Oh-eight (R): Is Huck the target?

Posted: Wednesday, December 12, 2007 9:08 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under:

The Des Moines Register previews today’s debate and writes that the final debates before the Iowa caucus could have a “seismic impact.”

The Boston Globe profiles the Des Moines Register editor moderating the Iowa debates in the next two days. “David Yepsen, the Register's veteran political columnist, said yesterday that the candidates should expect a grilling by Washburn. ‘She asks tough questions and pointed questions,’ Yepsen said. ‘She doesn't mess around. She's really being diligent about this.’”

The New York Daily News writes, “What's that on Mike Huckabee's back? Looks like a political bull's-eye. The former Arkansas governor, riding a double-digit lead in Iowa polls and gaining nationally, likely will be the prime target when Republican presidential candidates meet near Des Moines this afternoon in their final debate before the first-in-the-nation caucuses Jan. 3.”

More on the debate: The format may be restrictive as the organizers are promising equal time to the point potentially cutting off candidates earlier than others in order to save time. Also, the organizers got very strict on who could participate in the Dem debate but somehow decided to let everyone in on the GOP side. How are Tancredo and Hunter any more viable than Kucinich?

A new Washington Post/ABC poll shows that Huckabee is now in a statistical tie in the national primary with Giuliani. It does beg the question: Why has every top GOP candidate, except Mitt Romney, seen a rise in the national polls during his early state boomlet?

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times does the all-the-candidates-have-moved-right-on-immigration story. Looks like Tancredo's succeeded.

HUCKABEE: Last night on Nightly News, NBC's Lisa Myers looked into Huckabee's ethics record, especially when it came to taking gifts. "There's an old saying that it's better to give than to receive," Myers said. "But as governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee seemed to like receiving -- a lot." More Myers: “All the gifts were legal. But over the years, the state ethics commission admonished Huckabee five times for failing to report gifts and for failing to report thousands he paid himself and his family from campaign funds." Watch it here.

The Los Angeles Times follows up on the report from earlier this week about how home-schoolers are rallying behind Huckabee. "Huckabee's campaign won't talk much about the home-schooling contingent, which is largely made up of conservative Christians. The staff is weary -- and wary -- of stories that make it seem as though their candidate, an ordained Southern Baptist preacher, relies exclusively on votes and volunteers from the religious right. ‘All I've heard the last week is pastors, pastors, pastors, evangelicals, evangelicals, evangelicals,’ said Eric Woolson, who runs the Iowa campaign.

"’But the buzz in political circles is that a quarter of Huckabee's Iowa volunteers are home-schoolers. ‘It might even be higher than that,’ said Danny Carroll, a campaign co-chairman for the state."

Did you realize that Huckabee's daughter is the campaign's field director? She actually has the resume to do it.

And Hall-of-famer Bob Feller, an Iowa native, endorsed Huckabee.

ROMNEY: The candidate appeared on TODAY this morning, and avoided criticizing Huckabee directly on whether he thought Huckabee was doing wink-and-a-nod criticism of Romney's religion. On the immigration TV spot against Huckabee, Romney replied, "It's not negative, it's accurate… Actually, if you agree with mike Huckabee's position, it's a positive ad for him… It's a contrast ad, not negative."

On why his numbers have fallen: "We've seen a lot of surges this campaign." Romney went on to tick off the things about Huckabee's record that he believes deserves scrutiny, including taxes, pardons, and immigration. And on Morning Joe, Romney was asked whether he thought Huckabee was using his Mormon faith against him: "I certainly hope that's not the case."

The AP gets a response from the Mormon church about Huckabee's quote in the upcoming New York Times magazine asking whether Mormons believed Jesus and Satan were brothers. "A spokeswoman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said Huckabee's question is usually raised by those who wish to smear the Mormon faith rather than clarify doctrine. ‘We believe, as other Christians believe and as Paul wrote, that God is the father of all,’ said the spokeswoman, Kim Farah. ‘That means that all beings were created by God and are his spirit children. Christ, on the other hand, was the only begotten in the flesh and we worship him as the son of God and the savior of mankind. Satan is the exact opposite of who Christ is and what he stands for.’”

“Call it Jane Swift's revenge. The former acting governor of Massachusetts, who was rather unceremoniously elbowed aside by Mitt Romney, a fellow Republican, in the 2002 governor's race, twists the knife in an opinion piece yesterday.”

Romney received the National Review’s nod yesterday. "Romney is an intelligent, articulate, and accomplished former businessman and governor. At a time when voters yearn for competence and have soured on Washington because too often the Bush administration has not demonstrated it, Romney offers proven executive skill... He still has some convincing to do with other conservatives. Romney has been plagued by the sense that his is a passionless, paint-by-the-numbers conservatism. If he is to win the nomination, he will have to show more of the kind of emotion and resolve he demonstrated in his College Station ‘Faith in America’ speech."

Some who are disappointed they didn't get the NR endorsement are reminding us of some of the personal contributions Romney made to groups affiliated with the conservative magazine.

THOMPSON: Today's Washington Post focuses its presidential profile series on Thompson and the intro on the hard copy of the front page is just brutal. Here are the teasers:
-- "He assumed it would be a walk-on part, but when he saw the script, he was reading for "Fred Thompson." "The smallest decision can lead to doors opening in your life that you never could image," he says."
-- "How he's running: Movies sometimes flop, and so, too, presidential campaigns. In Thompson's case, he let the magic moment pass."
-- "How he looks: The only message that comes through in his attires is that it is wholly perfunctory. He wears cloths so as not to be naked."
-- "How he talks: His 87-year-old mother's advice persuaded him to reject the new intelligence report that Iran has suspended its nuclear program. 'Remember whatcha mama told ya,' he says. 'If somethin' appears to be too good to be true, it probably is.' Is it possible to be too folksy? Thompson seems determined to find out."

Chuck Todd is carrying Huckabee's water.  Stop trying to push Huckabee like every other liberal.
Huck may get a free ride from some in the media but the repub machine knows how to dissect the man, he will finally get bloody, but will he stay standing or go the way of Rudy and Fred, also rans. The eastern bank crowd will put its money behind Romney, they want their party back, look out southern evangelicals they are tired of your noise and want to get back to making money, not pleasing you and the faithful anymore. Less than amonth to go, YEHAH, lets get this ball a rollin!
There is a reason Fred is doing so bad, he is just a media copy of a greater folksy american, Will Rogers.

The left leaning media has pushed Huck to soon. Now he is in the crosshairs, and they will end up having to run against one of the other canidates after all the attention shows how flawed his record is. It is entertaining that while destroying each other they would spend their positive efforts on the republican they would most like to run against.
Another MSNBC web site coverage to include the
daily constant pounding of Clinton. Criticism is
one thing but this bias in favor of Obama is
turning me away from MSNBC. Fair and equal treatment maybe too much to ask.
So the GOP race in Iowa comes down to Jesus and Satan? I'm sure in some people's minds, the Upstairs/Downstairs Economy, the endless Iraq War, and the USA's negative World Image, all rest on that. But most Americans, not to mention Iowans, would prefer a secular answer to those problems.
old Bush introducing Romney at his Texas library was telling us that Romney is the one---Rudy has too much crap in his past.Besides Romney loves Bushs wars and continues to support whatever the warmonger does.He wants to enlarge the military---what a joke ----his cowardly sons sure won't be included.I pray no republican gets in the whitehouse----or in congress.Enough is enough
Huckabee flip-flop (mine).  At first I thought Huckabee was a good guy, one that I could vote for but without enough backing to get there.  Next I saw him as a principled man with conservative social values but questionable economic values.  Now I see him as a person who has sold his soul.  The currect religion baiting being done by his campaign should be repugnant to all fair minded Americans.  It should be especially repugnant to those who have been excluded from the American Dream with a 'wink and a nod' by those who did not like their race, their gender, their religion or their economic background.  America is better than that.  I beleive that Christians are better than that and will reject the currect religion baiting.
Huckabee may resonate with the religious right, butthat's it.  Of course the media promotes him, because it will increase the odds of a Democratic win.  Thye could have given the same attention to Ron Paul, who has far broader support, but would siphon suppotr from Democrats as well as Republicans.  I left the Republican party 10 or so years ago, and am a registered independent.

Ron Paul is accused of being extreme.  He certainly has his quirks.  If elected he certainly won't get everything he wants.  But he's the only candidate that offers an antidote to our deepening morass.  All the others are debating how much lubricant to apply to the slippery slope we are on.

I challenge MSNBC and the rest of the media to give Ron Paul the coverage his degree of support deserves.  And watch out this Sunday!
It would be interesting to see a ticket that has Giuliani/Huckabee on it, with Huckabee as running as VP. I don't believe that the country as a whole can stomach just how far right his christian conservativism takes him, but perhaps his inclusion on the ticket as VP helps the republicans retain the White House?
Enough focus on the "horserace," the nation is in jeopardy.  Let's hear more about sound voices like that of Joe Biden.
I hope Romney crucifies Huckabee over these "Mormons think God and devil are brothers?" comments that Huck apparently released in an upcoming article (see drudge report..).  The whole "good ole boy" mantra is wearing thin on this kook, and I can see especially Romney, Paul, and Giuliani getting a boost from this debate as Huckabee plummets.
Wont the evangelicals be in a pickle if its Romney and Obama to choose from.  I can't wait for the outcome and I'm going to laugh all the way to the bank. A previous poster is right, the bank crowd is taking back the republican party from these church zelots, Huckabee might win Iowa but not much else, the forces behind Romney will crucify him over this letting the convicted rapist out of jail scandal.  Huck has more hidden in his closet than Lance Bass.
Hmm, I dunno. I don't see this same harsh drill down into the Democratic candidates. But being a Republican, we expect it. "The stronger the breeze, the stronger the trees".

Whenever I watch news cable news coverage of the Democratic race, I want to puke. It's a frickin' love fest. "What does Hillary need to do?" What does Obama need to do?" Can we please look honestly into each Democratic canidates past? The fundrasing from the Hillary camp sure seems suspect.

From my perspective, any bad news on any Democrat is quicly swept under the rug. Whereas, if a Republican picks his nose it's front page news.

A philandering President? Wow, where have we heard that before.

The press is doing all they can to get a Democrat elected. But hey, watch who's calling the kettle black.
Once the media gets over this overnight rise in the polls, people will actually start looking at his record (i.e. quarantine AIDS victims, give illegal immigrants scholarships, doesn't believe in evolution, yada yada yada) and he will disappear - even if he does win Iowa.

Mark my words.
Oh how cute, a battle of the yelling temperamental half-wits and the good old boy who believes the earth is only 6,000 years old. What fun!

Do the country a favor and vote blue in 08.
Listen, I'm TIRED of having to hear about ROMNEY being a Mormon, I'm TIRED of hearing about how many times RUDY's been married. It's SIMPLE, ONLY ROMNEY OR RUDY CAN BEAT A DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE, NO MATTER WHO THAT WINDS UP BEING!!!! Does anyone in this country remember the fact that WE DON'T ELECT SENATORS PRESIDENT?? The last one was JFK. You can't count FORD because he FELL INTO it. So, all you KNOW-IT-ALLS out there... LOOK FOR ROMNEY OR RUDY to be there WHEN IT COUNTS!!!
Rob, Iowa

Not sure you have actually been watching the news over the last two months, but Hillary gets pounded everyday.  The Norman Hsu fundraising story constantly drags Hillary's name into it eventhough most of the democrats received money from him.  The media just loves to go after the front runners.  Now that Huckabee and Obama are the front runners in Iowa, you can see the media starting to go after them.  You will see more and more negative stories about Obama and Huckabee over the next few weeks.  The media went after McCain, then Edwards, then Romney, then Hillary, then Guliani, and now it's Obama and Huckabee's turn. All the negative stuff about Obama and Huckabee have been out there for a while, they just refused to print it until they became frontrunners.  It's all about tearing down the person on top.  Anyone who thinks the media is for a certain candidate, they are way off base.  The media only cares about a big story and they will do anything to get it.
If you think the 'left' media is pushing Huckabee, might you consider that you are in fact politicizing the news more than the media institutions?

*I'd also bet that there's more myth than fact surrounding M. Huckabee out there, good or bad.  Thanks to both the conservative commentary and the liberal elite.

[-- "How he talks: His 87-year-old mother's advice persuaded him to reject the new intelligence report ...]  I love this, F. Thompson running for President of the United States, getting advice from his mother on policy.  I'm glad nobody cares about him.

Andrew, Mormons do believe Jesus and Satan are brothers. That there was a war in heaven, with Satan losing and leaving. The third that were with Jesus are born white, and the spirits that were fence sitters are born black. They also believe that God (the father) physically impregnated Mary (his own spirit daughter) incestously to "beget" Jesus.

Heck any mormon child can tell you this. I know because I was raised mormon, 4 years of seminary, 2 year mission, married in their temple, and finally discovered the truth and left.
WELL TO START I AM FROM HUCKABEES STATE ARKANSAS AND WHEN HE GOVERNED THIS STATE OUR STATE SUFFERED, OUR SCHOOLS SUFFERED AND WHEN HE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH DIABETES HE THOUGHT THE ENTIRE STATE SHOULD BE ON A DIET,CAN'T IMAGINE HIM CONTROLLING ANY FURTHER GOVT,LARGE OR SMALL.YOU'VE HEARD OF A SHEEP IN WOLVES CLOTHING.
As it is nearing election time, I have been reading and watching the comments made by the presidential candidates. I want to make an educated vote when the time arrives.  I am very disheartened to see that this election is turning into a religion bashing fiasco.  I was very disappointed to hear Gov. Huckabee's comments against the Mormon religion.  Though his statement was given in a derogatory tone, he was exactly right. As a practicing mormon, we do believe that Jesus Christ and Satan are brothers, sons of God. We believe that we are all children of God given free agency with the right to choose right or wrong. The choice is up to each of us how we live our lives and along with the choice comes the consequence, good or bad.
I hope that we can all make an educated decision when it comes to choosing the next president of the United States. I hope that the candidate will be chosen on their own merits and not discounted just because of their religious beliefs.
What is so threatening about Huckabee's beliefs/convictions and moral foundation? I don't see him trying to push anything on anyone... the only people trying to push their views/opinions are those who oppose his. I think he is a strong candidate based on much more than his character, which holds fast despite the constant criticism. I am for a candidate who wants to initiate change and direct this country in a positive direction. I am for a candidate who we can trust to take over in a difficult time, be open to progression in foreign and domestic affairs, help us recognize as a country what we can do to move forward and who is not afraid to speak out and take action. We need someone who is not making decisions based on "so and so did this wrong and it's time I right it"... like the democrats are doing. We all know that we are not in a place we want to be right now, a place created by many factors, and we need CHANGE and accountability to turn things around. HUCKABEE IS THE CANDIDATE WHO CAN AND WILL DO THAT!
It makes me sad that Mr. Huckabee is criticizing the LDS religion. Why don't you just stop and concentrate more on our nations problems. I hate to think that your using this to get more points....Do you believe in the Lord? What do you think he is thinking of you or anyone that criticizes anyone for any reason. My religion (LDS) has taught me to respect others no matter what there believes are. What has yours taught you? May God bless you and everyone that is with him.  I hope he lets you realize that he loves ALL of us no matter what religion we are.
I didn't read all the comments posted, but did anyone notice that this spokesperson never denied that they believe that Christ and Satan were brothers?  More importantly though, faith is an important aspect for defining who a candidate is and knowing what values will drive their decisions, but it shouldn't be the focus of the race.  Even Huckabee and Romney would both agree with that.  The media is turning this into a circus and the public will be turned off again.  Look at each of the candidates positions and make the informed decision of who you will support.  Quit looking for perfect people.  You will not find one.
On that note, GO HUCKABEE!
Good Job Steve of Boise ID.   The truth will set you free!

TW, NY, True dat. I guess myself being a conservative I view the press as being lubby-dubby over the left. Which, for the most part is true. I'm sure the vast majority of those in the major news networks are registered Democrat. And as a conservative, I welcome that challenge. But then I do find it amusing that many on the Left then complain about the "corporate media". So in a way, we come full circle. I think we both agree on the same thing, but it's the means that we disagree on.

I was at our lcoal Republican Party Christmas dinner, and one of the speakers noted that the arguments on the otherside have merit. Yes, there are some things we can agree on. The threats to Liberty is a real issues. And regarding the environment, I prefer a "market approach". Give comapnies "incentives" to comply, not punish them if they don't. It's human nature.

I am taking up the challenge from Newt Gingrich and reaching out to my left-of-center neighboors and friends. We will accomplish nothing in this country by shouting from across the street. We need to recognize our differences and work together to solve problems.
Perla,

Huckabee was not critizing the LDS religion.  He was asking a question, why are you taking it so personal?  His question about Jesus being Satan's brother is the truth. Live with it!
In defense of Huckabee:

In a statement released late Tuesday night, Huckabee's campaign said the candidate was taken out of context in the New York Times article and was not bashing the religion but instead was "illustrating his unwillingness to answer questions about Mormonism and to avoid addressing theological questions during this campaign."

Also:

"Gov. Huckabee has said consistently that he believes this campaign should center on a discussion of the important issues confronting our nation, and not focus on questions of religious belief,"

-Quoted from CNN article
Rob, Iowa...
You rock! We should all realize that drawing lines in the sand gets nothing done! We are one nation under God, whether or not you choose to recognize or worship God is your choice... nobody is saying that anyone has to worship any God a particular way, but knowing a candidate's faith is important. And knowing that as Americans we have the right to worship and proclaim our God is very important.
Don't forget that Matthew Murray was home-schooled, too.

I Have a Question

How can Jesus and Lucifer be spirit brothers when their characters and purposes are so utterly opposed?

Jess L. Christensen, Institute of Religion director at Utah State University, Logan, Utah: On first hearing, the doctrine that Lucifer and our Lord, Jesus Christ, are brothers may seem surprising to some -- especially to those unacquainted with latter-day revelations. But both the scriptures and the prophets affirm that Jesus Christ and Lucifer are indeed offspring of our Heavenly Father and, therefore, spirit brothers. Jesus Christ was with the Father from the beginning. Lucifer, too, was an angel “who was in authority in the presence of God,” a “son of the morning.” (See Isa. 14:12; D&C 76:25–27.) Both Jesus and Lucifer were strong leaders with great knowledge and influence. But as the Firstborn of the Father, Jesus was Lucifer’s older brother. (See Col. 1:15; D&C 93:21.)

Love the splits in the reprehensible party...flipper if the darling of wall street, huck is the darling of the religious radicals, rudy is the darling of the multiple sex partners crowd, mccain is the darling of the bomb bomb iran with someone else's kid crowd, freddie is the darling of the nap crowd...all in all a dismal bunch
The story about Huckabee said that he and his wife accepted more than $100,000 in gifts in one year.  It also said they used bridal registries at two stores to indicate to people what kind of gifts they would like to receive when they moved into a new mansion.  That is just sleezy!!!  I'm sorry, but Huckabee is no more than a smooth talking car salesman who the Christians will follow blindly.  It seems like Huckabee truly takes to heart the phrase "charity begins at home".

YUCK HUCK!!!
FYI for Mr. L Clinton, Chicago - President Gerald Ford was not a Senator.  He served in the House.
Oh, Richard, Richard...of Michican

Mormons are the only ones who believe in and wrote the D&C you are referencing.  Christians believe only in the Bible.  I'm afraid you don't understand that what the Mormons book D&C teach is contradictory to what the Bible has to say about Jesus and Satan. Look it up!
Kathryn in Bham (wherever Bham is)

I think the important thing to note is just as George W. believed God was on his side going in to war with Iraq, so too could Huckabee be confused into war by the little voice he pretends to hear in his head.

Read it and weep, Huck thinks God is responsible for his surge in the polls.

No one really believes this right? Have we finally been able to marginalize the religiously ignorant right?

You cannot believe that God wants you to be elected over everyone else. Does anyone else see this for what it truly is, egotistical madness?

As for your right to proclaim your God, show it to me in the constitution. You have the right to practice whatever nonsense you want (freedom of religion). You could combine that with your freedom of speech, but simply because you have the right to proclaim your God (THAT TALKS TO YOU WHICH IS TECHNICALLY THE DEFINITION OF CRAZY IF YOU REALLY HEAR HIM), that does not mean that the rest of the grown-ups who aren't compelled by your sheepish group think have to take you seriously. Religious fundamentalists such as yourself are nutbags.

Keep your mouth shut for a while and let the adults with their crazy ideas about reality try to govern America out of the mess you have created for us all.

For the record your fundamentalist Christian values are not American values. The American values were put forth by our forefathers who were deists and did not believe in a personal God.

Awwwww, sorry, you are an evolutionary aberration, and have nothing to do with American values.

Have a nice day.
Raised taxes?
Loves Illegals?
freed a man to kill again?
Has a thing about AIDS?

What makes you think he is a target?
As a member of the Great Right Wing Smear Machine, Sane in UT, continues to look through a Conspiracy Paradigm at the world. The "Left Leaning Media" would murder their own mothers for a scoop and a pay raise. And of course, all the "Left Leaning Media" is owned by Billionaire Republicans except for Ted Turner. Grow up.
I'm glad they are labeling Clinton as the under dog.  If she LOOKS like she's struggling then maybe they'll stock attacking her long enough to take down each other.  She's still WAY ahead in the national polls.  I back Hillary but hey, if Barack won the nomination I wouldn't be too upset about it.  I think he, Clinton, Edwards or Biden would be a 100% improvement over the current administration and a better choice for American than ANY of the Republican candidates.  They are so pigeon holed.

Romeny- Big Business President
McCain- War President
Huckabee-Religious President (we've had enough of this hypocracy)
Guiliani- Status Quo!!!
First of all, A, my friends and I all used registries for house warming parties as we have bought our first homes or upgrades, etc... so that is not sleezy. It is actually very common! And I do not follow Huckabee blindly. I have been very open minded to both the red and blue sides of this upcoming race. I would love to have a woman as president - even grew up claiming to someday be the first woman president myself. I also think that Barack has many excellent attributes and would bring a much needed different perspective to the White House. However, when it comes down to the issues and what each candidate wants to do with the next 4 or 8 years as president, Huckabee has a good plan and is motivated by the desire for a positive change. He does not come from a place of divisiveness or condemnation. I do not think that all of the things that Hilary or Barack want to do can be done, not all at the same time in the next 8 years. I think we need someone who recognizes where we are and where we need to be.
It's funny that the article hasn't even come out yet, yet people are critisizing it.  I'm willing to bet that Huckabee didn't critisize the LDS at all.  Also, if you really want to see whose religion is being critisized look at HUCKABEE!  He has been taken critisism for his believes for months now!  Even some people on this board are critisizing his beliefs while they are critisizing him for supposedly critisizing others beliefs.  You guys are ridiculous.  Don't believe everything you read.

By the way, I to am from Arkansas and thought Mike Huckabee did an excellent job.  He left us with a 800 million dollar surplus, he made our education better, and helped to lower crime, divorce rates, and obesity.
GO HUCK!!!!  If not, Go Romney!!  If all else fails, PLEASE NOT Hillary!
Leonard Clinton: just a slight clarification.  President Ford was in the House not the Senate, and he wasn't elected to the job anyway, he was appointed by Nixon. Your overall point is correct, that we've not elected an active senator for president since Kennedy in 1960.  However, to say that we WON'T elect one I think is a misstatement.  What office, if any, currently held by the candidates I dont think factors into peoples decisions about who they vote for.
To Rick...
I thought I was the only one enjoying it. It's like watching the end of a bad play where all of the characters slide into their one-dimensional, final role. They all sit on the stage, at times, flabbergasted to be in each others prescence.

They're all poorly drawn charicatures of what the greedy wall street type think that the Red neck Relgious nuts would want them to look like.

And now for a redneck coloquialism: None of these old dogs will hunt anymore.

Dems have the presidency for at least 8 years and I'm 90% sure that they'll have it for 16 so long as they run the right ticket in this election. Can you imagine how much better and different the country will be after 16 years of democrats in power?

I can't wait. Obstructionists, cry yourself to sleep. We are going to become the best country in the world again.

-Health care not just for the poor, but for every citizen because we are ALL CREATED EQUAL.
-Energy independence, caps on carbon emissions, and the development of an all electric car.
-Social Security--saved
-Jobs brought back to America
-Wars--fought when we are attacked by a nation

There's so much to do. At least the choice is easy since one of the parties has shown blatantly that they are unable to do the nations work.
Kathryn in Bham, what I fear is that we are approaching a point where a President must pass a religious litmus test to become President. I felt that Rommney was forced to "defend" his religion. As I've read, Kennedy's speech in 1960 was in response to direct allegations that we would be an arm of the Vatican. Romneys speech however, appeared to be that he was defending his faith. I'm a Catholic, it would be like my defending why we pray to the Mother Mary.

We are a secular country, however, with spiritual roots. The Founders understood that. That is why we have the 1st Amendment:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

What this means is "hands off". The people shall be allowed to do whatever they want, whenever they want, regarding faith and religion.

I'm a christian first and a conservative second, hence a conservative Christian. With conservative being the adjective describing the noun, Christian. But I would vote for Marylyn Manson if he/she would defend the 1st Amendment and defend my right to pray wherever, and whenever I choose.

IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT WE KEEP CHURCHES, ONE OF THE GREATEST PRIVATE INSTIUTIONS IN THIS COUNTRY FAR FROM THE "HANDCUFFS" OF GOVERNMENT. BECAUSE IF OUR GOVERNMENT STARTS TO "HANDOUT" MONEY TO CHURCHES, WHAT FOLLOW ARE "HANDCUFFS".

Inititally, I favored Bush's "Faith Based Initiative" because it "seemed" like a good idea. But with the reading I've done, I now disagree.

"WITH HANDOUTS, FOLLOW HANDCUFFS"
Desperate -
You are just that! You want to know what the heartland of America thinks... the majority of this country backed Bush when going in to war based on the same intelligence he had in making his decision. Not all of his decisions have been right (fair to say about ANYONE!), but we are now in this war and have to deal with the fact that the majority of the country backed it from the beginning.

Furthermore, you would like to address the forefathers of our country. This country was based on the right to worship freely - the reason our founders left Europe in the first place! This is a dose of what we were founded on:
John Adams and John Hancock:
We Recognize No Sovereign but God, and no King but Jesus! [April 18, 1775]

John Adams:
“ The general principles upon which the Fathers achieved independence were the general principals of Christianity… I will avow that I believed and now believe that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God.”
• “[July 4th] ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.”
–John Adams in a letter written to Abigail on the day the Declaration was approved by Congress

“It cannot be emphasized too clearly and too often that this nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religion, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason, peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.” [May 1765 Speech to the House of Burgesses]

“The Bible is worth all other books which have ever been printed.”

Media lesson one:

Good publicity about any candidate follows bad publicity over any candidate.  It's like Survivor.  You don't want to be the guy or gall who is too vocal (i.e. too covered by the media) or your gonna get voted off (taken down by the media).  The only story better than a happy story is a happy story turned to horror.
