Tancredo drops out, backs Mitt

Posted: Thursday, December 20, 2007 3:13 PM by Mark Murray

Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo dropped out of the GOP presidential race today in Des Moines, IA. And he endorsed Mitt Romney.

"For the same reason that I launched the campaign, I must now end it," Tancredo said.

More to come on this story...

*** UPDATE *** Per NBC's Ben Weltman, Tancredo trumpeted his ability to stir the pot on immigration. “In fact, according to Newsweek, the Tancredo campaign has already won," he said at the news conference. "And just this month, The Economist, The New Yorker, the Wall Street Journal, and even the New York Times have grudgingly accredited our campaign with forcing the issue of immigration to the forefront of the debate and more importantly, with forcing every Republican presidential candidate to commit themselves to an immigration plan that calls for securing our borders, enforcing our immigration laws, and even the Democrats are tortured by the fact that a misstatement on the issue."

Kira-UT, I do believe Thompson will win. Have you noticed no one is attacking Thompson's record as a Senator? Why? Because it is impeccably conservative. Every pro-life group has endorsed Thompson, which at it's base are Christian conservatives. Rush Limbaugh's vast audience (20 million plus everyday)has heard him say that Thompson is the only true conservative in the field. And with Romney not being able to make up his mind about issues and being too similar to Slick Willy, Huckabee being a fraud, and Guiliani being socially liberal, Thompson is the clear choice for true conservatives. I think the polls have it wrong, as they so often do. Thompson isn't cute with sounds bytes like some, but he is a serious man with detailed ideas on how to tackle the problems we face. Obviusly this is all just my very humble opinion, but I wasn't backing any candidate until very recently, but the more I look at Thompson, the more I see my President and I think the majority of the people going to the polls will see the same. The polls do not refelct that, but that's doesn't make a bit of difference. Those things change like the direction of the wind.
The state chair in Iowa for Tancredo's campaign endorsed Thompson. Should say something. Tancredo endorsed Romney so Romney could get him out of debt. He lost all credibility on immigration with his endorsement of Romney. Apparently, his state chair is smarter than he is, or at least has more character.
Dale, thanks for explaining your point of view.  While I disagree, I find it interesting and respect your opinion.

While I am not a Thompson fan, if I had to choose a second choice in the GOP, it would probably be him at this point.... although I still find him to be lazy and lack-luster, despite what his wife says :)

Happy holidays.
