Romney defends MLK march remark

From NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann
Ft DODGE, IA -- Romney says that it depends on what the definition of "saw" is.

A defensive Romney was peppered with questions today on exactly what he meant when he said -- most recently on Meet the Press -- that he "saw" his father march with Martin Luther King Jr. Recent articles have indicated that his father, the late Michigan Gov. George Romney, didn't march with the civil-rights leader.

Admitting that he didn't see the march with his own eyes, he said, "I 'saw' him in the figurative sense."

"The reference of seeing my father lead in civil rights," he said, "and seeing my father march with Martin Luther King is in the sense of this figurative awareness of and recognition of his leadership."

"I've tried to be as accurate as I can be," he continued, smiling firmly. "If you look at the literature or look at the dictionary, the term 'saw' includes being aware of -- in the sense I've described."

The questioning did not relent. "I'm an English literature major," he insisted at one point. "When we say I saw the Patriots win the World Series, it doesn't necessarily mean you were there." (He meant the Super Bowl, of course.)

The back-and-forth continued to go south for Romney, who had intended for the story of the day to be about his slams on Mike Huckabee for easing penalties for meth users. Romney had to correct an earlier statement that he had himself "gotten tough on methamphetamine" (His proposed legislation as governor never made it through the Massachusetts House.)

"I'm making sure that that's correct as quickly as I possibly can," he said. "If there's any confusion there I'm sorry for any confusion."

Romney was increasingly exasperated with the questioning, especially when a reporter tied in these instances of word-parsing with the governor's past missteps on the trail -- such as his suggestion that he was endorsed by the NRA.

"Again, you can decide to hyper-analyze a word and try and create an impression that would not be accurate," he responded. "Frankly, I didn't realize that the NRA had an official endorsement program that was different than them phone-banking for me."

'I didn't apply for that, wasn't aware of it," he added.

Romney added with a weary smile that he knows that his words will be scrutinized, and that he's "up for it."

"If now and then I miss a word or I get something slightly wrong, I'll correct it, acknowledge what's wrong. But the overall thrust, the overall meaning of the story is very accurate."

Mitt reminds me of Eddie Haskall
He saw his father with MLK like he saw those 'varmits' he was hunting with his gun...
Hi Mitt, me again. There is difference between a verbal misstep and a lie. Your father was a good man, a good governor, and a good candidate for president. You are nothing like him. He was not an opportunist, a manipulator, a phoney. Honor his memory by not defiling it.
When Mitt and I were serving together in Nam, I will never forget the day he led our team in an attack on flanking pill boxes. He dragged five wounded all by himself for almost three miles, inspite of multiple wounds to his leg and stomach, that is, after he took out the pillboxes and "took care of" the prisoners--they were gooks so who cares. He deserved the Medal of Honor, but being a humble man, he would only receive a purple heart and a bronze star. I am so proud to see his sons serving the nation, like Mitt, at this time of war. He must be so proud to see them saluting the Flag of this great Christian nation! Jesus is our Savior! No New Taxes! Defend our Borders! Go Mitt!!!!!!
Go Romney! We still believe in you !!!
Mitt, "figurative awareness" when Dubya or Cheney do this, and they do it regularly, we call them LIES!
Slick Mitty...the second coming of Bill Clinton.

He's just wearing a RINO costume instead of a hippo costume.

(for the politically un-aware RINO is an acronym for Republican In Name Only)

Have a nice day, and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
Pete, get your facts straight before you comment please. It is documented that George Romney marched with King. Plus his father claimed to march with him, also Romney's brother recalls his father talking to him about marching with King. Romney doesn't make up stuff and outright lie like you would imply. He's too smart for that! I challenge anyone that would blindly question this man's integrity to go to one of his campaign events and genuinely test your discernment. I believe that you will find that he is truthful and full of integrity, contrary to what the other candidates would have you believe.
I "saw" my father walking on the moon. Of course, I mean that in a spritual, figurative sense!!! I agree with Pete from PA...you are a phony
If this is what politics has come to we are all in trouble. If this is the worst they can bring about the man, great.
Until Sept 11th, 2001 I was an Independent left leaning liberal. Since that date I am a staunch conservative convert do to security issues, and have been converted on fiscal issues. The social issues I do not have a stake in personally for I am not spiritual but I feel that spiritually and the ethics they bring to familes and the country can do nothing but good. I suffered through 8 years of George W (he's not a conservative, though he's a great man and history will be on his side 20 years from now). Romney brings passion to me politically. Put the petty stuff aside. Im not saying vote for him, im saying find a canidate to be passionate about rather than someone your passionatly against and the nation will be better of. Unless ofcourse it's Hillary Rotten Clinton, you have my permission to be passionatly against her.     Romney '08
Romney appears to be trying to put the emphasis on the "saw" part of his statement, as if the problem was that he didn't actually "see" the march with his own eyes.  That's not the issue.  The real point is that he made it sound like his father "marched with" MLK and that never happened.  There never was anything to see.
The questioning did not relent. "I'm an English literature major," he insisted at one point. "When we say I saw the Patriots win the World Series, it doesn't necessarily mean you were there." (He meant the Super Bowl, of course.)

Ok, does no one else find this HILARIOUS! Get ready for Romneyisms everyone.
I "saw" Romeny as a phony flip flopping fraud.

No wonder they call him Mitt Clinton.  This guy is one of the most disingenuous liars in American politics, and that's saying a lot.

Mitt believes in only one principle: I should be President of The United States.
me thinks this is yet another flip-flop

surely now his defenders doth protest to much.

George Romney DID march with MLK and in MANY other civil rights marches.

Why does it matter if Mitt "saw" him or not?

See "THE CAMPAIGN SPOT" for dozens of sources proving this happened.
Detroit Free Press: "With Gov. Romney a surprise arrival and marching in the front row, more than 500 Negroes and whites staged a peaceful antidiscrimination parade up Grosse Pointe's Kercheval Avenue Saturday. … 'the elimination of human inequalities and injustices is our urgent and critical domestic problem,' the governor said. … [Detroit NAACP President Edward M.] Turner told reporters, 'I think it is very significant that Governor Romney is here. We are very surprised.' Romney said, 'If they want me to lead the parade, I'll be glad to.'" ("Romney Joins Protest March Of 500 In Grosse Pointe," Detroit Free Press, 6/29/63)
Yawn, the media must be getting desperate to find stories with real substance. Romeny's father did support civil rights. Romney did receive a B+ rating and phone call support from the NRA. And regardless if a bill passed or not Romney tried to increase the penalties against meth. All three are true facts but the media has so little against Romney they have to play the word game with him. Mountains out of mole hills is what this is and the amazing thing is some people fall for these media stunts.
"Say-anything-to-get-elected" Willard...err...Mitt.

pathetic.

Just when we thought Mitt Romney was fresh out of things to flip-flop on or distort, here this comes about the MLK marches.

And Romney, on top of this "nuanced" explanation, WOULD NOT come right out and state in the Tim Russert interview that a long-standing Mormon church doctrine of prohibiting blacks from leadership roles in that church was wrong.

Flipflops...distortions...exaggerations...nuanced positions. Call it what you will, but they are stacking up one after the other and I think we need a person in the oval office whose word actually means something.

Mitt Romney's ever-changing positions and comments are a serious red flag and trustworthiness is one thing the next President HAS to have. Romney doesn't.
Someone tell this guy when you are lying we know it, Mormomism is differnt, don't be afarid of it, some of the kindest people I know are mormoms. Start with the truth or risk becoming a foot note.
Again, haven't we had enough of this double talk for the past 7 years?
Romney and Rudy G, Bush and Cheney - they're all the same.  Romney's turning into a better dancer than Fred Astair, but with a lot less class.
Is this such a big deal? I recall Bill Clinton talking about remembering church fires in Arkansas, during such and such years of his childhood... and there weren't any.
Hillary gets away with saying she was named after Sir Edmund Hillary... yet Edmund Hillary didn't climb Mount Everest until Hillary was five years old....
Again... what is the big deal???  Good for one, but not for another?
Ah, Mitt you never cease to underwhelm me.  Has there even been a more opportunist, truth stretching politician than yo?
This guy is so dishonest. Is this who we want to represent the republican party?
It's interesting to see that the actions of the Massachusetts legislature are being described as Romney's.  The fact that what he proposed didn't make it through means the legislature did not get tough on meth use, not that Romney didn't get tough on it.  As for the media getting so upset about how Romney used the word "saw," it's good to know that journalists, whom one would think would be aware the word has more than one definition, have an even smaller capacity to reason than previously suspected.
Pete,
You are dead wrong about Mitt Romney!
You will be judged in the same manner that you now judge.
His house is built on a rock. Thus it still stands strong and firm. Is he perfect? No. Only one man was! I personally am grateful to know that it is He that will judge us.
Go Romney!
I hope mitt means he "saw" his father march with MLK, like I "saw" him as president. This douchebag has got to be the biggest phony in a whole herd of them!
I think he just lost Iowa for sure, if he hadnt already. Nobody will believe his negative ads about Hukleberry now.

Democrats should start worrying. McCain is making a comebaock, and would be very very difficult to beat in the general.
On the internet, some have taken to calling Mitt Romney "Joe Isuzu" - the famous pathologically lying car salesman from the 80's commercials who will say anything to close a sale. Try looking at a picture of them side by side. It's pretty uncanny.
Lit. Degree Mitt is getting into Dubya territory with his goofy explanations of dysfunctioning baloney imaging. He'd should have just said he saw his dad marching with Sasquatch. That would have been hard to argue with.
What a con artist. Everyone wants to say now a days they walked with MLK but I'm glad they caught him in the act.
mitt is the man but these slip ups need to stop...
GO, MITT GO

You are the BEST OF THE BUNCH by far.

Carrie Damn...oops...typo...Dann.

Go work for the unwell Chris Matthews.  With the spittal slobbering out of his mouth when he gets in a "hate Hillary" rant, we suspect he will blow himself out any day now and you would fit right into his job.  You like to sling mud, darlin Carrie Damn.

When we see your name mostly we just skip the article.

We will never forget your silly mean girl article about a Clinton camapigner misspelling (TYPO) the name of an Iowa town and you tried to spin it into something negative against Hillary!!!

“It’s a figure of speech and very familiar and it’s very common and I saw my dad march with Martin Luther King. I did not see it with my own eyes BUT I SAW HIM IN THE SENSE OF BEING AWARE OF his participation in that great effort.”  -Mitt Romney, a see, saw.

Mitt Romney is TOAST.

Mitt ''sees''his dad. Paul collects loot from Nazis. Yet Paul is held up as the Great American Hero.
This isn't a surprise.  Flip-floppers are usually liars too.
Mitt, tell your handlers to stick a sock in your mouth and just stand there, nod your head, and smile.
Yo Mitt,

I knew George Romney. I was a reporter when he was governor of Michigan. He was a leader in civil rights. But you, sir, are no George Romney.

The more they talk, the more obvious the BS becomes.  Romney and Huckabee are both political opportunists.  Romney flip flops to win elections, Tax Hike Mike is a tax and spend liberal posing as a conservative, with more skeletons in his political closet than any of them.  Tancredo is gone, Thompson is on life support, Romney, Guiliani and Huckabee all have liberal fiscal and social political backgrounds.  Duncan Hunter has no following.  That leaves two:  McCain and Paul.  McCain has the support of the establishment, Paul has the support of the people.  Interesting.....
Romney lies, then lies some more. Check factcheck.org for his lies about Huckabee:

http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/romney_on_huckabee.html
People are just trying to find something wrong with Romney--they won't.  I'd rather have a guy that misuses a few words as opposed to a religious manipulator like Huck.
I think I just saw Romney put his foot in his mouth. In a figurative sense of course, but I really only read about what Romney said he saw. If I had seen Romney saying what he saw his father doing I may see his comments in an entirely different light.
I'd love to see a football team win the World Series.  I'd like to know what English program tolerates pronoun shifts on the order of "When we say I saw ... it doesn't mean you actually were there."  Ouch!

Now, if the Mittster was speaking metaphorically, he should have said, "I see my father ..."  If he was speaking metaphorically and said "I saw my father," he should explain why he no longer sees his father in this way.
What an absolute piece of work that guy is! Of course, that depends on what the definition of "is" is! Oh boy oh boy.
Mitt has a dream like Martin Luther King so let Mitt Romney ring and freedom ring around the world.
I to never met or actually saw the great man but I saw he dream, I lived his dream and I still march with Martin Luther King so let freedom ring.
The Democrats are always up here trying to embarass your Country and they come across like they are not genuine.  I am warming up to Mitt Romney like Martin Luther and JFK he has that something special about him. If Iran were to get the nuclear bomb all the horro of hell will be known, we need a stong leader that will keep the USA and Canada safe and for that matter the world because with the USA as the police man of the world it takes a special man and with help from above may God bless America.
This whole thing is ridiculous! I am a black democrat who doesn't even like Mitt Romney and I can't believe that this is what people are focusing on -- semantics. Really?  I think there are much larger issues at stake.     I think that while my parents didn't even meet MLK I can say that they "stood" with him in the battle for civil rights.  I could even say "I saw" them "stand" with him against oppression, meaning I know of their support of his work.  Let's focus on real things in this election.  oh wait, this is America we never focus on real things during elections.
This guy is high as a kite. Anyone who votes for him is pathological. "Yeah man. I saw him. I saw him driving the space ship next to Santa Claus. Figuratively of course." It's all in your mind man. It's all in your mind...
