Paul talks respect, cash, legalizing hemp

Posted: Monday, December 17, 2007 4:23 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann and NBC's Andy Merten
DES MOINES, IA -- For Ron Paul, it's about respect.

After a record $6 million-dollar haul from a single day of fundraising yesterday, Paul says that his campaign is gaining steam and his message is showing its resonance. And, he says, he's finally getting some street cred.

"Actually, there's a better rapport now with other Republicans when I go on the House floor," he said in response to a question about how fellow Republicans are reacting to his alternative anti-war message. "I think they respect fundraising. And their antennas are up!"

"They're having trouble raising money," he added. "So there's some respect for this."

Paul's record-breaking fundraising haul -- almost entirely organized online by activists not directly connected to the campaign -- is raising eyebrows here in Iowa, where Paul could potentially be a spoiler to a more mainstream candidate if he finds a way to mobilize his supporters. With the big bucks, he said, "we'll continue to buy television, do a lot of radio, a lot of direct mail."

Paul also said that the "surprising" take lends some legitimacy to his run, but that it's disheartening that it's only cash that has attracted media attention. "It looks to me like money talks," he said. "I'd like to think ideas talk."

The Texas congressman, who held a brief press conference here to address his fundraising, said that he may not have enough time to “harness all this momentum and all this money coming in” before Iowa, but that he believes his campaign is now in “good shape” to last through the February 5th primaries and caucuses.

Asked how he expects to do in the Iowa caucuses, Paul replied, “I think we’re going to do well,” he said. “I’m not making any predictions; I’d be very disappointed if I came in last, of course.”

Despite the new respectability, Paul's not letting his less conventional side go. Responding to a question about ethanol subsidies, he demonstrated the free-hearted sentiment that has garnered support among libertarians and new young voters. "I think there's a chance that you might get more ethanol if you raised hemp," he responded. "But hemp is illegal in this country. So in my idea of a free society, a farmer would be allowed to raise hemp."

"Not only would that be a good product possibly to make ethanol," he concluded excitedly. "There might be a whole lot of other products you could make with hemp. Like the Canadians do!"

Paul also repeated that he has no plans to run as an independent, should he not win the GOP nomination.

I'm a Obama supporter, but you no I like alot of what Ron Paul says, unfortanatly alot of what he says scares me too.I wish him luck though. But I have this to say no matter who wins this thing, if you look at the support of Ron Paul and Obama and to some extint Edwards and maybe even Huckabee (I haven't really followed him), I hope it tells the politications in Washington people are sick of politics as usual!!!
I wonder how much time Paul has spent in Iowa.  Everyday in the local Cedar Rapids paper, they track the candidates who are going to be in the eastern Iowa.  I noticed Ron Paul today, and it occurred to me that I don't think I have seen his name very much at all.

Face time is very important in Iowa.  I hope Ron Paul remembers that when he is paying for his radio and TV ads.
Paul wouldn't have a candidacy if it wasn't for Alex Jones. Alex Jones makes Michael Moore look like Dick Cheney. He's out there....way out there.

I wonder what would happen if the Ron Paulers actually thought about what would happen if we abolished the federal education funding.

Ron Paul seems half as crazy as the other GOP candidates, that still means he's 50% crazy.

Sure he doesn't support the war, but his platforms are nutty and he is the GOPs mirror image of Dennis Kucinich.

Every now and again a few good points, but come on the guy believes in aliens. (not saying this is a quality argument, however, it's an argument that will not lose with the majority of American voters, it's neither Paul nor Kucinich's fault, but rather a sign of the times).
Dr. Paul, the establishment anathema, is irrefutably rising...

http://truthalert.net/Republican%20Presidential%20Candidate%20Rankings.htm
WELL I KIND OF LIKE HIM, HAVEN"T STUDIED HIS PLATFORM YET THO BUT I WILL, IF HILLARY DON'T GET IT I WILL CHANGE MY TICKET
Is truthalert a 911 troofer site, mike?
From the above comments it is clear they don't understand what Dr. Ron Paul stands for. This is because the main stream media (owned by "big money") don't report on Dr. Ron Paul's issues. To form a real balanced opinion please go to lewrockwell.com and ronpaulforpresident2008.com. Dr. Ron Paul is the only candidate that makes perfect sence my friends, just give your self some time to study him and you will be part of the Revolution, just like millions of fellow Americans. After your study nobody will call a candidate that support the United States Constitution crazy.
"I wonder what would happen if the Ron Paulers actually thought about what would happen if we abolished the federal education funding."

Kids would actually know how to read and do math without a calculator?

The only thing federal funds do is create a self feeding monster of paperwork and useless jobs.
Anybody in the know who actually cares about this country and has heard what Dr. Paul has to say, seems to instantly jump on the bandwagon. When 3 veterans of the Iraq war cornered me about the issues and showed me Dr. Paul, i was hooked in an instant. This man is a blessing to this nation. Thank God for Dr. Ron Paul, future president!
Want hemp grown by farmers here in the U.S.?

Ask your U.S. Representative in Congress to cosponsor HR 1009:

Thanks,

Tom

Dr. Paul is a gyno, but it sounds scientific though.
What a joke, abolish federal funding for schools...
GAME OVER
abolish federal funding for schools...
say that you want to do this to anyone besides a Paul nut and see what they say to you. They'll tell you to take a flying leap.

Do you believe that this should happen Mike, from Hermosa Beach?
I can't even register the level of contempt and condescension that I feel is necessary when talking with you idiots.
I hope more people learn about Dr. Ron Paul. I miss having my civil liberties and I am disgusted with the way our Bill of Rights has been violated. Amendments 4,5,9,and 10 have all been violated and that is just off the top of my head. Ron Paul has a deep understanding about our economic crisis, foreign relations, and our constitution. His voting record is the most consistant against over taxation and over government spending. People that want to learn about our constitution and state sovereignty should seriously investigate for themselves and not rely on others to do their research for them.
As a meetup organizer for Ron Paul I can tell you firsthand the support does not come from any one place, that's what makes it so great.

We have disenfranchised Taft/Goldwater conservatives who voted for Bush and feel they were duped

Disenfranchised Democrats who are tired of being lied to about stopping the war

Disenfranchised independents who chose a candidate, not a party.

I think we have a couple truthers, although they never bring it up at any events.

Before Ron Paul, get all of these people in a room discussing politics, they'd be at each others throats. By themselves, we are each 5 to 10% at best. But together, we can do anything.

The revolution is real.
@Desperate

Nutty?  Only if the Constitution is nutty.
Look, Paul is a realist.  He has said on many occasions that he would not abolish those entitlement programs that people have become reliant upon.  Additionally, since he believes in the Constitution (unlike many seeking the high office) he would need approval of Congress to make any sweeping change.

I find his ideas refreshing and if just some would rub off to re-instate our civil liberties, reduce the government, and stop policing the world, I'd be happy.

I predict Paul supporters will be those in the majority to brave the cold and vote in the many Primaries.  Be prepared to be surprised!
Michael Moore meet Dick Cheney?  Left nut, meet right nut.

That's the whole problem.  Who represents those in between.
The numbers are impressive, I have to admit. I never thought he'd do this well.

Desperate - what exactly would happen if we abolished federal education spending? Sure, I do realize that some things, particularly those affecting the less affluent areas, would not work as well. And I'm not advocating pulling money away from these school districts. But if that were to happen, what really do you think would be the impact?

I'm guessing not as much as your post would seem to suggest. The vast majority of school funding comes from local property taxes, and in most states the next biggest pot comes from state funds.

In all honesty, I'll bet the recent drop in housing values will cost school districts more than the entire federal contribution. And we all know that federal spending, while necessary for some 'balancing the playing field' programs, is pretty innefficient in terms of bang for the buck.

I also know that schools in most districts are pretty innefficient as well. I took a look at this in my school district about a year ago. I knew the ratio of teachers to students was 1:24 or so, and I don't begrudge teachers the salaries they make (higher here than the national average). But I wanted to see what else they spend money on.

To my surprise, teachers were swamped by administrators. The ratio there is something like an administrator for every six students. And outside of new school construction, salaries were the bulk of our budget.

I have a hard time believing so many administrators are needed. I suspect a lot of them were hired because the schools were flooded with money in the last decade and a half. Our property values during this time tripled, and 57 percent of our property taxes go to schools. The school district suddenly found itself in a position which we should never leave any government employee - with more money than they were expecting or knew what to do with.

They haven't saved a dime of all that extra money, still sent kids out door to door selling fundraisers, and presumably came up with all sorts of new ideas that required new administrators to implement. Now, of course, we've got a big budgetary proplem looming.
It doesnt take much to realize the main stream media doesnt care for Paul.  Just look at the list to your right.  Hardly anyone hears about him in a positive light either, it's always something negative. He is not part of the good ol' boys club. If your mind isn't made up, really research him with an open mind. Some of his ideas look impossible, but if you listen to the whole message it all makes sense.
The thing about Ron Paul is you don't get half measures, because the man has principles.

Opposed to the war?  Paul would pull the troops out.  Support Government aid for wounded veterans?  Oh dear.

Want drugs legalized?  Paul wants that too.  Want emergency Medicaid when you O-D?  Oh dear.

And so on.  Abolish the Income Tax?  Sure, says Paul on sound libertarian grounds.  Unionized workforces?  Unemployment Benefits?  Not so sure, on equally sound libertarian grounds.

Ron Paul tends to sound good to people who aren't listening properly to what he's telling them.  People who hear and understand Ron Paul and still approve are anarchists, at least in the short term.  It's a sad commentary but for Ron Paul's strict constitutionalism to be restored, we need a second revolution.
I think people need to listen to all of what he say's...A 72 year old man that you say is out there...Most of you won't live that long if something isn't done with our Government.

He's old enough to remember the stuggles of, and live through the Depression days, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He has been in the house for 32 years as a Congressman,(someone thinks he's right or they wouldn't have voted him into Congress so many times).

The path we are on will fail, It has been set up to fail) he knows that and so do you, and it dosn't take a hit from a Chinnese rifle, for me to know that.

We have been set up for the fall and won't except the truth. He dosn't have any reason to want to be President other than to protect Constitiution for you and me, can you say that about any of the other Canidates?

The primary is the most important part of the election....It allows us to have somewhat of a say on who is going to run in the General Election.
If it's not Ron Paul, you will be voting once again for the better of two worse in the General Election...AND NOTHING WILL CHANCE...They are counting on it.

They are stacking the deck and your not even smart enough to see that...
Why else would a 72 year old Statesman put himself through this meat grinder.

A Vote for anyone else is a waisted Vote....
Semper Fidelis
A Kucinich/Paul ticket might be good for America. I have a feeling, eight years from now, no matter which other Bozos get elected from either party, we'll look back on that ticket, and wish it would have happened. Space Invaders or not. Just an Independent observation.
Ron Paul is the only candidate capable of defeating the Democrats this election. Issues that affect the American People are important, but unfortunately, the only Republican coverage allowed on here are Neo-Cons like Huckabee (pro-illegal immigration), Rudy (anti-gun, pro-abortion, pro North American Union) and McCain (who has NO MONEY LEFT)

Of course they won't talk about Ron Paul, he's against corporate corruption: as opposed to Rudy, who is the son of a mob boss for crying out loud.

Google Ron Paul. Learn the truth. www.ronpaul2008.com
LOL Federal funding for school, RP isn't abolishing it. I see msnbc has their paid bloggers out.. Desperate, Overland Park KS  LOL nice name.
Desperate, Overland Park KS is a PAID MSNBC blogger fyi... just go to Ron Paul's website to view his viewpoints.
Come primary time - Ron Paul supporters will be out in massive numbers!

no child left behind is ruining the kids in this country. The fed gov should not be allowed in the classroom. The kids are being taught to take a test.thats it.I asked a few teachers in the city about this, and they say Ron Paul is right.every semester they have a few kids out  of a hundred that are doing poorly.they might show signs of a problem.the teachers are told not to report it and the kid falls through the cracks.they wont report it becouse they need their stats to look good.if the stats dont look good no federal funding! free the public school system. we arent even in the top 20 around the world.
The constitution if you've ever read it allows for the government to create federal programs for the good of the public.

I truly doubt that you Paulers have read the constitution the way that you speak about it. It's as if Paul has caught on to an interpretation of it that sooths you morons.

You poor peons really do need something to believe in...
the revolution this...
the revolution that...
A political campaign does not a revolution make...are you all aged out hippies or something.
Revolutions consist of people in the streets, speaking truth to power, occupying buildings, and taking back their country with force if necessary.
You all are whiners. I've talked to friends of mine who are Paulers. Your all conspiracy nuts.
I don't doubt your knowledge so much as I doubt your motivation. You whine and whine and whine, but in the end you will lose and you will do nothing about it. You are exactly like the hippies.
The Ron Paul hippies...the Rippies...the Pippies
I can't come up with a good name, but come on guys, Alex Jones is the only thing keeping Paul's candidacy alive.
If Paul had to disavow the truthers we could get back to business as usual, and the truthers with all of their facts (which hey I'm willing to listen to) will go back beneath the bridge like the trolls they are.
I can't see him winning, but at least he is making the race interesting.  It would be nice to see a non-establishment candidate make it for once, as long as they have good ideas.
Michael from Arlington,

Tell me where in the Constitution it says that we cannot fund federal education or health care for that matter.

I'll help you, you won't find it because it's not there the founding fathers and Adam Smith (creator of capitalism) noted that government programs would be necessary in instances where the free market failed or was uninterested in delivering services.

CAN ANY OF YOU READ?

Sure Paul is right about the war, torture, and the patriot act, but so are all of the Democratic candidates who maintain the same position as him.

The difference between the Dems and Paul...
Dems believe that we should have federal programs like FEMA, FBI, CIA, and yes our Federal Education system. Paul does not believe that we need these things. That would make him crazy. The constitution is far from nutty.
Does not matter for what reason, he is raising money and we know money talks in washington. He has raised more than alot of the so called contenders and that will eventually lead to politicans adopting some of his stands on issues. That is how they get elected, by supporting issues that people will pay money to support. A change is in the wind, I just wonder how long and hard it will blow. This comment is not an meant to promote Ron Paul, but a general observation.
For those who are afraid of losing what the federal government provides through the dept of education, remember that states, not the fed, pay the majority of the public school's expenses (including universities).  Shrinking the size of the federal government will mean less money will be sent to washington to be wasted.  More money will remain in your state and can be used to fund those schools.
"I wonder what would happen if the Ron Paulers actually thought about what would happen if we abolished the federal education funding."

Desparate - you are a wack job and uneducated. Ronald Reagan proposed abolishing fed education funding along with other worthless federal programs and he was very popular. Any loser politician can push for more spending programs in an attempt to buy votes. Does that impress you?

So what would happen if fed education funding was cut off? The vast majority of education funding comes at the state and local level. Cutting federal funds would only cost some bureaucrats their jobs. You would understand this is you were a taxpayer, employed, and marginally educated.
Paul on education:

The federal government does not own our children. Yet we act as if it does by letting it decide when, how, and what our children will learn. We have turned their futures over to lobbyists and bureaucrats.

I support giving educational control back to parents, who know their children better than any politician in D.C. ever will.

The federal government has no constitutional authority to fund or control schools. I want to abolish the unconstitutional, wasteful Department of Education and return its functions to the states. By removing the federal subsidies that inflate costs, schools can be funded by local taxes, and parents and teachers can directly decide how best to allocate the resources.

To help parents with the costs of schooling, I have introduced H.R. 1056, the Family Education Freedom Act, in Congress. This bill would allow parents a tax credit of up to $5,000 (adjustable after 2007 for inflation) per student per year for the cost of attendance at an elementary and/or secondary school. This includes private, parochial, religious, and home schools.

Another bill I have sponsored, H.R. 1059, allows full-time elementary and secondary teachers a $3,000 yearly tax credit, thus easing their financial burden and encouraging good teachers to stay in an underpaid profession.

Many parents have already shown their desire to be free of federal control by either enrolling their children in private schools or homeschooling them. And students enrolled in these alternatives have consistently performed better and tested higher than those in state-run schools.

Years of centralized education have produced nothing but failure and frustrated parents. We can resurrect our public school system if we follow the Constitution and end the federal education monopoly.
Desperate.  Think about what you are saying for a minute.  The school system is funded by your property taxes.  The school is funded at the LOCAL level.  Therefore we believe that the school should be responsible to the community and the parents who are funding the school.  There is no need for a federal bureacracy to suck up funds that could otherwise go to actually educating students.  Since the federal government became involved with the schools in the 50's, the quality of education has done nothing but go down while the cost continues to climb.  Get the Feds out of the way of our education system.  They don't add any value to it.
those that wish to grow hemp only do so in the hopes to smoke marijuana.  no one cares about any other use for hemp.  i would love to get rid of our public school system so that our children could get access to a better education but what difference would it make if everyone was smoking marijuana.  we would still end up surrounded by stupid idiots, but worse.  pot heads always stink.
My brother in Washington State is the one who first told me about Ron Paul. When I went to the website he directed me to, I was floored!  I am looking forward to the word getting out in California.  So many do not know who he is and what he stands for.  One thing is for certain...we need someone who stands for us and our rights.

By the way, ease up, buddy.
The ingnorance of some here is astonishing! Where do you suppose federal funding comes from?

Eliminating federal funding for education just means that instead of sending all of our money to Washington to be doled out by central planners the money would stay in the states where it was earned.

It's the fed's way of controlling things - do this or do that or we withhold funding for this or that.

You need to understand this before going around championing federal spending.

That some people can form such strong opinions without even a cursory understanding of the issues is disconcerting to say the least.
I'm not a paid blogger, though I appreciate the thought. Do you know someone at MSNBC that I could talk to about that?

@desperate
If you give $1 to the State education dept. instead of the DOE, then the DOE giving 50 cents to the State education dept., you might find a little better public educational system.

Oh, and please try not to be so angry...
If you consider yourself a real American who believes in the constitution, Ron Paul is the only candidate that you can consider.

If you understand that Government spending warps the economy into producing the things the government wants, and that you of your own free will can best decide where you want to put your own money, then you should understand that freedom means less government interference in your lives.

If you don't think that this is important consider that you are a citizen in a country that is bankrupt, and in serious economic decline- as a direct result of the government's policies.

America goes further into debt everyday.  America exports less to the rest of the world everyday.  Our trading partners subsidize their economies at the expense of the US, and not one politician in power does anything about it!

Ron Paul is the only candidate in either party that will give the US a chance at a decent future.
Abolish the Dept of Education . . . well consider this the Federal government provides for less than 10% of my state's education budget yet it DICTATES policy thru the mislabelled "No Child Left Behind". Utah actually told the Dept of Ed to keep its money and has opted out of NCLB for local control of public schools.  The Federal Dept of Education is about contolling the education agenda, not about improving services to children.  I'm an educator and I can tell you we would never miss it.  We'd do a better job locally than they can do from Washington DC.
You silly chickens... whatever the Federal government stops doing, whether its the funding of this or that, the responsibility will simply fall to the States to take up the slack.  The important difference is, the States will be more efficient managers of local issues than a singular federal bureaucracy.  If Ron Paul eliminates the IRS, how much frickin health insurance, tuition, and other goodies will you be able to afford?  ALOT MORE.
Hey "Desparate"? Between your flamings and your slanderous lies about tin foil hats and conspiracy nuts being Ron Pauls base, you're really winning me over, NOT! All of that asside NAME ONE Democratic hopoeful that is willing to pull out of Iraq 8:00AM day one? I'm waitng...
BTW who is Alex Jones?
Alex Jones has never seen $6 million dollars, much less raise it for a presidential candidate.

The entire 911 truth movement couldn't raise $6 million dollars in the 6 years since 2001.

It's everyday people who are sick and tired of the corruption that exists in our government, whether that be in perpetual war or perpetual taxation.

The government is not here to take care of us like many Democrats believe.

The government is not here to protect us like many Republicans believe.

The federal government does nothing efficiently or effectively.

Desperate, you're over your head.  The Constitutionof this Nation created a Federalist system, States can finance schools much better than the federal government, that was the way it was done until the less than a century ago.  Think, it's obvious if you have actually read the contitution and the words of the men who created the Constitution of the United States.  Read before you demonstrate your ignorance
Ron Paul is our only hope for America and people are waking up and realizing this. Our Forefathers warned us about tangled alliances and big government and look what we are doing. You want the next great president? Vote Ron Paul.
