Lieberman, McCain endorsement

From NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli and NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
CONCORD, NH -- McCain called the endorsement by Joe Lieberman (I/D-CT) a “courageous act,” as the Arizona senator makes a last-minute push for independent voters in the Granite State.

McCain joked that he “put on my kneepads” and “kissed the ring” in soliciting Lieberman’s support. “I was a little reluctant to ask him, because I didn’t want him to do something that may cause any harm to his political future,” McCain told reporters in Concord. “I felt it would be impactful in the election otherwise I wouldn’t ask for it.”

For his part, Lieberman said he thought he’d wait until after the primary to make an endorsement, but responded when McCain asked. “None of the Democratic candidates asked for my support, and John McCain did,” he told reporters after announcing his endorsement in Hillsborough.

The “Independent/Democrat” also said McCain is “the strongest candidate on security of all the candidates running.” Lieberman added, “Unless the Democratic candidate for president can convince the American people that he or she will protect them in a time of war, they’re going to have a hard time getting elected. I worry that Democratic candidates in the primary have been drawn so far left that in the general election, it’s going to be hard to convince a lot of people in the middle.”

Asked how endorsing a Republican would affect his status in the Democratic caucus, Lieberman said that is “up to the Democratic caucus.” “I mean I am an Independent Democrat,” he said, adding with a smile: “I am the 51st vote.” He also ruled out the possibility of running as McCain’s running mate. “I’m happy being a senator,” he said.

When a reporter asked McCain if he would run as an Independent if he lost the Republican nomination, the senator joked "maybe as a vegetarian." After a few stammered no's, McCain firmly said, "I could see no way that I would do such a thing like that."

Lieberman also said he would not be interested in running as an Independent for the presidential race if McCain lost the Republican ticket. "I've had my fill of national politics except to occasionally support a candidate."

McCain also denied that he would ask Lieberman to join him as a vice presidential candidate if he were to win the election. Instead, McCain is taking each day one at a time. "We've got a long way to go. I'm not trying to show you exuberance or overconfidence. We've got a long way to go and we'll be working hard."

In Concord, McCain also announced the support of a coalition of Independent voters in New Hampshire. “I believe that we will carry as we did in 2000 an overwhelming majority of independent voters,” McCain said.

Polling has shown, however, that most undeclared voters here will choose a Democratic ballot. And with the race between Clinton and Obama tightening significantly in recent weeks, most believe it will continue to be a main attraction for those voters. McCain said he disagreed with that assessment.

“I don’t think we are gonna know how the Independents will swing until very shortly before the election,” he said. “Part of it also very frankly is how you campaign. I’ve gotta convince the Independent voters, who might be tending towards voting in the Democratic primary, that it’s far more important to vote for me.”

McCain also this morning held a town hall meeting at Lincoln Financial Group in Concord, where he touted his streak of newspaper endorsements. “We are on a roll,” he said. “Des Moines Register, Boston Globe. Boston Globe and I don’t always agree on everything, but I’m appreciative of the fact that they would do that.”

McCain touts his own ability to work across the aisle to produce results and believes his record doing so will sway voters his way. At the town hall, McCain repeated that people often ask him why Congress cannot "stop all this bickering and fighting and at least get a budget." "My friends, I'll preserve my conservative credentials," McCain promised, "but I have a history of reaching across the aisle and working with the other party and I will continue to do that. Because you want me to get things done for America."

McCain gets on his knees and begs Lie-berman for his support?  Is this how he'll govern?  Get on his knees and beg to people like the Iranian President, Hugo Chavez, and Kim Jong Il?
Traitor.
The Democratic Party is now the party of Joe Lieberman, Hillary Clinton and Norman Tsu... how pathetic?
Joe Lieberman hasn't been a REAL Democrat in a long, long time..that's probably the reason he LOST the Democratic Primary in his re-election. NEWS FLASH: We don't want you, we don't claim you, Joe. Maybe if McCain's lucky, he can finish "in a 3-way tie for 3rd place," like you.
"Polling has shown, however, that most undeclared voters here will choose a Democratic ballot. And with the race between Clinton and Obama tightening significantly in recent weeks ..."
--Strangely enough given their policy differences, John McCain's hopes are probably largely dependent on a Barack Obama's downfall (ironically more than his own party), as bipartisan support: independents of all sides and democrats seem to lean Obama's direction.

"Lieberman said ...“None of the Democratic candidates asked for my support, and John McCain did,”"
--I can here Lieberman's consoling voice saying 'Ohhhh, how saaad.'     :  0
Joe "Zel Miller Checking In" Lieberman's endorsement of John McCain should surprise no one!! This is just his most recent slap in the face to the Party he claims to be a member of!! While his "Independent" status was clearly a calculated move to ensure he "stayed around,” because no one's more important in Joe's mind than Joe, he’s a neo conservative like President Stupid!!

While he "promised to caucus with the Democrats,” he’s proved over and over again to be the “Judas” of the Democratic Party!! He's no more an "Independent Democrat" than George W. Bush is a "compassionate conservative!!"

The following quote sums up the new "Judas Lieberman" perfectly:

"There is no doubt that he is more closely aligned to McCain than anyone running for President." Yes, his continued support of the Iraq occupation has shown his betrayal to Party and country over and over again!!

His placement of "self before country" began during the 2000 election, when as Al Gore's running mate, he campaigned on a platform of attacking then President Bill Clinton, stating on umpteen occasions across the country, he (Bill Clinton) had "disgraced the Oval Office."

Way to go Joe!!  Not only did he misread Bill Clinton’s soaring popularity and approval rating, he clearly demonstrated the first signs of his ego and how far he was willing to go to triumph while betraying his own Party!! I blame Judas Lieberman for much of 2000 also and always have!!

Joe Lieberman has now solidified the name that most aptly describes him, “Judas Lieberman!!”
Pat from New York, your obvious ignorance to the issues at hand show through your childish assumption that John McCain will bow/ beg leaders of other nations. To draw such conclusions would be to say that Hillary would let a major attack slide on the U.S. Because of Slick Willie's scandal back in the 90's. Going by the same logic in fact would be conclude (and some people do) That Obama would be a bad candidate because of the fact that he admitted to drug usage. Everyone looks at every little thing to pick at presidential candidates about, but can anyone here give me one concrete political reason (besides flip flopping on votes, thats just getting annoying hearing about who voted for the iraqi war, we'll touch on that in a moment) that one candidate is better than the other, or do we all make our assumptions based off of what your friend or classmate tells you. Obama is black so we cannot elect him, Hillary is a woman so we cannot elect her, And McCain is a war junkie so we cannot elect him. These stereotypes are what drive politics into simple child games... So Pat you don't want a president who wil bow to others or 'get down on thier knees and kiss the ring' Well you have one of those in office so far, and tell me one good thing that we have gotten out of Governor Bush's administration that A) has truly benefited us (results outweighed the cost) and B) is truly a lasting issue. John McCain has my vote purely for the fact that he has enough of a gut and backbone to stand against somewhat popular opinion AND back it up with facts, acknowledging that the wars are necessary at this part but just largely mishandled. I wish that people with ignorance on issues would have to go to a common sense rehab before you are allowed to help determine the fate of our country...
"I didn’t want him to do something that may cause any harm to his political future,”

LOL...When are we bombing Iran Johnny?
Lieberman is a traitor to the Democratic Party.  It is bad enough he pretends to be a Democrat, when really he isn't,  and now he endorses McCain!  Not that his endorsement will do McCain any good.  To me it is like one LOSER endorsing Another..
I wish that someone could tell me when the Pledge of Allegiance began to be to our party instead of to our nation.  Who the heck cares what party a person belogns to.  We'd be better off w/o either; they're just 2 really large corporations preying on the citizens of this country.  I'm proud of anyone willing to go across the aisle and work w/ their countrymen for what they believe to be best for this nation.
Lieberman has been independant for quite a while in terms of his thinking.  I think he is one of many people that can't be described as solely liberal or conservative.  If things trend the way that they do, Lieberman might just want to switch parties at some point in the next few years.

I would have preferred that Lieberman stayed out of this for some time until more of the candidates have weeded out of the running.

McCain will cot tow to thise leaders, because he's a wimp! He gave up in Vietnam and let himself get captured.  Little is known about the extent of the torture he suffered, but it's known that he caved in after only about 5 minutes of waterboarding.  He's a phony and America should wake up!

Sorry, you are wrong... Lieberman may be a traitor to the FAR LEFT of the Democratic Party, the ones who helped Ned Lamont squeek out a primary win. When it came to the General election, Lamont was CRUSHED.
We are more centist than that in Connecticut.

I am a long time Connecticut Democrat and I hope nobody believes for a minute that Chris Dodd is the center of the Democratic Party.
Dodd sold out Joe Lieberman to get "Move On" money for his (failed) presidential bid. He has taken up temporary residence in Iowa, like he had a temporary friendship for Joe. Did you think Joe would endorse Dodd?
Lieberman says what he belives and is willing to risk re-election for his principles. Unlike so many politicians who are beholding to the latest poll.

By the way, did Ned Lamont renew his membership to the exclusive Greenwich, Connecticut Country club after he lost the election?

MCain and Lieberman are two of the most honorable men in all of politics. Two true statesmen. It makes sense that these men of conviction would end up supporting aligning themselves with each other.

Pat you are a MORON !!
HE didn't ;give up'
He was shot down
And he resisted his Vietanmese captors
To denigrate this is cowardly on your part

I don't like McCain or any other war mongers (including Clinton)....
But, he did serve his country.....

What, exactly have YOU done for your country ?
(other than blogging in support of a corrupt, incompetent clown like Hillary ?

Why would anybody voluntarily undergo waterboarding ?
McCain had enough integrity to oppose torture
That's exceptional for a Republican
Pat. The North Vietnamese didn't waterboard, that I know of.  They were partial to dislocating arm and leg joints, then popping the limbs back into the sockets. That's why all the POW's wobbled when they got off the flights that brought them out of Hanoi. McCain had broken limbs that were par for a violent ejection, then landing in a shallow lake in the Hanoi vicinity. Broken limbs are prime for torture in the fracture areas. You seem rather callous towards him. Are you perhaps, a Swift Boat Fan? (Kow Tow? Chinese: Kau Tau, a sign of respect and more sanitary than a handshake.)

Check out John McCain's hand in this photo at the top, and I think it's pretty evident why he got Lieberman's endorsement.  The whole photo is just wrong, don't let your children see.
joe makes me sick...he should change his name to bush or dick

Pat Huntington NY (Sent Monday, December 17, 2007 4:09 PM)"

He gave up in Vietnam because he LET himself be captured?!?!?  The man was floating in a lake in the middle of the capital of North Vietnam with both of his arms dislocated and a broken leg!  What the heck was he supposed to do?  And he was not waterboarded, he was hung from the rafters by his dislocated arms and beaten.  That makes him a phony and a wimp?

It is one thing to attack his positions on issues, or to attack Lieberman's choice of who to support.  But to make such a brazen personal attack on ANYONE, and to do so with incorrect information to boot, is pretty low.  ANY American, Republican or Democrat, who served his country and was beaten repeatedly in a POW camp deserves all of our respect for at least that if nothing else.  And he had a get out of jail free card and he never used it, instead being subjected to torture for five years.  For anyone who has never undergone torture themselves to call a POW a wimp for being tortured is beyond the pale.
Murphy, Manchester CT is exactly the kinda Dem that LIEberman is.  The kind that gets off on attacking other Dems.  And by supporting Repugs.  Murphy, the only reason that LIEberman won in CT, was because he lied and said he wanted to end the war, when he clearly didn't.  Additionally, had a serious Republican been on the ticket, LIEberman would have lost.  But, considering the Republican had a gambling problem and no money, all the Repubs voted for LIEberman.  Lamont would have won with 40% of the popular vote if the Republican had garnered just 25% of the vote (which is below average for a statewide contest in CT).   Instead of voting for their guy, they voted for the war monger, LIEbermnan.
Everytime Mccain says we are winning in Iraq the news gives a rundown of another miltary death. This guy does not know what he is talking about---------Course he never says what we are winning----must be the prize for the dumbing down of america.
Lieberman is a traitor, not to the democratic party, but to the United States.  He's representing Israel's right wing likud party....that's why he supports any candidate that wants to attack Iran and stay in Iraq.  Meanwhile Israel continues to defy UN resolutions and continue their apartheid ways.
Murphy, Manchester wrote: > McCain and Lieberman are two of the most honorable men in all of politics.  It makes sense they would end up supporting themselves with each other"?? --I still say,  "to me it is like one LOSER endorsing Another LOSER."
We have a new third Party. The "AIPAC Isreal First" Party. AmeriKa worry not, we will send your childrend off to die in war, yout taxes to support endless occupation and murder, oh and we will let Jonathan Pollard out as well. Please support The "AIPAC Isreal First" Party's ticket McCain/Liberman, if not we will "bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb, you too"

McCains beloved "kneepads" are very worn out from all his visits to AIPAC to get his orders. He is a traitor to the US people. Joe doesnt hide his policy of "America is a host country to Isreal". Send these two to Gaza to fight for THEIR country.
Both kiss bushes @ss and macain tougne kisses him thats the direction the same ole same ole.
Joe is the best triangulator around, This endorsment will not help McCain, in fact it may push many repubs away and Joe is not the god of the independents or raygun dems. He is a voice in the wilderness, shouting at the trees in order to hear his own echos. Joes 'one man caucus' is more flim-flam than fabulous, this will change nothing and Joe will slowly fade into the sunset of his own making. No principaled leaders here folks just two senators kissing each others butts.

It's arrogant people like this that just never seem to get it. John McCain has forgotten more then a thousand people like this have ever even known. John McCain understands what needs to be done to fight global terrorism, and he also knows the sacrifices required to win that war. As he has said, he'd rather "Lose and election then lose a war", and McCain is correct. Casualties are a part of this war, and each is tragic. But people like McCain know that not doing something now will be even more tragic in the longer term.

So people that cannot see beyond the end of their nose take their little shots at a great American such as McCain, and I guess that makes them feel better in some twisted way. What McCain believes may not be popular, but it is right.
How ridiculous to see Lieberman being called things like "traitor" and "Judas" by certain of us here. You may not agree with the guy's politics, you may not like him personally, whatever...but you have to, or at least should, respect the fact that he was willing to cross party lines to do what he believed was right, unlike so many of those mindless slaves in Congress who don't see any further than their next party conference. I fel the same way when Repubs and Dems joined over immigration reform, or when the "Gang of 14" got together to move a stalled Congress forward. I didn't necessarily like their positions on immigration or other issues, but I appreciated their willingness to bridge the aisle when they thought it was right or necessary to get things done.

Stop riding this guy for being willing to work with both sides of the aisle. Contrary to the apparently general sentiments among many here, all Republicans aren't little Satans hellbent on world destruction, and not all of us (Dems) are saints. There are plenty of good Republicans, and plenty of Democratic idiots, many of whom, unfortunately, seem to have a remarkable tendency to post on these webpages.

Grow up, people. Skewer Lieberman for his views and/or policies, but not because he's willing to cross the aisle. In doing so, you show nothing but your own partisan ignorance.
Lieberman, a traitor to his party? No way, the Dems betrayed him!

I respect a guy who obeys his conscience and does what's right, even when that means doing the politically risky thing. Joe Lieberman stands for doing what's right, even if that means crossing party lines. And that's not treason, that's true loyalty to this country!

btw, John McCain is the only GOP candidate who has a snowflake's chance in hell of winning the general election against the Democrats. No wonder rabid Dems are angry at Lieberman's endorsement.
