Obama turns up the heat on Edwards

Posted: Monday, December 17, 2007 2:43 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan

Spencer, IA -- Turning up the heat may be a slogan that Clinton coined on the campaign trail, but it was Obama who ratcheted up the temperature in the Democratic race today -- and it was aimed at Edwards.

At a town hall here, Obama directly questioned Edwards' record in the Senate, contrasting his record with Edwards' in regards to taking on the special interests. "The reason now that I raise this issue of the special interests is because everybody now in the campaign talks about how I am going to fight for you. Like Sen. Edwards, who is a good guy -- he's been talking a lot about, 'I am going to fight the lobbyists and the special interests in Washington.' Well the question you have to ask is: Were you fighting for'em when you were in the Senate. What did you do? Because I did something, immediately upon arriving in the Senate, despite the fact that it wasn't a popular position to take."

Obama added, "And that will give you some sense of whether or not folks are real are fighting for when they get into the presidency."

“I guess the Obama campaign is starting to realize what others have already: There is growing excitement on the ground for John Edwards as we enter the homestretch," said Edwards communications director Chris Kofinis in a statement. "But the truth is that John Edwards is the only candidate in this race who has never taken a dime of PAC or lobbyist money and he’s also the only one urging the Democratic Party to reject lobbyist money. Unlike others, John Edwards has beaten corporate special interests his entire life, and won’t be obliged to compromise or negotiate with them as President.”

The reason for Obama's attack, according to Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki, is to help voters distinguish between the two candidates. Psaki said Obama was trying to distinguish his record, which she says has been focused on taking money out of politics and ethics reform since he was in the Illinois state Senate. "When Senator Edwards got into the Senate, he didn't do anything to change the ethics system in Washington," she noted.

Edwards and Obama have been trading barbs all weekend as the two criss-crossed the north central part of the state on their respective bus tours. But the distinctions drawn were focused on their potential futures in the White House and how they would take on the special interests to pass health-care reform, rather than attacking anything they had done on the past.

Edwards had said Friday that Obama was wrong to think that universal health-care could be passed without fighting the special interests. Obama countered on Saturday, saying that "just beating them" was not a way to get anything done.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, Obama's chief strategist, David Axelrod, put the difference on their approaches more bluntly. "But if you put forward a plan that that overlooks insurance companies, it's really hard to understand how you are going to execute it without talking to them. And that's really what Sen. Edwards is saying. We're going to have private insurance companies in my plan but we're not going to talk to them because they are evil and they're bad."

The focus on drawing a contrast on lobbying reflects the voters that are turning up at town hall. Over the past five days, voters have asked more than a dozen times about what Obama would do about special interest influence in Washington.

Many voters at town halls are also saying that they are choosing between Edwards and Obama, and the choice they are making is often more visceral than scientific. As one woman in Algona said Sunday, "I was choosing between [Obama] and Edwards. I've seen Obama and he'll probably be the last one to come through here so I'm going with him."

The two candidates both spoke at Mason City on Saturday night, and experienced a reversal in roles, with Edwards packing a huge hall that was so crowded that the press left their risers and went into the balcony to shoot the event. Obama also drew a sizeable number of people, around 450, but in a comparison of press reports by NBC reporters, it lacked the frenzied enthusiasm that greeted Edwards.

As the two traverse the same countryside over the next few days, Obama will undoubtedly try to cull more support from a region that Edwards has stumped in for nearly six years. The question is whether voters are open to the distinctions and won't be turned off by the negative campaigning.

For now, the Obama camp doesn't seem concerned about any potential backlash. "There's a big difference between negative campaigning and drawing contrasts on how the candidates would govern when they went to Washington," Psaki said.

Edward records don’t measure up but he is still better than Hillary Clinton. Obama is the only one that truly believes in public service among the three of them. Obama is my first choice, Edward is second, Biden is third and Hillary Clinton is 4th.

Hillary's record doesn't measure up either. She went to make money after law school and return later to public service just in time for Rose law firm's contract with the Governor's office.
Per Bee, NH

Clinton is going to be the biggest looser in IA; perhaps, she is going to come 4th.

Obama -- 1st
Edward-- 2nd
Biden -- 3rd
Clinton -- 4th

Save this clip Bee to put on your computer screen (so you can't deny it) to remind yourself how WRONG you were when Hillary comes in first and the Iowans kick Obama to the curb!

GO HILLARY '08
Obama is basically just some guy off the street.  Imagine of the guy who changes your oil or serves you hot dogs were running for President.  That's Obama. Could anyone be LESS qualified to be President?

Clinton has done what women have done for ages:  She's rode the coattails of the man in her life to a place of prominence and now basks in the reflected glory of someone who I think was a truly great President: Bill Clinton.

Newsflash! Being married to a great President doesn't make you a great President; it makes you part of the entourage.  Nobody shows up to a Springsteen concert wanting to hear the roadies play.

And, being an experienced wife whose only success amounts to benefiting from the indulgence and political access granted by a husband is not relevant Presidential experience.

Edwards is a certifiable PITA.  And that's why he should and will be President. I think his time as a lawyer likely involved screwing a lot of regular folk out of a lot of money and pretending that he's doing it because he loves humanity; but, hey, that's what lawyers do. That's how they get rich. It's their nature.

But that's irrelevant. The point here is, Edwards clearly has a serious bug up his butt regarding special interests and big business, and, personally, I don't care why he wants to beat up on them; I'm happy to hold his coat and watch get busy.

The medicine Edwards is selling is exactly what this country needs to take right now to make it well.
How is Mr. "Trim you sails for donor" Obama going to start fighting the special interests?

He emobodies them.  He has ALWAYS given his vote to them from the state and not guaranteeing loan payments to voting the bankruptcy amendment  to not limit how much the credit companies could charge...to his big donor Exelon and pushing nuke programs and then the latest 6 month push for Coal in the tax paying funded Liquified Coal Bill that would have polluted our air more.

emmy , i guess your the new black plant in here what staff do you work for . You guys or killing me with this crap.
yep, obama did something for special interest when he got into the senate... he made them give him money thru his state connection instead of his federal ones.

WHOOPPPIE!
"Obama is basically just some guy off the street.  Imagine of the guy who changes your oil or serves you hot dogs were running for President.  That's Obama."

Yep the first black president of the Harvard Law Review. Now go buy some popcorn from walmart.
Gary-
To say that she rode on his coattails is a joke. His success was very dependent on having her at his side.
Paul, NY, NY: Bee will be voting for a republican when Hillary captures the nomination --if her 1,000,000 posts haven't made this clear (and I am sure anohter 1,000,000 to come.

:o)
Go Hillary!
I agree with Sean.
DON'T WORRIE BE HAPPY ! hillaryclinton.com
Geez Mr. Nice Guy Obama goes after rival and it is great, when Edwards or anyone else goes after him he whines like a lttle girl. If you think he is any more of a regular guy then Edwards or the other rivals get real. The friends backing him all are rich. Him and his wife sure aren't pulpers. Can't believe you guys are so gullible especially Bee.
Pam Bignardi @ 3:26, What Bill Clinton did for blacks? Go here:
http://jackandjillpolitics.blogspot.com/2007/12/hillary-clinton-comes-out-against.html
It starts out against H, then moves quickly to Mr. First Black President, B.
....and not to mention Bee's 1,000,000 posts on how unqualified Hillary is, how America will never vote for her, etc.

Why not focus on your candidate's strength's, Bee? Oh, now that makes sense why you try to attack Hillary.

She will be our next president - and does that mean, Bee, you'll move to Canada?

Go Hillary!
yiannis:
Is your point that Obama was the president of the Harvard Law Review, and that this qualifies him for Presidency? If so, then I don't see how getting elected to a school office is any qualification at all. Presidents of school groups a ten-a-penny.

Or is your point that he is qualified because he's black. In which case, I would suggest that that in itself, is no credential at all.  There are black hot dog sellers and Jiffy Lube employees. So what?

Sean:

An example of Hillary's necessity to Bill -- the guy who thought so much of her that he repeatedly cheated on her -- would be useful.

What, apart from a little boutique politicking, did she do that made any difference to anything?

Any money she ever made came either from her family, Bill Clinton's name (pushing clients her way), or the US government.

I think Hillary would make a fantastic office manager; she'd sure scare the hack out of me if I were an office flunky.

And I actually admire the way she conductred herslf throughout the Lewinsky affair.  Sure, there was an enlightened self-enterest there, but still, she's only human and it must have hurt.

She also seems like a splendid and loving Mom.

But president?  Why?
Notice the parsing of the manned in which Edwards answers the question. The Edwards camp always talks about "corporate" interests. Well guess what folks. ATLA (association of Trial Lawyers) and the Unions have those big bad lobbyists as well.

In fact if you ever saw John Edwards around the Senate you would know that he spent a lot of time with lobbyists. Wonder if he ever took PAC money from the trial bar or the unions. Just because it's not a "corporation" it's still dirty money right Johnnie?

He is as fake as his smile and the $450 haircut.
I agree with voter, Mesa, Az. Obama does whine like a wuss when someone attacks him - but he can sling mud with ease. He will destruct - no worries there.
Chuck from San Diego wrote:
“right , fighting for the patients and against the insurance companies is bad.  Are all obamaites idiots?”

Is it not true that when a person works and get paid, he or she cannot claim to be helping the person who makes the payment.  Trial lawyers take some cases on contingency bases and if they win such cased they will recoup their overhead and make substantial profits.  It is being idiotic to think that trial lawyers, who are not public defendants or working per pro bono, are fighting for anybody except their stomachs and families.   How many poor people Edward defended on medical malpractice insurrance claims are living in opulence and can affort $400 hair cut?  Edward is a used car salesperson.
Huh, Sean. I don't hear Obama whining. I see him shrugging off most attacks, the silly ones, and responding to the more substantive ones. The only whiner of the group seems to be Clinton.
Why are Democrats spending so much time arguing about which of their three least experienced candidates is the most experienced?

If experience matters, why even mess with these three?

Biden/Dodd all the way! Kucinich for SecDef.
Clinton, Edwards, Obama - no experience - no chance in the general election, we will be beaten over the head again if its any of these three - Experience is Biden/Dodd -- and I just can't believe we did not learn that lesson with Kerry. P.S Joe L. just switch parties please.
hummmm all the talk about hillary and the black votes, she has actually got an endorser that is black, along with alot of other endorsers, and when she was in school she also walked many miles for Martin Luther King, holding signs, she has been for all folks, including you all
Clinton is by far the fakest candidate that has ever ran for President.  There was a great example today.  Her campaign announced that it is trying to show off her soft side, so what does she do, cries at a campaign stop.  What a load of BS!!

I am a Democrat, too, that will NEVER, AND I MEAN EVER, vote for Hillary Clinton.  I have voted Democrat in every Presidential election up until now.  WE NEED CHANGE!

Is this what we are going to let our country become:

1988=BUSH
1992=CLINTON
1996=CLINTON
2000=BUSH
2004=BUSH
2008=CLINTON
2012=CLINTON

WAKE UP PEOPLE!  We're not a damn monarchy!
Lol, speaking of flinging dirt, I was more than prepared to believe Kerrey's first comments were innocent. But just a little bit ago, when explaining his earlier comments, he said Obama went to a madrassa? No way that was an accident.

I'm really surprised he's allowed himself to become party to Clinton campaign tactics.
Hey I agree with that guy on Obama. I have read some racist jabs at Obama that the Clintons have been disguisingly pumping around.

Black America is not stupid. They are watching this race very carefully. All these attempts to frighten voters bc Senator Obama is black will spill back that the Democrats regardless of who wins the nominations

How can Bill clinton cunningly call Obama candidacy a risks? What risk? Ok Mr Clinton, destroy Obama so that your wife wins and wait for a waterloo at the general elections! Quote me in one years time!
John Edwards cannot lead the democratic ticket.

Does Obama live in a ghetto?I did not think so.I do not understand why you people want your representatives to live like paupers---would you?Look at the Bush compounds and phony ranches,Romney lives in a mansion---they are all living off the fat of the land.Look at you religous right------several mansions, private airplanes, jewels, furs, elaborate vacations---same as that oldnasty Hollywood. An attorney works or he does not get paid---anyone that has had to have an attorney knows this.Edwards is a good attorney because he fights---I hope he gets a running start in Iowa
Iowa : '... wish people would be fair... I am an educated African American...  Male, I might add. I think Hillary is clearly the most savvy candidate....'

If Hillary is so 'savvy'....
How did she go from 'inevitable' to gutter fighting also ran ?

Obama is beating her in campaigning
These last few weeks, Obama's campaign has made Hillary look like an amature !

She's the cuckolded wife of a mediocre President
Some qualification, huh ?
She can't even run her campaign on her own
Bill has to try bailing her out !!

She's running a dirty campaign
What kind of an administration would she run ?
Do we need to repeat the partisan gridlock of the 90's ?
Do we need the continuing scandals that are always bubbling around the Clintons

Vote your dreams
Vote for Hope
not for fear
If you want a black muslim civil rights laywer for Prez... vote Osoma... If you want a man that can win the white house.. vote edwards... If you want to trade Republican money for Dem money vote Hill. Do you think the Clinton machine wanted you to think about just where Hussein was when he wrote the letter wanting to be Prez? He was in a magrassa (sp) praying to Allah to rid the world of the evil westerners...
Be very careful what you wish for !
What Obama did is VOTE FOR BUSH'S CORPORATE ENERGY BILL.

What Obama did is vote to allow credit card companies to charge consumers up to 30% interest.

What Obama did is vote to give Bush EVERY DIME THAT HE WANTED FOR IRAQ, even though after Obama got to the Senate in 2005, it was clear that Iraq was already a mess.

That's what Obama did as soon as he got to the Senate.
....The Democrats better be real darn careful how they treat the candidacy of Barack Obama. All of these Racist and Xenophobic attacks aimed at the Senator will backfire against the party as a whole. In case Democrats forgot, there's only one reason why Blacks ( who are CONSERVATIVE at their core) vote Democrat and not Republican.....

Me: African American, Male, 50, six-figure income, vote democratic 85% of the time....

I am no evangelist...I think we have gone to far already in mixing religion and politics..

I do agree with Black Evangelist that the democratic party and the Clinton's in particular are playing with fire..they are making thinly vailed attacks on Obama based on race and religion....I started this season as a Hillary supporter and would not vote for her under any circumstances. I can't believe my eyes at what I am seeing.
This country will NOT elect a black president. Talk to any group of white people and you will find this true. Clinton is the only candidate who can win. A vote for Obama is a vote for the Republican nominee
why is Obama acting like a whining sissy? If anybody draws a contrast to him they are attacking him----but if he draws a contrast he is not attacking.Do we need someone with such a thin skin?If he wins the primary this will seem like awalk in the park--compared to what the republicans will do and say.
John, You're #1! GO JOHN GO!
Edwards and Obama aren't attacking one another. For several days, Edwards has been trying to contrast himself to Obama and what he would do when president, so Obama is now doing some contrasting of his own. They are both contenders for the nomination and it's their job to compare/contrast themselves with each other and their other opponents.

The difference here is that they are both sticking to the issues. Unlike HRC, who loves to lob personal slurs at her opponents. That's attacking.
I think the last Des Moines Register debate where Edwards wowed the undecided voters in both the CNN & Fox focus groups really started the ball rolling for Edwards momentum. On TV he's appeared relaxed and confident. This weekend I watched one of his events on cspan and he was brilliant. You can see with your own eyes that he really connects with the voters during the Q & A after the event.

He's been greatly outspent in Iowa and received far less media coverage and yet Obama & Clinton have not been able to put him away. Imagine what would happen if the entire Democratic party were backing him. I'm so excited that with Edwards as our nominee this could be the year where the Democratic party competes in all 50 states. This guy is the best natural campaigner I've seen since Bill Clinton. I hope Democrats recognize it and make him our nominee.
Obama was raised by what belief system? What belief system spawned 9/11 attackers? How much do muslims like America regularly, when they are not actually living in America? Yeah...and I bet some of you would find a new found liking for muslim beliefs if you lived in the middle east...Ahem...Go figure. I think the politically correct nightmare has just reached peak levels of....Oh wait, are some of you the people who are stoned on pot regularly, and want to see it legalized? I don't think your as "peaced out" as you imagine. I'd vote for Edwards under these circumstances.
OUTRAGE

"Former senator Bob Kerrey, who recently endorsed Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, said during a television appearance on Monday that her primary opponent, Sen, Barack Obama, attended a "secular madrassa" as a child."
Emmy, as Oprah stated -you are Not God, and you don't know who should be the next President, to say that you are democrat and you will not vote for the candidate who is the winner is offensive.  I didn't vote for John Kerry when he ran in the primary but I voted for him in the general election.

Barack Obama, if his skin was more like his mother's than his father's and he ran with the credentials that he has - he would be herald as the Great White Hope for America, the sun would rise and set on him, it is unthinkable that his brown skin is the problem for a "minority" if you are black just say black, it is not a disease.

I am very sick of black people who have to qualify the black candidate but these same folks if it were a white candidate would run through the streets of america announcing how great the guy is.

I suggest that you check yourself and ask yourself how many candidates who are not black have you voted for and what substantial improvements have been made and have you EVER required anything of them other than that they had a "D" behind their name.

Give me a break, if Dr. King, Shirley Chilsom, Barbara Jordan, Adam Clayton Powell, Thurgood Marshall, and Harriet Tubman were alive, they would be sick to stomach to know that they fought so hard to have a Harvard Graduate, President of the Harvard Law Review, Civil Rights Attorney, Constitutional Lawyer, Teacher, Educator, State Senator, U.S. Senator, Husband, Father and a man who was willing to give up the money for the people, and you have the audacity to declare that he should wait, thank God Hariett Tubman and others on the list did not decide to wait to run for office, fight for civil rights, march against injustice as you suggest, thank God they did not because if they had, we would not have seen a civil rights movement, or women with the right to vote, or the disable receiving the rights.

We don't need another black American telling black people to wait.  I am so glad to see so many people who are bright and intelligent enough to want to see a better America and they are not concerned about the color of the person's skin.  By the way isn't that the point; that people are elected because of the content of their character and the ability to lead!!

Run Barack Run - we need a man of character who can bring this nation together especially the ignorant.

Dr. King stated, "Nothing in the world is more dangerous than since ignorance and conscientious stupidity."

Human nature strikes again! People will listen to the candidate they already believe in, and will ignore the others. There are candidates that hold the country and people's interests, not the money and corporates.
The Democrats have a very well respected, no-nonsense candidate that CAN win the white house, and WILL start the country to mend.  Senator Biden has time and time again fought for the people of this country on the senate floor and won!
Can we just take the time to really listen and support the candidates that will restore what the present administration has crushed?
OUTRAGE

Former senator Bob Kerrey, who recently endorsed Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, said during a television appearance on Monday that her primary opponent, Sen, Barack Obama, attended a "secular madrassa" as a child.
** to the folks who state they want people who commit crimes to be locked up - that is not true, go to any courthouse in any city, county or state, and white folks do not get locked up for crimes, they get probation, check out white drug use, they go to rehab they do not go to jail.  Now if you want all the drug users and pushers to get locked up, close every college in this country pull all the rich kids out of their homes, also pull radio personalities like Rush Limbaugh, and pull all the over the counter drug addicts and I hate to tell you that 90% of the users and the druggies are white, if you are ready for that, or ready for the isalmic punishment, get ready it is going to be your mother, father, sister, brothers, aunts and the folks that are running all parts of corporate america and the government.

With regards to who these dems should have as a running mate, don't look at each other look at a person with military background.  All of these candidates are civilians, they need a retired military officer.

You guys need to think about this running for public office and what it will take to win.

any way best to you.
"John Edwards is the only one that gives us a chance to win the White House in November. Both Obama and Hillary dont stand a chance to win in the south. Only Edwards will win the south. He is the only one that will kick the coporate out of Washington. Go Edwards to the White House"

Sean, tell me, how many southern states did Edwards deliver to the Democrats in the last presidential election when he was the VP nominee? Did he at the very least even deliver his own state? Lets break it down further. What was his record in winning southern states in the last democratic presidential primaries?
It will not take you long to add up on 1 fingernail the number of states to the above questions.
Lets be honest, in political terms, Edwards is a lightweight and against Huckabee, he will not carry the South, including his own state. He is no more experienced than Obama in that his only experience is as a Senator. His words and intentions are good but anyone who thinks he's just going to walk into the White House and all of a sudden, the interest groups are just going to lie down is dreaming. The only way you reduce such an influence is by inclusive negotiations.
I am supporting Hillary...she is smart, she is organized, she has the willingness to stick in there when she needs to.  I am excited to have her as my president.

There was one post that said it's not a good idea to say anything negative about Obama because he's black...surely I am reading this wrong.  Anything can be said about any of the other candidates but not Obama..if not then surely this country is not ready for a black to be in the whitehouse.
Why no mention that Edwards stumped across Iowa this weekend with the actor and singer Kevin Bacon (who brought his guitar)?  Could this be why he drew a bigger crowd in a larger venue than Obama?
Edwards is not prepared for a national campaign, so an Edwards win in Iowa will only help Hillary become the nominee.  Edwards has LESS experience in office than Obama.

Obama has turned down lucrative positions in order to help people and has passed legislation to improve government, to make our country more fair and just, and to provide health insurance to children.  Obama is the real deal.
HERE HERE XENA!!! I SECOND THAT COMMENT AS A MILITARY MAN, THE FOUNDING FATHERS WOULD BE TURNING IN THEIR GRAVES...
Emmy,Rochester,MD If you look real close you'll see the difference.  Obviously we need a hugh shift in the character of a president. You are using the same lame excuse that most others use: Too soon, no experience.  That's exactly why we (blacks) are behind the eight ball now.  No confidence, afraid to be #1, scared to step out and speak first and true and say what needs to be SAID! You are the part of the can't do society.
Lynn Millington, If you like bush everything you have said carries bushes integrity and character with it.  Are you proud. I'd like to see you get invited to bushes whitehouse.  You deserve it!
