Who'll get Des Moines Register nod?

Posted: Saturday, December 15, 2007 5:52 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann
DES MOINES, Iowa -- The state of Iowa waits with bated breath tonight for the Des Moines Register to drop its much-anticipated endorsement. Once guarded about the timing of the announcement, the Register Web site now invites visitors to be "the first to know!" by signing up for the DMR text message service. (Yes, I signed up.)

For context: the Des Moines Register endorsement proved a key boost for Edwards in 2004. With a mere eight days until the caucuses, the nod to Edwards super-charged his momentum to yield a surprise second-place finish. The Register's endorsement has proved influential in three of the last four cycles; they backed caucus victor Walter Mondale in 1984 and second-place shower Paul Simon in 1988. (The fluke year was 2000, when the Register's endorsement of Bill Bradley fell flat in the two-man race with Al Gore.)

There's wide speculation on all sides, although the loudest rumor appears to be a possible lean towards Obama. The ed board's evaluation of the senator from Illinois was among the most favorable.

Also, like any big paper, the Register hopes for maximum kingmaker potential. A nod from the state's most-read ink could do the same thing for Obama's upward thrust that it did for Edwards in 2004. On the other hand, Obama took heat for skipping out on a number of Iowa events earlier in the political season, and some might complain that he hasn't been as committed to getting to know the state as much as other rivals.

That said, people in the know have made other predictions, with guesses at everyone from Richardson to Biden to Clinton. As the New York Times' Jeff Zeleny noted today, the fact that the ed board's membership is majority female isn't lost on most observers, nor is the fact that the former First Couple shared a swanky dinner with the papers' editors at fancypants Des Moines establishment Azalea a few weeks ago.

Another candidate that there's some buzz about is Biden. Knowing Team Biden, it's fair to say that there probably isn't anyone who has lobbied harder for the Register's thumbs up.   Biden's Iowa strategy leans heavily on legislative endorsements, and if he's worked the paper half as hard as he's worked the statehouse, he might have half a shot at it. If the Register wants to crown kings, the guy polling fifth in the state might not be the best bet. But if it wants to make a choice no one can argue with, Biden's beloved status in the state and respected foreign policy experience would make him a reasonable choice.

As the sun sets over the Hawkeye state... stay tuned.

Please let it be Biden.  We need Joe's intelligence, expertise in Foreign Affairs, and charisma in the White House.  He is the one who can work on both sides of the aisle in Congress to get this country moving again in the right direction.
Isn't it time somebody really took a look at Joe Biden with something other than the "surething" mindset? Just because there's a lull in the war-on-terror fear right now, the idea that the nation could possibly pass over someone with his "respected foreign policy experience" really boggles the mind. Come on, Iowans! Do the right thing and nominate someone who could be an excellent president, instead of the flavor of the week!

A nod to Hillary would put the so-called know it all pundits in their place.  Here's to hoping...
BIDEN!
sounds to me like the daily obama press release(aka firstread)is trying to head off what apparently is a thumbs up from the register to hillary clinton.  the way they couch even the slightest chance of Hillary getting the nod (i.e., most board members are female, swanky dinner at fancypants restaurant) totally tells the story.....remember the fable about the fox and the grapes? I guess it's alright for these wannabe reporters on this site to coronate obama, but if someone has a differing opinion, there must be some nefarious reason behind it. get a clue chuck and all you chris matthews minions. the people of this country were led down the wrong road with the media's manipulative writings in 2000 and look where you got us.....we won't be so easily led astray again. Vote Hillary 2008!
I heard David Yepsen, the chief political reporter for the Des Moines Register, say on Hardball yesterday that he thought Edwards was the main one to benefit from the dirty tricks of the past week. When Chris Matthews asked if the paper was endorsing Edwards, Yepsen said he didn't know as that is the editorial section's decision. But you could tell that Chris was skeptical. We'll see. I support Obama, so I hope that he gets the nod. But it sounds like their endorsement is good, but not key, to victory if they did not endorse Kerry or Gore in the last two cycles.
This is unreal.  On the Republican side.  Huckabee has lied on his resume yet again.  He said that he held a degree in Theology, he does not.  He then said he held a degree in Religion, he does not.  Come to find out his degree is in Communications.  Are you kidding me, how does someone like this rise up in the polls.  I guess it shows you how easy we Americans are to fooled.  Wake up America the Huckabee you think you know is a fraud.
Barack Obama for a better America.

It's time to Rise and Shine again America.
As an Obama supporter, I think the paper gives Biden the nod.
Does the DMR only endorse Dems?

Is that why the Dem "debate" was less of a cluster flack then the GOP's?
"bated breath" should be baited breath as in the cat eating cheese to attract a mouse with baited breath.
JOE BIDEN
swanky dinners and lobbying. Yeah, that's the really important stuff for our future country leaders to be doing...geesh!
"Dems if you want to win in '08 Biden is your man. The right-wingers and Rove are waiting for Clinton and/or Obama. Biden can beat them badly in the debates as he has shown. And with everyting riding on US foreign policy why would we nominate a lightwieght like Obama?? Let him serve out a term or two in the US Senate and then let's have him run. . .Geez it just doesn't make sense to back a guy who has so little governemnt experience, he is focusing on hype and celebrity and these will not carry him through to the White House. As a Dem I am so tired of losing to the Bushies and the right-wing hate machine. Biden shows well on TV, has terrific experience, a foreign policy master and has lots of Republican friends in Washington, he can get things done!"
I contemplated who I would support for the Democratic nomination for over a year, and after careful consideration I decided a month or so ago to go with Biden. The more I learn about Joe, the more I am impressed and inspired. I am counting on you Iowa, to build the momentum for Joe Biden as your #1, so that when my home state's primary comes around on Feb. 5, people will not be hesitant to vote for Joe. People here agree that his credentials make him the superior choice for the nomination, and most agree that his plan to end the war in Iraq and other policy statements are right. However, people here are hesitant or will not vote for Joe Biden because they want to vote for a frontrunner. Iowa, I ask you, please make Joe a frontrunner. Thank you and Stay Warm, Nick
We are in desperate need of a President who has impeccable and unimpeachable foreign policy and national security credentials, who has an intimate understanding of the Constitution and how to protect and defend it, and who has a grasp of the issues with a depth and breadth of knowledge that will enable him to radically change the course of the ship of state, at home and abroad. You know what would be one of the best things about waking up the morning after Senator Biden has been elected president?...the unbelievably uplifting and comforting feeling that we no longer have to constantly worry about the direction the country is headed or how the challenges of the planet will be met because the nation and the world will be in such good and capable hands.
The immediate, spontaneous response by the other presidential candidates in support of Senator Biden when he was asked about his commitment to civil rights was striking as well as heartfelt. It was obvious to all but the most jaundiced observers that Biden commands a lot of respect, even from his competitors. Seems like an ideal person to bring the party together for the fall campaign, no? Why not the best?
....Barack Obama won the editorial endorsement of Boston Globe...
Let us all hope and pray that Joe Biden gets his deserved nod.  This could be what vaults him in Iowa!
Boston Globe just endorsed Barack. Hurray!!!
Des Moines Register is next ...

Barack Obama 08!!!
Obama is it any day. He has established himself as a major force for change. He is an inspiration to millions of Americans and people all over the world. He is intelligent with sound judgement. Electing Obama will definitely usher a new era in the world.
I don't know this paper well, but if they want to make a choice that will change the direction of the race, they will vote for Biden.  I don't believe they can lose if they do this.
I just got a text message from The Des Moines Register...

They endorsed Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Field and John McCain for the Republican Ticket.
As an Obama supporter, i won't be suprise if Biden get the nod.
McCain and Clinton got the endorsement.
GO HILL GO -

Everyone knows she will be ready to lead on DAY 1 -
you got me sara. i think the kids gloves are going to come off and they will start seeing the real huckabee soon. whoever gets the endorsement is going to be happy. i think biden is not given enough attention as well. he ahs the voting record and ability to bring people together. that is a proven.
Shouldn't the President of the United States have a master's degree in something, like public policy, at least? A B.A. in Religion or Communication alone sounds pretty skimpy to me.
Clinton and McCain got the nod....
SHE GOT IT!!!
I'll play devil's advocate. Who says this endorsement carries weight?

I'm not from Iowa but I thought the storyline with Edwards was that he came in second four years ago through sheer organization and a disproportionate strength in rural areas (because of their weighted system, a farmer's vote means more than those who eat at swanky restaurants like Azalea).

So now Edwards' rise was because of this newspaper endorsement? Not sure I'm convinced.

And as for Mondale, well, isn't Iowa tailor made for him? Simon's bounce might have some validity.
"Indeed, Obama, her chief rival, inspired our imaginations. But it was Clinton who inspired our confidence. Each time we met, she impressed us with her knowledge and her competence.

The times demand results. We believe as president she’ll do what she’s always done in her life: Throw herself into the job and work hard. We believe Hillary Rodham Clinton can do great things for our country." -- From the Des Moine Register
Ah, wouldn't have posted that if I knew it was coming out after the endorsement. To all Clinton supporters, congrats on the news.
I can't believe they picked Hillary.  I was just thinking about all of my girlfriends....liberal to conservative.....and nobody wants her.  I think she's doing an outstanding job in the senate.  I want Joe Biden for my president.
Hands down, the candidate most apt to get things done in a time of economic distress, international termoil, and congressional head-butting, is Joe Biden.  No other candidate, democrat or republican, carries the respect and experience necessary to cross party lines and international borders.  Senator Biden lacks only the money and media coverage necessary to carry his campaign to the lower and middle class American.
America needs Senator Biden as president.  Americans need senator Biden as president.  The world needs Senator Biden as president.
Senator Biden needs the "nod" of the Register.
Joe Biden is the Man! He is head and shoulders above
all other Democratic and Republican candidates. God bless Joe Biden. America needs Joe.
I agree with the majority here, Biden is hands down the most qualified person for the job. It's bewildering and frustrating that we aren't seeing in the polls the kind of love for Joe that we see in this thread. What is likewise frustrating is all this Obama support. Can an Obama supporter please explain to us WHY he deserves this job? I understand that one can easily project a kind of modern (i.e. african-american) JFK fantasy onto him, but other than that and this empty "hope" business what is there to vote for?
DMR wasted their endorsement power. If you read their endorsement, they can't even answer their own question.  "Can she inspire the nation"  The answer to that is "no."  All Hillary inspires is divisiveness.
obama any time the BEST
Oh, looks like Barry Hussein won't get to be king today. The chattering class is wrong again!

Hillary 2008!
It is my hope that we the people ignore all the endorsements and vote our intellect. Joe Biden is the man for this country.
I want to second an earlier question,  what is so great about Barack Obama?  He is the media darling, and writes a great first book, gives great speeches but how does that equal being qualified to be President of this country in such tough times.  This is a sincere question.  I keep giving him 2nd 3rd and 4th chances but always get stuck on the above question.  Can any Obama supporter please explain to me how does giving great speeches qualify him to be agood president?
Clinton knows the issues and knows the political process. Can't wait until she is Prsident!
Was this a sick joke to endorse Hillary by the DMR?
She has no chance in the general election. If the Dems nominate Hillary it will cause such a ground swell this country has never seen in the republican party. She will get buried in the general election.

Carrie Dan I'm sorry how is picking the second place finisher in three of the past four cycles demonstrate the DMR's influence.  If they were truly influential wouldn't they have picked the winner in three of the last four cycles?
Joe Biden should have been the endorsement, and I think Iowans should be a bit offended at how bad this makes the DMR look. Joe is the complete package, and would get votes from independents as well as Republicans. He could win. Hillary might command a large following from a huge marketing campaign, but 60% of voters won't vote for her.
Sara the evangelicals, christian coalition etc have been wandering in the wilderness for several months and then they recognize "The Anointed One"
Obama should be supported.   He will make real change. Obama is the candidate of the future not the failed policies of the past!! Health Care, he will not give up like the last democratic administration did.
Boston... Massachusets - heavily leaning Hillary and not an early state

Des Moines... Iowa, a huge lynchpin for Edwards in 2004 - also an early state.

Both expected to go to Barack, yet the bigger, more important of the 2 endorsements goes to MADAME PRESIDENT!!!

Is it 08 yet?

Hillaryclinton.com :)

Hi Sierra, Jerry, and Bee... any smart comments to make about these endorsements?

Yeah, that's what I thought... so go support your thugs: Bush, Cheney, and Guiliani, liars: Rice, Huckabee, and Romney and just all-around those ignorant with what the American people want or need: Mukasey, Kerik, McCain, and Paul.

Man, no wonder you're all so bitter... being a Republican sucks these days. Jerry, maybe senator Craig would care to comfort you.
