Obama turns up the heat on Edwards

Posted: Monday, December 17, 2007 2:43 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan

Spencer, IA -- Turning up the heat may be a slogan that Clinton coined on the campaign trail, but it was Obama who ratcheted up the temperature in the Democratic race today -- and it was aimed at Edwards.

At a town hall here, Obama directly questioned Edwards' record in the Senate, contrasting his record with Edwards' in regards to taking on the special interests. "The reason now that I raise this issue of the special interests is because everybody now in the campaign talks about how I am going to fight for you. Like Sen. Edwards, who is a good guy -- he's been talking a lot about, 'I am going to fight the lobbyists and the special interests in Washington.' Well the question you have to ask is: Were you fighting for'em when you were in the Senate. What did you do? Because I did something, immediately upon arriving in the Senate, despite the fact that it wasn't a popular position to take."

Obama added, "And that will give you some sense of whether or not folks are real are fighting for when they get into the presidency."

“I guess the Obama campaign is starting to realize what others have already: There is growing excitement on the ground for John Edwards as we enter the homestretch," said Edwards communications director Chris Kofinis in a statement. "But the truth is that John Edwards is the only candidate in this race who has never taken a dime of PAC or lobbyist money and he’s also the only one urging the Democratic Party to reject lobbyist money. Unlike others, John Edwards has beaten corporate special interests his entire life, and won’t be obliged to compromise or negotiate with them as President.”

The reason for Obama's attack, according to Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki, is to help voters distinguish between the two candidates. Psaki said Obama was trying to distinguish his record, which she says has been focused on taking money out of politics and ethics reform since he was in the Illinois state Senate. "When Senator Edwards got into the Senate, he didn't do anything to change the ethics system in Washington," she noted.

Edwards and Obama have been trading barbs all weekend as the two criss-crossed the north central part of the state on their respective bus tours. But the distinctions drawn were focused on their potential futures in the White House and how they would take on the special interests to pass health-care reform, rather than attacking anything they had done on the past.

Edwards had said Friday that Obama was wrong to think that universal health-care could be passed without fighting the special interests. Obama countered on Saturday, saying that "just beating them" was not a way to get anything done.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, Obama's chief strategist, David Axelrod, put the difference on their approaches more bluntly. "But if you put forward a plan that that overlooks insurance companies, it's really hard to understand how you are going to execute it without talking to them. And that's really what Sen. Edwards is saying. We're going to have private insurance companies in my plan but we're not going to talk to them because they are evil and they're bad."

The focus on drawing a contrast on lobbying reflects the voters that are turning up at town hall. Over the past five days, voters have asked more than a dozen times about what Obama would do about special interest influence in Washington.

Many voters at town halls are also saying that they are choosing between Edwards and Obama, and the choice they are making is often more visceral than scientific. As one woman in Algona said Sunday, "I was choosing between [Obama] and Edwards. I've seen Obama and he'll probably be the last one to come through here so I'm going with him."

The two candidates both spoke at Mason City on Saturday night, and experienced a reversal in roles, with Edwards packing a huge hall that was so crowded that the press left their risers and went into the balcony to shoot the event. Obama also drew a sizeable number of people, around 450, but in a comparison of press reports by NBC reporters, it lacked the frenzied enthusiasm that greeted Edwards.

As the two traverse the same countryside over the next few days, Obama will undoubtedly try to cull more support from a region that Edwards has stumped in for nearly six years. The question is whether voters are open to the distinctions and won't be turned off by the negative campaigning.

For now, the Obama camp doesn't seem concerned about any potential backlash. "There's a big difference between negative campaigning and drawing contrasts on how the candidates would govern when they went to Washington," Psaki said.

The race for THIRD is in full swing...

Hillary already has that sewn up.
Clinton can't script this any better.  She racks up some big endorsements last week, the 'Register' over the weekend, and now Obama and Edwards are going at it like school girls.

No Van,

I think they are in the race for 1st.
Seems like everytime Senator Obama says anything at all about John Edwards, it gets written up . . . doesn't seem no newsworthy.

I wonder why no mention of Senator Clinton's Today show interview this morning on your sister network . . . that seemed much more interesting!
The race for THIRD is in full swing...

Hillary has marked 3rd place as her territory already.  She licked it and said "mine-zees! no takebacks!"
John Edwards is the only one that gives us a chance to win the White House in November. Both Obama and Hillary dont stand a chance to win in the south. Only Edwards will win the south. He is the only one that will kick the coporate out of Washington. Go Edwards to the White House
It is a mistake for Edward to take Obama for obvious reasons.  Edward is claiming that he is strong and can fight interest groups but he has no record to prove it.  On graduation from law school, he went to work as a trial lawyer specializing in malpractice health insurance and became a multi millionaire.  That is not a trajectory of a person who devoted himself to public service.  When a trial lawyer wins malpractice case in court, the insurance company will raise their premium on doctors and doctors will pass sum premium to the consumer.  John Edward case is a person who made money as a trial lawyer and wanted to use his wealth to pursue power in the public service.  Edward’s lifestyle has not shown convincingly of a person who dedicated his life fighting for the underclass but he only wanted to use his rhetoric for fighting for them as a cover for seeking presidential power.  Compare Edward’s career trajectory with that of Obama and the difference starts to stab us in the face.
Here is John Edwards and his voting record in the Senate when it comes to drugs....

   *  Oppose decriminalizing marijuana; it sends wrong signal. (Oct 2007)
   * Supports national ban on smoking in public places. (Sep 2007)
   * Do not lower drinking age from 21 to 18. (Sep 2007)
   * Help convicts with drug counseling & job counseling. (Jun 2007)
   * Supports drug courts and alternatives to incarceration. (Mar 2004)
   * Disparity in penalty for crack vs. powder is not justified. (Jan 2004)
   * Admits having smoked marijuana. (Nov 2003)
   * Voted NO on increasing penalties for drug offenses. (Nov 1999)
   * Rated B- by VOTE-HEMP, indicating a pro-hemp voting record. (Dec 2003)

I disagree with him on not increasing penalties for drug offenses and his obvious liberal choice of drug courts and rehab instead of jail time, what good would that do for anyone?  You break the law you go to jail.

How about the race for first is in full swing? The key to IA is in rural areas and i am glad Obama is not ceding it to Edward. We all know Clinton can't compete in this area, thus, she is no factor.

Clinton is going to be the biggest looser in IA; perhaps, she is going to come 4th.

Obama -- 1st
Edward-- 2nd
Biden -- 3rd
Clinton -- 4th
The Clinton campaign is done stick a fork in it.  The race in Iowa is coming down to Edwards or Obama.  The Register endorsment means nothing never picks the winner ask John Edwards four years ago. If people look at everyones records John Edwards is the only one who has spent a career sticking up for the little guy.
As someone who took this oath "I, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God", I question the Constitutionally of someone who is a pastor/minister of a church (eg, Huckabee, Sharpton) running for the Office of the President of the United States of America.

I think that the Founding Fathers would be mortified at the de-evolution of this nation that they fought so hard to create.  Freedom from religious governance is the backbone and foundation of the United States of the
America.  If you don't like it, LEAVE!
what the hell is Obama doing?  He shouldn't be attacking Edwards.  That's a bad strategy because Edwards can now strike him from a defensive position, and Edwards is a much better counter-puncher than Hillary is so Obama better watch out.
Both Edwards and Obama are right. Edwards did **** all in the senate against special interests. Barack's idea of attacking special interests is more realistic but too conciliatory.
Looks like Edwards is a heck of a lot stronger on the ground than the media has been portraying it to be. Even Barck Obama recognizes that Hillary isn't his true competition in Iowa, but that John Edwards is. It's going to be good ya'll.
My family and I are democrats but if Obama is the Democratic candidate, we are not voting for him. He jumped on this too soon.  I am a minority so don't blame race on this.  There's a lot of experienced candidate out there.  Just because he was called the next Bill Clinton when he won the Senate seat doesn't mean he has to jump at the first opportunity.  For all democrats out there, this is our opportunity to get the white house back.  Let's not take this for granted.  Let's choose a candidate who could win the election. For me, Edwards has the best chance.
So NOW Obama realizes Edwards is a threat?  Love it.

Yeah CitizenJ, Hillary is looking more like the Iowa #3 than ever before.

I'd guess the Register endorsement will only irritated the anti-Hillary crowd even more-- unlike 4 years ago, when the Edwards endorsement gave hesitant voters some home-grown intellectual cover to vote for the New Young Guy, this time around the endorsement of Hillary is a totally different animal.

The media would like to say that the Register endorsing Hillary has turned the tide for her, but her issue isn't the media narrative, her issue is that a majority of Democratic voters do not like her.  Period.

Obama and Edwards can battle for 1st and 2nd

Go Edwards Go
Excuse the faux pas. My comment was to been posted on the Huckabee article, not this one.
The Democrats better be real darn careful how they treat the candidacy of Barack Obama. All of these Racist and Xenophobic attacks aimed at the Senator will backfire against the party as a whole. In case Democrats forgot, there's only one reason why Blacks ( who are CONSERVATIVE at their core) vote Democrat and not Republican.

It's NOT because of their stand on Abortion

It's NOT because of their stand on Gay Marriage

It's mainly because of a "perceived" notion that Republicans are racist and Blacks have no where else to go. What do Democrats think will happen if the Black Community perceives that Hillary or Edwards won the Democratic Nomination because they used racism and xenophobia against Barack Obama as opposed to the issues? Hmmm? Do you think they will vote party line for the sake of the Party? The party that only talks to them during election season ? Hmmm? Is that what you think will happen? Well, if so, Democrats are in for a huge awakening. I'll make it clear. You guys better (HOPE) that Mike Huckabee is not on the Republican ballot if Hillary Clinton or John Edwards is on the Democratic ballot.

After all the racism that has been revealed within the Democratic Party and the frustration of neglect towards African Americans by Democrats, you better HOPE and pray to "Jaysus" that Mike Huckabee is NOT the Republican nominee because if he is , you can kiss the Black vote GOOD BYE and GOOD RIDDANCE!

Think about it.

I disagree with him on not increasing penalties for drug offenses and his obvious liberal choice of drug courts and rehab instead of jail time, what good would that do for anyone?  You break the law you go to jail.

The jails are overcrowded as it is.  If you want all drug related offenders to serve time in jail, open up your wallet and accept the tax increase necessary to build the thousands of jails you'd need.
Ooops.

Wrong story.

Sorry.
Jerry lets just keep putting more people in jail thats the answer the war on drugs has been as succesful as prohibition. We jail more citizens than Great Britian, Canada and Japan combined what a country.
"You break the law you go to jail."

Sending non-violent offenders to jail makes them violent offenders after their release and destroys every opportunity for them finding the right path.

In addition to being cruel it is very expensive because instead of being productive the state had to catch them, prosecute them etc. all out of your taxes.

Prevention works, it's cheaper and way more productive.
'Edward is claiming that he is strong and can fight interest groups but he has no record to prove it.  On graduation from law school, he went to work as a trial lawyer specializing in malpractice health insurance and became a multi millionaire'

right , fighting for the patients and against the insurance companies is bad.

Are all obamaites idiots?

Edwards has the record of standing up to corporations. Obama solicits them.
While Senator Obama appears to be gaining on Senator Clinton in both Iowa and New Hampshire, the following poll taken a week ago, shows Clinton still running very strong.  Unfortunately, as she is not my choice, I believe she will be the nominee unless something changes very soon!!

Why Senator Biden is at 3% blows me away!! I wish people would pay attention to the candidates more closely and not their “celebrity,” which is what got this country in trouble with George W. Bush!! Again, Al Gore, your country needs you, please??!!

ABC News/Washington Post Poll. Dec. 6-9, 2007. N=429 likely Democratic primary voters nationwide. MoE ± 4.5. Fieldwork by TNS.

"If the 2008 Democratic presidential primary or caucus in your state were being held today, and the candidates were [see below], for whom would you vote?" Names rotated. Includes leaners. For 7/07 and earlier, includes second choices of Gore supporters.

Hillary Clinton, 53%; Barack Obama, 23%; John Edwards, 10%; Bill Richardson, 3%; Joe Biden, 3%; Dennis Kucinich, 2%; Chris Dodd, 0%; None of the above, 1%; Undecided, 3%.

I read much "wishful thinking" here; I wish I could believe it; I don't!! Senator Clinton will be the democratic nominee; everyone should either pray something drastically changes or begin accepting it!!

WAKE UP VOTERS!!

Obama's Friendly Questioner
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2007/12/obamas-friendly.html
fact (Sent Monday, December 17, 2007 3:07 PM)

Are people (read: Hillary Clinton's warmongers) trying to compare that to Hillary's repeated planted questions?  Doesn't sound to me like anything got planted... there's nothin wrong with asking a friendly question, and the guy was even do a piece for his newspaper...

I do think it's pretty funny for John Edwards to act like his records on special interests is better than Obama.  Edwards went to work for a multi-million dollar trial litigation firm and worked his way through the ranks of rich trial lawyers taking 30-40% of victims' money.

Obama, he went to the slums of Chicago and worked as a community organizer...

That's why the one thing I support in the Arab countries they do when they catch druggies......

Lashes
hands/feet chopped off
beheadings

Maybe we would have less problems if we followed that part of Islamic law.......

Duggies are no different then murderers and rapists...
BlackEvangelicals (Sent Monday, December 17, 2007 3:13 PM)

Former President Bill Clinton, may blacks state, was the "first black president."  Don't be so sure that blacks will abandon Hillary Clinton if she's the nominee; they won't!! The black still remember what Bill Clinton did for them; having him back in the White House would NOT upset them; I know!!
JFK came only once in American History, so was Martin Luther King. We are privilage that God send another rare one, in the person of OBAMA.
Race, Politics, Religion etc will not deny us this opportunity.
Yo BlackEv, When did Edwards ever go after Obama based on race. As a matter of fact, in a debate this year, Edwards in answering a question told the audience that if you're voting for him because Hillary is a woman or because Barack is black, he doesn't want your vote. Hold it down friend.
Daniel (Lafayette, CA): '....what the hell is Obama doing?  He shouldn't be attacking Edwards.  That's a bad strategy because Edwards can now strike him from a defensive position, and Edwards is a much better counter-puncher than Hillary is so Obama better watch out. ...'

EXACTLY, Caniel
Edwards and Obama are natural allies
Edwards and Obama are reformers
Either of them would be a great nominee
and one of them WILL BE !!

Let's work together, not at corss-purposes

Obama/Edwards '08
Vote for hope, not for fear
Edwards and Obama in their jabs still clearly like/respect each other(s campaigns).  I may be proved wrong in the future, but they are cordial with their differences now.  I bet Clinton wishes she could get in on the civility.  But alas, like her NY counterpart, she is becoming "increasingly irrelevant."
I hear ya Black Evangelical.  On another note, I think Obama's remarks might be because he's feeling pressure from Edwards, but it might be that he wants to create some distance.  He might just wants to close the deal.  That might be greedy but it could turn out to be a smart strategy.
Edmonsky, Sacramento, CA (Sent Monday, December 17, 2007 3:00 PM)

Edwards also did a lot of product liability cases.  You know, the kind where you sue the big corporations who make pool drains that suck out the intestines of little kids who swim too close.

Yes, he made millions.  But think about one thing:  these cases are often taken on contingency, which means if they don't get a settlement, neither did he.  If they settled for $50,000, he would probably get a third of that.  When you consider how much work goes into a case like this, the amount of money the lawyer takes home doesn't seem like that much - especially when you consider that they are gambling on a victory and they could be out all of that time and money if they don't win.

Not to mention, holding doctors accountable for the damage they may inflict is a good thing, as is doing the same for corporations.  Seems to me like Edwards has spent most of his career fighting for the little people, just as he has said.
Obama seems to think it would be more productive to negotiate with corporate and special interest lobbyist to get them to work with him to solve the problem of corrupt money influence on politics. Edwards on the other hand says," the time for cowering and slaps on the wrist have passed, those  engaged in corrupt politics are not going to surrender without a figth, and I am prepared to fight!" As a very successful trial attorney who has taken on corporate America, Edwards knows full well that one must negotiate from strength in order to get the best deal possible, and knows full well that the one who brings the biggest stick to the fight usually gets the better of it. Edwards also knows a president weilds a very big stick with the veto pen and bully pulpit so "please" is not the only option.
Prince Chidi, Bronx (Sent Monday, December 17, 2007 3:28 PM)

I pray you are right!!
Sierra, SF (Sent Monday, December 17, 2007 3:31 PM)

I'm with you!! WAKE UP VOTERS!!
Doles, I agree.  Senator Obama is trying create some separation between he and fmr Senator Edwards.  Edwards has been jabbing at Senator Obama for some time now about his Health Care plan, about him being a uniter not a divider (yea, I said it, I like President Bush even though I don't like his policies, he is a good man).  Also, Joe Tripper said that Senator Obama's supporters don't believe he has the experience, that is an interesting statement because when ask, according to the polls, Clinton might be 1st in the experience question, but Obama is 2nd sometimes 3rd (Richardson who has more experience that Clinton is 2nd sometimes) with Edwards bringing up the rear.
--NSMSNBC (Sent Monday, December 17, 2007 3:31 PM)

I agree!! It's very obvious the Obama and Clinton campaigns are at "war!!"  Those who think one will choose the other as the VP are dead wrong; I don't think they like each other at all!! Edwards and Obama, on the other hand, appear to genuinely like each other!!
"Duggies are no different then murderers and rapists..."

I'm not sure if that deserves a laugh or a tear.
I support Barack Obama because I agree with him.  Edwards has done some interesting things over the past 4 years, but for all his talk on poverty he still lives in an extravagant mansion in Chapel Hill and I'm sorry, but I don't see how he'll be able to prosecute his way through the presidency.

You can't divide up America.  As Obama said in 2004, there is the United States of America - not corporate America and private America, not Red States and Blue States, the United States.

To use an example ... look what Bill Clinton did by working with drug companies and AIDS activists.  He brokered a deal which has drug companies providing medications in Africa at a discounted rate.  Those drugs save lives and prevent disease.

Now, say what you will about Bill Clinton, but those are the sorts of SOLUTIONS our country needs.

Check out Barack Obama's campaign website and you'll see he's drawing people from a wide range of political spectrums.  And he's not collecting money from corporate donors or PACs.
Hey Chuck, how many pro-bono cases did Edwards take while he was a personal injury lawyer?

.....That's what I thought.

Edwards did not manage to pass a single piece of legislation under his own name while he was in the Senate, so any claims that he will be able to get a legislative agenda passed by Congress is just hot air.
"Obama's Friendly Questioner"
Fact

Hey fact get your facts straight.  Does anyone here believe that a candidates volunteers and supporters have not asked questions of their candidate?  Come on, every candidate has been asked such a question.  The difference from this and the Hilliary "plant" was the fact that Hilliary's campaign was actively passing out questions for people to ask Hilliary, and when those people refused they moved on looking for others to do so.  Fact -- you have absolutely no proof that Obama's campaign (or for that matter any other campaign, other than Hilliary's) was passing out pre-set questions to ask the candidate with the candidate having a pre-scripted response to it.  This is such a crock.  But if Hilliary wants to re-raise the issue of her campaign planting questions with her audience then by all means do so.
I wish people would be fair... I am an educated African American...  Male, I might add. I think Hillary is clearly the most savvy candidate.  If she gets the nomination, she show go for Edwards as a running mate.  If Edwards gets it, he can choose either Hillary or Obama.  If Obama gets it, he MUST choose Edwards.  This is because the South will not elect a Black President... I do not care what sentimental "feel good" views brought forth.
"I disagree with him on not increasing penalties for drug offenses and his obvious liberal choice of drug courts and rehab instead of jail time, what good would that do for anyone?"

Jerry, you remind me of the typical Republican.  Drug courts and rehab have been highly successful.  It is cheaper than incarceration, they have a very low recidivism rate(unlike prisons), and the lack of overcrowding would allow us to lock up more deserving criminals for longer periods of time.

It never fails that there is always a Rep who wants to be "tough" on criminals but does not realize that they working against their own self interest.
Obama is starting to crack. He will be done before Iowa.
If Senator Edwards was to win Iowa, would he be entitled to be included with the "front runners?"  Would the boost such a victory would bring be enough to help him climb in the national polls?
Of course this is not an attack by Obama it is only an attack when Clinton does it.
Xena, matters not where you meant to post it. You need to reread the constitution.
