Clinton apologizes to Obama

Posted: Thursday, December 13, 2007 11:26 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
Clinton New Hampshire spokeswoman Kathleen Strand says Clinton has apologized to Obama personally for Bill Shaheen's comments that Obama's past drug use could be used against him by Republicans in a general election:

"Sen. Clinton personally apologized to Sen. Obama this morning, and reiterated that this was not anything that came from the campaign or that we condone."

At an Obama camp presser in New Hampshire, essentially, they said Billy Shaheen's comment was part a pattern of remarks coming from the campaign, and that negative attacks won't stand.

At this time, the Clinton campaign says it isn't planning any response to the Obama event, but that could change. And, Shaheen, the campaign says, will be unavailable for comment.

*** UPDATE *** State Senator Martha Fuller Clark, Obama NH co-chair was asked if he wants to see further action from the Clinton camp, including possibly removing Shaheen: "We’re calling upon the Clinton campaign to return to discussing the real issues that are important to the voters of New Hampshire. That’s what we want the campaign to do. We want them to have a positive campaign here in New Hampshire, not negative attacks."

Former NH Dem chair Ned Helms, an Obama NH co-chair, was asked if he accepted the Clinton camp's claim that this was an unauthorized quote and not condoned by the camp: "We heard that a week or so ago out in Iowa with the first person who was sending out emails. Then we heard it again last week in Iowa. And I think that’s the same explanation we heard this week.

"I suppose you could say, well the first time, that’s just what happened and it’s too bad. And then the second time that happened. But when you see a pattern of people making statements, and then there’s the follow up statement that, ‘Oh that wasn’t authorized,’ it doesn’t take a genius to see that there’s a thread going on here. And what Martha and I are saying is, how many times are we gonna see the isolated incident followed by the denial before we just simply say would you please stop? Let’s get back to the campaign."

Can someone explain what a lot of ppl mean when they say Obama or even Clinton doesn't have enough experience?  To me it seems that every president picks his cabinet members for thier experience and know how of a particular thing, that they will brief him and he makes his best judgement off of that. so how much experience does it take to accomplish getting the very best cabinet members?  Bush did not know everything about every subject he has ppl to inform him and he makes policy based of of the ppl around him.

I think this is just a way to stonewall the ppl into thinking that the one person has to know everything when that is not the case EVER!!!
LOL Diamond..."It's as useless as a corpse"...I don't think I've ever heard that phrase before
Take away all the attacks and shallow speech, what has left ?
http://theleftcoaster.com/archives/011500.php

What's silly is that the Obama campaign is now using this as a fundraiser. On the surface this seems smart (play the victim card, show Hillary to be playing dirty, etc., etc.). But does the Obama campaign really want to keep the fact that Obama was a cocaine user (a heavy user) in the news cycle for another go around? I think, ultimately, this will hurt Obama more than Hillary (who has PERSONALLY apologized for something that someone in her campaign did -- apology? That rarely happens in any campaign).
ATTACK ATTACK yea its an attack its politics .CANT TAKE THE HEAT OUT OF THE KITCHEN WIMPY WIMPY WIMPY PROTECT THE FRAGILE OBAMA,I like his ideas on drugs we should hear more ,might not look too good in the general election but as democrats who cares you dont expect to win anyway so throw it away.PS I dont need the Clinton Camp or any other camp telling me what to say thats freedom of speech.
Let's keep the campaign focused on the issues!

We don't want to hear about anyone's dirty laundry (God knows everyone has skeletons).  We want the candidates to tell us what they're going to do for the United States!
its a Facade~.............
S he didn`t mean any of what she says.
She knew it and that is the reason the guy didn`t get
fired, he did a job that she needed to be done.

Raise above this Obama, your a good man and she knows it.

Bill sit down.

Obamam 08'
Cant wait for all Obama s republican supporters here vote in the general election for him.
I guess she forgot about Bill saying he had tried marijuana, but didn't inhale, and we elected him as president. Not everyone is perfect Hillary, look at Bill.
This is for J. Merle Stanley from Westchester, NY.  The admission to cocaine use is called honesty!  Thats something most americans including George W. or Hillary don't have a clue about!!!
By the way, WHEN is Obama going to be properly vetted by the media? When are they going to talk about -- not his 1996 questionaire -- which he conveniently says he did not write, but his 2003 questionaire (which he conveniently has opposite positions now)? Would someone in the press, please, PLEASE start asking him some hard hitting questions. You all got your way. The race is now tight in New Hampshire. Can you now start doing your jobs?
TEE HEE!! WHAT A BUNCH OF POO POO FOR NOTHING.  HILLARY SHOULD HAVE NEVER GOTTEN THIS FAR.
i'm against negative campaigning but it gets good press coverage. so, i'm attacking joe biden as a sneaky politician! first the nerve of him to stand up for the troops in voting for funding ied safe vehicles when the demo political stand was no funding without a extraction date! the turncoat abandoned the other candidates to save troop's lives over political gain in the polls! that type of disloyalty based on principle and integrity was just to show them up, the nerve! then he snuck in a bill to have a comprehensive way to end iraq and was a collaborator with the gop to get it passed! then he played gotch ya in the debate by showing his foreign affairs expertise on pakistan being the greater nuke threat and not iran! so far he's disloyal, a collaborator, and a showoff. and he voted against the iran bill! more grandstanding at the expense of hill & obama! purely negative campaigning! and last but not least he had the audacity to be right each time! maybe that's why he doesn't need celebs to parade for him since during the debates the candidates themselves say "joe's right" in chorus. see the sneaky sob even hoodwinked clinton, obama. and edwards to acknowledge he's right. gotta watch that joe or he might surge up the polls and be the demo huck of this campaign!
Let's keep the campaign focused on the issues!

We don't want to hear about anyone's dirty laundry (God knows everyone has skeletons).  We want the candidates to tell us what they're going to do for the United States!
Clinton has been the victim of these kind of attacks for years, the right wing has dissected every aspect of her life looking for anything they can use against her. .... She shouldn't apologize because Obama's drug use (& any other admitted transgression)should be considered by voters BEFORE the primaries. His drug use will most certainly be used by the Republican machine if Obama is the nominee.
I was under the impression that when one runs for public office, and especially the presidency of the United States, that every aspect of their lives, past, present or future should be fair game.

I personally want to know every little aspect of these peoples lives from birth through death if they're going to be making decisions on my behalf about the country I live in. End of story.

However, I would like to say to the numerous people on this blog keep using the term "dirty politics". I don't see it that way. If it's true, then it's not dirty.

Lying is dirty. And quite frankly I'm a bit sick to death of all the lying that's been taking place with the current adminsitration.

The lying needs to stop.

The Republican party was perfectly OK with GWB being a coke addict and an alcoholic - oh, wait - that's when they scream the loudest - like military service.
Hillary will win the nomination.  She may lose Iowa, but Super Tuesday will have all the Oprabama "fans" in a tizzy.

I'm glad at least remarks like this get onto msnbc. I'm a loyal fan, but this site is terribly one-sided. Every story seems slanted to favor Hillary and to hurt Obama.
You guys are so right! It's so childish, it's like talking about someone in back of them, and then apologizing for their actions. People are more smarter than that. At least everyone is starting to see how polarizing she is
By the way she didnt mock his kindergarten prediction she pointed out after he said he never thought about running that as early as 1st grade he thought about president so Obama distorts the truth and hilliary points it out and you people all to blinded freak on her or maybe are used by republican operitives to stir you dolts up by pitting them against each other. Now he brings up drugs so to get street cred and your mad at hilliarys people for pointing out that he said it,
Silly girl, trix are for kids not people who are supposed to be adults.  But just as before Clintons will cover themselves and leave someone else holding the ball.  "OOOHHHH did they do that??"  Come now haven't we learned enough from the first one not to do it again?
I AM NOT A COLD HEARTED BYTCH!!!!! I JUST WANNA BE PRESIDENT WAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Obama did drugs in kindergarden lmao Hillary is desperate
Hillary supporters.  I remember a week to 2 weeks ago when I saw half Obama supporters and half Hillary supporters writing on these blogs.  Now, look at the responses on the blog.  Either Hillary supporters have switched over to Obama who too disappointed to even comment.  Athenticity will always prevail and as you've seen over the course of 3 weeks, Hillary's poor management and decision making has cost her quite a bit.  Imagine what her cabinet and administration would look like.  Imagine her managing her administration the way she is now.  That's why I love this process.

As I've said before and I'll say it again, the facts are in front of everyone's eyes now.  No denying who the clear and true leader of our country should be.

Obama 08
As a Democrat and an American I am tired of this below the belt politics.  Personally I don't care if Senator Obama used drugs as a teen no more than I cared about Bill Clinton's private life, but as someone who works 40 hours a week I care about what each candidate is going to do to get this train wreck economy back on track.   Also, I would like to know why the media consistenly seems to block out John Edward's message in favor of the slugfest between Obama and Clinton.  I don't know about anyone else but this campaign is beginning to sound alot like 04' when Gephardt and Dean went back and forth and Kerry quickly rose to the top and took the nomination.  I hope Senator Obama and Clinton will finally begin to tell the American people where they stand on the issues our time.  I know Edwards can't win in the public's eye but I like his message.
Sen. Clinton's staff playing good cop/bad cop. It's so transparent: put a staffer up to something underhanded, then deny it.

THis is the way these people have played ball all the way along. It's not a surprise that Obama is moving up. I wonder if Edwards can also capitalize on this.

Too bad Biden is so balnd. He's the best of the lot on that side.

One could say the same about Obama.  Whenever something negative comes out (i.e. D-Punjab) it's someone else who did it and he didn't know about it.

Hypocrisy rears its ugly head again.
I feel it's time for a clean political race. Stop apologizing and do something worth while for this country.I am from Arkansas, I was very active in voting for Bill Clinton, although he didn't have a clean background as well, He and Hillary both hid things from the American people. Obama has been honest so far, and most of us has done somethings that were illegal at one time or other in our lives, But we must grow up. This is what all the canidates should do!!!!!!!!!!! It is time for a change in this country. I am for who ever is best to run this country regardless of their past . Every president of this country has had a shady past from Washington to Bush. What we need is a government that is split. Maybe a Dem. Pres/Rep. vice Pres. or a Rep. Pres./ Dem, vice Pres, maybe this way we can maintain a check and balance form of government.
Hey I got one for MSNBC. Why dont you actually "look into" his past rather then talk about about how offended he is. Oh but I guess that would not suit your obvious pro-Obama agenda now would it?
Republicans would never use his drug use against him who would ever think such a thing...............Karl Rove would never stoop that low to push a person in another party thats easier for them to beat.
Everything I know about Hillary Clinton, says that she remains in complete control of her campaign (with the exception of Blabber mouth Bill).  She planned this, and no fake apology will ever convinve me otherwise.

Obama will handle tough questions from the Republicans just as easily as he is handling Hillary.  For people who say Obama is not vetted.  He has been, by the Hillary machine, and the best they can come up with is the admission of drug use in his youth that he already acknowleded on his own terms long ago.

As we all know Hillary has been vetted for years by the Republicans.  And we know they have lots of ugliness already known about her, things that Obama had had enough class not to bring up.
Blah, Blah, Blah.....She says, he says. At the end of the day the nomination should be about who can best turn around this world-wide mess that Bush and Cheney have created over the past 7 years. Obama, I concede, is a good talker but little else. He is, at the end of the day, very inexperienced and it shows every now and then when he is on the stage with much more seasoned politicians like Biden, Dodd, Edwards, Clinton. No matter what he says he will still have to deal with Washington and a novice like him will get a rude awakening if he is elected. With the country in the shape it's in we cannot afford to have on-the-job-training for a president. The 4 folks I have listed above above are all much more qualified that Mr. Obama. He's young and at some time in the future, when the country is not in the mess it's currently in, and if he can demonstrate some enhanced knowledhge about the issues then I could consider voting for him. His time may come but not NOW please!
Did anyone ask Bill Clinton, Al Gore,John Kerry or George Bush if they SOLD drugs....Oh is it only black youths that try drugs who must be a seller also?  This is why I will NEVER vote for this piece of "White Trash"
Joe (Sent Thursday, December 13, 2007 12:24 PM)

Point me to the book or speech in which either of those former presidents/presidential candidates admitted to using cocaine.

Can't find it?  Maybe that explains why they haven't been asked if they sold drugs.  Wait, Bush was asked a lot about his possible cocaine use, but because he refused to talk about it, it never got beyond that point.

When you admit to having used cocaine, you should expect questions to be asked about it.  Or does Obama think he is entitled to a free pass just because he volunteered the information?  Sorry, it doesn't work that way.

If Hillary had said something similar, I would imagine that many of the same people screaming right now would DEMAND a full account of every pill she popped and every line she snorted.
For someone who is touting her vast experience and how she will be ready to lead from day one, all of these missteps, retractions and apologies are not exactly portraying someone with a steady hand. Of course, I don't believe for a minute that the kindergarten flap, the Muslim comment, or this latest drug smear were not cleared with her. It is really pathetic - and, frankly, scary - that someone like this is running. Iowa and NH Democrats, PLEASE VOTE FOR OBAMA - we need someone honest in the White House who can bring this country together.
Clinton is raising questions on Obama's character swiftboat style trying to take away his best asset, his candor. Karl Rove politics.

Two separate "Obama's a muslim" emails.

Now her NH campaign chair says he's a drug user and perhaps even a pusher.

One week after Carville says: "You've seen nothing yet on mtp, do you really believe these were a coincidence?
Wake up and smell the pot folks.  Why do you stand up for a man who refuses to pledge allegiance to the flag or wear the flag on his lapel.  I don't want a president who is disloyal to our flag.  Thousands died for the flag of Freedom and Obama so much as spits on it.  What is wrong with you jerks?  Are all you so-called men afraid of a smart woman?  Sure you are!
Stick a fork in your girl Dickie Flatts. She's folding up like cheap suit.
Hillary Clinton is running a dirty campaign: Surprise, surprise.

First, Obama's honesty is a very telling and pleasing contrast to "but I didn't inhale", "it depends on what 'is' is", or Bush's refusal to admit the obvious in his own past. etc.  So this is not a road anyone in her campaign with a spare brain cell should have taken.  Baby boomers and those who have followed all know how unusual it would be for Obama NOT to have experimented.

Everyone also knows that Republicans attacking Obama on this score just ask for reminders about George's drinking and drugging, the Bush and Cheney DUIs,   etc. etc.

Keep it up HRC.  Those of us who are hoping against hope that you won't be our Dem candidate are cheered every time you pull this kind of stunt.

And, by the way, if it winds up being HRC against Rudy,   sending out surrogates to attack his personal life or less than savoury financial history won't be a very wise approach either for obvious reasons.

This is supposed to be the seasoned mistake proof candidate?

Looks more like the Clintons are running this thing like a couple of old generals fighting the last war. Emphasis on "old'. The longer this goes on, the more old school, politics as usual, Hillary Clinton looks. And experience isn't an asset when you keep demonstrating how little you've learned from it.
Wow! If this response is indicative of the general disgust that the American people feel for that old Clinton type of 'smear your enemy' politics, then she really is toast.  Not only will she lose the early states of Iowa, NH and SC but she will destroy whatever firewall she expects to hold her up on super Tuesday.  Oh Abe, say it again.
Obama '08
Wow, I hope I don't get these people on my jury should i do anything wrong... OUCH!!!

Guess there are a lot of Hatary's out there.

It will be interesting to see Obama in the general election - you can't just ignored attacks (Hello Kerry).

Joe, glad to see I wasn't the only person that noticed that!!!! Great post!
Oh Poor Obama wants all of us to feel sorry for him because Big Bad Hillary dears to mention anything about his past, Obama and his campaign need to toughen up if he expects America to vote for him to be out next president, please, Oprah has to practically hold his hand and tell us why we should listen to him, can't anybody see that Obama has to stand up for himself and convince us? Hillary is strong enough to be president, Obama is not!
It just goes to show that you can't believe anything that comes from her mouth. I am sorry but I just don't think this country is ready for her to run it. Every 21 days she will have to apoligize for something else. The hit song "Apologize" says it all. Face it "IT IS TO LATE TO APOLOGIZE!" God help this country.
Hillary looks tired so I imagine keeping up with all her rogue campaign people is exhausting and near impossible to do.  I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt.  If she IS condoning what's going on, I think she has to get a little dirty to play in the schoolyard with the big boys anyway.  I don't think you get to be in her position (or Obama's or Bush's) without being a little "schmarmy".  Don't kid yourselves that Obama's playing entirely fair.  Must be nice to be a childhood screw-up and come out the other end looking like a golden boy.  I may be able to relate to him but that doesn't mean I want someone like that running my country.
Another cheezy attempt from the Clinton's camp.
I'll only vote for EXPERIENCE and Obama does NOT have it.
I'll only vote for EXPERIENCE and Obama does NOT have it.
DIAMOND's comments are accurate - Hillary has been in numeroius "scuttles" - the most damning is her knowledge of the PROMIS software (puportedly sold to binLaden by "W" - hence our inability to catch him).

Hillary's friend, Vince Foster also knew about Promis - and I bet any amount of $ that his "suicide" was PROMIS related - not White Water related.

Then there's the Clinton's knowledge of drug trafficking through AK; Bill's exploitation of NAFTA/CAFTA; Hillary's inability to stand under the AIPAC pressures relative to her views on Palestinians rights -

This women is disingenuous - America will be in for "more of the same" if she becomes President.

I encourage everyone to "jump on to the FEC website" and click on to PAC money donantions and then expenditures - see how steadfast these candidates are in their projected beliefs!

Stephanie
Oh sure, let's just overlook the drug use...
Are you insane? What has this country come to when someone admits to drug use and the other candidate has a clean record--but we bash them? Are you people serious? Yes, GB jr has a drug use record and look what a moron he is--he completely messed up this country ... that should be an example!!
Hello...wake up America!
amazes me that you, media,  are accepting at face value the claim that this wasn't intentional. This was a carefully orchestrated effort to spread a smear. Classic dirt and deny.
