The DLC and Joe Lieberman

Posted: Monday, December 17, 2007 12:04 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
With the news that Joe Lieberman (I) today backed McCain's presidential bid, the Democratic Leadership Council -- a group Lieberman once chaired -- issued this statement, courtesy of DLC founder and CEO Al From: "I am very saddened by Senator Lieberman's choice, and profoundly disagree with it. We need to elect a Democratic president in 2008."

But From and the DLC, critics would point out, didn't think it was important to elect a Democratic Connecticut senator back in 2006. From and key DLC aides supported -- and also worked on -- Lieberman's independent Senate bid, after Ned Lamont bested him in last year's Democratic primary. Lieberman went on to defeat Lamont and Republican Alan Schlesinger in the general election.

So why oppose Lieberman endorsing McCain -- but support Lieberman's independent candidacy a year ago? From, through a spokeswoman, gave this statement to First Read: "In 2006, Joe Lieberman ran in the primary as a Democrat and in the general as an independent Democrat, who said he would vote with the Democrats for control of the Senate. That's far different than supporting a Republican candidate for president." The DLC spokeswoman added that From's statement was his personal remarks, not the DLC's.

*** UPDATE *** And you knew this was coming -- Lamont weighs in with his own statement. "During our debate last year, Senator Lieberman intoned that he wanted to 'elect a Democratic President in 2008,' and that my election would 'frustrate and defeat our hope of doing that.' With his endorsement of John McCain today, it is now clear that Joe Lieberman is the one working to defeat our hopes."

More Lamont: "Last year, Senator Lieberman pleaded with voters to consider his full throated support for the invasion of Iraq as merely a 'single issue' in the context of an otherwise progressive agenda. His endorsement of Senator McCain reminds us that the war in Iraq is actually Lieberman's predominant issue, trumping all else -- or maybe he is looking forward to joining Sen. McCain in a duet rendition of 'Bomb, Bomb, Iran'... With voters just weeks away from making their first decisions, Democrats are lucky to have many extraordinary candidates running for President. I am disappointed that Senator Lieberman does not feel the same way."

Zionist politicians who have infested our political system and derailed our democracy to befit only Israeli interests are true snakes in the grass for all Americans...they do not care about our housing, our economy or our education, they only care about Israel. Israel wants us to start a new war, no matter how much it costs us, this time against Iran. That is why Liebermann, the Israeli proxy is endorsing McCain. It was McCain who agressively sang bomb, bomb, bomb Iran.
As an ardent supporter of Israel, Joe Leiberman has no choice but to support a pro-Iraq War candidate; someone who will continue America's belligerent Middle East policy, much to the detriment of American citizens and taxpayers.  Unfortunately, our politicians will never criticize America's costly pro-Israel policies, for fear of the very powerful Israeli lobby. Howard Dean spoke out about Israel and look how quickly his political life was over.  How it is in America's best interest to financially and militarily support a racist Zionist state in the Middle East.  Joe Leiberman's odd switch to the right makes perfect sense.  Remember McCain's weird rendition of the Beach Boys song, "Barbara Ann" ? ? ... "Bomb, bomb, bomb,. .  bomb, bomb, Iran".  Can you see what's coming next if McCain is elected? . . or for that matter Romney, Huckabee or Saint Rudy of 9/11.
Wasn't there a guy with that name who was a democratic senator?

Van
So digusted with the Senator from CT. Like McCain he's a Bush man.
I don't think Joe Lieberman thinks much past protecting Isreal. I for one am glad he is no longer a Democrat. He'll blow up the Middle East to protect Isreal.
JOE wanted in again and would say anything not to lose his health care and access to pages,So he got behind a tough guy like macain doesn't joe support TORTURE though hows that square. .BENIDICK ARNOLD.
When the Democrats take the Whhite House and increase their majority in the senate in 2008, old Joe will get his long awaited invitation to get the hell out. He blew the debate to Cheney in 2000 and now he's blowing it again. Way to go Joe...... a true Republican
Hillary needs to come out against Joe Lieberman immediately. If she does so she could crush some of the momentum of Obama and reaffirm some support from the left. If she does not take Lieberman on then she should have to answer if he could be a candidate for VP. This guy, the DLC, and all other Blue dog capitulating Democrats need to be replaced with real, progressive Dems who aren't afraid to stand up to special interests.

I bet you that Edwards makes a statement, and that is why he is the favorite of the real Democratic Party. Obama won't say anything and can't. If played effectively (i.e. John all over TV repudiating this thing) then this could be the move Edwards uses to lock up Iowa.
lol at the Republicans not supporting minorities, lets check on that. Do we know why Republicans do not hold the Black and LGBTT vote? Yeah, we do. It goes back to M.L. King Jr for the black votes, LBJ basically bought him off to support the Democrats to keep supporters out of jail (read Dr Shelby and then look into who got King out of jail and on what conditions, it isn't black and white, so read in between the lines). The Dixiecrats though began to convert to the Republican Party after that, weakening a VERY pro-civil rights party. These converts do not represent the Republicans and most of us want them out, elections be damned.

But lets not forget that a prominent Democrat was in charge of the KKK. Lets also remember that GW has had more minorities in his cabinet than any other president in history (even the “I marched with Dr King” Clintons).

The LGBTT vote is a not a big surprise. The religious right does not believe they should be allowed to marry, etc. It’s their right to think so, wrong as it may be. On the other hand, most Republicans would love to have the majority morally and fiscally conservative LGBTT vote as we share many of the same values.

What is comes down to is a fringe element in the GOP that is scaring away the very people we want to join us. The Black community is, for the most part, very conservative and share the same family and social values as we do; it is not socially acceptable YET for them to be labeled Republicans, lest they also be labeled traitors. The same holds true for the LGBTT community. We are seeing more people though coming out and stating that they are conservative. Please argue that point as Liberals are marking J Liberman as a traitor for voicing a different opinion, heaven forbid that you don’t fall in line.

Values can transcend party lines, and while the Neo-Cons have led us down a dark path, those moderates who still hold true to equality and tolerance under conservative tenants will win back this party and restore it to these goals.

Either that, or the Republicans are done, and we will leave the hate monger Neo-Cons to wallow in their own irrelevance.
All I have to say is What was Al Gore thinking picking this loser as his running mate back in 2000?
This endorsement mean that Lieberman is officially a joke. He's gone into Zell Miller territory. Sad that his  desire to march in lockstep with the Israeli government on foreign policy has driven him to the GOP.

I really hope Hillary does win, it will mean the end of BOTH parties as they currently are. We need a fresh start sheeple, maybe a common sense party is in order. The extremes can sit out in their minority controlled universe of nothingness.
Gee what a team: McCain, who is hated by the base for not supporting Bush and the wacko-right ENOUGH and Lieberman who is so joined at the hip with Bush on Iraq that, looking to the general, only the 20 some percent of those who approve of Bush and his handling of the war have any reason to like Lieberman.

Maybe both of these deluded old pols ought to just follow Trent Lott's example and get out while the getting is good.   McCain isn't going to get the nomination much less the White House, much less as an independent with Lieberman as VP.

The Democrats will pick up Senate seats so both will be completely irrelevant there after the election. No matter who gets the White House, it won't be any friend of either of those two. They may as well just get a head start on their lobbying careers. Game over.
Uncle Joe, voted in by Democrats, abrogated his duty to his consitiuants and is now in bed with the Republicans. Now there is a man who's word is not worth anything. Given the honesty of the Republican party he has found a real home. What goes around, comes around.
Indemocrepub? I guess that's J Lieb's New Party. If McCain picks him for VP, he would be the first Indemocrepub candidate to run on the Republican Ticket, and the first to run as a Democrat VP candidate, and then consecutively as a Republican VP candidate. With such a Chameleonic ability, he should consider being in a Geico Ad. He's a shoe-in for the "Wishy-Washy Hall of Fame".
Although I am not a big Lieberman supporter - he's too moralistic and socially conservative for my tastes - most of the attacks on him here emanate from Jew-haters who employ the usual anti-Israel rhetoric and anti "Zionist" nonsense.  Of course the extremist, isolationist kooks of the far left and far right hate Lieberman.  To me, Lieberman's support of the great nation of Israel is a reason to vote FOR him, not against.  No sane, decent American needs to explain why he or she supports Israel against its ongoing struggle against the Islamofascists; instead, it's you - the Internet antisemites - who need to explain why you hate the only democratic nation in the region and America's best friend.  Lieberman isn't the enemy - you are.
I'm getting a tent just reading about it.
Of course you have to get Zev Jabotinsky (who is a moron) saying this...
'No sane, decent American needs to explain why he or she supports Israel '

Sure Zev, nobody needs to explain why we support Israel.
Yep, anybody who questions your superior reasoning is just a Jew hater and an anti semite.

You know what buddy, you suck, and Americans are tired of people like you. Guess what I am going to research and find out why we support Israel. I am going to then make a decision regarding whether or not I think the policies of Israel are in line with what I think American foreign policy should be.

You know why I am going to do these things, because I am an American citizen and not some puppet idiot without a brain who just takes orders like a good nazi.

You watch your mouth son or I'll knock it off, you want to call me an anti semite. You think your tough. How bout a phone number or an address buddy.

It's not antisemetic to not support Israel. We don't have to support Israel. They are lucky we do, and that luck can end whenever we (the American people) decide or want it to. WATCH YOUR MOUTH.
Lieberman, and many zionists alike who have infested and derailed our democracy only to protect Israeli interest to our detriment, need to be exposed as traitors and fascist elements inside our system who are a bigger threat to our way of life than islamofacism has ever been or will be. It is ziofascism that is destroying America...from within and if we do not rid ourselves from these traitors for whom all starts and ends with Israel, they will go on and on with their lies and manipulations untill the US is broke...China will break our back if we keep supporting moribund Israel.
"It's not antisemetic to not support Israel"

Ofcourse not, it is what zionists manipulate us to believe. But thank God there are true jews, humanistic Jews, like at www.nkusa.org, who want us to put an end to Israel. Israel is not in our interest. Israel is dragging us down the drain with itselve. Remember: Israel is born out of terrorism! Terrorism against the British!!
Lieberman continues to embarrass himself. Lamont won the nomination fair and square and of course the party was obligated to support the nominee.  Lieberman lost it by not staying in touch with his voters, and instead of blaming anyone else should take a long hard look at himself.  Which, since he is an angry old man, is incapable of doing.  Hope Conn. voters kick him out the next election.
His name is Kyle-with an E you idiots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't know how Lieberman gets up in the morning and looks at his mug in the mirror.

Undoubtedly, we'll hear from some pundit to verify  the first time EVER a candidate who secured his party's nomination for the Vice Presidency resurfaces 8 years later or, for that matter, any time later to endorse a Presidential candidate from the opposition party.

Since Lieberman's presence in the Democratic caucus has not resulted in even a single vote going the Democrats' way since they gained control of the Senate, I urge Harry Reid to do what needs to be done to any Senator who would sell out his party, and boot Lieberman out of the Democratic Caucus ... NOW!
Lieberman, Lieberman, Lieberman, you have become a symbol of traitorism by zionist politicians who have destroyed our political system by the money politics and lobbyism in Washington. Thanks Lieberman for exposing the zionist fascism that has hijacked our democracy.
That sounds like a ploy to get the dems fired up and to the polls.I have no reason to believe that any of the canidates are to worried about old man Lib.Nationally Hillary poll numbers have not shifted dramatically since MISS O ENDORSED BIG O.If anything it has forced Hillary to send her troups to Iowa in a big way.
Heck, the Democratic candidates crapped on the DLC. Having Leiberman do it too is just icing on the cake.
Lieberman and McCain make a great team, two War-mongers!Lieberman never represented the Democrates
or the people of Connecticut. The Democrates that
supported Lieberman made a big mistake and the Democrates in the progressive state of Connecticut
who votred for him, should have known better. He
should be recalled!
What say you democrats about The Boston Globe also supporting McCain?  Something to be said about a liberal newspaper supporting him as well?  These aren't stupid people, yet they're crossing party lines to support a man who will not only bring this country together, but will gain respect around the world.
Give Joe the credit .... to recognize a circus act when he sees one .. and that's just what the Democrats have been, currently are and will offer to America with their current crop of candidates.  Both McCain and Lieberman are true leaders that clearly understand where the nation is and where it needs to go .. so I say Thank You Joe for the Leadership you showed today and will show in the future.  God Bess..... Tom Retired Colonel USA
I think that the continuing criticism of Lieberman shows just how far the Democratic Party have gone from being the party of Roosevelt, Truman and Kennedy to being the party of Ned Lamont, Cindy Sheehan and Michael Moore!
Zev Jabotinsky - San Diego, CA
Israel is nuclear. They will not be pushed into the sea by anyone that doesn't want a mushroom cloud blooming over their capital city. They hardly need our help although I suppose they don't mind Americans fighting and dieing to their advantage. No matter what you think of him, Lieberman has done a fine job as Senator from the great state of Israel. If they could just find a final solution to the Palestinian question.
Shalom, through superior firepower.
Pat, Huntington:

I always wondered why Liebermann accepted.

Why would Joe Liebermann want anything to do with the Democrat party anyway?
No jeff, hemet,ca, it really is "Kyl".  You might want to check it out so you don't needlessly call other people idiots.
Lieberman sees to represent the interest of a country other than the United States.  Why are U.S. poloticians sooo afraid of the Jewish lobby?  What's good for Israeli is not always what is best for the U.S..  The two are not always the same.  So many in the U.S. seem to be confused about this!!!!!
Joe Lieberman is not Democrat, Republican or Independent.  The reason he's supporting McCain is because of McCain's support of the Iraq war.  Lieberman's true loyalty lies with Israel; everything he says or does indicates he's concerned more Israel's interests than America's.
Democrats and republicans are really the same creature.  Very few on either side care about what the were elected for.  Power is the only thing they care about and as we sit around thinking how great the democrats are and how republicans suck, and how democrats suck and how great republicans are, we are actually getting screwed by all of them.

WAKE UP.  They are all out for themselves.  THe republicans use 911 to get everything they want through and the democrats say "We don't have to do anything..I like what the republicans have done for us."

Bottom line...they are mostly in it for themselves and to hell with us because we only matter during election time.

C'mon prove me wrong.
I will be standing for McCain in the Iowa caucuses and I won't be moving, the others will come to my corner. I trust him.
You guys I understand your concern but for Libberman is the last 15 minutes of infame; he is a traitor to the liberl cause.
Why, if you ever wondered why our country is going down the drain, it is because we have representatives like Lieberman, who do not give anything for our future. He is all there for Israel.... nothing else. We have a corrupted political system, corrupted by zionist lobbyists, zionist politicians, zionist media etc etc.
Ah,the evil ''Zionists''again. No wonder the Arabs laugh at us. DESPERATES faux-toughguy routine masks central truths. When Virginias Democrat Rep. Jim Moron[or is it ''Moran''?],stated in a speech in 2005 that ''The Jews are becoming too powerful''[before anguished aides could turn the mike away knowing what was going to come next], he touched upon the libels that have haunted the Jewish people for over a thousand years, and accepted them as a form of gospel. Thus,anti-Semites who yet quail at the term being directed at them, nevertheless freely buy into philosophies made ready to order in not simply the formative years of the Nazi period, but earlier observations made by Russians,Europeans[and even Americans. Henry Fords 1917 book on the ''dangers''of ''world Zionism'' played so nicely into Nazi hands that Hitler kept a German translation of Fords screed in his library in the ''Eagles Nest'',a favoured retreat in Bavaria],made plain that the world was under ''Zionist [this word is traded for ''Jewish''so as to promote an ostensibly non-''anti-Semitic''credential]domination''.
Nothing has changed. The Left sees the talons of ''AIPAC''pulling the strings of all but those politicians[usually African American members of Congress, who are in league with terrorist dictators including the late Arafat],acting as a worldwide ''Illuminati''.A recent trip to Friscos leftwinged bookstore CITY LIGHTS confirmed this view with one tome after another perched on shelves detailing the sinister influence of these ''Zionist cabals''.

Yet no-one speaks of the influences being spread by Arab nations which include the purchase of entire political systems with the not-to-be-resisted allure of tons of petrodollars which have been a staple of Democrat politics since the decades-ago ABSCAM scandals which used FBI agents-as-phony sheiks. Bahrain,Qatar,Dubai and Saudi Arabia are busily invading Americas politics through the usage of lobbyist fronts, which are primarily made up of former Clintonistas, peppered with old-Guard Bush I and Reagan apparatchiks, and buying up large sections of America. Indeed,as it now stands, for sheer wealth, the oil-larded Arabs are performing a tour de force in directing the nations economic and foreign policy arenas in ways that benefit these to the point of virtually chaining the nations fortunes to their own. Bill Clinton, and several of his old pals are working to further this relationship, with Bill actually keeping his friendship with the Emirates Princes as a portion of his resume.
Obviously this becomes a lesser of two evils approach. Lessee. A nation the size of Delaware surrounded by nations whose size and population would equal the remaining 49 states, all of them out for Jewish blood.[yes, even Egypt, which has been backsliding away from the Sadat period of peace with Israel for many years now],a democratic voting system with multiple political parties.Check. A nation which allows women unfettered rights, including leadership. Check. A nation that tolerates gays and lesbians. Check. A nation that freely allows contrarian, feminist, and socialist thought. Check. A nation that allows all religions or none. Check. A nation that did not send its young men to drive aircraft into the side of the WTC and Pentagon[debated by a pack of leftwinged idiots blaming,of course,''The Jews'']. Check. A nation that does not have the world tied into an OPEC pricefixing stranglehold. Check.
                    Up against this?

Stoning and hanging of women [and girls] and gays
Perpetual loss of human rights at the most basic levels.
Our Religion And No Others[immediately before you are imprisoned or put to death for proletyzing, whether you did so or not].
Terrorism as national policy
Racial and religious hatred
Mein Kamph As Perinnial Bestseller
Oil As Blackmail
Nukes As Blackmail
Theocratic Rule

Those who rail at ''Zionists''would do well to observe that the alternative is more medieval and primative than anything found in Neros Rome or Attilas Gaul, and infinately more dangerous to the fortunes of the world. Lieberman has every business huckstering Israel as Ellison does in huckstering Islam.[Or Clinton huckstering Dubai].
what joe and zell both did is what you kool-aid drinkers could never understand or relate to, they actually stood up for what they believe in, right or wrong, there really is people that want what is best for this country not their political party, we really have become a nation of sheep.
On economic issues, there is no difference between neocon McCain and neo-liberal Lieberman. Both are pro big business, pro war and pro Israel. So it comes as no surprise that Lieberman is supporting McCain in the primary. A contest between  neo con McCain and  neo liberal Clinton in the general election would give us a choice between 2 candidates willing to sacrifice American blood to further the interest of corporate America. It's time for the Democratic Party to stop letting the DLC and the lead them.
There is little differnce between neocon McCain and neolib Lieberman so it comes as no suprise that Lieberman is supporting McCain in the primary. Both are pro war,pro big business, and pro Israel. A race between McCain and Clinton in the General Election would give us a choice between 2 candidates willing to sacrifice American blood for corporate interest. It's time for the Democratic Party to stop letting the Neolibs in the DLC lead them and get back to their core beliefs.
