Romney defends MLK march remark

Posted: Thursday, December 20, 2007 7:08 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann
Ft DODGE, IA -- Romney says that it depends on what the definition of "saw" is.

A defensive Romney was peppered with questions today on exactly what he meant when he said -- most recently on Meet the Press -- that he "saw" his father march with Martin Luther King Jr. Recent articles have indicated that his father, the late Michigan Gov. George Romney, didn't march with the civil-rights leader.

Admitting that he didn't see the march with his own eyes, he said, "I 'saw' him in the figurative sense."

"The reference of seeing my father lead in civil rights," he said, "and seeing my father march with Martin Luther King is in the sense of this figurative awareness of and recognition of his leadership."

"I've tried to be as accurate as I can be," he continued, smiling firmly. "If you look at the literature or look at the dictionary, the term 'saw' includes being aware of -- in the sense I've described."

The questioning did not relent. "I'm an English literature major," he insisted at one point. "When we say I saw the Patriots win the World Series, it doesn't necessarily mean you were there." (He meant the Super Bowl, of course.)

The back-and-forth continued to go south for Romney, who had intended for the story of the day to be about his slams on Mike Huckabee for easing penalties for meth users. Romney had to correct an earlier statement that he had himself "gotten tough on methamphetamine" (His proposed legislation as governor never made it through the Massachusetts House.)

"I'm making sure that that's correct as quickly as I possibly can," he said. "If there's any confusion there I'm sorry for any confusion."

Romney was increasingly exasperated with the questioning, especially when a reporter tied in these instances of word-parsing with the governor's past missteps on the trail -- such as his suggestion that he was endorsed by the NRA.

"Again, you can decide to hyper-analyze a word and try and create an impression that would not be accurate," he responded. "Frankly, I didn't realize that the NRA had an official endorsement program that was different than them phone-banking for me."

'I didn't apply for that, wasn't aware of it," he added.

Romney added with a weary smile that he knows that his words will be scrutinized, and that he's "up for it."

"If now and then I miss a word or I get something slightly wrong, I'll correct it, acknowledge what's wrong. But the overall thrust, the overall meaning of the story is very accurate."

I see Romney being the next president.  "See" in the figurative sense of course.
Mitt’s so flustered by being caught with his pants down he’s got the Pats winning the World Series. Boy that’s the calm, cool and collected response to a stressful situation that I expect from a President, not. Boy only two weeks ago the Romney faithful were talking about the “I am a Mormon” speech as the greatest speech since Kennedy, I somehow don’t think it is going to go down in the history books quite that way.

Is Mitt saying that it all depends on your defintion for "saw", kinda like Bill Clinton saying that it all depends on your definition for "is"?
Eddie Haskill is a good characterization, but without the endearing qualitites. Wait, Eddie Haskill didn't have any endearing qualitites. I would add one adjective to that description - Swarmy.
Besides pandering, flip-flopping, and the Young Republcan self righteous smirk, there is his vast intellect which somehow found a way to vote for and support Mr Bush for the past seven years. Not exactly a Nobel Prize winner, is our boy Mitt.
Wow, I find it so funny that the exact same, almost, scandals and missteps are repeated from the Clinton administration. Romney invoking the definition of saw... yikes. I love reading stories about the Mitt Flopper.
I can't wait for them to hound Hillary about her claim to have been named after mountain climber Edmund Hillary, even though he didn't climb Mount Everest until 6 yrs after she was born.
What is the definition of "is" again??  Dang it!  I was kinda starting to like him a lot.
Once again the press is trying to make a mountain out of  a mole hill.  This manipulation is as bad as the "Bush lied" mantra.  Mitt is a trust worthy man.  If the few were not trying so hard to believe something else it would be obvious to everyone.
Mitt saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus!
This is sickening bigotry and racism. It began with questioning why he did not resign from the Mormon church because of racist dogma. It has now led to putting down his father's leadership on race. It is a hatchet job of slice and dice by small minded youngsters who have no sense of that movement, at all.
The Republican party was formed to free slaves. Dixicrats have had to work overtime to make is out to be the racists.
Dear Republicans,

Eventually, IF we permit Mr. Mitt-fit to simply "revise" whenever he "misspeaks," our entire Republican party will never be trusted to mean anything.  ALL language will be a joke.  Everything we say or write will be MEANINGLESS.

We cannot go on treating all language as arbitrary and still be trusted to represent our voters.

Reject Mr. Mitt-fit!  His words have no meaning, and his word is not trustworthy.
Is this the best they have against Gov. Romney?  Who cares?  As far as most of us are concerned this is a non story. Let's talk about important issues, such as the economy and how Romney is the only candidate that has real solutions that will fix it.
Guess we move from the word "is" to the word "was"
I 'SAW' wood and then I 'SAW' it get up and walk away.
Now we are to vote for someone because of what their father did or didn't do?
Stick to your own record Mitt, we arn't voting for your family, you can love them as much as you want but it is not what we are looking at.
Out of all of Romney's horse manure, this one bothers me the least. Romney's father actually DID march for open housing in Grosse Point. That took courage. George Romney was an honorable man. Mitt wouldn't do the equivalent in a million years. He would take a poll, then go out an march against open housing -- and mock Mike Huckabee for not doing the same.
I have become increasingly sick of the media running this election.  In a race where so much is said, why do we keep focusing on a few words.  Just judge the candidates based off their records and keep the media out of this!
Where oh where is the handler or handlers to tell him that the first rule of holes is when you find yourself in one, stop digging!!!!

I "see" another dead Republican candidate. In the figurative sense, of course
Please people, Mitt was merely demonstrating the end product of being trained as a Mormon missionary. The dangling truthie doesn't always served him well in elections, but you've got to give it a shot.
yeah, yeah that's the ticket--I saw daddy marching with MLK.  Mitt will tell you anything to get nominated then elected.  Anyone with a half a brain can go back and check his statements and see a pattern of mispeaking and what appears to be outright lies.  He tells you one thing and then a few days later he is contradicting himself with something else.  We do not need more of the same lying crap coming out of the next administration.  We need to get rid of the division that the current administration has brought and get this country back on the tracks.  We need to get rid of the us versus them mentality.
Josh, even if Mitt Romney's father did march with MLK, that is not the point. The point is that Mitt Romney said he saw his father make that march, but is now saying that he didn't actually see it; he "saw" it. He says that's not lying because "saw" doesn't necessarily mean that he saw it with his eyes, but that he saw it as an imaginary vision in his brain, whether or not it really happened.

That's definitely the logic of someone I'd love to see running the most powerful country in the world. If he had been President instead of Bush, maybe he could have "seen" Saddam Hussein disappear from the face of the Earth and the whole Iraq war thing could have been avoided.
I saw the debate between you and Guiliani about illegal aliens working for you and your comeback about his non compliance with the laws in New York as Mayor.First let me say that just because you didn't go out and ask them while working on your house if they were citizens or illegal was one of the stupdist things I've ever heard. You knew that as an elected official it was your job to know who you hired. As far as Guiliani again as an elected official he had a responsibility to this country to up hold the laws and he didn't. I'm not voting for either one of you, this country needs change not the same old rhetoric that has been fed to us since the Reagan administration. The Clinton's have proven to me that they are just as guilty of back handed politics so I won't be voting for her either. Our country is in a mess thanks to the Bush administration so any like minde politicians I won't be voting for either. It's really time for the American people to stand up and say this is enough and clearly stand our ground on all the important issues at hand.I don't want to pay taxes for people to come into this country and take our jobs and recieve benifits that they are not intilted to.I do not want our young men and women to be fighting in a war that has no relavence.I don't want to see the rich continue to have loop hole's for their money.I don't want our government to be above the law and want them to be held accountable for their actions.I want a country that is going to stop big buisness from destroying the middle class. And last but not least I want my country to be strong in foriegn policy, to protect our borders and keep America safe.
Mr. Romney is a highly educated man.  For him to suggest that what he meant by "saw" was more in a figurative sense than what he actually saw with his own eyes is an insult to every american.  Who do these guys think they are, concocting stories and then parsing it differently when questions arise about the authenticity of those very stories.  He wants to  be the CEO of the great US of A because he has the personal fortune to spend as much as he needs to achieve his goal.  I do not see any endearing quality in this man to be our next president.  I just hope he withers away after the super tuesday.
Carrie Damn...oops...typo...Carrie Dann...thanks ever so much for your input.
Manny...what a great comment. Go Huckabee!
Neal, my poor lad, sorry to hate on you, but "W" will be known as the worst president ever in 20 years.  The environment, our ecomony, civil liberties, security, and status in the world will only improve upon the end of his criminal administration.  The biggest question in 20 years will be who was stupid enough to vote for him twice.  Lastly, who cares about Mitt, he will never be the PODUS, pure and simple, never!
You Repuglicans are idiots.  As big idiots as Hillary supporters.

What's wrong w/McCain?  If I was a Repuglican, I would vote for him.

Huckabee?  He breeds dog slayers. He paroles rapists/murderers.

Romney?  Ultimate flip-flopper, varmint-killin', liar.

Ron Paul?  Hypocrite.  Small gov't, yet wants gov't to control a woman's womb.

Thompson?  Denies global warming is happening.  Has the appeal of a slug.
Mitt Romney is an eloquent speaker and some times speakers in that class "wax eloquent" and say things that "didn't happen but is true". The statemant he made about his father (who did care about civil rights) may not have happened but is nonetheless true. Romney in future speeches has to remember to keep facts separate from symbols. If I were a Republican I would still vote for him.
He might or might not be false in that he saw his father walking with MLK. What is even more disturbing is that if his father did in fact march with King, Mitty wouldn't even defend his position like he wasn't even sure if he believed what he was saying. His phoniness trapped him in a corner and he felt compelled to spin some damage control rather than defend his stance - (Like "I said I saw him and that's what I'm sticking to.)

And this comes on top of Newsweek tearing apart his attacks on Huckabee. A whole lot of words out of context there.

This is just further proof that incessant liars begin to believe their own stories due to a distorted reality.

He is definately a person that I can TRUST to govern our Country.
Shocking! Another political candidate misrepresenting the truth, and he gets exasparated when he is called on it! In America! No Way. Hey I once "saw" a pink elephant, but really it was my friend who saw it, I just imagined my being there.
First of all, Romney's first name is Willard.  Willard is one of the most worthless wastes of human flesh ever to be put on this planet.  He is a liar, a phoney, an opportunist and an outright fraud.  Only ignorant brainwashed morons would support this fraud.  Willard is am embarassement to the human race.  Willard is the worst candidate for president ever and is a slimly lying hypocrit.
THE MAIN POINT ABOUT THIS ISSUE!!!
First of all, I don't care that Romney is Mormon, nor do I care about any other candidate's religion, BUT  I would like to know if it informs them on policy issues and if so how? I think that is legitimate. Also, there IS a separation of church and state inasmuch we don't want our President or Congress beholden to anyone except for the People (us).
So, with that said, Tim Russert asked Romney whether he thought that the Mormon Church's policy of denying African-Americans the right to practice their religion until the 1970s was wrong, Romney refused to denounce the Church's policy as to not offend his Church...that I have a BIG problem with. If you asked any of Christian candidates was it right for their Churches to justify slavery and second-class citizenship of African-Americans by placing them in the back of churches, I think that most would denounce that practice. If not, clearly their priorities are in the wrong place.
So, if Romney couldn't openly denounce overt racism and discrimination by his Church to not offend them, how can we expect that he answers to the people and not the Mormon church and its leaders, one of which is mentor and advisor. Furthermore, since Romney clearly did not want to offend the Mormon Church, apprently supporting pre-emptive war DOES NOT offend the Mormon Church...if that's the case, then what does it say about the Mormon Church and Romney for that matter regarding African-Americans that it would offend them if he denounced the Mormon lateness to civil rights?

Once again, his religion SHOULD NOT matter BUT when it clearly has implications on what he can and cannot say because of his allegiance to an institution other than the American people and our Constitution perhaps it deserves a look.
Out of curiosity i wonder how many of you out there know any mormons personally?  I live in Las Vegas and I'm here to tell you I know many mormons and to be quite honest with you hearing Mitt talk about an African-American march is like listening to Hitler talk about going to a bah-mitzvah I have never met a more bigoted group of people in my life ( I am white ) and come from Massachusetts I have had my share of bigots in the past but never like this I don't know how they rectify this with their religion??
Jerry's Man Mitt caught in a big fat lie!  Should we be surprised? NO!  Mitt is a freak!
I once saw Mitt Romney push an old woman in front of a train to get at a dollar bill lying on the platform.....well, by "saw" I mean I could imagine it happening...it was comptely hypothetical, but you knew that....right????
He saw his dad march, see. He didn't really need to see his dad to know what he saw. After all when it comes to Seesawing , Mitt is one of the best.

And it is funny ... I always thought that when you say you saw something like the Patriots win the SB it meant you saw it with your eyes. Not in your minds eye.

Mitt is a lying carpetbagger
Sorry to break this to you Carolina, but Mitt's dad didn't march with Dr. King...  The march that King led was on a Sunday, Romney did march... 6 days later...  Dr. King was not present at that time.

Nit-picking perhaps, but there were other ways Romney could have phrased this...
Mitt Romney needs to read the ten commandment, particularly the one that says"
"Thou shall not lie".

He needs to quit parsing words.
Ironic how so many people are criticizing Mitt's historical accuracy as though each and every one of them were at MLK's side during his entire life and they KNOW with certainty that his father never marched with him. I had drinks with members of the band Boston a couple years ago at a local bar...there are no pictures, no documentation, and no proof...but it still happened.
Mormons are a Cult!

Mormons belive that when Christ died on the cross that it was not enough. And that you had to have Blood Atonement, I belive this comes from the Pitt of Hell!

Brigham Young Blood Atonement Sermon:
Journal of Discourses
Vol. 4, p. 215-221

and suppose that he is overtaken in a gross fault, that he has committed a sin that he knows will deprive him of that exaltation which he desires, and that he cannot attain to it without the shedding of his blood, and also knows that by having his blood shed he will atone for that sin, and be saved and exalted with the Gods, is there a man or woman in this house but what would say, "shed my blood that I may be saved and exalted with the Gods?"
Mitt Romney Flip Flopper here is what his religion Teaches.

Mormons believe Blacks are Cursed people they are the decedent of Cain.

Bringham Young stated the following: "For instance, the descendants of Cain cannot cast off their skin of blackness, at once, and immediately, although every soul of them should repent, obey the Gospel, and do right from this day forward. . . . Cain and his posterity must wear the mark, which God put upon them; and his white friends may wash the race of Cain with fuller’s soap every day, they cannot wash away God’s mark; The Lamanites, through transgression, became a loathsome, ignorant and filthy people, and were cursed with a skin of darkness … yet, they have the promise, if they will believe, and work righteousness, that not many generations shall pass away before they shall become a white and delightsome people; but it will take some time to accomplish this at best. Source: The Latter-Day Saints Millennial Star, vol. 14, p. 418

1848, Brigham Young, as President of the Mormon Church, first preached the "Curse of Cain Doctrine". He said that Negroes, whom he considered to be children of Cain (son of Adam and killer of Abel) had the "mark of Cain" (black skin and kinky hair and flat nose) and they could not hold the priesthood until Abel was resurrected, had children, and all of Abel's children were given the opportunity to receive the priesthood first, then the Curse of Cain would be taken off his posterity (Negroes) and they would have the priesthood like everybody else. Brigham Young started the "priesthood-ban" in 1848, banning all Negroes, and even white men with Negro ancestry, from the two orders of priesthood, and banning all Negroes from the House of the Lord (the Mormon Temple). Mormon Church leaders
Now you are probaly asking yourself well back in those day's everyone was a racist, the blacks where not able to hold the priesthood until 1968 and many LDS faithful still believe in the curse of cain.
Lies make baby Jesus cry.
C'mon what he meant by "saw" was he had a vision of them marching together in the Terrestrial Kingdom.  MLK was protesting to get into the Celestial Kingdom because he died before blacks were allowed in which didn't happen until 1978.  See, the Romney's are huge civil rights supporters even in the afterlife!  Go Mitt!
I'm going to vote for Mitt. Not only is he the most qualified, his leadership is inherently hidden in his name. If you move a few letters around you get
"MITTEY ROM-N"  Mighty Roman!!! We need strong leadership and a business minded President!
GO MITT ROMNEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw my Great-Great Grandfather Kearney at the Hill Cumorrah marching with with the Angel Moroni... this was after his horses were stolen by 'you-know who'!
I have a lot of questions regarding the topic no one talks openly about. I marched with the unions in D.C. when they weren't allowed to work in the construction of a certain temple because of their color...
You people need to get a life and quit trying to see the negative in everything.  You are as bad as the news media!
What is it about flip-flops? I like flip flops, they are practical, cheap, easy to find, to replace when they wear out and just about every one has had at least one pair in their life.
Some of my flip-flops have served as a really good foundation and support for the person I am today.
Some examples would be I am never going to have children, followed by if I have children I will only have 2, I strongly believe in ZPG to being the proud mother of 4.  To the strongest case for flip-flops to date, I have never seriously looked at the Republicans as any thing but hypocrites who prefer to drag dirt and scandals out of closets than stand on their own merit all the while they screwing over everyone that crosses their paths to get what they want and then hold themselves up as being the higher moral standard.  However as time passes and I continue to learn and grow as a person, I am willing to admit that I just may pass on being a Democrat in 2008 and support Mitt.
Learn, Be smart, and admit that we have all for better or worse worn flip-flops.
Huckabee is a dishonest guy you're trying to portray as honest... Romney seems to be an honest guy you're trying to portay as something else, Todd!  Why don't you dig deep on Huckabee's past (Dog torturing/murdering son is just the start).
I saw my life flash before me!
It's ridiculous that the media has to bring up things like this. They have nothing against him, so they have to focus on stupid things to put him down. This is very sad. What's even worse, is that people are making comments against what he said. People that actually understand the English language, would realize that what he said is accurate. For those who don't, keep saying what you want, it will make you sound like an idiot.
