Clinton apologizes to Obama

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
Clinton New Hampshire spokeswoman Kathleen Strand says Clinton has apologized to Obama personally for Bill Shaheen's comments that Obama's past drug use could be used against him by Republicans in a general election:

"Sen. Clinton personally apologized to Sen. Obama this morning, and reiterated that this was not anything that came from the campaign or that we condone."

At an Obama camp presser in New Hampshire, essentially, they said Billy Shaheen's comment was part a pattern of remarks coming from the campaign, and that negative attacks won't stand.

At this time, the Clinton campaign says it isn't planning any response to the Obama event, but that could change. And, Shaheen, the campaign says, will be unavailable for comment.

*** UPDATE *** State Senator Martha Fuller Clark, Obama NH co-chair was asked if he wants to see further action from the Clinton camp, including possibly removing Shaheen: "We’re calling upon the Clinton campaign to return to discussing the real issues that are important to the voters of New Hampshire. That’s what we want the campaign to do. We want them to have a positive campaign here in New Hampshire, not negative attacks."

Former NH Dem chair Ned Helms, an Obama NH co-chair, was asked if he accepted the Clinton camp's claim that this was an unauthorized quote and not condoned by the camp: "We heard that a week or so ago out in Iowa with the first person who was sending out emails. Then we heard it again last week in Iowa. And I think that’s the same explanation we heard this week.

"I suppose you could say, well the first time, that’s just what happened and it’s too bad. And then the second time that happened. But when you see a pattern of people making statements, and then there’s the follow up statement that, ‘Oh that wasn’t authorized,’ it doesn’t take a genius to see that there’s a thread going on here. And what Martha and I are saying is, how many times are we gonna see the isolated incident followed by the denial before we just simply say would you please stop? Let’s get back to the campaign."

Clinton the  Desperado!!!!!

Apology alone won't do; it is a pattern we've seen in the last three weeks

First, they apologize for spreading rumor about Madrasa

Second, Howard Wolfson apologized for going after his kindergarten essay

Third, Hillary Clinton apologized for calling him a drug dealer.

Folks, do you see a pattern here?

Vote for change come 2008. Obama all the way baby.

Clinton just cost another democrats a senate seat in NH. I was going to campaign aggressively for shaheen's wife in 2008 but i won't even border come November 2008.
Here's something I read on MSNBC's First Read:

"... one day before Shaheen's comments, Tom Edsall wrote a piece claiming the Clinton camp was quietly talking up the drug story."

Team Clinton has been saying they didn't have anything to do with it - yeah, right.
I should believe anything she says, WHY......
So how many anti-Obama actions is Hillary going to apologize for? This is approaching pathetic. Last week it was the Iowa county chair volunteer. This week it's a seasoned politician in New Hampshire stooping to a regrettable low. What a joke.
Did the girl hurt your feelings?AWE SHUCKS thats not fair.I can only mention my drug use and only for my benifit. Is he a supporter of legal cannabis ,does he support RUSH LIMBAUGH and his lack laws on drug abuse .Its alright he wont have to explain lets just blame hilliary.
Clinton as Sergeant Shultz "I know nothing".  Boy, does she ever!
If I was Hillary, I wouldn't have apologized.
What her staffer said was/is true.
Obama's addmitted cocaine use would definitely come back to bite him in the rear-end during a general election/campaign.
For as stupid as George Bush is, even he was smart enough in 2000 to avoid admitting to the use 'coke.' This is where Obama's inexperience and naivety shows the most.
Senator Clinton has to apologize for something--Governor Huckabee has to apologize for something---Governor Romney is screaming------and not a single vote has yet been cast! This is crazy!

I suggest all the candidates take a break over the holidays to relax, refocus, regroup and put things back in proper perspective. Then, start over again after Christmas--hopefully campaigning on serious issues.
Thank you, Senator Clinton. Now that it's taken care of, I hope it goes away. I'm not going to hold my breath though.
fire him just liked you fired the volunteers who (on their own of course) smeared Obama on issues of faith.

good job clintonistas -- you have hit him on his childhood, faith and now the slimiest move of all....disgusting.
Dirty fight's will not stand this time, Hillary. I was all in for you but the more I hear and learn about Obama, the more I like him. We need a new direction, and we need it now, more than ever. I stand for Obama 08 cause he'll stand for the people.
Glad to hear it.  And Republicans have no business using it against Obama considering the current Commander in Chief admits to "youthful indiscretions" that lasted until he was 50.  Guess I still have a few years left in which it's acceptable to misbehave.  Too bad I gave it up when I was half that age.
I think Iowa is going to just give Hillary Clinton a spanking on Jan 3rd! Behind the scenes (and in front of them) they have thrown the book at Obama for months. Trying to smear him with allegations on everything from having a slush fund, to his past (already admitted) drug use, to trying to paint him as a Muslim plant. And this started long before he really began to climb the polls.

Hillary's problem is that all these revelations about her dirty campaign are in full view of Iowans and I think she's going to get a rude awakening on Jan 3rd.

The only way Iowans are going to get this Clinton to GO AWAY is to NOT vote for her.

Obama 2008

Sen. Clinton's staff playing good cop/bad cop. It's so transparent: put a staffer up to something underhanded, then deny it.

THis is the way these people have played ball all the way along. It's not a surprise that Obama is moving up. I wonder if Edwards can also capitalize on this.

Too bad Biden is so balnd. He's the best of the lot on that side.
real class, come out come out where ever you are . If she realy is sorry about the statment then let him talk to the press about his intensions or fire him . Cant have it both ways .
RUBBISH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Attack and apologize, after the septic tank has already been emptied.

No one needs her apology. It's as useless as a corpse. Shaheen should stand down at the least, if Clinton still wants our respect, and perhaps our vote.

Now we know why people hate her so much.

The Clinton campaign wants to make sure that if Hillary is going down, she should take Democrats' best chance with her. How pitiful!

"Cute trick"/Say something harmful about Obama, and then the boss apologizes. Maybe Obama could "accidently" say something about how Hillary is so mean and nasty to all "servants" including Secret Agents and Hotel Employees.

Ahhhhhhh.....

Considering she is losing, she had better do a song and dance as well.....
Hillary Clinton: "I'm sorry Barack (wink wink)"

yeah right.....They need to fire Mark Penn, and let Bill run this ship to stand a chance of stopping the fast-gaining Obama freight train.
I'm glad Obama is keeping the fundraiser, hillary has to learn that when you attack a fellow democrat you have to pay for it, she even said it's fun to attack obama, i'm glad she said sorry, but she has to learn there are consistences for her campains actions
Ooops!!! HRC has taken a page from the Huckabee book. But to me, it looks like damage has been done (via self-inflicted wound).

My question for the press: Is Obama really this clean? Are you guys giving him a free pass?

As an Obama supporter, I would much rather have the dirt come out now, in the primary, than in the GE. And your generally positive coverage of him might actually hurt him down the road. But, i will take the press (and HRC oppo) at their word, and assume Obama is as crystal clean as he says he is.

And if that is the case, there should be no stopping him to the White House, aside from Republicans running a racist campaign. However, I assume that will be rather difficult for them to do, since other big media names have been taken down for racist comments (see: Imus) in the past, that is as long as they do not work for FauxNews.

Cheers!
It was a delibrate attack that was championed by the Clinotn camp. It is also a pattern that has been going on for a long time. I also think it is racist in my view.

Moreso, just because she called an apologise does not mean a thing. That thought has already been sown into peoples heads.

If the Obama camp didnt have a strong respionse to it, if the media didn't say it was over the top, then no apology would have been given.

Think of it this way. If she was truely sorry about it, she would have condemed the statement even before the Obama camp responded

It is a shame on in my view. Even if she wins the nomination i cannot vote for her and i believe many Democrats will not.
I wrote the following letter to the editor that was printed yesterday in the Rocky Mountain News and was the featured letter in the Denver Post online letter section.

Editor:
Hillary Clinton chose to attack Barack Obama by mocking his kindergarten dream to be president one day.  Mrs. Clinton managed to insult every voter all at once because who among us didn't have childhood dreams?  Whether to be an astronaut, teacher, or even president of the United States the chance to realize our dreams is something that defines America.  Mrs. Clinton, who previously insulted just all male voters, is proving to be a poor campaigner who is ultimately unelectable.

Now we can add their own version of push polling. Clinton is desparate.  Obama will win in Iowa and the rest of the dominos will fall.
Obama/Webb '08
Seems like the Clinton camp has to apologies and fire someone twice a week and claim that some action taken by a staffer was not condoned by HRC. The lack of ability to run that orginization does not make her look ready to run the country.
What bugs me the most is that on all the morning shows are acting like this is some type accident from her campaign but it's obvious that over the last 3-4 weeks that they have been throwing things against the wall to see if anything sticks. Whether it's claiming he's a Muslim, the slush fund rumor, or this latest one. It's obvious and she's running a George Bush type campaign. I just hope the people of Iowa don't fall for this crap.
Her apology doesn't mean squat unless she fires Billy Shaheen.
"President Obama, I am really sorry that this strategy backfired on me. I very much regret sending Shaheen out to try to do a hatchet job on you using republican tactics."

It's too late. She's essentially apologizing for this not working. No, I wouldn't even go that far, an apology was probably part of the strategy from the start.

I was just pro-Obama and not anti-Hillary until the voter suppression story and then this broke. Now she is so indelibly associated with this sleaze her face irritates me on TV.
This nasty stuff from Clinton's underlings is a very poor reflection on what her administration might look like.

I have nothing against this fine junior Senator from New York and I think she is a smart and competent politician.  My judgment is simply that Barack Hussein Obama is a better candidate to lead our country.

I trust that he will ask for the advice of Joe Biden, Chuck Hagel, Chris Dodd, John McCain, Bill Richardson, Mario Cuomo, Wesley Clark, Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich, etc. for their advice and opinions as well as those of the brilliant people he will bring into his administration and then use his informed judgment and his own experience in constitutional law and understanding of real people to make the decisions that will be very good for America and the world.

Let's see someone else come up with a sentence that long.
I don't think anyone in Clinton's campaign should go that route! Back off and talk about something we are truly concerned with.
Hillary apologized after polls showed most Americans believe she should apologize.
Hillary apologized after polls showed most Americans believe she should apologize.
What's new..... Obama is faced with the facts, and thoughts a tizzy fit
It's a little late - as always - for the Clinton campaign to "apologize" for actions that supposedly aren't condoned by the campaign.  Say - do - anything, then distance yourself from it.  That's the Clinton way.
Obama walks on water, news at 11:00...
The Clinton campaign is so obvious it's nauseating.
Obama has gotten off easy.  It is if he is teflon.   I want to know more about him.  I want to know more about his old friend - the ex con who now lives in a car, I want to know about his drug use, those suspicious looking stock purchases, the whole nine yards.

Obama wants to be President of the United States.   We have to vet this guy.  Why did he change the names of his friends and associates in his book, and why is he hesisitant to talk more about his past, except on his own term, as in his book.

Who is Barack Hussein Obama?

The media should do its job, stop fawning over this pol, and ask him some tough questions for a change.
Did anyone ask Bill Clinton, Al Gore,John Kerry or George Bush if they SOLD drugs....Oh is it only black youths that try drugs who must be a seller also?  This is why I will NEVER vote for this piece of "White Trash"
Dirty fight's will not stand this time, Hillary. I was all in for you but the more I hear and learn about Obama, the more I like him. We need a new direction, and we need it now more than ever. I stand for Obama 08 cause he'll stand for the people.

The overnight internal poll numbers must have come in this morning bad.  I thought Hillary wasn't allowed to apologize, like for her Iraq war vote.
She needs to fire this racist clown! So do you se now African americans what the Clinton campaign really thinks about Obama and probably black men in general! I'm for Obama all the way!
Apology not accepted.
THIS IS SHAMFUL AND DIGUISTING.  HOW IN THE WORLD CAN THIS WOMAN BE THE LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD!!!  IF SHE DIDN,T MAKE THE REMARKS, PEOPLE IN HER CAMP DID AND SHE IS THE LEADER OF HER CAMPAIGN.  THIS  METHOD OF SMEARING PEOPLE MUST STOP!!!  IAM A OBAMA SUPPORTER BUT I WAS PROUD TO HAVE A WOMAN RUNNING FOR THE HIGHEST OFFICE IN THE LAND, BUT SHE AND HER HUSBAN DISGUST ME AT THIS POINT.  THIS IS WHY PRESIDENT OBAMA STATES THERE NEEDS TO BE A CHANGE IN THE WAY POLITICS IN THIS COUNTRY IS.
Give me a break. Her Iowa campaign has been doing this crap since at least March. If Clinton isn't aware of all the sleazy things her campaign is doing in Iowa, it's time she woke up. However, I can't imagine she isn't fully aware.
Apology?  PUH-LEEEEZE! She knows she needs to turn her nastiness around and THAT's why she's apologizing - so she can appear sincere...Intelligent people will not be fooled by her...She is the only thing that is transparent in government right now - we can all see right through her!!!

Anyone else see a pattern?

-Clinton campaign surrogates plant smears
-Clinton campaign waits for media's reaction
-Media says actions look "desperate"
-Clinton campaign claims they had nothing to do with it and condemns "dirty tricks"

The Clinton Camp is shameless, and her apology is worthless
Good grief! How stupid does the Clinton campaign think we are? Do they really think it is believable that neither Hillary nor Bill knew anything about this latest smear tactic? Puhleeez! This is becoming almost laughable - although it is also very, very, sad that a campaign that sees itself spiraling downward toward defeat would resort to such "Nixonian" tactics. Shame on the Clinton campaign.
For all it's worth, Clinton gets more bad news in New Jersey where she doesn't even muster a lead against Giuliani in a must-win state for Dems: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2007/12/presidential-polls-romney-shows-no-sign.html
