Emphasizing Hillary's softer side

Posted: Monday, December 17, 2007 11:40 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
JOHNSTON, IA -- As part of its final push in Iowa, the Clinton campaign held a formal launch for the Web site featuring video “testimonials” from friends, constituents, and others who have known the senator for a long time or been helped by her. The event also included a tearful appeal from a childhood friend.

The second day of Clinton's Iowa tour began in a small barn crammed with people, where a screen hung from one wall, with the “Hillary I Know” videos playing on a loop. Clinton has been spending more time recently talking on the stump about her upbringing, her mother’s life, and her values. And these videos and recent appearances on the trail by her mother and daughter were a clear attempt to show Clinton’s softer side -- something that may be key for early state voters. (Indeed, at a question and answer session at an event in New Hampshire over the weekend, one voter told the senator she came of “cold” and “politically calculating.”)

Among those featured in the videos: Clinton’s childhood friend Betsy Ebeling, supporters like Tom Vilsack and Wes Clark, and a New York mother whose daughter the senator helped get treatment for a brain disease.

Some of the people in the testimonials will be at some of Clinton's Iowa events in the coming days. Ebeling was on hand today at the barn to speak about her relationship with the former first lady. At times near tears, she talked about meeting Clinton in sixth grade. "She's loyal to her friends; she remembers them; she remembers their kids," Ebeling said. "She understands how people feel everywhere."

Ebeling said she had traveled to Iowa with about 25 long-time Clinton friends from across the country to campaign on behalf of the senator.

Clinton came on to speak warmly about the friends here today, and said she wanted to give Iowans a sense of who she is away from the TV cameras, when no one is taking notes. She told a funny story about taking off the thick glasses she had to wear in junior high and high school so that she could catch the eye of one young man or another, and how Ebeling would guide her down hallways pointing out boys to wave and smile at and keeping her from bumping into things.

“What I try to do every day is figure out how to help somebody,” she said. “You can try to help somebody every single day, and I’ve tried to do that as a public servant, as an activist, and now as a senator,” she said, adding she would do the same as president.

She continued with her usual stump speech, sprinkling in references to friends like Ebeling, joking about her weight, arguing that America needed proven leadership, and including -- once again -- her new line about the need to working hard for change. She talked about the coveted Des Moines Register endorsement to applause and said the paper had put her and the other candidates through their paces.

Before Ebeling and Clinton, Jeff Volk spoke. He described himself as an "old Republican conservative" whose family Clinton helped get out of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and described the senator as caring, kind and compassionate. "We need a change in government," Volk said. He said and Clinton shared a concern about competency in government. "I can't think of anyone more prepared."

Another woman, Shannon Mallozzi, the mother from New York, said that before meeting the senator, she had a media-cultivated perception or her. "I thought she was a bit remote. I didn't know who she was," Mallozzi said.

Hmmmmm

Lots of New Yorkers.....
A couple of Northeasterners........
Some folks from Arkanasas........

And a former Iowa governor who got his loan paid off by the Clinton's........

A good mix of people.....
from people who know her (supposedly)

Bet the internet isn't big enough to hold all the people who can tell the other side of her.....
This election is not about ""YOUR MOTHER"", No one gives a whoot in hell about family affairs.

I'm Pissed as this foray of stupid dialogue moves futher off base. The Media is totally irresponsible for posting such garbage!!

The issue is who shall be the next President, not underlined subject matter. No wonder the lunatic gender race is a factor, no wonder this self serving paper hanger is part of a failed congress!!

Far be it, that this clown continues a path for which she is totally not quaified to serve!!!

Don't you wonder where those negative stereotypes were created and promoted? Hi FR! I again remind you of the wonderful hatchet job the fourth estate did on Al Gore.
He was cold, aloof, and a self-aggrandizing in 2000. Aren't we all fortunate that the, "likable", guy won?

It's funny that Hillary has to have others tell about her "softer" side rather then her showing it herself. Kind of like it takes Bill to tell us about her experience, and her spin team to tell us what she really meant to say during debates, and her campaign team planting the "right" questions in her audiences. Hillary is nothing but a puppet for her handlers. Get enough people pulling the right strings, and Hillary sometimes almost looks real.
Clinton has been spending more time recently talking on the stump about her upbringing, her mother’s life, and her values.

Guess she gave up on her campaign platform....
I guess you don't need 5 answers when talking about Mom.
I love Hillary's softer side, all of her!
I saw Hillary's softer side on today's show and all i can say is this "She is horrible". I don't want to see her on my TV for the next 4 years.
Seems to me Senator Clinton is in a no-win situation on this one.  If she shows a side that is too "soft' she will get accused of not being able to stand up to the big guys from other countries.   If she remains cool and controlled she is accused of being cold and calculating. What to do?
If I knew then what I know now I would have preferred Gore in the chair during 9-11. It would have been fun to watch Gore and Clinton finger point at each other over whose fault it was. We would probably be running Jeb for a 2nd term now, and both of those clowns (Clinton and Gore) would be completely off the world stage.
This is a little off target, but it goes to show you what extremes Liberals will go to to make sure Americans pay taxes, no matter how rich or poor you are......

SF Considers a Tax on Sugary Drinks

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- For years, the idea of taxing soda to beat back obesity has been tossed around in medical circles. But now, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is proposing a tax on beverages high in fructose corn syrup.

Newsom says obesity accounts for tens of millions of dollars in city health care costs. He cites a recent San Francisco Health Department survey that found nearly a quarter of the city's 5th, 7th and 9th graders were overweight and that high sugar drinks make up a tenth of a kid's daily calorie count.

Newsom reportedly wants all big box retailers and chain drug stores to pay into his new "Shape up San Francisco" program, which started this past summer with a walking regimen.

This comes as the state of California is considering slapping caffeine-infused sodas, and energy drinks with warning labels, saying consumption can contribute to diabetes.
Van says:[ . . . Al Gore. He was cold, aloof, and a self-aggrandizing in 2000.]

Isn't it nice to see that somethings never change?
I don't want to see her on my TV for the next 4 years.

Bee (Sent Monday, December 17, 2007 12:13 PM)

I agree with you (spelling)Bee; I want to see her for NINE more years. I'm glad that we AGREE!

Van
(I'm feeling very Nelson Muntz today!)
Three Jerry's and a Bee. They're like, "panic detectors", the more they panic, the more they post. Must be a real good day for Hillary! lol

Van
(Ha Ha!)
Bee, there's a simple solution - try turning the channel. But then what would you have to complain about ad nauseum.  Stick to your soap operas and Oprah - that's where you get your "real" news.

HILLARY '08`
It is quite unfortunate to see Hillary Clinton outsource her softer side argument. Thank God she didn't outsource it to the Chinese.
I am very pleased with the softer side of Hillary.  However, how sexist is it to even talk about that.  The MSM doesn't talk about the softer side of the male candidates?  Male candidates are not supposed to be soft [no pun intended] or else they're sissy's.  Hillary is a woman with many gifts and I hope she shares them all with us as our next president!
Hillary's 'softer' side came a few weeks after her 'fun' side

When we saw her 'fun' side, there were smears against Obama being a Muslim terrorist
When we saw her 'fun' side, there were smears about Obama and cocaine

Just an advertising campaign
(tastes great ! less filling !)

Would you buy as used car from Hillary ?

Do you think Hillary is soft and warm or cold and calculating ?

Who are Hillary's real friends ?
Campaign contributors ?
Lobbyists ?

Hillary Clinton, cold, calculating, dishonest, unethical, divisive
When a Republican is cold and calculating, it's seen as some sort of John Wayne-ism. When a Democrat does it, they get into territory, the GOP assumes is reserved for them. Can't label Democrats as warm and tree-huggin' and then have them show true grit, now, can they? Careful what you project.
NO MORE CLINTON'S........

Dynasties belong in sports...

Anyone but Hillary Clinton.
Senator Clinton got absolutely creamed during her TODAY show interview.  Take a look it wasn't pretty, and will remind exactly why they had qualms with the Clintons.
Pat, Huntington, NY

I also wondered why this topic was news.  Male candidates aren't asked to show either their masculinity or their softer side.  Why should this topic pertain only to Senator Clinton?
Van,
Thank God you don't have to make that decision for America. I don't want to see this face in my living room but you do. Sorry Van, this face is too scary for me, check it out your self.

Hey Paul and van its nice to see that Clinton is now finally opening offices in all of Iowa's counties.  Unfortunately it is something she should have done five or six months ago.  The reason --- you have to have reps out there meeting, persuading, and identifying potential caucus goers for your candidate.  You guys just people in the field now?  Those potential caucus goers have already been meet with, persuaded by, and identified with rival campaigns.  But it nice to see Clinton wasting her money and her effort.  Come Jan. 3 she is toast --- third or fourth place (heck before the DMR endorsement she was planning on leaving Iowa and focusing her energies on NH).  She has neither the organization nor the energy that the other candidates have.  Deep down you know this.  But if you want to put up a false facade of confidence that's fine too.

Just look at this blog!  Hillary Clinton and "likable" go together about as well as a cow-pie and a warm bagel...
So basically Hillary was telling a story about *herself* was one of deception- trying to impress the boys in her school with an "image" of herself that was not accurate!

If I were her, I would have picked a different story to reminisce about!  Maybe one where she was actually honest and candid!
The republican candidates all have soft sides...heck most of them have loved many women, sometimes all at the same time...the softies

circus. C'mon, politicians trot out their Mom's like the Horse Breeder trotted out Secretariat's Mom. To show the Bloodline, eh? What have you got against Mom's? My Mom was a Mom. So was yours. And if you've ever trotted her out to show the Bloodline, you might have a career in Politics. Her, too.

jerry: it turns out we have a BIG budget deficit in SF
Mayor Newsome didn't reveal it until AFTER he was re-elected.....

Our big change is banning plastic bags...
I have nowhere to put my trash.....

Help me Hillary !!!
Bee, NH

The Drudge Report? Surely you can do better than that! Isn't there something you could dig up from Fox Noise - they usually have something about every half hour anti-Clinton.

Whatever will you do with all your spare time when Obama hits the skids???!!! Perhaps you could volunteer for some worthy charity?

p.s. vanreuter, NY, NY....it's always a pleasure to read someone's post based on fact as opposed to the shill rantings of morons!
Obama campaign caught with their own plant.

An Obama plant caught asking him a question on S.S. taxed.   So far only one major network is on it.

I like the fact I heard Barack Obama just say that the Bible and God are part of his "values"...

That sounds too familiar with the guy in 2004 who said he was picked by God himself to lead this country...

Religion has torn this country apart; and we have people here who don't seem to mind that we have a candidate who would further that self-implosion...

Tisk, Tisk....
Hey Jerry in Corpus. Just wondering...what do you do in your spare time or like...do you have a job?
This seems politically shrewd. She is already known as strong and stolid, so why not try to emphasize her emotional side as well? She probably should have started these efforts earlier, however. Unknown if it'll have much impact in the early contests, though I think it unlikely.
A WOMENS SOFTER SIDE <HOW ABOUT A STORY OBAMAS BLACKER SIDE THAT IS JUST STUPID THE WHOLE THING IS STUPID YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH.WHAT ARE YOU ACCUSING HILLIARY OIOF NOW?
Yeah, we see how great it worked out when people voted in the "guy they'd most like to have a beer with"

Besides, have any of you Hillary-bashers ever actually seen her in person at any of these smaller events?  I have and if you've been reading the reporting of people who've actually seen her in person, as opposed to those who see her on TV or only 'hear' about her appearance, they all say: "She's so much nicer and quieter than I thought she'd be"
But on the subject of the very ral double standard, why is it fair that a man who is definite, determined, ambitious and even perhaps, a bit loud in discussion due to his passion for the argument something to be admired, but if a woman acts the EXACT SAME WAY, she is "shrill", "bitchy", "insecure" and "a probable lesbian"?????

Could it possibly be that it's really all these people critiquing her so baselessly who haven't mastered their insecurities?
Three questions for the Obamaphiles and the Hillary haters who comment on this blog:

1.  How many persons can you name who have personally  met Hillary on the campaign trail that are against her?  [The correct answer is NONE].

2.  Exactly what (I mean EXACTLY) changes, in either Illinois or in the U. S. Senate, has Obama accomplished or been largely responsible for?  [The correct answer is ZERO].

3.  How many of you actually live in "Blue" or "Purple" states?  [The correct answer is FEW--just look at Jerry from Texas, a wholly Red state].

Face it folks, Obama never accomplished nor has he been largely responsible for ANY policy changes in his entire (short as it's been) political career in either Illinois or in the Senate--he's a political neer-do-well similar to a so-so high school quarterback trying out his luck in the NFL--an amateur trying to put his personality, not experience or accomplishments, into the big leagues  [just for the heck of it, try to answer question #2, above--good luck!].

BTW, Hillary is still neither my first or second choice, yet I must admit the chances of my ## 1 & 2 are looking slim.

The bottom line is that Hillary Clinton is a divisive political figure.  And I for one do not want to go through another 8 years of the bitching & complaining & fighting & finger pointing we saw during the Clinton and Bush presidencies.  We need to start having the Democrats and Republicans working together in Washington and realize that compromise does not mean weakness nor surrender.

The candidate who I think has the best chance to get both parties working together is Barack Obama.
What a joke this woman is....
Besides, have any of you Hillary-bashers ever actually seen her in person at any of these smaller events?

She hasn't come here yet.....
Of course we don't have a lot of chinese dishwashers...
So I doubt she will come here....
1.  I don't care whether Hillary is likable or not.  It is precisely those things that everyone hates about her that will make her a great president.
2. Can someone please tell me why it makes sense that Obama is portrayed is the anti-Hillary when it comes to likability?  I understand he is a wonderful orator, but in debates and interviews he is completely underwhelming, has no personality, and gives answers that are just as canned as any politician's.

How does this make sense and how can you not say this is about sexism over racism?  When Bill was in power the thought was "Too much Hillary.  She has too much power" and now that she is running the thought is, "she had no influence or meaningful experience during those years."  Which is it, people?
Pat according to Jennifer Flowers book she shares lots of things with women and Bill doesnt care. Maybe you can hook up.

Since you’re from Michigan, your vote doesn’t count in the primary; however,  I'll suggest you do a little research and stop been intellectually lazy

I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me!
Ivan, Washington;

Please tell us just what, EXACTLY, Hillary has DONE to make herself divisive.  Certainly, because she's a woman makes her divisive to male chauvinists, and because her last name is Clinton makes her divisive to Republicans and Republican leaning independants, but, PLEASE inform us as to just what, EXACTLY, she has done or said to make her a "divisive" candidate.  I'll bet a ton that neither you nor any other commentator to this blog can conger a cogent answer to that question.

Hillary better get the name of John Kerry's Botox doctor. Looks like they're going to have to order a couple of gallons to clean her up.
Stu, Saginaw, MI,

How about the language she uses? Language like, right wing conspiracy, Turn up the heat on the republican, Republicans are evil...e.t.c
