Bill lets loose in interview

Posted: Monday, December 17, 2007 10:30 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Abby Livingston

“Probably, just to get a political story and get a fight going, somebody will watch this interview and parse everything I said,” said the 42nd president Friday night on Charlie Rose. What? Never!

In the hour-long interview, Bill Clinton downplayed Hillary’s chances in Iowa, citing her competitors’ strengths in the state. He noted Edwards’ history in Iowa. He also commented on Obama’s home state of Illinios’ proximity to Iowa, neglecting to mention that his wife was raised in suburban Chicago. “So my view of this is that I never thought she had a big lead in Iowa and never thought she could have one.”

Bill Clinton was on the prowl last night, and he was after Obama and the press.  He made a litany of criticisms toward Obama, but diverging from Clinton campaign strategist Mark Penn, Clinton made no mention of cocaine. He did, however, bring up Kinder-gate with no prompting from Rose. Clinton claimed that the controversy began because Obama was quoted making a “fairly derisive and obvious comment about Hillary saying, you know, she had some decades-old plan to be president, repeating this total canard.”

“He kept repeating this totally fabricated account from this anti-Hillary book that she had this decades-long plan to be president,” Clinton continued. “As if it were something bad…And so on her website, they put up reports from people who worked for Senator Obama that he was planning to run for president when he first got to the Senate, then he was planning it in the state Senate, and then they put the kindergarten letter in. They thought it was funny.”

Clinton felt that the press played into the Obama side of the story, saying, “He just got a few stenographers to write stories about the- as if this kindergarten letter was serious.”

It is clear that the months of Obama’s veiled criticisms of the Clinton administration are getting under Bill Clinton’s skin. “If you listen to the people who are most strongly for him,” Clinton said, “they say basically we have to throw away all these experienced people because they have been through the wars of the '90s.”

Later, he followed up with, “That’s sort of a superficial, you know, bigotry. That’s like saying ageism or something. It’s like you fought and did good things, we got to give you a gold watch and tell you goodbye.”

Clinton also sees little similarity between his own changing of the generational guard campaign of 1992 and that of Obama’s current campaign. Clinton perceives stark differences in both the candidates and the times. “Unlike 1992 when I ran,” he said, “I don’t think security can ever get completely into the background.”

And in Bill Clinton’s worldview, Obama is just not experienced with security. He elaborated on the age similarities during their runs for the White House. “But remember, in 1992,” he said, “when I was just 46-years-old, I was also the senior governor in America…I had been doing it for a very long time. And I had also extensive international economic experience because of my economic development efforts.”

Although Clinton “gets tickled” watching Obama, he feels it is simply not Obama’s turn, stating that Obama is “somebody who started running for president a year after he became a senator because he's fresh, he's new, he's never made a mistake, and he has massive political skills.”

Clinton also referenced his own early career in the 1988 campaign. “And I, even when I was a governor and young and thought I was the best politician in the Democratic Party,” he said, “I didn't run the first time. I could have….I had lots of Democratic governors encouraging me to. I knew in my bones I shouldn't run, that I was a good enough politician to win, but I didn't think I was ready to be president.”

He even went so far as to say a vote for Obama is “rolling the dice.” “In theory, we could find someone who is a gifted television commentator…and let them run,” Clinton said. “They’d only have one year less experience in national politics…I don’t want to be flippant here. There are a lot of people who honestly believe what you have done for other people in your public life…is completely irrelevant, but what matters is what you symbolize.”

Wearing his strategist hat, Clinton said he believes Hillary’s embattled history is a strength in the general. He said that the Republican trend of attacking his wife is attributable to the fact that “they think she would be the hardest to beat because she has been vetted and because she consistently does better with the Republicans as they get to know her.”

Clinton countered Obama's argument that experience got the nation into the war in Iraq. "I remember the first time Senator Obama said that, said, you know, 'Cheney and Rumsfeld had a lot of experience,’” Clinton said. “And that has great superficial appeal. But let me make the argument in another context. That's like saying that because 100 percent of the malpractices case, medical malpractice, are committed by doctors, the next time I need surgery, I'll get a chef or a plumber to do it. I mean, the logical extension of that is inherently absurd."

Earlier in the fall, Hillary Clinton made use of the Harry Truman quote, “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.” And she even unveiled the slogan “Turn up the heat” at the Iowa J-J Dinner. This time around, however, it was her husband turning up the heat.

I think deep down, Bill doesn't want Hillary to win, because that'll mean having to see his wife in the same chair he had Monica smoke a cigar in.
Bill Clinton's decline from the party's elder statesman to partisan hack may be the saddest thing about this primary season.
I really liked Bill during the '90s. Yes he had many personal issues, but generally he was good for the country. His behavior though during Hillary's campaign, it looks like he's in need of some professional consoling.
Here goes MSNBC - Can we just stick to reporting on candidates and not their partners - unless of course you are going to come out with stories today about Michele and Elizabeth? But something tells me you wont -
Thank you Mr. Farcas.  I usually detest going there, but you did it beautifully.
Bill stays on the prowl every night, what a good descripition.  Bill is the one who pardonded hundreds of criminals, terrosists, and drug dealers for hundreds of thousands of dollars, and used his power as president to molest a young intern with a cigar, so who cares what he says.  I cant believe the blacks support them over Obama who they play dirty politics against.  Those of you that support them makes me wonder about you. Sorry.
The Clintons are sounding so unbelievably PARANOID about Obama it’s ridiculous. I’m sure many of you saw President Clinton’s interview on Friday’s episode of Charlie Rose. If you didn’t here’s the link to the video (http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video_log/2007/12/bill_clinton_on_charlie_rose.html).

In addition to all the other crap that Clinton spewed, he said that Obama got the press to write “stories” about Hillary’s attack of Obama’s kindergarten writing and that Obama made the press treat that little joke as if they were “serious”. Give me a break! The Clinton campaign sent that Obama oppo email to the press directly. Obama didn’t have anything to do with that. The press and the blogs jumped on that story before Obama and his team even had a chance to respond. Billo is such a LIAR.
Why did you leave out the good parts, Bill also said:

During an interview on PBS' "The Charlie Rose Show," the former president said that those who accuse him of favoritism towards his wife "have got it all wrong, because, you know, Charlie, I've pretty much lived my entire life as if I wasn't married to her at all."

Being a president is a lot like being a thousand-dollar-a-night call girl, Charlie," he said. "Experience matters."

He probably knows....
Crank up the heat, A few facts.

What is a Washington self serving Paper Hanger "Clinton"

Voting conjecture

Needless self serving bonds to be paid for by the tax payer

A better self serving agenda which will increase your tax"s

A failed congress past and present

Sending a Washington self serving Paper hanger to the White House will insure continued failure!!

This country has been stripped of its moral being, unity, industrial work place, infrastructure security, world standing and this has demeaned what American was built upon.

Man, I used to kind of like Bill, but he is getting downright scary. He kind of freaks me out and seems like a loose-cannon now.
I greatly respect President Clinton, but the least he could do in this campaign is remain intellectually honest. He keeps saying that Obama has "1 year" of national experience. Well, actually by the time the first votes are cast, Obama will have 3 years in the US Senate. Mrs. Clinton will have 7 years. Is this really the best way for him to make the case for his wife?
'...a vote for Obama is “rolling the dice.”...'

But with Hillary you KNOW you'll get more scandals With Hillary you'll get fund raising 'irregularities'

With Hillary you'll get a smear campaign

Most importantly, with Hillary you KNOW you'll get a deadlocked government and partisan infighting

Turn up the heat ?

what goodwill are you talking about him letting the terrosists run all over us, and left Bush in a recession.
http://newsbusters.org/blogs/mark-finkelstein/2007/12/17/gregory-grilling-turns-hillary-grin-upside-down

GREGORY: But rolling the dice. What does rolling the dice mean? We know what the Register said.

Ouch!

HILLARY: Well, but I think that's one of the principal cases for my candidacy. If you want to know what changes I'll make, look at the changes that I have already made.

Gregory was intractable.

GREGORY: But what's the risk of an Obama presidency?

HILLARY [the ire in her voice rising]: Everybody talks about change. Everybody talks about change in this campaign. Some people think you get change by demanding it [John Boy]. Some think you get it by hoping for it [hear me, Barack?]. I think you get it by doing really hard work. And that's what I've done.

GREGORY: Senator, you're not really addressing this question, though. Your husband said it would be rolling the dice for America's future if he were elected. What is the risk to America if Barack Obama is the president?

HILLARY: You know, he not only said that, but the Des Moines Register editorial implied that [enough with the Register already!] And a lot of people are making up their minds among real candidates, not abstractions, not hypotheticals. And I welcome that scrutiny. I welcome that kind of examination of our records, our experience, our qualifications, our vision for the country. That's what elections are about. You know, this is --

   GREGORY: OK, but you're --

HILLARY: This is what elections are as you move toward decision making.

GREGORY: OK, so you're choosing not to answer that question. Let me ask you another issue that has to do --
Bill Clinton is the best Bill Clinton impersonator I have ever seen! lol

P.S. I still love him (maybe not trust him - lol) - he's an American original!
$1,000/night call girl? Did he really say that or is that parody?

MARK YOU RESPECT BILL CLINTON   READ HIS PARDONS  AND APO
LIGIZE  OR DO YOU RESPECT HIS PERVERSUASION?
I long for the days when Bill was our president.  The current idiot in chief is a total embarrassment.  We need Hillary back in the white house! Now!
Again, nothing bu horse race style coverage to be found.  Nevermind that one of Obama's major initiatives in the Senate just went online, a website that opens up the government's books to public scrutiny.  Setting aside Bill's meltdown, voters can look for themselves at the candidates experience.  Obama's entire legislative career has been built on delivering change, especially on the issue of making government more open, democratic, and accountable.

I got fixed why didn't Bill?  Hey, Socks why did the Clinton's give you away when they left the White House?
Everything Bill Clinton said in this interview about the Press and how they handle Hillary as compared to Obama, is correct.  I guarentee the only good story you will see about Hillary this week in the press is her endorsment from the Des Moines Registered.  I will bet every story other than that will be negative and I bet you will not find one negative story about Obama.

Anyone who thinks Hillary's camp was being serious about Obama saying he wanted to be President in Kindergarten, is an idiot.  Yet, I have seen plenty of you on these blogs repeat it like she was serious.
Hey david from texas...do you respect the perversion (thats how its spelled hillbilly)of the rudy and judi show or how newt was sleeping with another woman while his own wife was in the hospital AND he was persecuting clinton, or how the reps in congress protected and approved of mark foley and larry craig? I doubt it
"I welcome that kind of examination of our records, our experience, our qualifications, our vision for the country. That's what elections are about. You know, this is "

Is Senator Clinton bipolar or is she claiming someone else's presidency? Hmmmmmmmm . . . . .
Hillary is unwilling to state what she sees as the real danger of electing Obama.  I'm tired of politicians who refuse to answer questions.  I find it hard to credit her with the experience of her husband's presidency and that's what she is claiming.  In my opinion Obama is smart enough to figure out what to do when he id president.
"I welcome that kind of examination of our records, our experience, our qualifications, our vision for the country. That's what elections are about. You know, this is "

Fine, let's start with those records you won't let anyone see in your warehouse in Little Rock......
why is it that so little time is given to edwards from the media in comparison to hillary and obama? edwards sounded somewhat upset about the dmr endorsement.
MITT SORRY I DIDNT SPELL PERVUSAION RIGHT I STILL DONT ITS A DEMOCRAT WORD AND IM NOT FAMILIAR WITH IT, AND IM NOT A GULLIANI MAN EITHER, GIMME ME A BREAK.  iM AN INDEPENDENT GOING FOR YOUR NEXT PRESIDENT HUCKABEE, DIDNT YOU KNOW ITS OVER HE HAS WON.  bY WAY GO TO CLINTONS PARDONS AND LOOK IN MIRROR
Anyone who thinks Hillary's camp was being serious about Obama saying he wanted to be President in Kindergarten, is an idiot.  Yet, I have seen plenty of you on these blogs repeat it like she was serious.
Stopwatchingfoxnews, Rochester, NY (Sent Monday, December 17, 2007 11:15 AM)

Seriously, I would hope that they were serious and made a mistake in judgement then to think that they wasted time and issued press releases on their website based on a "joke". I mean I am sorry there are more important issues that they could have spent that time talking about.
Yiannis: That is possibly the most telling exchange I've seen yet. Clinton doesn't want to actually continue to talk about her campaign's own smears once they've been put out there--they're supposed to just wallow in people's minds without any facts to limit them.

Clinton IS Bush Lite. If you can't see that, then please don't vote. Thank you.
Why do I get the impression that Bill & Hill believe that we the people owe them something? Somebody please explain this to me please.
Now i know why conservatives hate Clinton so much... Bill Clinton need some help.
If Obama was so much worried about the direction this country is taking, he should not have missed the Iran Revolutionary guard vote. He has the "I am smarter than you" attitude and seriously, he does not have the respect for other statesmen in the capital. If he gets elected, these are the very same people he would need to work with. He may be smarter than most of the people, but he still has got a long way to go before he reaches the heights of Bill Clinton, because whatever the people say, 90s are still the best years the americans had, and I still would take one Bill over 20 Obamas any day- sex sccandal and all included.
Bill i right, vote for Obama will be the biggest mistaked like Bush. Go Hillary
Bill Clinton is acting a little strange about Obama.   He is doing an attack on his character.   That seems to be beneath him.   What are they worried about, Hillary is still ahead in the National polls, and she has all of the top endorsements.  So why is the ex-President out there so early doing and saying nagative things about the other candidates so early in the game before even the first vote is cast.   Shouldn't Hillary be out there now speaking for herself?

Everyone made a big deal of a few appearances by Oprah.  Bill is out there everyday for Hillary.  Is that not the same thing as a mega star on stomp?
And this is why I never wanted to Hillary to run...PERIOD.  I was always afraid of the "Clinton Bashing" starting all over again.  It kinda reminds me of that line when I take some verbal abuse at work sometimes.  My mother always reminds me that when the higher ups like you....it makes the other co-workers crazy.  In other words...you take a lot of heat when you are doing a good job.

I agree that Bill opens his mouth too much sometimes, but I am still of the opinion that love him or hate him, he is one of the most articulate and intelligent political geniuses of our time.
Did Bill really say those things?  If he  actually said  any of that stuff about living as if he wasn't married at all, $1000 hookers, etc. then  either he has completely lost it or he really DOESN'T want HRC to be President and have to live under close scrutiny again.

If that's his secret plan, good.  Considering his pal Andrew Young's remarks about Clinton having had more black women than Obama, he must be in on it, too.   Anything that saves the Dems from the folly of running HRC is a good thing for Dems. Hope it works, Bill and Andy.
Jeremy, Iowa City, IA ,

Thanks for that link; perhaps, we should refer Billary Clinton to the site. I was also told that Bill Clinton has been involved in using tax cut loopholes to ship money to Cayman Islan
Dante, You are exactly right.  Obviously the Obama wanted to be a President in Kindergarten was a joke, but because it happened to be a slow news week when that came out, the press ran with it to try and bash Hillary, when they knew it was a joke.  Instead of talking about each others policy differences, the press just likes to get the candidates to fight with each other, which is a real disservice to the rest of us who are trying to figure out who to vote for based on the critical issues, not when Obama and Hillary decided when they wanted to be president.
Its really kinda sad to read these words spoken by Bill Clinton.

On a very personal level, during this past summer when I was collecting sginatures to put Barack Obama on the Virginia Primary Ballot, it was such a pleasure for me to only speak FOR Obama as my choice.

Apparently, our ex-president is having some trouble finding things to say FOR Hillary's campaign and therefore concentrates and on things AGAINST her closest opponent.
On the Kindergarten comment:
Does ANYONE believe Bill (or the slimy Mark Penn, Hillary's campaign manager who said the same "this was a joke" last week)?

Of course they were serious about the comment.  Or at least they would have been if it had not turned into a boomerang on them.  But now, instead of admitting they made a mistake, they try to lie their way out of it.  Just as when Hillary was exposed as a pander-bear in the Philly debate, her campaign's response was to attack the moderator.

America deserves better.
Hurry on over, for a peaksie.. hillaryclinton.com
Hey, StopwatchingFoxNews, Hillary still has the "kindergate" memo posted on her website.  If she wasn't serious about it, I'm sure they would have taken it down by now.

Face it, Hillary is not only hated by Independents and Republicans, she is hated by her fellow Democrats, including me!  By the way, I don't consider her a Democrat.  I do not share her pro-war, pro-corporate lobbyist values.
The kindergarten comment seems like a small thing and it's easy for some to dismiss it as "a tiny joke."  The reason is matters is that it's a window into the kind of person Hillary is (win at all costs) and the kind of people she hires (ethics are simply a distraction).   They don't make mistakes.  They are extremely calculating.  They put that comment out there because they thought it would do damage.  It did.  Just not in the direction they had hoped.
No Thnak You Mama - I'm for Obama !

It's time to Rise and Shine again America.
"I welcome that kind of examination of our records, our experience, our qualifications, our vision for the country. That's what elections are about. You know, this is "
Well thats kinda hard when you have them sealed in your Libary. Look I voted for Bill he was the best choice at the time. But it was a still a vote for the lesser of two evils.
To me I never thought I would ever get a chance to vote for someone I actually wanted to win, Obama is that guy. What I think JFK was to my mom's gerneration.
I will admit with Hillary you know what you will get, 4 more years of nothing but partisan bickering, and more political deadlock. Change, yeah a different set of lobbiest will control the government. And do you really think Hillary will give you a transparent government, oh she has been so transparent in the past, but Obama gets alot of reaction with it so lets throw it in too. Actually Hillary does seem to be an agent of Change, she changes her stance to whatever will get her more votes. She is going to sound just like Obama by the end of this.
Now I'm realistic about this, Obama is not God and our government is too set in its ways I doubt Obama can fix it, but he will get it headed down the right path, and if we the people get off our rears and get involved we can make these changes.
So its simple, you like our government the way it is, vote Clinton. You want a government where "we the people" can see what is going on and have a say, Vote Obama!!
"Bill Clinton was on the prowl last night, and he was after Obama and the press."

Domingo Monterro...Journalist! lol

Van
Obama is a much better candidate than Clinton. He will be a much better president than either Clinton.
bill tells it like it is go bill go because what it will take  to get back the whitehouse  for the dems.
Bill let's loose...is that some kind of reference to gaseous emmisions?  If so, shouldn't this be placed on the subject of global warming?
