying the US from the inside out, what better way to start than at the highest evel - through the President of the United States, one of their own!!!!
Jerry, that article was written in 1978.
Scott, did you know that Diet Dr. Pepper tastes more like the original?  :)

I'm glad you clarified the experience thing.  Of the top tier, Edwards clearly has the least amount of "public service" experience, if we want to term it that way.  If we restrict "public service" to mean years in office, then Hillary is has 7, Edwards had 6 and Obama has 10 (counting his time in the IL Senate).  That means between the 3 of them, they have over a decade less experience than Biden has himself.

This is, of course, assuming that years served are as important as what was accomplished during that time.  But I think Biden holds his own in that area as well.

I think Wild Cherry Pepsi is EVIL and not even in the same league as Cherry Coke, even though I think Cherry Coke is inferior to many other drinks that one might consume.

I think all candidates should be asked this question tomorrow at the debate/forum.  Do you suppose we can pull that off?
On April 13, 2005 Senator Biden voted against spending 36 million to build an additional Detention facility at Guantanamo. (Byrd Amendment 367) Senator’s Clinton, Dodd, and Obama all voted to build the additional prison in Guantanamo. In 2005 Biden called for the closing of Guantanamo, none of the other candidates (except Dennis) joined Biden in calling for the closing of Guantanamo until 2007. By that time Powell was calling for its closure. Talk about political courage!

While the "top three" candidates demonstrated toughness on Iran, Biden spoke rationally. During the MSNBC debate on April 26th  Biden said Iran represents a long-term, rather than an immediate threat.

More than once Senator’s Clinton, Edwards and Obama stated: “all military options were on the table against Iran”. On 3/2/07 Obama said Iran was “a threat to all of us.” In January, Edwards said: “Iran is serious about its threats”. In her 9/26/07 press release justifying her vote declaring Iran’s military a terrorist organization, Clinton said: “The Revolutionary Guards are deeply involved in Iran's nuclear program …”

While other candidates were talking tough, Biden repeatedly insisted intelligence shows Iran’s not on the verge of building a nuclear weapon, but is a decade away.

Biden not only voted against the ill-advised Iranian resolution, Biden was the only candidate to publicly speak out against the resolution prior to the Senate vote. Others released statements after the vote.

During the November 15th CNN debate, Biden revealed he told President Bush that if Bush takes us to war against Iran, without Congressional approval, Biden will call for his impeachment.  This was weeks before the recent NIE confirmed Iran doesn’t pose an immediate threat.

Despite Clinton, Dodd and Obama having equal access to intelligence information, only Biden appears to understand the intelligence information.

During the October 30th debate when other's took turns chastising Senator Clinton for her voting in favor of Kyl-Lieberman.

Senator Biden explained even without possibly misuse of the resolution by Bush, the resolution was wrong, because words have consequences.  Among other negative consequences Senator Biden listed was that the resolution drives moderates in Pakistan and Afghanistan underground, and puts Karzai and Musharraf in jeopardy.  Four days later instability in Pakistan worsened and Musharraf declares martial law. During the 10/30 debate only Biden connected the dots.

Two days after declaring martial law, and prior to any contact with the Bush administration, Musharraf called Senator Biden. (as Bhutto had already done) During their telephone call, Senator Biden warned Musharraf if he didn’t take off his military uniform, and hold free elections by January, as chairman of the Foreign Relations committee, he would urge the Senate to stop supplying Pakistan F-16s and P3s. Senator Biden then briefed the Deputy Secretary of State on the conversation.  Musharraf has now stepped down as head of the military, action he promised the Bush administration he would take for months, but failed to follow through with the promise until after Senator Biden warned him of the consequences.

The idea that any candidate comes close to Biden in foreign policy is a joke!

If history is any guide, then we are guaranteed a ridiculous final question. I think this one is as good as any. In fact, I wish I would have submitted this via YouTube earlier in the year. Damn. Well, there is always 2012.
dead wrong. bill clinton LOST to tom harkin in iowa in 1992 and bill clinton LOST the nh primary in 1992 to paul tsongas and still won the white house in 1992. get your history right.
Jerry/Corpus Christi Texas...
Here's an update to that very old article you linked to. In 1978, the people of Cleveland were ready to lynch Kucinich. Actually, THEY were the morons.

Joe Biden voted for the incursion into Iraq and against the Levin-Reed amendment.  For all of his experience, he did not vote against this resolution  with twenty-four much wiser senators, even after the NIE cast serious doubt on the presence of WMD.  There were others who read this report and had the wisdom and judgment to recognize this war for the lunacy that it was to be.

Then, Biden unlike twenty-three other senators, voted against Levin-Reed amendment and the rejection of this amendment ceded Congressional power for oversight, concerning the advance to war, to this moronic president.  Where's the wisdom?  Where's the judgment from experience?  (and I like Joe Biden but this kind of behavior doesn't warrant the reward of the presidency.  Need I comment on Hillary?)

Yes, I know that the overwhelming feeling of 80% of Americans, at that time, was for a rush to war, but this was a time when we needed real leadership.  Biden, Clinton and Edwards voted for this war (only Edwards has apologized and acknowledged the mistake that it was).

Barack, running for re-election to the Illinois State Senate, went against the political tide and made a stirring speech in October 2002 against the war and predicted accurately the consequences of such foolishness.  Pull up the speech on the internet, it will knock your socks off.

So, it isn't the quantity of time spent on a job, it's the intelligence and judgment that you exhibit.  This speech by Barack Obama is what first drew me to him and as time has gone on, his behavior and statements of policy have further convinced me that he has what it takes to be a great president.

Barack Obama '08-the next president of the United States of America, that's what I'm talkin' about!
In oprahbamas 1995 book he is a self proclaimed cocaine "junkie" he isn’t that old, how long ago? Is he still using? I also agree that smoking pot isn’t that bad, but cocaine is another story! Bad example for the first black candidate, guess Oprah didn’t read that either...or does she now support cocaine use? No way would we vote for cocaine using muslin to lead this great country...

Encouraged to see the groundswell for the wisest choice -- Biden. It's not too late, no matter what big media tells you.
Hmm, apparently the word "new" has been adopted by corporate whore in both parties.  Bill Clinton called his corporate party stooges "New Democrats", and Bush is a "Neo (latin for new) Conservative".  Aside from genitals, IQ score, and a national health care plan, what's the difference between "New Democrat" Hillary, and "Neo Conservative", Bush?  Neither supports peaceful solutions to global conflict, both support the prison industrial complex and the so called "war on drugs", neither supports a move from corrupt corporatocracy to a healthy democracy, neither addresses the fact that our standard of living has been declining for 30 years (including under Bill), both support the "Free Trade" deals that are the main reason our standard of living is in decline, and neither has paid more than lip service to our evaporating civil rights or declared outright opposition to all forms of torture (Hillary says she's opposed to torture as a "policy", but not that she opposes the use of torture outside policy.  Exactly the same as Bush!).  If you want someone who will continue endless imperialist wars, further entrench corporate power in politics, continue the shredding of the constitution and bill of rights, but who can do it all more efficiently then Bush, and with free medical drugs on the side, than vote for Hillary.  But, I'm voting for Kucinich.  This country needs more then free drugs, it needs a god damned revolution.
Regarding Hillary, with all the oil money she gets, she can wield some power, but haven't we had enough of that kind of corporate power?

Who is getting the most money from big oil?

Hillary Clinton is third, just behind Giuliani ans Romney.
