Bush: CIA tapes story returns

Posted: Wednesday, December 19, 2007 9:03 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: ,

The New York Times reports that at least four White House lawyers -- Alberto Gonzales, Harriet Miers, David Addington, and John B. Bellinger -- took part in discussions with the CIA between 2003 and 2005 over whether to destroy the videotapes showing the interrogations of two Al Qaeda operatives. “The accounts indicate that the involvement of White House officials in the discussions before the destruction of the tapes in November 2005 was more extensive than Bush administration officials have acknowledged.”

“It was previously reported that some administration officials had advised against destroying the tapes, but the emerging picture of White House involvement is more complex. In interviews, several administration and intelligence officials provided conflicting accounts as to whether anyone at the White House expressed support for the idea that the tapes should be destroyed.”

Is there anything nefarious that the dirtbags in the Executive branch aren't involved with?  If it wasn't so scary these people would be comical.  I'm seeing a Keystone Kops remake staring the Whitehouse legal team.  Perhaps John Yoo could advise them on the specifics.
The tapes were destroyed to hide evidence, just like in watergate. What a waist of time with this court order. What are they gonna do. You can't charge a dictator and his administration with anything.
We the people must demand IMPEACHMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
impeach while there is still time.
There was a discussion before they told the CIA not to destroy the tapes? I'm shocked!!! That means that people in the white house don't all think with one mind. This is clearly a huge scandal.
We the People must demand security....they owuld do worse to us i am sure.
By exercising our right to impeachment we can save ourselves the money that would be used to pay the Presidents salary for life. This money could be better used to fund health care for children.
Try Bush & Cheney and their minions for TREASON...
As Bill Bennett use to pontificate during the Clinton years.... " Where's the outrage? "... Literally...you cannot believe a word that comes out of this administration's evil mouth.
Our previous President was impeached for sex under a desk.  This one has lied, obstructed justice, destroyed evidence, and killed 3500 of our countrymen and women not to mention thousands and thousands of Iraqies.  What is it going to take to wake up our leaders (??) in Washington to do something about it.
These guys will go down in history as the biggest joke in US presidentail history. I would laugh, if I wasn't crying...........
With the paranoid micro-management of the current Administration, there is nothing that doesn't come under their scrutiny. I believe it was Ben Franklin, or maybe Peter Benchley, who said, "A fish stinks from the head down." They appear to finally be Swift-boating, themselves. Just an Independent observation.
Sadly, another incident where administration officials
have lied, and broken the trust and faith of the
American people.
Can this president be so isolated that he can not see
the horrific damage he is causing to our country?
So many laws have been broken by white house personnel
that someone must be held accountable.
Bush claimed a few weeks ago that he just found out about the tapes. Yeh, right.  Are we to believe that these closest of friends, "Fredo" and Harriet et al, these people he's seen and worked with for years on a daily basis never mentioned a word to him about these tapes?  Plain and simple:  Bush is a liar.  What a disgraceful excuse for a president.  He should be impeached.
How can you impeach when it takes backbone and guts to stand out and make the case? The democrats won't even keep their vows to not cave in. Face it folks, we have an ABSOLUTELY WORTHLESS government (president, congress and judicial) that will not stand up for the American people unless it fills their pockets, or keeps them in power. The whole lot should be ousted.
And they impeached Bill Clinton for having sex in the office. This administration is a joke and an embarassment. To bad the Dems don't have the dangly bits to do anything about it.
Can Someone please say "Obstruction of Justice"? This bozo is killing this country
Oh wow, Van - if you get to read this... isn't it so funny how Jerry and Sierra and the rest of "Scroll" never manage to say anything about the Republicans in America? I'm glad someone other than myself is finally noticing these baltantly obvious things. Lies, lies, lies - the Bush admin. There's a good story line for 24 to use with there being no writers... just use Bush. Cheney or Rove would do well as well.
You know, 7 years ago when my wife and I were calling them "crooks and liars," we were called "unpatriotic!"
How patriotic are they with all the dirty, underhanded things they ALL have their hands in and all around! In the past it was to be EXPECTED of us to just "look the other way," but it's time to STARE them in the eyes and make a difference. Let them see what "Patriotic" actually stands for.
But for now, I'll just take some comfort that the  "so-called unpatriotic" ones were right all along.... If it's impeachment that everyone's looking for; STAND UP and let it be heard EVERYWHERE!
The tapes were evidence of war crimes. Ever wonder why Bush wouldn't join the war crimes court? This is why.

Impeach them for treason. Now. Bush AND Cheney. Cheney especially, why hasn't anyone dug deeper into his current ties with Halliburton? He's clearly got a conflict of interests. And when you're running the country, a conflict of interests, especially one that leads to WAR, is HIGH TREASON. I don't know what our laws are on treason, but I think we should waive them in favor of old-style English law: draw and quarter the scumbags.
WORST PRESIDENT EVER! ('nuff said!)
Impeachment is the only way to restore my confidence in my government. WE should demand accountability and if we don't, we deserve the dictator we have. Freedom comes with responsibility.
Dave, Tn..No, not one mind. Hard to get good results with a fractional mind.
When you attact Pres. Bush, you are attacting one of Gods children. Be careful,Someday we will ALL have to stand before God and give an account of every word and every deed.
Gaye
It really is no wonder that almost everyone in the world hates the US and 100% of them sit back and laugh at the ineptness of the psychopaths that have all their little fingers on the launch buttons.  Every single member of Congress should be grilled every single day and especially at re-election time about their inability to do what they were elected to do.  And that is to impeach these criminals and war mongers.  Shame on every single American, Republican and Democrat, that has avoided their duty to the rest of us and all the future generations in not demanding from their Representatives that something be done.  They can be stopped.  They can be punished.  They need to give all of us our day in court with them.  If "We the People" cannot and will not do what needs to be done, then the country that we all love and cherish and would die for, has already died a slow and horrendous death.  We only have ourselves to blame.
Sadly, we have lost America. What is left is a hollow shell being run by and for special interests.

The next administration will find it impossible to undo the damage. America is no more. Just the shadow remains.
Mommy, why is the lying man still in power?
Comical? NO! Conspiratorial? Yes! Treason - YES! Undermining the Constitution - Absolutely.

It's time to put principle ahead of the pragmatics of the current race for the presidency, and for Congress to get some backbone and do what it is charged to do: Impeach!  At this point, the crimes far surpass the bounds of partisan politics - for either political party.
As I heard and then read about the meetings in the White House attended by Gonzo Gonzales, Harriet Myers and others discussing to destroy or not destroy evidence (tapes) linking this failed administration with torture I could only feel sadness for our country and absolute disgust for these criminals.  They crucified Clinton and impeached him for his sexual encounters with Monica.  We cannot stand by and do nothing.  These gangsters have willingly violated our civil rights, have authorized torture, have waged war without cause, have bankrupt the country, are fear-mongers, are greedy, are immoral, have used the religious bully-pulpit to descriminate, have undermined our military's readiness posture, have abandoned diplomacy, etc, etc.  IMPEACHMENT is in order!  Why would anyone vote Republican?
You know I was a big fan of 24 but always thought that there was no way what they showed going on in the white house could ever happen... looks like I was wrong
Hide evidence of what.....These people will blow your a$$e$ up in a second if they had a chance. and you cry baby Liberals just want them to have their rights. Well they have no rights, they gave that up when they blew up the WTC the first time, then the USS Cole and finally 9-11. How easy we forget.......
G0 to their hometown in Syria or Tehran ECT....and see how many rights you have. Who actually gives a crap if they were mistreated, at least we are not cutting thier heads off.......OH!!! You forgot about those peoples rights...haven't you.....This country is full of Pu$$ies now, just unbelieveable....
I've read all the comments and I couldn't agree more with all of you. Impeach! Impeach!

Watch the DVD, No End In Sight.

What more would it take to get someone, anyone, to do something about this government?  Do we all have to march on Washington and demand this president and all his criminal cronies be ousted? This administration never even apologizes for any of the criminal acts they are all guilty of, nor do they even acknowledge, even with proof of wrongdoing, that they have done anything wrong. It's like living in the Twilight Zone. Can the Dems really do anything without the necessary number of Republican supporters, though? To my knowledge, Dems need more support from Repubs than they currently have to pass or enact anything. I think the Republican voters have to get on the Repub pols from their states and demand action on these issues or no one will get anywhere. This administration knows they have the whole country hamstrung. It's possible to change it, but not without a little more Republican support. Still the Republicans blocking progress. No wonder Chuck Hagel is leaving the political arena. He's one of the only Repubs to stand up against this corrupt administration. Hey, can we exchange Chuck Hagel and give the Republicans Joe Lieberman? Maybe then we'd make some headway.
WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ARE GETTING SICK AND TIRED OF BEING SICK AND TIRED OF THE SO CALLED LIARS RUNING OUR COUNTRY. WHAT HAS HAPPEND TO OUR SO CALLED MEN IN OUR COUNTRY WHO WILL STAND UP ON THEIR FEET AND SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH IS ENOUGH STAND MEN
Well, at least he will hurt the people that voted for him (Red States) much more than he will hurt the rest of us (Civilization).
Gay Abernethy, Mountain City, Tn,
And God will be glad we spoke out against the many injustices. By the way, Hitler was one of God's children too. What if he had been allowed to go unchecked?? Thank God for giving us sense to fight against injustice.
Sadly, we have lost America. What is left is a hollow shell being run by and for special interests.

The next administration will find it impossible to undo the damage. America is no more. Just the shadow remains.

Mike I agree with you 100%. Even though Bush has taken America beyond any next President's ability to save us, we still don't have the balls to impeach him. We did over a sex scandal but not over the destuction of America.
impeach and imprison bush and cheney, they are lawless
What a bitter man Randy Brown!
As I read this story my thoughts turn to what is the CIA?  It keeps secrets! No one and I mean no one out side of the CIA or the oversite Congressional committee or the Executive branch should know about the tapes and the people that leaked the information to the press should be tried for TREASON.  Thank God we have a President that will do what it takes to protect the United States of America
What is unbelievable Randy is that you choose to believe that after 9/11 there were serious plots against the US that justify the power grab of this administration. They scream fire and you run. It matters not to you if there really is a fire. Fear is the only weapon these scum have and as long as they are allowed to continue they will do their level best to continueto tell us the sky is falling. If 3000 dead at 9/11 is horrible please tell me what you think of 250,000 dead in auto accidents or almost 500,000 dead because of hospital "errors." I don't see us addressing these of dozens of other problems that cost us tens of thousands of dead each year. Instead we are led to believe that there is some horrible plot that justifies the loss of the very values that made our country worth something. Unbelievable? Damn right it is. Pussies? Yep, this administration has done it very best to keep us afraid of our own shadows.
"Do you have any knowledge of who was behind the attack???".  "You don't, OK you can go now.  Thank you for coming".  YEAHHHH, that will work wonders for information.  I'm all for water-boarding, eloctrocution, fingernail pulling, and whatever else it would take to garner info from someone who wants nothing more than to kill Americans just because they are American.  These tapes should have been destroyed, and they were to avoid the pinko-liberal outcry you see now.  Just be happy you can write your assanine opinions in forums such as this instead of being beheaded for dissention.
You know what's the saddest?  I am a 22 year old and just beginning to learn about politics and how it affects me.  I have good ole George W Bush as a first impression?  Come on.
Funny how liberal folks accuse right-thinking people of being followers, and all you hear from them is what they hear or read from the liberal media verbatum.
Randy Brown City Michigan, I have no idea why you think a government that acts like the old USSR is the right way to do business but that is exactly what you syaing is fine.  Maybe you think the gestapo of the nazi regime eas fine too?  This administration is not protecting us from the evil doers of the world they are protecting their own asses.  They know they have committed crimes and they are covering their tracks.  It is their duty to protect and defend the Constituition of this country and they have done nothing but trample all over it.  If you think it is ok to torture people think about it in this way---would you like your family members being subjected to torture if they were captured?---As a combat soldier I held on to believing that my country would not do that and hoped if captured I would be treated fairly.--Since we have done exactly what the evil doers of the world have done--that hope is gone for the soldiers fighting today and in the future---the world knows and will remember who we treated POW's.  Before you go off the deep end--think about how you would want to be treated if captured!!!
WAR CRIMINALS!

Bush is a liar and the administration are corrupters of the Constitution. Cheney ordered a stand down on 9/11. Nancy Pelosi says impeachment is off the table.

Contact your government representatives and complain!

IMPEACHMENT IS OUR RIGHT!

It is sad when the shredding of evidence of possible war crimes is considered a "liberal" capitulation to terror. Where is Ben Franklin, John Adams, Tom Jefferson? I guess those guys were tree Hugging libs. They stood up against an empire for what? Haliburton, The Carlye Group, AT&T? No it was for the Rule of law to be applied equally to all. They feared an overly powerful executive. Hence, the co equal branches were created to keep one from overwhelming the rest. If only the spirit of patriots would infect the cynicism of the partisans.
Is it possible that George Bush's devotion to secrecy and his unyielding devotion to his colleagues stems from the organizations to which he belongs?
The President, we all have heard, is a member of the Yale fraternity Skull and Bones, long a source of angst for the conspiracy folks out there.
Similarly, he is a member of the Freemasons, another secret society that values devotion to each other as well as complete secrecy.
I have never understood how the leader of the free world is allowed to serve two masters.  I don't really know, nor care, what each organization is about, but opinions seem to vary from  world dominantion to secret oligarchies to enslavement of the worlds peoples.
This aside, I have a problem with a man whose allegiances are not allowed to be probed into or questioned.  In my life I have found that groups of people that keep secrets usually either have very nefarious motives which they do not wish to be known, or they are about to throw a party for someone unknowing.
Call me crazy, but I don't think the President is planning a big surprise party for the world.
He's created both an internal and external fear amongst the people with terrorists, decided that torture is back on the table, eliminated every dissenting opinion that had the gall to speak out against him, allowed a rogue army to run through the streets of Iraq [read that Blackwater] that is unanswerable to anyone, as well as creating a gulag-like series of prisions out of the country where our laws do not apply.
Put these things all together, add the destruction of millions, not dozens, not hundreds, not thousands, of e-mails regarding what actually went on and was discussed in his administration, and to me it does not add up to a man that is putting his country and nation first.
Similarly, the gutting of the Constitution, giving himself the ability to determine who is a terrorist and deserves the right of Habeas Corpus again seems more like the beginnings of a despot, not a caring Christian man.
How many of the above actions WOULD Jesus do?
The notion that it is surprising that the idea to destroy the evidence would emanate from the White House is ludicrous.  Ity fits right in with his patterns of lying and deception.
Which brings me back to my original point, why id this man allowed to belong to societies that are not allowed to be asked about, whose goals are a secret, and whose histories have been questionable at best.
I am an independent, did not vote for the man, nor will I ever vote for a Republican nor a Democrat.  I believe that both parties are the same thing-the root of the problem.
I would encourage those running for public office to forego joining political parties and get by on your wits and ideas....... oh right, that's why we have a dry drunk, ex-coke head, supporter of torture, creator of record national debt in office, they can't.
as usual, bush minions will escape doing time even if convicted because the chimp will pardon them. i wonder if Americans understand now how crucial it was for the Reps to stack the Supreme Court.
It's so funny coming into any sort of forum or comment page, involved in anything to do with the US government or lack thereof! To think of all the pain and suffering the us foreign policies have instilled on innocent peolpe, including the 3500 troops that Bush personally signed the orders to march these men and women to their death. News Flash hypocrits, the majoriy of the US population voted Bush into office, once OK, I can see how that happens, but twice????? come on people you did this to yourselves. And now you're actually seeing first had what happens when you let emotion, religion, prejudice and selfishnees dictate where your country goes. you end up like all the other fundamentalist organizations, feeding off the hate of others. The bush administration will recieve it's page in history, right next to Nepolean, hitler, Stalin, Hussien and all the rest of the evil war mongering, rapist dictators.
