Clinton, ‘too serious’?

Posted: Wednesday, December 19, 2007 7:23 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones
ELKADER, Iowa -- Hillary Clinton spoke today about people’s perceptions of her and about the importance of a candidate’s relationship with the military.

"Some people think I am maybe too serious a person,” she told an audience packed into an opera house in this town near the Wisconsin border in northeastern Iowa. “Well, that’s not the way I am all the time. But I think this is a serious election, and I think we’ve got to get it right. We don’t have any margin for error, and I think the problems that we are going to inherit and the failures of the Bush administration are really serious.”

The Clinton campaign this week launched a series of video testimonials meant to humanize a candidate some voters worry is cold, politically calculating and remote. The senator is traveling the state with friends and constituents she has helped, who are sharing stories about her, as part of the final push to win over caucus-goers here.

Clinton talked about her foreign policy experience and then, in what sounded like a new argument for supporting her candidacy, she emphasized the importance of choosing a nominee who has a good relationship with the military, while making repeated references to how long she’s been around.

The comments came in response to a question from a man who wanted to know why he should trust the senator to make a possible future decision about declaring nuclear war.

"I believe that what you have to look for is a combination of the awareness of what (sic) to be done to avoid ever getting to that point and the ability to actually implement that,” she said, “and I think I bring that experience and a track record over the last 15 years of looking for ways to bring people together, to actually, you know, find common ground from Northern Ireland to the Middle East to Latin America to Africa where I have worked specifically to, you know, make it possible to have a safer, more peaceful, secure world. Also I think that I have an understanding of what it will take to maximize our ability to prevent war.

"I also think it’s important when you look at someone running for president to figure out whether they know how to work well with the military, so that you’re not either persuaded to do something you shouldn’t or you stand in the way of doing what you should, and I have not only served on the Senate Armed Services Committee, but have worked extensively on behalf of issues affecting the military and have a good working relationship with a lot of our commanders both current and retired.

“And I guess finally, you know, I have lived long enough to know that you can’t get excited about everything. You can’t get carried away by people calling you names or threatening you or trying to bully you; you just take a deep breath and try to keep working with people no matter what they say about you, or your country for that matter. So I think in terms of temperament and understanding of human nature, I’ve just been at this long enough to have a better sense of how to do this than I would have if I hadn’t lived the life that I’ve lived. Ultimately, that is a very personal decision, but I can assure you that, my priorities are for peace, for stability, for finding common ground whenever I possibly can and that’s what I intend to do as president.”

Check out the latest polls... Hillary is "surging".
A good relationship with the military? Hillary Clinton?

Oh man, there's another gaffe, as its just inviting servicemembers to contradict her (kind of like H.W. Bush felt compelled to contradict Bill Clinton).
The Clinton "surge" is on ! Bring it on !
The main problem we would inherit, Hillary, should you win the nomination is YOU!  You are too divisive.

Obama/Edwards or Edwards/Obama '08
It does not matter what clinton says or does or if she frowns or laughs or cries---those like Matthews,Rush,Hannity and morris would have some gasbag remark to make.------the nastier and more snarly the better the haters like it.these fat ugly guys are would not make one itty bitty pimple on hillarys buttox.I remember when druggie rush made cruel remarks about chelsea---showing a dogs picture to represent chelsea-----their hate and jealousy has no boundaries to pick on a child.Morris has hated Hillary and Bill since he gotphotographed sucking on his whores toes----
Too serious, too hard, and poeple that would NEVER vote for her really has nothing to do with her not receiving my vote.  America has been led into a very bad position by president Cheney and King Bush. I am concerned the war, the failing middle class, immigration, the deficit, our position in the world, the failing dollar, and the list goes on, requires a president with REAL experience.
Hillary, Barak, and John will all be very good candidates after we first elect someone who can stop the bleeding.
I, like so many other Americans laid off, choose to wait for health insurance and hope for the best.
Nothing personal Hillary.
oh Hillary, im sure it is not easy, trying to shed the image of a monstor, which was created over by the republicans and the media over the past 15 years. But ya know, keep up the good work.  There is no doubt in my mind, that when all the dust settles -you are going to be in the White House.  !!
Hillary 2008! !
No, just too disingenuous and scripted.
I think Senator Clinton's response to the question on the use of nuclear weapons is "right on".  While the use of military force is an option we must maintain in our dealings with threats to our nation, it should not be the first choice.  I trust her to make the appropriate decision for us in these and other matters when she is elected, because I believe she will have (and listen to)competent advisors; think through the problem and make a sound decision that is good for our country.  That is 180 degrees opposite from the adminestration we have today, which is why the U.S. is in the unprovoked war in Iraq;, and why our nation has fallen in prestige in the world community, and why our government has failed to adequately respond to the natural disasters and domestic problems which have befallen us these past few years.  We have had a lack of sound, responsible leadership.  Senator Clinton will provide that.  Elect her and give her a chance!

I would like to, you know, vote for, you know, a candidate who, you know, could talk without you knowing her way into the dustbin of history.
If there is a more annoying, arrogant, inept public speaker, I do not know who it is.
Please spare us from further 'you knows' and disjointed cackles.
Now I feel better.
No one cares about this old bag. As soon as people realize it's her, and not Bill, that is running for President, Hillary will be thrown on the scrap heap.

No ideas, no personality, no clue, and no chance.
Didn't she call General Petraus a liar?  If that is her definition of getting along with the military, then she should re-think her statement. Actually the military hates her.
No !
It's not the 'seriousness'....

It's the dishonesty and the corruption

Try being a little more ethical, Hillary
Why not let Norman Hsu do a testimonial ?

You're the Paris Hilton of the Democratic party

(at least she made a video tape)
For the life of me, I just cannot see where Hillary has any "experience" to be president of the USA. As for the military, if she was co-president with Bubba(who "loathed the military")and had the experience of decimating our military, will she do the same if elected?  Do we dare take that chance in the perilous times in which we live?
Reason number, who the hell knows at this point, why Sen. Clinton should not be elected. Her and her people feel the need tour to prove she is a caring human. If that is not apparent on first blush, then please stop. For the love of god, please stop.
how do you feel about the  2nd ammenment, that give people the right to bear arms?
What are you doing for the severice men that are returning from over seas ,especially the one that have lost parts of their body, are you going to furnish medical, hospitals, family support, disability funds ?
"Too serious?"  Maybe it's that you've been engaging in gutter politics this entire month, Senator Clinton.  At least you wised up and let your campaign do the heavy lifting after kicking off your fun attacks.  But a lot of people are out here watching, and we see right through you.
Great article and response.  Hillary Has had a vast amaount of experience working with military personnell as well as commanders.  Her position on the armed services comitte has also afforded her the opportunity to visit other countries and meet heads of state.  She understands the inner workings of our military and the delicate relationships within it.  Hillary has been a supporter of our service men and women and has pushed legislation provideing them with health care and deserved benefits.  Her support of Ft. Drum in upstate New York is also a testamony to her committment to the armed forces.  hillary would make a great commander in chief one we and the world could be proud of.
Senator Clinton has already shown me everything I need to know about her.
Help Reunite The Republican Party....Nominate Hillary Clinton "08".
Hillary is over her head in so many ways. She just isn't Bill from so many perspectives. While organized and focused, she doesn't inspire. She isn't a natural at this and that will surface before November. Too many chronicles of her abusive, crude, dishonest and calculating behavior have been published to fool most of us.

But also consider how much fun it's going to be making her life miserable for four years. No one likes her except the gay/liberals, govt. employees, trade unions, feminists, welfare recipients, and felons. Her negatives will rise dramatically when she finally has to make a statement of her beliefs. Yes, even higher than now when she makes every question a new yoga pose.

If she wins, she can't govern. She just isn't that quick and won't attract our best and brightest. She's everyone's first wife and if she had any class she would be Bill's first ex-wife instead of sacrificing all dignity and class to lay claim to the Clintonista machine when it was determined it was her turn.

If Hilary Clinton were President of the United States, she would make contracts with the Chinese to make U.S. Military uniforms, sell them our technology so they could make the weapons for us, and give up our security to her foreign buddies.  Look at her campaign donors, the Chinese connection is rampant with the Clintons.  When Bill was president there were serious questions about Chinese donations to his campaign.  Now it is almost impossible to find toys in the United States that are not made in China.  American can never be safe under Hilary Clinton.  The industrial base of the United States has been destoryed by Clinton's NAFTA policy.  Our past as the "Arsenal of Democracy" has been eroded away.  If this traitor is elected President, we will have little or no security.
I am certainly going to vote for Senator Clinton for President. She is a very capable, intelligent person with a lot of common sense to go along with it. She would represent our country very well with world leaders around the world. She would not be veiwed as a joke!  World leaders would soon know that she is not weak in any way.  I did not feel that confident  about some of the others running for President.  We need a President that has her head out of the clouds and feet solidly on the ground.  The pettiness about Mrs. Clinton will only help her cause, espically here in Nevada. Silly remarks made by the others who have atttacked her character and news person will not work  to defeat her. Yes, and when she fights back, she is called by other than her name. Oh, I have heard her called "that woman" by a prominent person in the news media!  Yet she is not suppose to run as a woman. Hillary haters need to get a life and stop allowing their extreme jealousy etc. etc. show so much. They seem to suffer from Hillarymania.  It would be so funny (I resisted laughing as I wrote this)if it were not sooooo  pathetic how Hillaryhaters worry about her walk, talk, mother, husband, habits, hair, smile and her laugh. She is not suppose have a laugh of her own! All of this garbage daily about Hillary Clinton has made me want to and I get more involved in the Nevada Causas in 2008. I can't wait to cast my vote for Senator Clinton and others I know feel the same also!  So, keep the good work in trying to bash Senator Clinton because from where I stand it is working in her favor and makes her good even better in more ways than one. See if you can figure that out. (Surprise, some men I have heard, like her looks too!)
Is it not time there were restrictions as to the dress code for men and women on TV. More and more men are omitting wearing jackets and ties. Women are showing longer and longer necklines.Aren't good looking dresses more stylish? Also,do all women want to feature the same hair style-long straight hair curled under the chin!!! Considering the average salaries received by most of those on news programs, etc,it would be more interesting to see some style and CLASS!!!!
Thank you for possibly starting a new trend.

As a registered Republician, I plan to vote for Hilliary Clinton for many, many reasons---her experience, her views on health care, women and childrens isssues, and her tireless efforts in trying to get this country back on track!  Our reputation around the world has never been worse and hopefully President Bill Clinton (and perhaps President H. W. Bush) would agree to work with both Clinton's to try to fix this unbeleivable mess!
Terrorists will be delighted if a Democrat, especially Hillary,  wins in 2008.  Terrorists will be free to terror bomb America again.  I just hope they start with Democrat cities--a mushroom cloud over SF and LA would cure the CO2 problems and overpopulation in Mexifornia
Hillary serious? Are you kidding me? That woman is an absolute riot! When this silly run for president of hers is over in a few weeks, she'll be the next funny one on The View.
The answer given, We have to get it ""right"" that is typical washington self serving paper hanging dialogue at its best!! The facts are on the table, cross voting, will not address priority issues, only demands to her being in control of any givien statement. her being liked by other senate members has a very low rating, self serving agenda, not forth comng to face reality.

The facts are from past preformance and present! Should you again have to choose, think about the scandalist past the clintons projected and their intent to destroy moral conduct inthe White House, millions of dollars and thousands of waisted hours to investagate their hidden immoral conduct, the fracture in the military ranks "which destroyed unity"! and the list far to great to be posted at this time.

This self serving Washington Paper Hanger can and does openly lie in the face of reality. Past record is full of conjecture and more lies, their desire to rule is not the same as to Serve! A Past President and a serving President """THERE IS TOTAL CONJECTURE""
The only thing serious about Hillary is her lies and her worship of a communist author, that she wrote her thesis about, and her applying for a job with a communist law firm in California who hired her to defend the Black Panthers of muder and terrosism, by the way she had no law license bdecause she flunked the bar exam.

And i guess she was serious about taking money from drug dealers through Bill's pardons through her brother. and i guess she 's serious about not releasing 2500 pages in Bill's libraby.  Wonder why?
What was the point of this article? Kissing HRC's butt?
I love it, that woman got it.
I wouldn't mind a serious person as the president. If Mrs. Clinton is serious which I think she is about the issues that matters, she is the right person for the job. We do not want some slogan making presidents like John Edwards or Rudy Gulliani.
I WANT a "serious" President. I'm not interested in who I'd rather have a beer with or how "nice" he/she comes across. I want somebody strong, smart and capable and Hillary has it all.

Hillary is too serious. Herself is a:
serious socialist,
seriously annoying,
seriously power mad,
seriously evil,
seriously unattractive,
seriously enabling of her pervert partner, and God I hope most of all,
Seriously Unelectable.
"some voters worry is cold, politically calculating and remote."

Where on God's green earth could they have gotten THAT impression? The same place where they got all that great information (Cold, calculating, aloof, pedantic, stiff, wonkish, self-aggrandizing) about Al Gore?

The blood is on your hands and you stand there asking, "Who did this?!"
Hello media narrative 101.

Perhaps you'll change your tune about Hillary in the near future, but for now, she's being, "GORE-IFIED", and that ain't glorified.

Van
As a registered Democrat who proudly voted twice for Bill Clinton, I cannot punch the ballot for Hillary Clinton. Saying you have experience when you have none is no way to run a campaign.
Yes, Hillary is the best choice out there. And people are starting to realize it.

I am amazed at the number of people who are critical of her because she doesn't smile right, because she's too remote, etc., etc. We aren't electing a fishing buddy or a prom date -- or are we? We shouldn't even have to *like* the person we elect; the critical question is, Can she win, and will she do a better job than the other choices?

And the answers are Yes, and Yes.

You people who want to vote for a big toothy grin or a handshake are some of the best arguments for keeping the electoral college.
Another trip with Hillary to fantasyland. In September she was calling General Patreus a liar on national TV. Now she says she has a good relationship with the military. Hillary is despised by the military. And deservedly so.
Oh yeah, the depiction of "Hillary the monster" was created entirely out of whole cloth by the VRWC and its sycophantic MSM. She's not at all "cold, politically calculating and remote". She's warm and cuddly and spontaneous and fun and only wishes to humbly serve a public who would absolutely adore her if they could only know the real her. Those rumors that she (and her husband, for that matter) have long despised the military are entirely false and without basis (why, Hillary once tried to join the Marines!). Only Hillary-the-Munificent can awaken us from the long national nightmare that the horrifyingly horrible, evil Bush/Cheney regime has visited on us (the massive unemployment and loss of decent-paying jobs, third-world poverty, worst economy since the Great Depression, the disappearing middle class, people dropping like flies because they can't get health care, women once more forced into back-alley abortions, everybody-hates-us-nobody-likes-us, war, war, war, oh the suffering, oh the humanity). Yeah, that's the ticket.

Don't worry your little selves, Hillary lovers. She'll get the nomination. You don't really think the Clinton's are about the let this one slip through their sticky, grasping little fingers, do you?? Collecting FBI files wasn't just a hobby after all.
