Huck talks religion, tolerance, morality

Posted: Friday, December 21, 2007 12:33 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy
ON THE ROAD, IA -- In a gaggle with reporters aboard his campaign bus, Huckabee elaborated on his response to a man from Marshalltown, IA, who had expressed concern that only Christians would be attended to by a Huckabee White House. "It's not like I'm stepping out of the pulpit last Sunday and running for president today," Huckabee said. "I don't think anybody's going to find that, you know, I'm some intolerant bigot when it comes to religion. If anything, it's the opposite -- because in my view of faith, it's only faith if it's voluntary ... and to try to force faith on somebody would, to me, violate the heart and soul of it as to what it should be."

Yet when he was pressed on whether he would continue certain practices he began in the Arkansas state house, such as a Christian Heritage Week or hanging the Ten Commandments in his office, Huckabee said, "[I] don't know why I wouldn't."

He pointed out that the Christian Heritage Week was celebrated in 37 states, but he was the only person who received attention for it, "which to me showed that there was some level of almost a different sort of treatment that I would get on the religious questions than anyone else."

As for the Ten Commandments in the Oval Office, "the Ten Commandments are in the Supreme Court," Huckabee said, adding that he "wouldn't hesitate" to hang them in the White House. "The Ten Commandments form the basis of most of our laws and therefore, you know if you look through them does anybody find anything there that would be all that objectionable? I don't think most people would if they actually read them," he said.

This conversation helped lead reporters into the difference between a moral argument and a political argument when it comes to Huckabee's social views. According to Huckabee, moral issues are not up for political definition, meaning that the practice of individual states legalizing certain immoral acts -- such as abortion -- is "the logic of the Civil War" and thus mustn't be allowed.

"The country had to finally come to the conclusion, no slavery is ... a moral issue; it's not a political one," Huckabee said. "That's why I define the whole issue of sanctity of life [and marriage] not in political terms but in moral terms. If it's a political issue than it's perfectly legitimate to have fifty different versions."

He elaborated on his logic using the tax code as an example, saying "there's not an absolute rightness or wrongness about the tax rate," thus it is a political issue, unlike abortion.

Moral issues can be federally legislated, Huckabee said, because "all law imposes morality on people. That's one of the fallacies when people say you can't impose your morality… All law defines right and wrong. Morality means the definition of right and wrong. What law does, it is codifying what you've determined right and wrong to be."

But Huckabee also hedged his bets. Contrasting his stance that law is the enforcement of a lawmakers morality, Huckabee also helped to justify the pro-choice argument saying that as a society "we can change what we think is right and what we think is wrong." Although he argued that abortion was a moral issue, and thus under his framework deserves to be decided at the national level, he added that "if a person concludes that it is a political question than you can justify having different laws in every state."

On a lighter note, the Huckabee family may have a tough time getting all together for Christmas this year.

"One question is whether Sarah is coming home for Christmas from Iowa," Huckabee said of his daughter and national field director. "We say she is ... she's saying that she's not, so we haven't settled that quite yet. I don't think she's told her mother that she's thinking about staying up here. I don't want to be the one to announce that."

Ooops. Janet Huckabee -- who was feeling a bit under the weather and didn't make this week's trip on the Huck-A-Bus -- got new floors in the kitchen for Christmas, her husband told reporters on the press bus somewhere between Dike and Waterloo yesterday. But she is expected to be feeling better in time to participate in the family's Christmas tradition.

"The only thing that I know that for sure we're going to do that we have always done is we'll go to our church Christmas Eve service," Huckabee said. "It's a huge community-wide celebration, and we do that every year. And then we have an unusual tradition that after the Christmas Eve service we go out and eat Chinese food. Don't ask me why."

Asked if the tradition is intended to help him better relate to the Jewish community -- who often celebrate Christmas with egg rolls and General Tso -- Huckabee said, "No, it's Chinese food."

He was unaware of the Jewish Christmas tradition.

Dennis Poe - that is either the finest example of sarcasm I've ever read, or *gasp* you really believe what you wrote.  If the latter is true, it would be easier for you to move to China, Cuba, or Iran to find your version of utopia.

PS- Jennifer Hunt: add me to your growing gang of groupies!  Excellent post!
Doug -
The only difference in a christian and non-believer is the peace that passes all understanding - the peace that comes from redemption. I am a christian and I am a sinner. I do wrong - I often do things that I am very ashamed of, things I would argue against. I am not bragging - I am letting you know that I am not superhuman, self-righteous or superior. I am blessed beyond measure to be able to live in this world and know that I may be in this world, but I am not of this world. I am His beloved. We all are. When Christ died it was for all of us - believers, and non-believers...even the Huck Hater who is filled with hatred towards all. Read Paul's writings in the Bible...even Paul struggled with the shame of being a sinner. The difference in a christian is the joy unspeakable that comes from accepting His grace. This doesn't make us any better - and Satan works overtime to bring us down and make hypocrites out of us. HuckHater - feel the love and stop hating christians simply because we think your lifestyle is wrong. I never said all the decisions I make are right. We should all respect that we each face our own demons and each can accept His grace.

Mike Huckabee is a moral, godly man who is for bringing about a positive change in America. Yes, he is a christian and so is our current president, however, he is an individual man who has a plan to push this country forward. Vote Huck so we can move in the right direction.

Jerry

Merry Christmas back to you.  I once recieved an apple peeler for Christmas, but I must confess your tie would top that as the worst gift ever.  Enjoy the respite from politics.
free to be me-
Huckabee is not pushing his religious beliefs on you or me or anyone else. He is not bringing his religion in to play. His faith, yes. His basic belief in God and that Jesus was His son are a part of his faith. He is letting you know what he believes and is doing so largely in response to media/public inquiry. Yes, he was a baptist preacher. Yes, the baptist church holds particular beliefs and he shared those beliefs with the people who chose to come into his church. He is not trying to impose those beliefs on you. I have not even heard him speak publicly in regards to his 'religion', doctrine or church establishment. Faith and religion are very different.

This country, by the way, was founded on an important right to religion. Yes, separation of church and state is important. That means no one can tell you where to worship, how to worship, who to worship etc... that does not mean that our leaders cannot worship how they choose and it does not mean that acknowledging God is not constitutional. Again, the church you refer to that is separate is an establishment, faith is most definately the basis for our legal system and is important.

Whoever said the ten commandments are not relevant is misinformed. Really, think big...
I love this "separation of Church and State" soundbite.  Where did that come from?  Cite your source before you tell me it's written in the Constitution.

The truth is that any legitimate government enacts laws, but any just law takes its force from a moral authority, and any moral authority is represented in practice by a religion (perhaps not one that calls itself a religion, but the function of religion is codifying and institutionalizing moral authority).  Religion and government - Church and State - are therefore inevitably intertwined.  Every President of the US has taken his moral views into office with him, and lent them the authority of his temporal power.  Equally, every morally-motivated lobby has pressed its case on Congress and the White House.  The language of the Constitution reflected the situation the pilgrims had fled in Europe, where individuals were persecuted by heads of State who were also titular heads of religious affiliations (hence the enshrined right to religious freedom, from which the office of President for example wasn't excepted).

---

I also love when people try to sell me homosexuality as an inherited trait.  Think about that a moment and see if it makes sense.

The truth there is that there is strong scientific evidence for a genetic predisposition in some individuals towards same-sex orientation, and equally strong scientific evidence for environmental factors giving rise likewise to same-sex orientation.  This is the interactionist consensus, that explicitly accepts that people can be born with a genetic predisposition and conditioned by their environment to go against it.  There is no very coherent argument that it is somehow 'better' to let human beings develop without environmental conditioning to obey their innate predilections; there is no very coherent argument that two people who love one another, for whatever reason, should be victimised for doing so.  Dragging questionable scientific 'proof' into the moral question of whether we should promote, tolerate, or demonize homosexuals in society doesn't help either side (my vote, incidentally, is for tolerance on that one - it's none of the state's business).
The seperation of church and state DID NOT make America a secular society. If that were so, religion would be viewed in gross, discriminating bias. The secular foundations/agendas/ belief systems are set up, in such a way, to see to it that people find God based religions to seem spooky, or for the "unenlightened"/ common uneducated folks...don't cha know. Our constitution still protects us from being a secular society.
Well..unless "relativist" lawyers and judges get their way.Oh and those lawmaker people.
Then the very definitions of words could be percieved according to a "select few" opinions.

Gee..I wonder where those opinions would come from....
OK, Huck as admitted that he sees no problem with imposing his religious beliefs on others if he feels strongly about an issue.  THAT is why we have separation of church and state.
If Huck wins the nomination, the name of the party should be changed to the Theocratic party, to more accurately describe it's adherents. As a true Republican, I want nothing to do with the man running for National Pastor! Get a grip, you religious fanatics.  This country was founded as a FREE country, not a CHRISTIAN nation!
Its a fact...Mormons are not christians they are mormons.
What is the problem. Its not an opinion it is a fact.
If you listen to the Huckster, really listen, he'll scare you almost as much as Hillary should.  Both are dangerous!  And Jeb in Florida, since you believe that being homosexual is a choice, my question then is, when did you choose to be heterosexual? (Assuming you are.) I mean, when you you say to yourself- I can be hetersexual, bi-sexual, or homosexual?  What was your thought process?  How did you decide to be heterosexual?  Duh, you didn't!  You are what you are.  Just as any other person is what they are.  Why is it that some have to hate those who may be different?
Robert Jorgenson, Salt Lake City, Utah-

still can't find anyone to love you. What a sad man you seem to be.

So you are a Mormon hater, that is clear as day.
You really would be a much happier person if you high tailed it out of Utah. How can you stand living among such evil horrid people?

Anyhow, I don't know much about these claims, but I have made a life study of Mormonism and your posts on that subject are so distorted and misleading that I can't take your blogs serious anymore.

Listening to you about Mormonism is to me like taking advise from my shoe salesman, who always wanted to be an oncologist but never went to college, about the best treatment options my cancer. No thanks.

Kathryn, while I don't agree with you on Huckabee, I found your post on this thread to be beautiful and pretty much exactly how I feel.  I am also a Christian and a sinner, and appreciate your comment.  Merry Christmas to you.

Jerry, nice tie :)  My paternal grandmother once gave my mom a sweater with the name "Julianne" on it.  My mother's name is not Julianne.  lovely :)
Although a believer in a supreme entity (god if you choose) and that evolution is the tool the supreme entity employs to keep life forms and the habitat in balence, I also believe religion is the evil of this earth in so far as it is divisive in nature and is the primary cause of most wars, hatred and persecution. For the sake of freedom, never should we allow a religeous based government as is common place in parts of the world. A seperation of church and state is essential for maintaining our freedom.       Having said that, I would like to say the Christmas season is upon us, and whether or not one is religeous the Christmas season more aptly symbolizes a time for giving, tolerence and unity. Tis' the time of year to lay down the sabres, the time for family and friends to be together, a time for reflection of days gone by and a time to let by-gones be by-gones.  There will be plenty of time over the coming year to fued and fight, plenty of time to make enemies and voice our opinions. But Christmas tis' the season for family, friends and neighbors to rejoice and embrace each other...MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL A GOOD NEW YEAR!!!!
He's saying all the right things, but it remains to be seen if the media will continue to treat him gently when he gets the nomination. Huck would've been toast long ago if the MSM showed any real interest in what his agenda is and comments from the past. Sounds like he's got some Sauid-style relgious policies lined up...

"just because I don't believe that homosexuality is born into people, does not make me a bigot, hater, intolerant, etc. ...  There is nothing to prove your point of view, while I have the whole biological world that we live in as proof."

You mean, all that came before the Human Genome project, right?  You know, the study of the genetic code of Human beings?  No, Jeb, ALL of science does not agree with you - in fact, those that do are a very small minority, now ...

but hey, thanks for playing ...

"Evangelicals are not Christians, They are Evangicals!"

This is actually a true statement - more so than Ms. Hunt's assertion ... evangelicals are Faux Christians, at best; straying the furthest from any philosophy preached by Jesus of Nazareth than any sect calling itself "Christian" ... I could list the ways and give lots of examples, but there's not enough space on this website for that ...

Loving the religious jihad going on in the republican party these days...I've always wondered why so many of you were running around pretending you were tolerant of other christians when eveyone thinks their brand of fairy tales is the right one...here's my take, religion is a false flag started many moons ago so one small group could control larger groups...
"Everyone seems to believe that they have the right to contraception, or sex before marriage, or sodomy with their wife, or abortion."

They do, actually ... it is the basis for the Roe v. Wade ruling by the Supreme Court: that you or the government have no business dictating to others what is moral and what is not, and that just because a right is not listed in the Bill of Rights does not mean the right does not exist ...
People---
Since when are Mormons not Christians?? I was brought up in the RLDS church (now Community of Christ--a branch off of LDS/Mormon), and we considered ourselves Christians. They do have some unique views compared to other Christian denominations, but they still essentially believe in God, Jesus as Savior, and the Bible-- what more do they need to be in the "club"? And no they don't believe that Jesus and Lucifer were brothers--I would think that would be kind of impossible given their beliefs regarding the Trinity. There are many factions of the Christian faith with lots of variations in beliefs, but they are still the same at a basic level. There is quite a bit of variance just within the various sects considered part of the Mormon denomination. Mormonism may not fit nicely into the box of Christianity, but it's ignorant to think it's some cult or something, or completely made up. It's all a matter of interpretation--using the same Bible (with some difference in translation) you can get Mormons, snake-handlers and other charismatics, Baptists,  "Southern" Baptist, Catholic, Amish, etc etc.
I wish people (including Huckabee) would do their research before making comments and assumptions about the belief systems of other groups instead of basing it on what they've heard somewhere. What is sad is that this mentality is partially propagated by other churches--I had many Baptist friends in particular that were taught in church that LDS/RLDS/Restoration members were all cultists. So much for tolerance and Christian love.
Boy as we get towards the holidays people of faith get angrier. Love to all you angry christians who are all better than me and mine. I have decided that my new saviors are Jen Hunt and that
screamer David Pharr-out,
they have shown me how great it is to believe in something so much that you can denigrate anyone you want, what power, what greatness.
Merry Christmas to you Jerry, we my not agree on anything but you at least make your points unlike scroll and the great baptised ones.
I would like to see that pumpkin pie tie, it would make a friend of mine swoon with joy, he collects them. Cheers!
One last question, do they still give out trading stamps anywhere?
John Alexander, Edinboro, PA

One last question, do they still give out trading stamps anywhere?
------------------------------------------------

Oh my, that question brings back memories. I got my first sewing machine by trading in S & H Green Stamps. Seems a long time ago.  Thanks for reviving a pleasant memory.

Merry Christmas Dot, you made my day, I used to be the one who put the stamps in the book for my mom, you also gave me a good memory, Thanks.
John Alexander, you make me smile :)
Does the Huckster wish to imply that all the other guys and/or us are not christian or that he is a better Christian. All these ten comandment folks are just hypocrits. For what does the fourth say? Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it Holy. What is the Sabbath Day, Saturday of course. Something so simple yet violated by 99.99 % of Ten Commandment worshippers. The heart and mind of man is deceitful above all things.
David Anders,

I am a very tolerant person, but your posting has offended me.  Please tell us the posting was intended as a parody of Huckabee or some other religious bigot!
After reading the descriptions of Christians in the majority of these posts,it doesnt surprise me that people would be so afraid to have a Christian as President. I am a Christian, my father has been a pastor for over 60 years. I dont know how anyone that really studies the teachings of Christ and tries to live acording to those teachings could be the ones described here. The greatest comandment according to Jesus himself was to love your neighbor as you do yourself. There is no qualifier, gay, straight, white, black, Jew, Gentile etc... Any one that preaches hate can not be by definition a Christian. So, the fear of a true Christian is unfounded. There are many bad people in this world, they can claim any title. To think that Christians are all hate filled bigots is unfair. It would be like saying that all athiests are Stalinists. True Christians are good people, our example is Christ, he spent his life helping hurting people, this is the duty of every Christian. Alot of the choices we make on earth have a direct affect on our quality of life. If you choose not to commit adultry, guess what your marriage will probably be better, if you choose not to have sex before marriage, you dontget vd or pregnant. If you dont steal, you dont go to jail. If you dont lie you dont have to remember the lie etc. It just makes life more enjoyable. People that claim to be Christians but speak hate are not living up to the example of Christ. So I ask that when describing people in your posts remember this, the teachings of Christ have nothing to do with what I have read above. Please, True Christian people always make the best neighbors!!!
Waffler, you make an interesting point.  Here is why I worship on Sunday-  I believe that Saturday was the Sabbath of the Old Testament.  Christ, as a Jew, followed the Sabbath on Saturday (the 7th day).  My understanding is that followers of Christ switched the Sabbath to Sunday after Christ's resurrection, because Sunday is the day the Bible teaches he rose from the dead (crucified on Friday afternoon (Good/God Friday)- Jewish calendar marks days from sun-down, so three days would be Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and he rose on the third day).  So AD christians practice the Sabbath on the Lord's Day, as the Bible calls it, or Sunday, which is in honor of Christ's resurrection.  This also explains why Jews still worship on Saturday, as do other strict followers of the Old Testament, like the 7th Day Adventists.

Hope that made sense.  Thank you for your logical point. It made me think :)
Oy Vay!
Please please tell me that Dennis's post was a joke.
Answer: Religion, Tolerance, Morality.

Question: Name three things Hillary Clinton lacks?
Caucus Cooler: Huck Makes $35,000 from Consulting Embryonic Stem Cell Research Company
I don’t really care about Huckabee’s liberal positions. Well, not nearly as much as this kind of stuff.

Most noteworthy, $35,000 came from Novo Nordisk, one of the world’s largest embryonic stem cell researchers. It seems that when money is at stake Huckabee may be able to look past his supposedly fervent opposition to this procedure

He also received speaking fees and honoraria from churches while Governor.

It is certainly calls into question whether or not it is appropriate for a Governor to be taking a consulting fee from interest groups, as Huckabee did, when issues surrounding that interest group could come across his desk.

The consulting money was funneled through an organization called 12 stops, a group created in 2004 to handle Gov. Huckabee’s book deals. With all the attention Senator Obama received for running a separate PAC and potentially funnelling money from maxed out donors through that PAC, it calls into question whether Huckabee may have done the same
I wake up every day and work my hardest to do my job to the best of my ability.  I love everyone and treat each and every person that I come across with love and respect.  I try to make the world a better place with my every action.

I am not a Christian.  The manor in which one lives their life determines their eventual fate (afterlife - if there is one), not the label someone assigns to themself.
I have no idea why anyone would homosexuals would be "uptight" around christians.I like rainbow stickers!:))

I can just imagine certain individuals coming up to me to "bond" and I'd start telling them about why GOD made the rainbow!I can feel the love already.
AND..just for the record...I believe people are born with a homosexuality weakness at times. But it is a weakness like phobias or anxiety issues.

That is NOT an excuse to "roll around" in sodomy like it is somehow "normal" however.

Hey RC afraid to print your name or are you too busy collecting food stamps. Truth hurts doesnt it.  we 're sick of you liberal America haters sponging off us.
I EMAILED HUCK TO SAY A PRAYER FOR ALL YOU LIBERALS AND ATHESISTS.  HOPE YOU LIKE YOUR NEW PRESIDENT, THIS RACE IS OVER, YOU HAVE THE DEVIL ON YOUR SIDE AND HUCK HAS GOD  GO FIGURE
Thank you for the post from Really not bad people.
Thank you Kira, you taught me something. I enjoy learning new things everyday, it makes me feel alive.
Peace to you all.
my wife and I get to see each other only on weekends because of work, we have 10 days on the farm together this year and it will be wonderful.
Merry Christmas.
Mormons are NOT christians. They do not believe what christians believe..at all. They are mormons.

 Actually..All the truth be told..
mormons are known to be false prophets.A cult like scientology...or the chrishna people.

People make their choices in America. But that doesn't mean their choices are good ones.

Let freedom RING in America!!!The Lord Jesus does NOT force Himself on people, he just sends His followers out and about, telling the GOOD news:))!!.People must choose to believe in God of their own free will, like I posted at the very beginning of this thread.
" Let freedom RING in America!!!The Lord Jesus does NOT force Himself on people, he just sends His followers out and about, telling the GOOD news:))!!.People must choose to believe in God of their own free will..."

But isn't that just what the Mormons are doing? Also, after looking at your other posts it looks like the only thing you spread is negativity.  Hardly the GOOD news that you profess to believe in.
David Anders, thanks for demonstrating to us who are the real haters.
