Clinton talks endorsement, E-word

Posted: Friday, December 14, 2007 2:48 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones
JOHNSTON, Iowa -- Clinton spent half of a news conference today announcing the endorsement of Iowa U.S. Rep. Leonard Boswell (D), then took questions on the Obama drug use dust-up, her electability, her decision to compete in Iowa and how she’s handling the concerns her husband has reportedly expressed about her campaign.

Clinton was asked several times what she meant by comments made during her Iowa Public Television interview that there would be no surprises in a Hillary Clinton campaign. Was she referring to Obama?

"No, it was directed at me," she said. "I think, as many people have said, I’ve read this quote from a lot of my supporters. I’m a known quantity. I am tested and vetted, but what’s most important in this campaign is who will be the best president. That’s my primary case to the people in Iowa and across America. We don’t know what’s going to happen in the future, and we need a president who is ready on Day One for anything.”

She did not answer a question about whether Obama’s drug use could hurt his electability, choosing instead to reiterate that Shaheen’s comments were not authorized or condoned and that she had apologized to the Illinois senator. Clinton said she had never done drugs and declined to expand on that any further, saying she had answered the question many times before. She also declined to make any pledge not to air negative ads unless that pledge was signed by all the Democratic candidates and argued that drawing distinctions was a legitimate thing to do.

She did not take the opportunity, as she was asked, to say that a candidate’s indiscretions during his teenage years should not be an issue in the campaign.

“It’s certainly not an issue in my campaign, and I said that very clearly to Sen. Obama,” she said.

When asked whether she had ever second-guessed her decision to campaign in Iowa, Clinton said no.

"No, you know, I guess I’ve been in enough campaigns over a lot of years to know that there is no predictability, and there is certainly no inevitability," she said. "You have to get out and work for every single vote. That’s what I have always done. I don’t know any other way to do it."

She went on to play up her planned 99-county Iowa blitz. When asked how she was responding to her husband’s concerns about her campaign, she seemed bemused.

“"I don’t know what you’re talking about with these concerns," Clinton said. "You know, I really don’t, and I understand that there’ve been some stories, but as I said in the interview earlier, I called my campaign, and I said, ‘Are we having a shake-up? I don’t know anything about it.’

"So I’m very happy with the team I have. The team here in Iowa is superb; it is doing such a great job across the board, so we’re just going to get up every day and work hard. That’s the only way that I know how to run a campaign, and I believe that making change requires hard work."

obiviously she forgot to tell people in Iowa about the E word

The Iowa polls are coming fast and furious, with a new one by Research 2000 (Dec 10-13, 500 Dem & GOP LV, MoE +/-4.5%) showing Obama and Huckabee both leading by nine, which represents a net 11-point swing in Obama's favor over the last month and a net 18-point swing to Huckabee:

Democrats
Obama 33 (+8 vs. last poll Nov 11-14)
Clinton 24 (-3)
Edwards 24 (+3)
Richardson 9 (-1)
Biden 3 (-1)

Hey Van...I'm having to do your job for you.....
Here we go>>>>>>>>> hillaryclinton.com
"Work hard"- she is saying that too much lately - too much of a Bushism from 2004
Also her comments beg the question, if she cannot manage her campaign staff, how can she manage a White House staff, foreign relations and running a whole country?
In article on Tuesday, the day before Sheehan's comments, a column appeared on First Read indicating that the Clinton campaign was shopping the drug story.

So this idea that these comments were unauthorized is ludicrous. (after all, let's remember Sheehan isn't some college volunteer but rather National Co-Chair of her campaign.)

Who does she think she's kidding?
Senator Obama was on the Tom Joyner morning show today.  The largest syndicated Black radio station in the country.  They were dissing on hillary but he was a gentleman.  You can listen below:

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/

Clinton personally apologized to Obama on the tarmac of the Ronald Reagan Airport before they flew to Iowa for a debate.
"I take the Clinton campaign's word that they didn't know what this guy was doing and I understand all that, but the one thing I will say is, I told my staff that if I catch you guys doing any kind of stuff like this, you're fired. Period," the Illinois Democrat told syndicated radio morning show host Tom Joyner Friday.

Hillary don't know if Bill can save you on this one...not sure he's "BLACK ENOUGH" despite Andrew Young
New I poll just released. Hillary Clinton leads by 29 pts. .come see why hillaryclinton.com  ( does not take drugs and has never taken illegal drugs)
That's my girl..hillaryclinton.com
that's my mom.. hillaryclinton.com
If there is one thing that Clinton lovers and haters alike should never forget is don't ever count her out until it's over. A lot of people on these blogs are the same naysayers who said she would never be elected Senator. And then once she was, that she would wilt under pressure and never be re-elected. Again, she has proven her detractors wrong. No one can deny that Iowa is an incredibly tight race and ironically, the results can be affected by things as simple as the weather, the football game and how many people feel like going out on caucus night. And yet, the results here have the potential to affect later states. I think the compressed calendar does a disservice to both the candidates and the American people in general. One slip up, one YouTube moment and it's over. That is why, regardless of the outcome of Jan. 3 in Iowa, only Clinton and Obama have the muscle and money to go the distance thru Feb 5.
THAT'AS MY DAUGHTER..hillaryclinton.com
Hillary Rodham Clinton is the best thing since sliced bread!
Somebody needs to ask that racist Goldwater Girl Hillary: "We know your husband did drugs - even though he didn't inhale. Did he ever share them with or sell them to anybody?
Oh please, this NH underling thing is being blown so out of proportion. It's ridiculous. Obama is no angel, let's not forget his Punjab-D memo about Hillary that he had to disavow and put the blame off on a subordinate. And that's only one of many examples of his campaign tactics of hope. The "hope" is that the press continues to anoint him as the next black JFK while overlooking his oh so numerous inadequacies. It's ironic he claims to be an agent of change, yet he knows how to play the game just as well as the establishment. NO ONE makes it to the Senate by being an "outsider" - that's just more spin by every new politician trying to sound fresh. My only hope is that Iowans are smarter than that and caucus for the best candidate - Hillary Clinton!
Whenever she says she will be ready from day one to be president - inferring that the other candidates won't be ready - I just shake my head in disbelief. What IS this huge experience advantage that she thinks she has over Obama, Edwards, Biden, etc.?? She was First Lady of both Arkansas and the US - NOT Governor or President! She has been in the Senate seven years. What major accomplishments has she had in the Senate? And we all know her failure on health care when she was the US First Lady. And now her campaign is totally out of control. Obama, Edwards, Biden, Dodd, and Richardson are equally qualified to lead this country from day one. I prefer Obama, because I so admire his courage and wisdom  and judgment in opposing the war in Iraq back in 2002. I just wish more of the media would challenge Hillary on this claim that she has the edge on experience.
Hey Grace,
Remember Howard Dean was in the lead too at this time four years ago. And those numbers you just quouted...look at the high percentage of those who are most likely to change their mind before caucus night. Anyone can win in this state.
DID IT EVER DAWN UPON ANYONE THAT THE OBAMA'S DRUG ISSUE IS A HUGE "NEGATIVE" FOR OBAMA THE PERSON WHO ADMITS THAT HE USED "COCAINE". A HIGHLY ADDIDICTIVE DRUG, WHO'S TO SAY THAT HE WOULD NOT USE IT AGAIN ? WERE TALKING ABOUT C O C A I N E FOR FRIGHIN SAKES.
Van,

I need a fix; please post the latest poll numbers.
Grace, since everything is always, not personal, and then you single someone out I figured I would belittle you publicly the same way you did.

Okay, so Obama is winning in Iowa... Bill Clinton didn't even give Iowa a go and won the presidency. So, let's reference the poll that has Hillary Clinton over 50% with Obama in the very early 30s.

Not only that, but Kerry was out-polling Bush majorly - and Kerry and Obama both relied on tons of youngins to win the nomination. Young people don't win elections, and pacifists don't win commander in chief.
Todd & Domemico;

Apropose of nothing re this item, Ive become terribly disappointed with this entire bolg.  When Todd was with the National Journal, he was wonderfully objective.  Also, this blog was, then, greatly objective.  Now, since the two of you have taken over this space (still like Mark), you folks have done everything possible to CREATE conflicts, most especially with your "leads" into stories/items.  It never used to be that way--why is it now?  I suspect it's because conflict makes for "news" whereas simple "reporting" does not.

Personally, I wish Todd would go back to his objectivism as it was at the National Journal rather than, as he is on this blog, trying to "create" news and controversies for the sake of stories.

Naturally, Todd will not respond.

E-word?  You mean, 'Eggs'?
"I believe that making change requires hard work."

HRC

Doesn't that sound an awful like GW Bush's statement during the 2004 debate that his job is "hard work, got to work hard."  I guess HRC and GW Bush approach the Presidency with the same thought process
Kaye. Dubya has a degree from Harvard Bidness School, and he can't manage the Truth.
If she thinks her campaign staff is fine then she is too blind or too stupid to get it.  Even die-hard Hillary fans are being turned off by Mark Penn and his antics.
If Hillary is so very electable, why isn't she ahead very much (if at ALL) in any of those first three or four states?

You'd think someone who claims to be "so much more electable" than the other dems would be quite a bit ahead...

You aren't electable if you lose Iowa, NH, and SC...
LINCOLN BEDROOM

FOX NEWS, 2000 - Hillary Rodham Clinton denied allegations that she or her fund-raisers offered overnight stays in the Lincoln Bedroom and Camp David to supporters of her Senate campaign. "We have friends and supporters come and spend time with us and spend the night with us that we are getting to know and who like spending time with us," Clinton said when questioned at a campaign stop at a western New York diner. "I don't see what's news about that." . . . White House staffers said that since the summer of 1999 there have been at least 26 instances in which people, mainly couples, were overnight guests after donating to the first lady's campaign or promising to do so. . . "The Lincoln Bedroom was never sold," Clinton said in 1997, when the White House released a list of 938 guests who had spent the night at the executive mansion up to that point in the Clinton presidency. The list included the names of political supporters, as well as entertainment luminaries and old Clinton friends

CASTLE GRANDE

1999 Mrs. Clinton is mentioned 36 times in the fraud indictment against Webster Hubbell. Writes the AP's Peter Yost: "Starr alleges Hubbell concealed his own and Mrs. Clinton's work during the 1980s on a failed Arkansas land deal, known as Castle Grande, that federal regulators say was riddled with 'insider dealing, fictitious sales and land flips.'" Yost notes the criminal contempt trial of Susan McDougal: "The indictment against Mrs. McDougal details a series of grand jury questions about Mrs. Clinton and Castle Grande that Mrs. McDougal refused to answer." The Castle Grande project involved a baroque set of deals aimed at least in part in shoring up the McDougal's failing savings and loan.

Not until the immaculate reconception of Mrs. Clinton's billing records in 1996 did her extensive role in the matter come to light. Billing records documenting HRC's work on the Castle Grande development scam were discovered in the family quarters of the White House. HRC said she has no idea how they got there.

She also claimed that she could not remember her work on the project nor 15 conversations with Hubbell's wheeler-dealer father-in-law, Seth Ward. In the end, Castle Grande cost the S&L nearly $4 million in unpaid principal and interest.

Bill E

This is what we call a sock puppet post:  A paid Clinton campaign staffer pretending to be an unaffiliated person, then they make a BS statement like (Iowa poll shows Cliton with 29 point lead), and then direct you to Clinton's web site.  DO NOT BUY IT.  IT IS BS.
Talk about adversarial... It's, "Gorification", Redux!

"So senator Clinton, when did you stop (insert horrible, sourceless accusation here)We keep HOPING for a SHAKE-UP in your campaign to validate our narrative about how it's in a shambles and on the verge of a shake-up; When can we expect that to happen and how many times will we have to insinuate it before then?
"Senator Obama admitted to using cocaine, why won't you pledge that mentioning it will again validate our narrative about how your panicked campaign, (which is in a shambles and on the verge of a shake-up)is playing dirty. We'd really like to save that cocaine thing for the general election, if you know what I mean (as in, if Obama was the nominee), as the republicans really know how to knock that one out of the park, and we should be in full "tear down", buyers remorse mode by then..."

"We'd really LOVE to create the impression of tension between you and your husband (he's such great copy!) about your campaign (Which, is in a shambles and on the verge of a MAJOR shake-up!!!PLEASE PLEASE!)

(I call this tactic, "Gorification", in honor of Al Gore, who received almost IDENTICAL treatment in 2000 during the primaries against Bill,"Big Media's choice", Bradley. Gore was depicted as being, cold, aloof, wonkish, pedantic,thin-skinned and not entirely honest. Every movement and statement Gore made was filtered through this narrative so that the tone of stories about him reflected the coldness, aloofness, etc., thus validating and reinforcing the pre-established story-line.

When she wins Iowa, what will the Big Media narrative switch to then? Will she continue be "Gorified", throughout the primaries, or will the machine set it's
sights on a new target? They NEVER let Al go, even after he won the nomination. They carried his narrative all the way through to election night.
Now, almost eight years later, he's emerged as a media darling, and the old narrative has been replaced with one so positive that the media STILL hopes and prays for a Gore candidacy this election cycle (Come back Al, all is forgiven!)with all their might. Mr. Gore is wise not to trust them, and it is a sad thing for us that they didn't like him when it would have meant something.
E-word? Exit?
"She also declined to make any pledge not to air negative ads unless that pledge was signed by all the Democratic candidates and argued that drawing distinctions was a legitimate thing to do."
--I agree with Sen. Clinton on this.  Much like Obama an patriotism, I'd rather the candidate show me in actions than tell me.

"I said, ‘Are we having a shake-up? I don’t know anything about it.’"
--Yeah, like she's going to admit that the organization is in disarray, petty infighting is tearing it apart at the seams, and many campaign insiders, Fmr. Pres. Clinton, and Sen. Clinton herself are wall orried.  She answered the idiot reporter well.
Desperado, why don’t you come to your senses?
You been out ridin’ fences for so long now
Oh, you’re a hard one
I know that you got your reasons
These things that are pleasin’ you
Can hurt you somehow
What was Hillary doing as a TEENAGER? She was a REPULICAN, and a Goldwater "Girl" - far more dangerous than youthful indescretions with substances.
Thanx MK, that was my point too!!

So "T" following your line of reason, becuz what a person was or did as a TEENAGER, Hillary is probably going to turn into a REPUBLICAN
Talk about adversarial... It's, "Gorification", Redux!

"We'd really LOVE to create the impression of tension between you and your husband (he's such great copy!) about your campaign (Which, is in a shambles and on the verge of a MAJOR shake-up!!!PLEASE PLEASE!) So could you deny the unattributed rumors, so we can turn THAT into a story about how "Clinton DENIES, "reports" of Bill being unhappy with her campaign (which is in a shambles...)

(2nd try)
so here is HRC and Bill back in thier hippie days...... and you think she has never smoked dope, get real

http://www.strangepolitics.com/content/item/10315.html
Van,

Common, why didn't you include all the polls number? As usual, you are so one sided. Post the entire latest polls not only the one that is favorable to Billary Clinton.

What about the new Concord poll in NH ...lol... Your candidate is toast.

PPsssssssssss. Obama, i got some of the "good stuff" call soon.
Susan, Tampa, Florida: If you truly don't believe that HRC wasn't fully engaged in Bill's presidency then you don't know what Wellesley College is all about.
I wonder if the Clinton campaign is intentionally downplaying her position in IA to then come in first easily - then the rest will be done.
Van,
Glad you're back...we've missed you so!

What Bill said was that he did drugs twice and didn`t inhale.
My question is than why twice if you didn`t inhale.

Lair....Lair....Lair Pants on firer!

If you do drugs twice I guess the first time was good for you.
Van what polls are you looking at? how old are those numbers?

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/latestpolls/index.html
I love the acrimony that is now surfacing. You know, Obama really is not saint, angel or divine being. He's had his slip-ups and he has CERTAINLY attacked Hillary Clinton. I urge many of you to re watch the Philadelphia debate. Drawing distinctions and attacking both have a fine line, but once Senator Clinton does it people cry wolf. But you know, I love that there is a rigorous vetting process going here and that Obama isn't getting the flack he deserves. The republicans will not give up without a big fight whether it's Senator Clintor OR Senator Obama. And trust me there will be electibility issues with him already - his polling on the electibility issue among Dems is MUCH lower than Senator Clinton already. So the argument panders to engendered Republican myths and not a truly open and fair Democratic primary process. I hope for all our sakes we take a closer look at some sanctified candidates if we truly hope to win in '08.
Hey Iowa....Whats that in the sky? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No its HILL-O-COPTER coming to a town near you!
Kinda sounds like Dukakis in a tank huh! Wonder if she will wear a silly hat? Maybe she should just ride her broom!!
Go OBAMA! Any one smell the desperation from the woman who would be queen?
thank god all this poll crap wil be at an end soon as far as the early states are concerned. there is so much stuff posted here that has half truths, not true and has no meaning at all. drugs in high school. give me a break. that isn't worth the mental thought to consider. nothing is sticking because nothing is there except hopeful wishes by those who need to hate. whoever wins. win. we will all see soon.
Rezko, a Syrian-born U.S. citizen who owned a real estate development business and a group of fast-food franchises, has spent his career showering Illinois officials with campaign money. He was a top fundraiser for Democratic Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

His connection to Obama began when the future senator got national attention as the first black president of the Harvard Law Review. Rezko was impressed by what he read and offered Obama a job.

The two men kept in contact and he became one of the earliest donors to Obama's campaign when he ran for a state Senate seat in 1996.

Their relationship came into the spotlight last October, the same month Rezko was indicted on federal charges, with the disclosure that Rezko had played a role in the senator's purchase of a home.

Obama bought a house and lot. Rezko's wife bought an undeveloped property next door. The two parcels had once been a single tract of land.

Obama paid $1.65 million for the house and lot while Rezko paid $625,000 for the undeveloped lot. Six months later, Rezko sold a strip of his property to Obama, who wanted to increase the size of his side yard. Obama paid Rezko $104,500, which he says was the market rate.

While Obama has said that the transaction was handled ethically, he has conceded the perception of favor-trading it created was a "boneheaded" mistake.

Rezko is charged with plotting to shake down money management firms hoping to do business with the Illinois Teachers Retirement System, a $39 billion state pension fund, for kickbacks.

He also is charged with swindling the General Electric Capitol Corp. out of $10 million in a deal involving the purchase of pizza restaurants.

Rezko attorney Joseph J. Duffy declined to comment on the case.

While Obama turned down Rezko's offer of a job back in 1991, he ended up in a group of real estate deals involving the developer anyway. He accepted a position at the law firm then known as Davis Miner & Barnhill.

At the firm, he represented community groups that partnered with a developer in getting city and state housing rehabilitation loans. The developer was Rezko. Obama estimates he did only about five hours of work.

Van:  Everything in politics seems to be filtered through a narrative, the media does and the campaigns do.  For example, every little think B.H. Obama does outside the norm that is Washington politics, he gets labeled as inexperienced--and H.R. Clinton is never shy about making points through this filter.  Likewise, H.R. Clinton is viewed as a polarizing figure; thus everything gets filtered through that stereotype.  Mitt Romney the flip-flopper, Huckabee the Christian, Giuliani the 9/11, F. Thompson lacking in energy and drive, Edwards the $400 haircut, Edwards the attack machine, Edwards the trial lawyer, Edwards the 2003 nice candidate, Biden the gaffe machine, and Kucinich the wonk.  The trick is to keep one's nose clean and contradict the negative--neither of which H.R. Clinton has been doing of late.  And THAT is why she has been getting so much negative press.  (The media have already locked the election for her if she wins Iowa, which she won't, so quit fretting about that).  So, maybe people should worry less about the media and more about the campaign and what they bring.  Quit shutting down the conversations with substance.  Sounds to me like people believe in H.R. Clinton's right, inevitability or chances to be the next President more than what she stands for and who she is.  What makes you think your candidate is so special that she deserves special treatment?  It's not like she's The Queen--that title goes to Oprah!
These kinds of posts just crack me up:
"Even die-hard Hillary fans are being turned off by Mark Penn and his antics."
Eric, NY, NY (Sent Friday, December 14, 2007 3:44 PM)"

We are, are we?
I just L.M.F.A.O. at idiots like you.
I'm guessing you've never even been in the same room with a die-hard Hillary fan, O Wise One!

---
Poll lesson for the day:
Check poll org against poll org, not poll against poll. And be VERY careful depending on state polls for your emotional lift on any given day.

And, when the margin of error is +/- 4.5 %, do Obama supporters actually even know what that means?
(Just wondering.  You all suddenly seem VERY excited about POLLS -- haha)
