More oh-eight: Tight Dem race in NH

Mark your calendars: On January. 15, MSNBC will air the first post-New Hampshire Dem debate. The Nevada Democratic Party will partner with the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and IMPACTO, 100 Black Men of America, and the College of Southern Nevada to hold the second Democratic presidential debate in Las Vegas.

A new Research 2000 New Hampshire primary poll, conducted for the Concord Monitor, mirrors the CNN/WMUR poll from earlier this week. Just one point separates Obama and Clinton, though in this new poll, it's Obama who comes out on the high side, leading Clinton 32%-31% -- with Edwards at 18%. The poll assumes a Dem-to-indie split of 63-37%. Among Democrats, Clinton leads, 36%-27%. Among independents, Obama leads 40%-23%. So the electorate's makeup matters A LOT. The pollster also matched up Clinton and Obama in a two-way race and found Obama leading 45%-41%. In a two-way between Clinton and Edwards, Clinton led 47%-41%. And in a two-way between Obama and Edwards, Obama led 46%-39%.

On the GOP side, the results look similar to other recent New Hampshire polls, with Romney leading at 31%, followed by Giuliani at 18%, McCain at 17%, Huckabee at 9%, and Paul at 7%. This poll assumes a GOP/indie split of 81%-19%. Among Republicans, Romney's lead remains largely unchanged, 32% to Giuliani's 19% and McCain's 16%. Among independents, Romney drops to 18% and McCain spikes to 21% -- and Paul in third at 16%.

The poll was conducted Monday thru Wednesday.

I'm sure Van will bombard us with his polls in a few minutes....
clinton has lost the lead in n.h. according to a poll released this am. i'm sure there will be a poll by the ap or rassmussen to contradict this poll.
The pollster also matched up Clinton and Obama in a two-way race and found Obama leading 45%-41%.

This is key. Edwards ship-jumpers will tend (slightly) to go with Obama, though not in as great umbers as Obama would wish. Edwards supporters are known as die-hards, but an IA squeaker will put pressure on people to peel off to help their second-choice candidate. A couple thoughts on this: first, pro-Donkey folks will be more likely to peel off because they care more about the party relative to the candidate (good for Hillary). Second, Edwards supporters who list Obama as #2 are more anti-Hillary than Edwards supporters who list HRC as #2 are anti-Obama, so will be more likely to peel off at primary time (good for Obama).

After NH, Edwards will probably be out of there, and this effect more than likely will break the race one way or the other. That's why it's odd that you don't see more emphasis on second choice and head-to-head polls.
People, it doesn't matter who wins the dem nom as long as huckabee is the repuke nom., since all top three dem candidates beat this guy in a general election hands down!
It's nice to see in the last few months that people are beginning to have questions about Hillary being the frontrunner in this race. I have been saying for over a year, I think she is the worst choice for the Democratic Party and the country. I am tired of negative politics, divisiveness and business in Washington as usual. She only represents more of the same. Any Edwards supporter who would give their blessing to Hillary rather than Obama (if it comes down to that choice) has not been listening to a word Edwards has to say. Edwards wants change. The only change Hillary represents is that she is a woman. To vote for someone on the gender issue alone is like betting on Western Oregon U. to beat LSU because WOU is your favorite team; might make you feel good at the time but the ensuing slaughter will leave a bad taste in your mouth and just encourage LSU to play more patsies on their way to Number One.

Funny. Thats what the Democrats said about Bush. Will they ever learn?
Patrick, although I'm a Republican, if I reregister and run as a Dem, I can beat that Huckster.

If he gets the nod, the Dems will have 62 senate seats and 325 house seats.
I'm sure Van will bombard us with his polls in a few minutes....
