Mari Culver endorses Edwards

DES MOINES, IA -- Iowa’s first lady, Mari Culver, endorsed Edwards at a rally at the Temple for Performing Arts here this afternoon. She spent her first moment at the podium applauding the field of candidates vying for the nomination.

“Like you, however, I can only select one candidate to stand with on January 3,” she said, taking a breath.

“You got the right one!” a man in the crowd yelled, setting off a new round of cheers from the mostly union crowd.

“And that is why today, I publicly announce my support for John Edwards for president,” she finished.

Culver said she chose Edwards because she has a long-standing relationship with the former senator and agrees with his stances on the issues. She said he comes with an added bonus -- his wife Elizabeth, who introduced Culver -- and that he is a candidate who can inspire people. “Most importantly, I believe John Edwards can win,” the first lady said. “Not just the caucuses but the general election, too. He’s ready. He’s been battle-tested. He’s been through this before, having been on our national ticket.”

The former senator was as effusive in his gratitude for Culver’s endorsement. “Here is a woman who doesn’t just talk the talk. She walks the walk,” Edwards began. He told of a visit he and Culver had paid to a homeless shelter that morning where workers and families had recognized the first lady from previous visits.

The endorsement was not surprising in light of the ties between Edwards and Gov. Chet Culver. Edwards campaigned for then-Secretary of State Culver during his 2006 run for governor. Jen O’Malley, Edwards’ Iowa state director, married Gov. Culver’s chief of staff, Patrick Dillon, this summer. (Dillon also worked for the Edwards campaign in 2004.) Brad Anderson, Culver’s communications director, worked on Edwards’ 2004 presidential run and his 1998 Senate run.

What’s debatable is how much influence the endorsement will have. In 2004 Christie Vilsack’s endorsement of John Kerry was seen as a catalyst to his win. But at that time, her husband had been governor since 1998, and his wife was well-known to Iowans. Mari Culver, a lawyer who has two young children, said that she would be willing to help however her schedule allows. After the event, Culver said that making an ad for Edwards had not yet been discussed, but she ruled out the possibility of a repeat of the “big lug” ad she cut for her husband last year.

so what ?
Great endorsement for JRE.  I think that she made the right choice.  I also think that her endorsement will make a difference.  Iowans will pay attention to this.
Anything else?
Zzzzzzzzzzzzz.......who?
Well John Edwards is well liked in Iowa, and so this won't hurt him.  That is for sure.  Especially from  a leading woman in the state.
I believe that John Edwards is the one candidate that will put America, and Americans first.  I also hope he bans all private lobbying.  We need to know who our representatives are talking to.

Great!!!!!!!!!! Go Johnny Go !!!!!!!!!!

The candidate of "One America" People are now hearing what he says and taking heed for a man of change. Not politics as usual.
So What????
The media has been so busy tell the public that the race has already been won by Clinton or Obama. The best candidate, John Edwards, message to America is only now being heard. Only when the USA care more about our future instead of Paris Hilton's night life, will this country get back on track.
Today, I am proud to announce, that I am officially endorsing Jenna Bush!

edwards earns his endorsements with integrity, he doesn't have to by them with dirty lobbyist cash like hillary, edwards is the most experienced candidate with the best plans for our nation, with the citizens concerns at heart, for a change
Has the governor of Iowa endorsed anyone?  If he has, who was it and why did the husband and wife disagree?  I'd like to know why they are differing.  I don't know if that would make any kind of difference unless the first lady of the state is well liked and her opinion is held in high regard.
Well, Paul a woman endorsed someone other than Bilary see some women can think for themselves.  Put a fork in Clinton she is done!
"Has the governor of Iowa endorsed anyone?  If he has, who was it and why did the husband and wife disagree?  I'd like to know why they are differing.  I don't know if that would make any kind of difference unless the first lady of the state is well liked and her opinion is held in high regard."

-The Governor has not endorsed anyone, this is his way of officially supporting a candidate - through his wife.  This is not atypical.  Good for John Edwards!
Well deserved endorsement of a great candidate!
John Edwards is a good man !!
Great endorsement !!

I hope it doesn't detract from any other recent endorments.....

(sorry, Hillary, DMR)
Think Democrats. Would you rosk another election to a candidate who cannot even deliver his HOMESTATE in the last election? He was given his chance in both the senate and as a candidate. WHAT DID HE DO? WHAT DID HE ACCOMPLISH IN THE SENATE? ...... He voted in favor of free trade in China. He acted critical of offshore tax shelters for the wealthy in 2004, and then in 2005 he worked as a consultant for the Fortress Investment Group whose hedge funds were incorporated in the Cayman Islands. He voted in favor of the 2001-2002 bankruptcy reform bill which has hurt many lower income families in this country.
and most importantly, he voted in favor of authorizing the Iraq war. THINK DEMOCRATS. Can we risk and afford to loose another election......
When are you Edwards supporters finally gonna realize that John is going NOWHERE after Iowa.  He's a nice man, and I surely did support him the last time around, but where do you think his support in other states is going to come from?  Thin Air?  Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but this is the truth.
modernwoman, Anytown,USA / whatever 'modern woman', it's a fact edwards does better against all the repub candidates nation wide, although the media keeps it quiet, he's the only dem that can win the general election despite his lack of mommy parts
Yup modernwoman because John Kerry had tons of support in other states before Iowa.  Granted different election but it's without a doubt possible.
Who the HELL has ever heard of Mari Culver?  I mean, who CARES?  Her husband's been governor for all of a minute.  She's no one.
Well Mary in Des Moines...we won't "LOOSE" another election with Edwards...try "LOSE" and the answer is still NO, and we won't.  If you check the polls of which candidate has the best chance of beating EVERY Republican that person is John Edwards.  He'll win Iowa and finally get the media attention he deserves.  Remember how far down Kerry was before Iowa?
This country cannot get back on track until all the money given to our government leaders gets out of the system.  If John Edwards can win Iowa, he could roll onward based on his platform of fighting for the little people ...who by the way are pretty angry right now about their lot in life.  He will be "owned" by no one, unlike many other candidates.
I have to say that he is a good candidate with good ideas, but after Iowa he does not have a lot of traction. I wouldn't mind an Obama/Edwards ticket, though.
Iowa people have no idea just who the first lady is, I did not even know we had one. So much for the Dem leadership in Iowa, say nothing, do nothing and come out at election time.
great news----John can do it----If he wins Iowa the money will come in---I like them all but John is the only one I have donated to.
I think this endorsement carries more weight than the DMR endorsement, so congrats to Edwards.

I hate to say it, but I agree with modernwoman in that Edwards has no where to go, even if he should win Iowa. I don't think it would translate into an Edwards win in New Hampshire or South Carolina, and I think the South Carolina result - coupled with the realization that he probably wouldn't win in North Carolina either - would end his campaign.

Its strange because he's the best speaker of the group, but I don't see how he lasts after Iowa if he loses there, and if he wins, it will end in South Carolina.
Great endorsement for Edwards. I can hardly wait until Jan 3!
I'm getting very tired of the blog-corps from other candidates coming out online to diss our Edwards with the same old, and sometimes false, information.  Try using something "off" script next time.

This is a great endorsement, and he deserves it cuz he will be a great president.  Try to discredit it all you like, but for the race in Iowa, this is a good thing.

If anyone would like to know more about Edwards' campaign, check out his website.  Try to find another candidate who has done as much work towards truly fixing our nation's problems as much as he has.
Though I am an Obama supporter I think this is great for  Edwards.  I think 'good for him and congrats!'
"Granted different election"
Chris

Indeed, John Kerry was NOT taking public money to finance his campaign which meant he could raise a boat load of money fast.  Edwards cannot do that because he IS taking public money.  Also the primary schedule has become MUCH MORE CONDENSED than it was in 2004, placing even more of a premium on having boat loads of money to be competitive AFTER IOWA.  Finally, even though Kerry came out of third to win Iowa, he ALSO had the advantage of being in second place in NH at the time, whihc meant the momentum from Iowa could move him faster and farther in NH than it can for Edwards who is a distant third (oh, not to mention the fact that in 2004 their were eight days between Iowa and NH, now there is only five).
"If he wins Iowa the money will come in"

HMT-MI

Unfortunately, Edwards could not take that money when it comes in becasue he has opted to take public financing for his campaign.  Once he did that he could no longer take private donations from individuals, etc.,.  Simply put, he is permanently at a financial disadvantage coming out of Iowa.
I'm from NC, supported Edwards in past but no longer because he's done NOTHING for NC.  People want ideas, passion plus experience and a good reference from the home state. Edwards only has the first two. Things to consider:
1.Clinton and Obama have decades of public service (in politics and otherwise), Edwards does not.
2. While Edwards was working to make himself rich, OTHER North Carolinians were fighting the special interests, the big corporations, helping to get health-care for low-income kids, fighting predatory lending, etc etc etc. Edwards did not have a hand in those fights or any other (to include unions of which NC has few). He has no record of marshalling any cause from idea to completion.
3. He likes to point out that he started two programs for low-income kids. Both are small programs, affecting a very small percentage of kids. One of them is currently begging for basic supplies like pens, papers and snacks for the kids.
4. He has made all his money off corporations. (No big corporations, no big paychecks for lawyers like Edwards.) Has has he fought corporate welfare here? no. predatory lenders? no. The hog industry that has done so much harm to NC? no. NO record of taking on the corps outside a courtroom. He says he's against the big-monied special interests yet as far as I know he's never been a member of the many groups that have worked for decades against that sort of thing.
5. Edwards has only held one seat (not even PTA), an easy win against a curmudgeon Forbes dubbed "senator for sale."
6. While in office, Edwards abandoned his constituents and responsibilities to his state halfway through that term to campaign for himself. He left that seat up for grabs, and it was retaken by the Republicans, to the great irritation of many Dems--we won't forgive him for that.
7. He has no record of accomplishment in politics. NONE. He could have used his new national influence to influence our Governor on things like corporate welfare, but hasn't.
8. Studies show most low-income and lower-middle class folks give a greater percentage of their income to charity than higher income folks. The theory is that they do so because they know what it's like to live so close to the edge. Therefore, the percentage of Edwards income that he gives to charity would be like the low-income people he alleges to identify with--and his campaign would be quick to say that. They haven't, proving in my mind that he's a hypocrite.
9. Unlike most of the progressive lawyers in NC, Edwards has never contributed substantially--in bro bono time or money--to the agency that provides civil legal services to poor people. In fact, he contributes less that most lawyers.
10.  Why didn't he build a "modest" 1.5 million house instead of 6.5 million, and give that $5 million to charity? There are some charities in NC that could subsist on that amount for 83 years.
NO, I can't support someone who is all talk, no action.
I believe John Edwards should have been the Democratic nominee in 2004, and he was the reason I thought so highly of the Kerry/Edwards Ticket.  The time is NOW to get America back on track!  Congratulations on your endorsement, John Edwards!

John Edwards cannot lead the democratic ticket.

Edwards can catch fire after Iowa.  Two weeks before the Iowa caucuses, Kerry was polling around 11% nationally, behind Dean (24%) and ...wait for it ... Wes Clark!  Kerry had only soft support till he came roaring out of Iowa.  A lot of people really like John Edwards, but we've been told for months now that it's a two person race.  Iowa, prove the corporate media wrong and give us the best democrat to nominate.  Go Edwards!

Please, please support John Edwards our country needs him during this time of crisis.  The only honest one besides Edwards in Biden.

Obama is the senator from my state, he is sure for illegas and big business.  Not done anything for us.
Okay, first, Edwards did not run for re-election to the Senate from North Carolina, and exit polls showed he would have won if he had.  Second, he didn't "carry" the state because he didn't campaign there; the Kerry handlers wrote off the south early on, and not many people vote for the VP if they don't like the guy at the top of the ticket.  (Heck, Al Gore couldn't carry Tennessee when his name was at the top of the ticket.)  I made calls for Kerry last time around, and here in the CRITICAL swing state of Ohio I couldn't believe how many times people told me they wished Edwards was the nominee.  Come on, caucusers, give us the guy who can actually win the general election this time--a good-looking, charismatic southerner with empathy and new ideas ... and a strong moral fiber as well.
Go to this website and check out the number of bills sponsored by each senator in the race: http://thomas.loc.gov/bss/d110/sponlst.html John Edwards was among the least active Senators during his time in office. In a 2 year period from 2001-2002, John Edwards ranked 90th among the 100 Senators in number of bills sponsored. How can he expect to lead this country as president, when he was FAR from a leader in the Senate during his time in office? I think this should be raised as an issue and I would like John Edwards to explain why we should vote for him when his rivals have clearly worked much harder for the American people while in office. Now I do realize that the number of bills sponsored does not necessarily correlate to the overall quality of a Senator, but I think a 6 year trend of ranking near the bottom is very telling and warrants, at the very least, an explanation.
Yes!!! Go "amigo" Edwards you can do it!! Si se puede!!

Latinos for Edwards.
I'm a county Dems chair from New Hampshire.  In our one city, Laconia, each of the three leading Dems has an office, with a lot of healthy volunteer effort out of each.  I support Edwards. The news of Iowa's First Lady giving Edwards her endorsement is music to my ears.  As Dr. Helen Caldicott told us at the November NH-AFSC Annual Meeting, Edwards has the right approach to energy production - no new nuclear plants.  He's THE ONE of the top three who realizes the biological hazards of man-made radiation. The other two "are ignorant" this great lady said.  Of course, the other two take industry money, and Edwards does not.  He's our President who will not put public dollars into industry hands for new nuclear plants, when we can't handle the waste we have now.  It's forwards to the future, with Edwards, not back to the past and its energy production losers.
I do think Edwards has a chance. Even though the polls don't reflect this, all the dems still have a chance (except Dennis of course). Anyone who compares this election with the last misses some major points.
The dynamics are different all over the place, a president is not running, the repub machine is broken and fear tactics are decidedly not going to work, The dems are not beating each other up as bad as people and the media want us to believe, the economy is tanking, and Georgie did us a favor by picking Dick as VP. There are also many people sitting on the fence, waiting to see where Iowa goes. It is still a very fluid race.
Just what we needed to turn a three way race into a one man race ... the only candidate SURE to beat GULLE in the general election ...  JOHN EDWARDS.

President Edwards ? .. Just sounds RIGHT .. doesn't it.
JOHN EDWARDS will win BIG in Iowa because he represents the "little guy", and NOT the corporate interests, the lobbyists, big OIL, Halliburton, and the like.

The morally bankrupt Republicans and their allies in the biased mass media would LOVE to run against "Billary" Clinton or Hussein Obama, because they know they would defeat Clinton or Obams, but would have NO chance against Edwards.
THE LAST PRESIDENT THAT STOOD UP FOR THE LITTLE GUY WAS KILLED IN HIS THIRD YR IN OFFICE .J.F.K , EVEN SO I WOULD TAKE 3 GOOD YEARS RIGHT NOW COMPARED TO THE LAST 7YRS . JUST HOPE THE ELECTROL VOTES DONT TAKE AWAT OUR VOTES ONCE MORE . GO EDWARDS GO
WITH EDWARDS , THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY WILL BECOME "DEMOCRATIC" AGAIN AND NOT JUST REPUBLICAN LITE. JOHN EDWARDS WILL TRULY REPRESENT EACH AND EVERY MAN. THE FIRST LADY OF IOWA KNOWS HER STUFF. JOHN EDWARDS IS TRULY "PRESIDENTIAL" SOMETHING WE HAVEN'T SEEN IN QUITE A FEW YEARS.
