Boston Globe endorses Obama, McCain

Posted: Saturday, December 15, 2007 8:24 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan and Domenico Montanaro
The Boston Globe has endorsed Obama and McCain. The Globe released early excerpts of its editorial to be published Sunday morning.

The Globe’s editorial board “wrote that Obama, the Illinois Democrat, fulfills America's need for ‘a president with an intuitive sense of the wider world,’ and that McCain, the Arizona Republican, ‘has done more than his share to transcend partisanship and promote an honest discussion of the problems facing the United States.’”

"Of Obama, the editorial board wrote that his diverse and international life experience was a plus. 'The most sobering challenges that face this country -- terrorism, climate change, disease pandemics -- are global,' the board wrote. 'America needs a president with an intuitive sense of the wider world, with all its perils and opportunities. Barack Obama has this understanding at his core.'" Of his experience: "It is true that all the other Democratic contenders have more conventional resumes, and have spent more time in Washington," the board wrote. "But that exposure has tended to give them a sense of government’s constraints. Obama is more open to its possibilities."

On McCain: "McCain was praised as a straight talker whose honesty at political cost might help a polarized nation. The board called him an antidote to the 'toxic political approach' of the last two presidential elections. McCain’s views differ from those of this editorial page in a variety of ways. Yet McCain’s honesty has served him well,' the board wrote. 'As a lawmaker and as a candidate, he has done more than his share to transcend partisanship and promote an honest discussion of the problems facing the United States. He deserves the opportunity to represent his party in November’s election.'"

Obama and McCain? Ohhh - now that is ugly. Hillary can't even draw flies anymore.
Good decisions and valid reasoning behind them.  Still waiting on that Des Moines Register endorsement though!
if obama catches fire in the northeast he is going to be hard to stop. mind you it isn't over. the clinton's is strong in this part of the country traditionally. this is troubled territory for john edwards. it shouldn't be that way because john is a really good candidate. i don't think he will get enough contributions to get enough matching funds if he doesn't at least place second in iowa. i hope he can hang.
Excellent! Senator Obama and Senator McCain are truly fine individuals. True men of substance and honor.

Yawn.
Haha, Romney can't even get a home state endorsement.  Guess those who know his record best, like him least.
Both McCain and Obama are good choices.  Here's an idea: McCain for President (for one term), and Obama his running mate as VP.  People don't care about "R's" and "D's" anymore...it's the character of the individuals that matters, and both of these guys have it.

I can conceive of some reasons that might warrant an endorsement of Senator McCain, but “McCain’s honesty” is not one of them.

Why call him honest when he is still trying to mislead people with his definition of “amnesty”?

After McCain said “we never proposed amnesty” at the November 28 CNN/YouTube Republican debate, the moderator had to cut off the audible dissing by the audience.

Quoting TIME Magazine (June 7, 2007):

“One day before the June 5 Republican debate, Senator John McCain tried to preempt the coming criticism. He knew he would spend the debate flanked by nine candidates waiting to rip into the Senate compromise bill he helped write, which calls for a salve of legalization, border security and guest-worker programs.  So in a Miami speech on June 4, he sought to distance himself from the 'a' word.  'Critics of the bill attack this as amnesty,' he said. '[But] we impose fines, fees and other requirements as punishment.' The bill, he said, is not amnesty.

“Yes, it is. Whether you fine illegal aliens or stick them in English classes or make them say a hundred Hail Marys, at the end of the day, illegals would be allowed to stay and become citizens under this bill. That's amnesty....”

Those who enter the U.S. illegally commit a misdemeanor punishable by six months in jail.  Those who enter legally and overstay their visas commit a civil infraction that carries no penalties beyond potential deportation.  Deportation is the minimum sanction required for an effective immigration law.  If you do not take away what the lawbreaker gained by breaking the law, and you substitute a lesser sanction, then for that lawbreaker the sanction is nothing more than "a cost of doing business.”  The element of deterrence is missing.  If illegal immigrants are spared from potential deportation, they will have been given amnesty.

A token punishment is substantially equivalent to no punishment.  Why don’t politicians like McCain just admit that relieving illegal aliens of the legal consequences of their illegal presence in our country, substituting just token punishment, is really amnesty?

An answer was proposed by Dino Teppara, legislative director for Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) (The Hill, May 4, 2006, Letters to the Editor):

“We are a nation of laws.  Benefits must accrue to those following the law, and punishment must be meted out to those who break it. Failure to implement this moral concept of fairness, arguably the foundation of Western civilization, results in a breakdown of society....

“It is sad to see people straining to define and redefine ‘amnesty,’ calling illegal aliens ‘undocumented workers’ and claiming they want to create a ‘path to citizenship.’ The reason for this dishonesty is simple: They know the American people are not with them....”

Boston Globe on Clinton:

"In our view, the choice on the Democratic side is between Obama and Hillary Clinton. Clinton has run a diligent, serious campaign, and her command of the issues is deep and reassuring.

"But her approach is needlessly defensive, a backward glance at the bruising political battles of the 1990s. Obama's candidacy looks forward."
Great news & accurate assesment indeed.
At least one of the two papers got it right!  Hooray for the Boston Globe.  Ted? John?  We're waiting.
Obama '08
this election should belong to the democrats. the only way they could be stopped would be an unelectable candidate.  so the right-wing controlled media created obama, who no one has ever heard of before. this black muslim idiot hasnt got a chance of winning a national election.  but, as always happens, he'll do or say something that the republicans can use against the democratic nominee. if he cared about this country, he wouldnt run. i dont know if he actually works for bush or is just a clown like sharpton who loves attention. hopefully he'll die in aplane crash.
I guess the Boston Globe couldn't resist following Oprah. And they really listened to Hillary on describing Obama's International experience, living in
Indonesia and going to a Muslim school when he was a boy then saying that's his international experience. You have got to be kidding, he's a bad choice for President of the US, and I don't think he understand foreigners any better than GW Bush does. Beside the cocaine, may have killed his brain cells.
As for a republican candidate I really don't care who they endorse, they are all lousy. McCain the war monger and flip flopper, Guiliani, the cheater, Romney
the flip flopper, Huckebee the intolerant religious ex preacher, Fred Thompson, the actor, who wants to act as President for the next four years before retiring, Ron Paul, right wing crazy, what a motley crew. It seems the Des Moines Registrar has gone the same route on the Republican, only they endorsed Hillary Clinton on the Democratic side, this ought to bring every republican supporter who is hiding, from embrassment about Bush to vote for McCain, although he will continue the war in Iraq, whether the war is over or not.  This country is truly lost, and so are the people at these newspapers. With either of these two as front runners on the Democratic side, we can be assure of the senior moment McCain as the next President.
I'm a Biden supporter, and the Globe would have done slightly better endorsing him. However, congrats to Obama. If Biden doesn't make it, I'll vote for Obama. I'm sure Obama supporters would vote for Joe, too. Just remember that JOE IS RIGHT!
BS!!! No offense to OBAMa or OPRAH!!!  He is not ready to govern the free world. He has the intelligence but no Executive experience NO WAY!!. Please OBAMA you can dream, like we all have dreams. You and OPRAH can bring out all the Martin Luther King proverbs/poems all you want but  Experience do Count and do Matters . The simple reason - is the American people cannot undergo another OBAMA looka like President GEORGE depending on all the stupid advisors. Look what is happening for the last seven years. Please wake up America - Hillary is the one because  she has all the experiences and ready to act.
The Boston Globe explanation of their endorsement was factual. The DMR on the other hand reead like it was written by Mark Penn.

Isn't it a shame how low these people go? 4 years ago, what they liked about Edwards was the very thing they say they dislike about him today.

Yepsen has been consistently writing against Obama in the last weeks. An endorsement of Biden would've been more realistic. Greedy people.
The Boston Globe's rationale for the endorsement of Barack Obama was compelling and impressive:

re: "People don't care about "R's" and "D's" anymore..."

Excuse me????

I was an "R" until 1998, when the "R's" decided to impeach a twice-elected President of the US, after Ken Starr couldn't get even ONE Grand Jury indictment on his charges (nevermind any convictions) in our regular US Court system.

Using our government to express that kind of hatred is disgusting.

I promised myself then that I would never vote for another "R" until I helped take our government away from "R's."

So YOU may not care about R's" and "D's" but I wouldn't vote for a Republican if you paid me.

And let me know when Republican GW Bush apologizes for demanding that Americans determine whether we are with him or or against him.
See that is why  i stop listen to the bloggers, it is too one sided. Hillary win an endorsement and it becomes irrelevant, but Obama won one and it is relevant. People remember both Obama and Clinton went the extra mile to win the dmr endorsement. See how many comments we have on the Clinton endorsement and here.
Globe is no surprise.  It is a fave of limo libs and Ivy League elites.   These types are all in for Obama.
My husband and I are both happy! He supports McCain and I support Obama! Thank you, Boston Globe, for helping us to maintain harmony! (but, since I am writing this, I will say - GO OBAMA!!!)
QUOTE ON:  "It is true that all the other Democratic contenders have more conventional resumes, and have spent more time in Washington," the board wrote. "But that exposure has tended to give them a sense of government’s constraints. Obama is more open to its possibilities."  QUOTE OFF

What kind of nonsense is this quote - how do you know Boston Globe WHAT IS and WHAT ISN'T?  You are just handicapping a horse race, right?  You're just GUESSING, right...you know NOTHING, you have the means to sway people, but, without FACT.  OR, should you perhaps consider changing your newspaper's name to the Boston Crystal Ball?  I'd rather have a former, seasoned, Washington, DC insider leading this nation, who, with full knowledge of the "TRICKSOFTHETRADE" than a "NEWBIE" who is now going to learn about the "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" on MY WATCH.  You have openly decided to endorse a candidate based on "GUESSWORK."  Without fact, without citing specific incidents, your endorsement and the reasons for this endorsement are nothing more than your "FIELD OF DREAMS."  I put this candidiate and his lack of experience in Washington Politics in the category of a "COIN FLIP" - ...."OKAY FREINDO, CALL IT."  Why don't you be a wee bit more specific with your use of the word "constraints" - and let's duke it out - what are you doing?  Are you trying to sway voters on GUESSWORK?  You should be heralding the warnings of Paul Revere "THE BRITISH ARE COMING" - not "I THINK SOMEONE IS COMING."  HOGWASH!

Furthermore, I hope my JETS beat your Patriots today...and because you ticked me off, I also hope that the New York Yankees and Alex Rodriguez blow the Red Sox out in 2008.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY "CONSTRAINTS?"
Congratulations Obama - while I wish Hillary got the nod, good for you.

Not sure how much direction NH takes from us Bostonians (I always thought there was a bit of a complex to their neighbors to the south, but congrats.
What I find telling about the endorsement of Obama is this:

Despite the fact that you have a journalist writing the endorsement, there is absolutely no way to hide the fact that Obama is a lightweight and lacks the experience necessary to run the country.  All the Boston Globe was able to highlight was Obama's "intuitive sense of the wider world".  And all this because he lived in Indonesia when he was 6 years old.  In touting his leadership, they pointed to his position on the nuclear proliferation treaty.  Huh?

Contrast with McCain's and Hillary's endorsement where the writers were able to discuss achievements and the accomplishements of both politicians.  If I were Obama, I'd be embarassed by the very thin endorsement.
Go Obama!
First Read, I can't believe you would allow a post that hopes a candidate dies in a plane crash.  Had that been said about anyone else beside Obama, I doubt it would have been allowed.

What exactly is the criteria to reject a comment?  If someone wishing death to a candidate isn't one, then pay tell, what?

To richard rodgers, san diego, ca, any citizen who meets the requirement to run for president certainly has the right to do so and since this country is a democracy, you are freely allowed to vote for your choice.  Wishing death to Obama is dangerous and uncivilized.
This endorsement will of course be of more value in neighboring New Hampshire. Most New Hampshire voters are more aligned with the views of the Boston Globe than the DMR. However, please note DMR had nothing negative to say about Barack. DMR is simply being dull and predictable like the debates they sponsor
I have just started to read and write on the web.  My question is why would Hillary Clinton even think about running for President.  I think every American thinks that the present administration is terrible.  Think now about why such a person as Mr. Bush even got into office.  Was it not because of the shame that the Clintons brought to the office of President.
President Clinton, and his behavior opened the door for what we now have.  Why would anyone want to bring that behavior back to the White House.
Senator Obama, lacks exprience, but he brings something that the nations needs to believe in itself.  Personally I think that the team of John Edwards, for President and Senator Obama for Vice-President would be wonderful.  I truly think that with these two men the nation would heal and once again become the great nation that we once were.
Wow, reading Kan Chan and Richard Rogers, I feel really happy that I spent so much time in college educating myself. It also reassures me of the outright ignorance of some of the voting public. The fact that these folks are at all interested in politics frightens me. Madison was correct, "The masses are asses!"
Why is there no mention of Ron Paul in the media(???)...including MSN, CNN, and all the other shams????  There was a man who went into Egypt who did know.... Um, Um, Um, big trouble...
Wow, Richard Rodgers, I can't believe you signed your name.  You just showed the world how ignorant and bigoted you are.  Everything you said is totally made up.  Please take your meds and ask the doc to increase your anti-hate pills.
Gentle men i like Obama ,let him climb the tallest tree.
Go Obama!

BTW, checkout the "inexperienced" myth:

http://jaydiatribe.blogspot.com/2007/03/barack-obamas-inexperience.html
RAH,

Always remember something...Never engage in intellectual battle with an unarmed person. Our intellectually bankrupt friend from San Diego is clearly also emotionally disturbed.

It is also fairly clear that Mr. Obama is intellectually, and morally, prepared to lead. His question mark comes with "experience". This question is fairly easily overcome by the surrounding of himself with solid, exposed advisors who temper his hopes with the sad realities of people in the world like Richard Rodgers, whose death while sad, would be beneficial to the evolution of the species.  This particularly if he failed to procreate, and pass his social virus to any offspring prior to his demise.
RULE #1:  DO NOT VOTE FOR ANYONE WHO VOTED TO GIVE BUSH CARTE BLANCHE FOR THE IRAQ WAR!

Experience means nothing when your experience included being involved in the single most foreign policy decision the US has ever made in the last 150 years!

Edwards...in 2004, when asked given what you now know about WMD, would you have voted for war:  "Yes".

2006 as polls dropped in support for the war, now he's against it.

Billary?  "I take responsibility for that vote"  NO S**T SHERLOCK!  who doesn't?  You were an accomplice to the war that killed hundreds of thousands.

Clinton should be impeached from the Senate.  Just like Biden and Dodd who also voted for it (too late for one-term Edwards).
No one has presidential experience.  When they speak of experience as it relates to Washington politics they're talking about. "wheeling and dealing" to "grease" each other's fortunes.  Corporate america has had a "field day" at the public trough under this administration all at the expense of the American people.  Politicians want to boast of experience; overseeing a divided country; fighting a "war" based on lies straight from the oval office; a prosperous people with no sensible health care; bailing out corporations whose success is supposed to be market driven; education system on the skids; can't keep up with people enetering illegally; etc.  The Clinton's are a gulity party too.  Those with years of experience in Washington are a part of our nations systemic problems.  Experience to know how to keep doing what they are doing which is to screw the American people.  The only thing holding this country together is that "war" for oil and the fear of more war.  A terrible way for a free people to live in the hands of EXPERIENCE.
The potential for change in America is refreshing! After all that Americans have been through the past six years, we got a chance to move our country in the right direction with these candidates. Excellent endorsements.

Someone might remind richard that there was an administration that had people that had plane crashes and suicides not so long ago.  there are many of us still out here that vote for the right thing, not always the right party.
This Texan supports OBAMA!!!!
It's time for Obama! Hillary Clinton had a chance to live in the white house--she needs to give someone else a chance.
About Mcain. My son says Mccain wants to be president so he can have a presidential funeral
I believe all those that support Obama are black, mexxican or brainless.he is all talk and no substance and a liar.he has lied in his Book about his life in New Yorkhe went to Columbia University. he never lived in a slum.
