Romney’s (almost) Dean Scream speech

Posted: Thursday, December 13, 2007 10:18 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Erin McPike
If anything is certain about the GOP presidential primary, it’s that Romney really, really wants to win Iowa. Desperately.

After hitting a post-debate party around Des Moines on Wednesday, he flew to Cedar Rapids for a Christmas/Romney rally at the Linnmar High School cafeteria, because Iowa spokesman Tim Albrecht said the campaign figured all of the other candidates would stay in Des Moines for more post-debate schedules. Giuliani’s team, however, seemed to have the same thought and scheduled an event in the same area at the same time.

Former Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad’s son, Marcus, said there were about 900 supporters there as he opened the event -- loudly -- and was almost reminiscent of Howard Dean’s scream speech nearly four years ago.

Funny enough, when Romney was wrapping up his remarks, he said the following: “You're going to do something which people don’t expect, which is give me a victory. And then I’m going to New Hampshire, where I’m pretty solidly in the lead in New Hampshire, and then I’m going to be in Nevada, and I’m going to win Nevada, and then I’m going to be in Wyoming, and I’ll win that one, and then Michigan, and we’re going to end up doing real darn well. That’s at least what I plan. Brian over here was afraid I was going to scream as I was saying that -- the Howard Dean moment, but I’m not doing that. No predictions like that, no screaming allowed…. I’m going to find you, track you down, make sure you vote in the caucuses.”

Shortly after, as Mrs. Romney tried to nudge him, he said, “Ann’s pulling me off the stage, I can tell.”

Toward the end of his remarks, he teetered on the line of closing the deal and -- begging.

“And now I need you guys,” he said, launching into his conclusion. “I need you on one day to give one hour. On one day I need you to go out on Jan. 3rd. And I know there’s going to be the Orange Bowl on, I mean, who wants to get away from the Orange Bowl? There’s going to be the Orange Bowl.

“I predict bad weather -- this is, after all, Iowa, in January. And I predict bad weather and good TV, but I need you to go out on Jan. 3rd in the evening, and I need you to do something else, which is to find -- this is really tough. Can you find one other person to go with you that can vote? Maybe someone whose arm you can twist, and maybe get more than one, get two, three, four, five people to go with you and say, ‘Can you come with me? Because Iowa has a lot to say about the direction of the country.

“You’re first. Your voice is heard. We’re counting on you. I’m counting on you. Even if you think there’s somebody else better than me, come out and vote. But just vote once for him. If you like me, vote many, many times. I need your help, I need your work.”

He teetered on the line of begging?  I think he crossed it.  This does not make him look like he is coming from a position of strength...which I suppose he isn't anymore if the polls are any indication.
If he weren't rich he'd make a great squeegee guy at an off ramp. :-)
Drug test all politicians.
Is he encouraging voter fraud or do Iowans have a special privilege to vote more than once?  “Even if you think there’s somebody else better than me, come out and vote. But just vote once for him. If you like me, vote many, many times. I need your help, I need your work.”.
He is probably a dead lock to win Nevada and if it manners, later Utah.
Yep this speech does remind me of the Dean speech.
Track you down?????
That is desperate.
The man has great ideas and great energy!
sounds to me like he's working for votes on the grassroots level.  good for him.

maybe fred thompson should try it and get out of the cozy bus.

there's a story here?

must be a slow news day in McPike-ville.
Sara,
Here are his great ideas:
. Socialized medicine
. Subsidized Ethanol
. Continued War in Iraq
. National ID card

Not my guy.  Guess who?  Dr. Love.
Good ol' Flipper.
A third NH poll in 24 hours has Romney running very strong, with McCain clearly emerging as second. Huckabee fails to surge -- and gives credence to the new most likely scenario if his winning in IA but Romney holding on to NH. Link to poll: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2007/12/presidential-polls-romney-shows-no-sign.html
It's so easy to change the meaning of a message just by removing the voice inflection, the chuckles, and the laughter. Mitt was trying to reinforce the idea that Iowans need to get out and vote, and a little humour is always appreciated.
Since everybody accuses Romney of buying all his support, why does he need to do old fashioned retail politiking?
He is asking for votes?  What has politics come too?
By the way folks, the line at the end was joke.
BYAHHHHHHHH!
You should of heard Joe Scarmymindboro this morning he did one for Obama his canadate for president,he was like he wins in IOWA then takes NEW HAMPSHIRE then South Caralina then on to michigan .The only thing he left out, as he was frothing at the mouth for his favorite democrat whos stance on issues he supports i guess, was WHHHHHHOOOOOOOOO
Don't overread it.  Guy had a long day.  He seems very electable, and is certainly one of the top choices to consider for the Republican ticket.  I liked Romney in the debate in Iowa, although I also like Huckabee.
His supporters voted for him 20-80 times each in the St. Petersburg, FL, straw poll, under the direction of his son who was handing out stacks of tickets that other candidates supporters bought at $20 a person. I don't see any reason he wouldn't encourage his supporters to commit voter fraud in the primaries if they can get away with it the way they did in Florida.
Only one good comment on this posting board other than mine; he's campaining people, you're supposed to bolster the troops, rally the lines, and get people excited!!! He does that, he's a crowd please and an excellent speaker; not only does he do it well, he practices what he preaches. Rock on Mitt, you'll make a fantabulous president!!
I agree Sara, and he's smarter than all the others put together.  How long has it been since we had someone in the White House who had half a brain?
I will be there for you.
This flaming idiot will say anything and I do mean anything to get elected.  If he was Pinocchio his nose would be long enough to cover the entire country.  Matter of fact most would fall under that category as well.  This idiot loves only one thing himself.  I love his add about a child should come after marriage -- what inflaming remarks--I guess to him every child born out of wedlock is a bastard child--again more divisional comments from the party the has divided this country beyond belief.  The dunce in chief has claimed that he was a uniter not a divider but in reality he is the complete opposite--he did not even denounce until it became a serious issue that people like myself are unpatriotic because I (we) do not support his policies of destroying our good name and our Constitution.  I have played a game for real called WAR and if I had to I wiould have died for my country-----in my book you can not get any more PATRIOTIC than that.  It is time that the repuk party stop this we are better than them crap.  Thompson's add includes that he was instrumental in putting a democratic governor in jail---do I care which party that governor was from?  Hell no, if anyone does a crime they must do the time----unlike the dunce in chief and his claim about the person(s) involved with the outing of a CIA operative---baseless claims and the pattern proves that this administration does not give a damn about this country other than their own personal agenda.
LOVE Romney... He is CLEARLY the best candidate and someone that this country NEEDS.  So stop listening to your scary pastor's lies and be more concerned about the future of this nation!

I wont let you insult him,Reagun had half a brain
It seems buying Republican votes isn't as easy as it used to be.
Iowa does vote more than once. To win, you have to get a certain percentage of the vote. After the first vote, they cut out the lower tier and vote again, and cut, and vote again until the percentage is met. So, what he is saying is go ahead and vote for a Ron Paul or Tancredo on the first ballot, but then vote for me...
If Romney gets the nod. I will refrain from voting in the general. I want these extremist nuts out of the GOP leadership. Who the hell wants a president obsessed with other people's sex lives and believes that the government must enforce someone's particular church viewpoint? Bring back my old GOP minus the nuts please
This guy was the Used Car Salesman Candidate of the Primaries, for either party....but he just degraded into a pan handler.  All he has to do now is start refering to himself in the 3rd person and we can institutionalize him!
This is news???????  What a waste of the authors and readers time.
http://www.bible-truth.org/jesusbro.htm
check out what Romney realy believes, and you will find out how he really is a minipulating lier
I thought Iowans expected groveling.
Not as easy as buying Dem votes betty. That just takes free healthcre for all, free houses for all, social security that goes out of control, and 5000 bonds for everyone.

I guess the big difference is Mitt is spending his money; Obama and Hillary are spending MINE>
Yes, the Mormons do believe that the Devil is the younger brother of Jesus.  This is part of their theology.  No one is denying this.  This, in addition, to the almost scream, will do Romney in with evangelicals.
Pretty low standards...half a brain is much better than the brainless boob occupying the WH right now I guess
I keep hearing Romney won't win becasuse people want a candidate who seems more "approachable" or more like a regular guy and someone who won't flip-flop because of some polls.  I guess that's why we have the "fool me once...??? duh..." guy in office who won't take a hint from the polls and get us the hell out of Iraq!  We get who we deserve.
What's wrong with asking folks for their vote? Who would go to a job interview and not ask for the position?

(BTW, Marilyn from WI, would it "Christian" to deny someone a job based on their beliefs, however much we may disagree with them? What is this nation coming to.)
Sorry, Romney, I just can't get passed his fundamental religious beliefs....that was are equal to God and are Gods ourselves and that Jesus was just a profit, had family and children.  At least that is what I have read and heard about Mormonism.
I think people need to REALLY look at his religion.  I know, I know, it shouldn't matter.  When it is a Mormon that wants to be our president that is when I come to a screeching halt.  I can't believe that all anyone is talking about is the fact that they believe the devil is Jesus' brother.  What about the part in the Book of Mormon when Joseph Smith is visited by an angel and is told that all people with dark skin are marked by God as sinners?  What about the part when they talk about a second coming of Christ in America?  I don't care in any manner how much energy brains, or money this man has...there is NO WAY someone who believes these kinds of things should be the leader of the free world.  (I don't think he should even be a politician.) How can he work for people he believes have been "marked by God"? Get out your books or computers and start reading about what this man believes before you decide to vote for him!!

Adriana, what you have read and heard is very wrong. Please go to www.Mormon.org and see what we really believe.
GO ROMNEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Huckachuck is loser and a half in the general!
The misleading and misinformed comments relating to specific doctrines of Mormonism are born out of bigotry and ignorance, beside the fact that they have no place in a political discussion.  If you want to discuss religion, particularly LDS beliefs, I suggest http://www.mormonapologetics.org
then adriana you are wrong, you read garbage.
He's such an f-in slimeball. I hope he gets mauled by Irish Setters.
These Mormon apologists really do take the cake. Yes, you DO believe in the brotherhood of Jesus and Satan. Yes, you do believe that Mormons in good standing do get their own planet. Yes, you do believe that YHWH has a body and that he is one among many gods in a pantheon of Bronze Age gods. YOU DO BELIEVE THESE THINGS! YOu also believe that it's OK to lie in order to protect THE CHURCH.
It's OK by me what you believe. Just have the stones to stand by them.
Just like a salesman - trying to close the deal. And please don't compare this huckster with Howard Dean.  Also - the Dean 'scream' was grossly over-exaggerated by the right wing echo chamber. There is nothing wrong with a candiate showing some emotion or enthusiasm.
Adriana,
next time you see our missionaries (white shirts, ties, on bikes) out in your neighborhood, really you should invite them in for a chat. Your information is pretty much all wrong. I grew up believing all that too, until I let them actually share with me what they believed firsthand.
Mitt 2008 for this all the way.
Huckabee is unrealistic if he thinks he can get the country to rally around him. Even if he did manage to win so many skeletons would start coming out of his closet that the press would shove him into the ground leaving Obama or Hillary to win. Romney is the Only candidate who has a chance of even uniting the republican party. National Review believes it and many americans believe it. If Romney wins it will be a good day for Republicans.
To all the Iowans out there, just take a look at Romney and Huckabee, take a look at their accomplishments, take a look at their Governorships. If you can do this you'll know with out a doubt that Romney has the traits needed in the White House, and like he said he needs your vote to make it happen. You guys are the key, you can change the future if you give Romney what he needs to heal this country.
Steve Gleaton:

Gosh, I didn't know the right wing echo chamber had control of YouTube, YouTube, YouTube . . .

I thought the left wing echo chamber had control with Macaca, Macaca, Macaca . . .

Thanks for enlightening me, me, me . . .

Yahhhgghhh, Yahhhgghhh, Yahhhgghhh ! ! ! . . .
LOL...I like Mittens, but that was just funny!
I love how christians are making fun of Romney's religion.  Any idea how ridiculous your religious ideas sound to every non-christian in America?  Virgin birth, theres a good one.
