Foreign policy adviser battle

WASHINGTON, Iowa -- In a battle for who can claim a bigger slice of the Clinton foreign policy legacy, Barack Obama said at a town hall Friday afternoon that he had more members of the Clinton Administration supporting him than Senator Hillary Clinton at a town hall in Washington, Iowa.

It was a charge that the Clinton campaign quickly disputed.

"In fact you could argue that there are a bunch of ex-Clintonites supporting me," Obama said. "There are more foreign policy experts from the Clinton Administration supporting me than Senator Clinton. That should raise some pretty interesting questions."

Obama said that the reason so many former Clinton foreign policy advisors were supporting him was because he exercised better judgment on foreign policy. Citing his positions on talking with one's enemies, his opposition to the Iraq War and the Kyl-Lieberman ammendment and his criticism of Gen. Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan as an unwilling ally on the war on terror, he argued that his thinking was out of step with a conventional Washington approach but his positions had been proven right over time.

"Why is the national security advisor, the secretary of the navy for Bill Clinton, the assistant secretary of state for Bill Clinton, why are all these people endorsing me? It's not just because I give a good speech. They apparently believe that my vision of foreign policy is better suited for the 21st century, and is not caught up in the politics of fear that we've been seeing out of George Bush for the last seven years," Obama said.

According to a press release by Obama's campaign, there are 47 former members of the Clinton administration who are advising the Obama campaign at a senior level, including Clinton's former national security advisor, secretary of the navy and an assistant secretary of state.  The rest, campaign staffers say, include a cohort of 200 advisors who served in the Clinton administration in lower level positions and are now part of think tanks or academia and who focus on foreign policy on a day to day basis in their careers.

Senator Hillary Clinton's campaign responded quickly to what they say is a "false charge," releasing a list of 83 foreign policy advisors who had served with the Clinton's. However, as some NBC correspondents and political editors have pointed out the Clinton list appears to be padded with the names of those who either served as assistants, with lobbyists, fundraisers or those who had little connection to foreign policy.

For example, Lissa Muscatine is a speechwriter for Clinton, whose foreign policy experience is limited to covering the French Open and Wimbledon when she was a tennis writer for the Washington Post's sports section.

Others, such as Walter Mondale who was ambassador to Japan during the Clinton years, certainly played a role in American politics but may not necessarily be considered a "foreign policy" expert.  By players in American politics, it means they may not have had an extensive day to day role in American foreign policy, and may not be credited with having in-depth knowledge of a certain field or subject matter.

Some of the names include politicos, including Joseph Paolino, a  Clinton bundler and the former mayor of Providence, RI., according to OpenSecrets.org.  Another was Steve Richetti who was deputy chief of staff in the Clinton White House.

Many of the experts listed served as ambassadors during the Clinton administration and are either working as lobbyists now and/or are fundraisers for the campaign such as Edward Gabriel, a former ambassador to Morocco.

Five of the experts listed are currently Clinton bundlers who served as ambassadors during the Clinton administration, according to OpenSecrets.org.  They include: Elizabeth Bagley who was the ambassador to Portugal; Robin Chandler Duke an ambassador to Norway; Arthur L. Schechter an ambassador to the Bahamas; Timothy L. Chorba who was an ambassador to Singapore; Charles T. Mannatt who was the ambassador to the Dominican Republic; and Thomas L. Siebert who was an ambassador to Sweden

Though some on the list are currently lobbyists, they did serve as foreign policy staffers during the Clinton Administration.  They include:  William Danvers who served as a staffer for four years on the national security council; Stuart E. Eizenstat who spent three years as the ambassador to the European Union; Rudy Deleon who was a deputy secretary of defense.

In the argument over advisors, both campaigns are attempting to claim the legacy of the only Democratic administration in the last twenty-seven years.  Obama in particular has paraded his advisers holding foreign policy forums with former Clinton administration officials such as Tony Lake (former secretary of the navy) and Susan Rice (former assistant secretary of state for African affairs) to offset the claim tht he does not have enough foreign policy experience.

The forums are often saccharine affairs, with experts praising Obama's vision for foreign poliicy and through the power of their own resumes try to assert that if they are backing him, then he does have the experience and foresight to chart a better course in foreign policy than the other candidates in the race.

Returning to the argument that he doesn't have enough experience to be president, Obama also said at the town hall that he would enter the White House with more foreign policy experience than either Bill Clinton or Ronald Reagan.

"Well, first of all I sit on the Senate foreign relations committee even by the standards of Washington I have dealt more with foreign policy than let's say Bill Clinton had when he became president or Ronald Reagan who was a governor at the time," he said.

The Clinton claim of 83 foreign policy experts is yet another example of that campaign's tendency towards "over-reaching".  Several weeks ago the Clinton campaign touted a list of 80 SC religious leaders as supporters.  In a matter of two days, the NYT's showed that list to have been padded.   Including a speech writer whose "whose foreign policy experience is limited to covering the French Open and Wimbledon" as a sports reporter, certainly corroborates the term "over-reaching".
Hillary's campaign, making statements based on flimsey and shady facts?  No, never..
Next thing you know, we'll hear that her campaign was forwarding an e-mail about Barack as a Manchurian Candidate + Islamic extremism..
or that he'll be questioned on whether he was a drug dealer or not..
or that his leadership PAC is a "slush fund"..
or that he "attended a secular madrassa"...
or that his health care plan will leave 15 million without health insurance because he's cold blooded and not because his healthcare policy is geared towards universal access rather than forcing universal coverage on every American.

Hillary is hillarious.
Come'on, these are Democrats arguing about Foreign Policy. The biggest problem they have is figuring out what to serve at their fancy summit meetings.
New poll out!

Hillary padding her numbers? How shocking.  Once again, Hillary resorts to cheating to get an upper-hand.
Sarkozy for President....
If, the foreign service veterans, and beaurocrats thought HRC was the right person for the job of the next President, especially those that served under Bill Clinton, than Obama should only be able to get a small handful, IF ANY.  She should be getting all of them.
HMMMMM!!!!
Why hasn't Obama ever used the line that "experience is not always the best teacher" You can hardly say that all of the experience of congress has produced such notable results.
Pa Paw!!! that was a great upper-cut ... I bet Obama is going to close the deal with Al Gore's endorsement then we will see how HRC is going to respond to that.

BARACK OBAMA 08!!!
As usual, you miss the point - if HRC, with her 35 years of experience needs 80+ foreign policy advisors, she doesn't know any more about foreign policy than Obama or any other new president. The fact is that all presidents rely heavily on EXPERTS in the field. It's what you do with that information that counts. George Bush has a brain trust of foreign policy experts as well, and he obviously didn't listen to the once who told him not to invade Iraq. Heck HRC didn't even read the NIE
Barack Obama for President of The United States of America.
Who cares who has who's foreign policy staff. What is important is what the candidates' foreign policy positions are.  During a campaign, these positions need to be presented by the news media so the voters can use them to make an informed judgment on how to vote.  The news media needs to research the credibility of the positions and report their findings.  No fluff, no sound-bites, nobody gets away with demagoguery, good ideas are floated in the public arena and might even be incorporated in rival campaigns (well this might be a stretch - debated would be an improvement over what is in the news now, however) and we all win.
The Clinton campiagn is a sinking ship. What a shame? What a big disgrace for this bogus names? I rest my case

Walter Mondale was the 42nd Vice President of the US, and a US ambassador to Japan from 1993 to 1996. He can certainly be considered a "foreign policy" expert.
"You can bend it and twist it... You can misuse and abuse it... But even God cannot change the Truth.” Michael Levy

Obama 08!
Obama states he will have more experience than when Bill Clinton started. What we have as an asset is that Bill Clinton has  full experience now and is well like by alot of foreign countries and with Hilary as president we will gain the access of having 2 presidents in office with full knowledge of foreign and domestic policies.
So how many actual foreign policy advisors does Hillary have.  If we look at an organizational chart where do Obama's advisors and Hillary's advisors sit?

It is impossible to evaluate the bottom line.  What is clear is that Clinton comes off as naive by including names that don't belong on the list.  Plus, if there are lobbyists on this list, it is an obvious turn off.

I don't trust Clinton - this is just one more straw, but the camels back broke long ago...
Obama spoils the facts w/his big ego at the end claiming his wealth of foreign policy experience Trumps real experience that only comes from longevity.  I am so sick of Obama crying victim only to slam his opponents time and time again for the very crime he is committing.  Obama needs a new deck of cards for me to even begin to consider what goods he brings to Hillary's endless gourmet platter.  You have education and enthusiasm, Obama.  I've read about you, listened to you.  You don't have enough.
Set, match Obama.
I think the press likes Obama so much they are willing to let go the fact that Obama has to go to former Clinton advisors to somehow find foreign policy credentials. He talks about how he is going to do new things and be different than Clinton but the people he chooses to surround himself with worked for Clinton.  I think this one is a stupid move on Obama's staff part.  If you are going to put out there you own the change mantle don't boast how you have advisors that advised Clinton. Dumb just dumb.  Obama if he is nominated will go the way of Kerry and Gore if he keeps this up.
So...actually some names are there for purposes of filling the gaps.
What a shame, Hillary!
No wonder when the names came out they didn't have former (or current) designations against them as opposed to what Barack's campaign put out on the 19th:

Irrespective of the people supporting each of these candidates, they need individual good judgment - the ability to process often conflicting ideas given by those that advise them.  This judgment is demonstrated through the way they analyze the data given to them, for example about Iraq or Iran, and make a judgment about it.
Uh, Ambassadors buy their ambassadorships nowadays via fundraising for a candidate.  Doesn't mean they know jack squat about foreign policy.  Kind of embarrassing on her part to point that out.
obama got his foreign policy experience when he was learning to pee standing up!
Foreign policy doesnt matter if you cant get domestic policy right.

Watch Obama "triangulate" on this one. Agent of change? Nah!!! Just another politician.

Fumbling, fumbling...oh that sinking feeling. LOL...

EVEN AL GORE ENDORSE OBAMA, STILL HE WILL NOT ELECT AS PRESIDENT IN GENERAL ELECTION AGAINST REPUBLICAN BECAUSE HE HAS NO EXPERIENCE AT ALL. ALSO HE IS ACCUSING ONE AFTER ANOTHER. IN THE BEGINING HE WAS AFTER SENATOR HILARY CLINTON, NOW HE IS AFTER JOHN EDWARDS BECAUSE HE IS LOSING GROUND IN PRIMARY.THEREFORE PLEASE DON'T TRY TO WASTE YOUR VOTE
TO NOMINATE HIM AS A DEMOCREATIC PRESIDENT. MAKING A BIG MISTAKE AND WE WILL BE SUFFERING ANOTHER MORE FOUR YEARS WITH REPUBLICAN AGAIN.

yeah, this guy who voted 'ABSENT' on the Iranian resolution- that's Obama judgement. Like most things with this guy, that's sweet talking foreign policy at best!
Ok people please look at the facts. This report was as of 2004. Imagine what it would look like today! Also the USA Today poll showed only Clinton ahead of all Republicans. http://www.ppionline.org/ppi_ci.cfm?knlgAreaID=127&subsecid=177&contentid=252964004.
Wasn't Hillary Clinton overheard saying she just didn't have a good "feel" for Iowa?  Geez, if she can't figure out Iowa and didn't know the importance of retail politics, and suddenly it's a miracle if she wins in Iowa, how is she going to figure out and deal effectively with the rest of the world?
Hillary just found a few new names to add to her list. There's the guy down the street wearing French cuffs, another one who had Chinese last night, and still a third who loves German chocolate cake. Speaking of Germans, at least we can guess all the scientologists in Germany are for Hillary, but that's another story.
I've come to the conclusion after reading these comments that Obama supporterd are hateful. Everyone needs to take a chill pill here and realize that different people have different ideas.  Respect that and stop all the name calling and ridiculous remarks. Every candidate has strengths and weaknesses.  We, the voters, should be evaluating them on those ideals that we feel are important.  But I wish that people would just stop the name calling and state their positon without resorting to what amounts to verbal smears.
Let's get real.  The only reason to insinuate that Clinton was right to support Bush's rush to war in Iraq is self guilt.  75 percent of us got it WRONG.  Dead Wrong.  Letting Hillary skate for being part of the worst policy decision of our time is just letting 'our' own asses off the hook for being such force-fed mules after 9-11.  Everybody likes to feel good about themselves. But it doesn't change the Truth.

Some people did see the ruse at the time.  And some saw through it and STILL decided not to Triangulate their politics against the odds of popular opinion.

One of those people is even running for President.
Good for us !  Unless we choose to be cowards again and bury our heads in the mud.  It would cut against the weakness of our own grain, with unexpected humility, to do anything but make the same mistakes again.  But miracles do happen.

Wake Up people.  It's time to Rise and Shine again.
HUM

Isn't it interesting that the dim bulb Mika on Morning Joe has her father Zbigniew Brzezinski and brother and possible her husband working for Barack Obama.

And Mika trashes Hillary when she can on the program.

Amazing isn't it?
What kind of President Hillary will be? Think about it?
-Plant questions
-Create fake black pastors list in SC
-Create fake Foreign Policy Experts list
- Pratic smear Campaign through Bill Shaheen, Bob Kerrey, Campaign staffers forwarding Emails
- Can't stand one single position for just one minute (flip flopp)

One last thing, people should check her "35 years of experience", this is the biggest lie ever. She doesn't  experience at all. If she is experience enough so is Laura Bush. She also traveled in more than 70 countries.
Is Albert Milbank listed as Obama supporter and worker related to the newsperson who is negative to Hillary...Dana Milbank????????
The person who does name calling is Hillary and Bill. One talking about drug and islam through her campaign staffers and the other clintonianising on Charlie Rose. So who is doing name calling? The same who talk about Kindergarten essay.
Middle Ground: I totally agree with you here. What will come as a 'shock' to a lot of the Obama supporters is IF he makes it thru the primaries and the gloves come off from the Republicans. He's had a real easy ride so far - as everyone gangs up on HRC. Clinton has a much better shot in the general election and those trying to destroy her now know it.
What's important is Barack Obama's judgemet, on important issues such as against the war in Iraq, running a transparent government.
HRC can not be trusted, 47 out of 83 is still a big portion, her response was pathetic even if it was true

But someone mentioned that HRC has a lot on the platter, that's true, let's look at it:

Vince Foster (Suicide?)
Don't ask Don't tell
Johnny Chung
Travelgate
Whitewater
Norman Hsu
Peter Paul
Campaign funds tied to LITE (A terrorit group)

The list going on...

Maybe she have a lot on her platters, too bad only it's full of venom and snakes, under neath the nice colorful candy cones of 90s.
Obama supporters are not hateful, we are just tired of all the lies from HRC campaign and defending our candidate, Barack Obama, because he's the only one that can fundamentally change the poisonous politics of washington and lead the country to a new direction.
Every election we vote on issues, but this election we face the same issues, and all of them somehow emerge to be almost on the same stances, especially you can see the transition Hilary made, from when her poll numbers were high until now.
We need a president who's true and honest even when things are not in his favor, who stays on course, listen to advices of people (Even from his rivals), have great judgement. And that person is Barack Obama. Thank you and no hating hilary supporters, you all re just mis-informed.
Yes, Middle Ground, agreed - Obama supporters are probably the most hateful, vile, mudslingers at other Democrats than any other candidate's supporters - they're the first to turn their attacks on Democratic heroes like Joe Wilson, Bob Kerrey, Bill Clinton, Paul Krugman.  So much for hope and being above the fray.  From the comments on this board, Obama supporters (or maybe they're Republican trolls amping up support for Obama)are close to fanatical.
I think the passion that many of you are noticing on the part of Obama supporters comes from an understanding of what's at stake in this election. Contrary to the deeply held views of many HRC supporters (and I might add those views have been expressed on these boards with equal vitriol), a careful analysis of the political reality in Nov 08 will show that Clinton is by far the weakest possible Democratic candidate in the general election (leaving out Kucinich/Dodd/Gravel, of course), because she is the candidate most able to unite Republican opposition and least able to garner interparty support. That's not even mentioning her years of baggage, and the serious concern many of us have of fostering a 30-year, 2-family oligarchy. I support Obama not only because he's smart, articulate, charismatic, and seems capable of attracting Republican & Independent support in the general, but also because he seems to be the candidate best positioned to deny HRC the nomination. I firmly believe Clinton would be a disastrous candidate, and if by some grace of God she were elected in the fall, I firmly believe she would be no better than a mediocre president. Don't we deserve a chance at greatness?
Middle Ground; you seem to be concerned that the comments are drifting away from the news above.  You may have a point there.  What is your view on the validity of the report, which says Hillary Clinton issued a list of foreign policy experts that seems to be padded.  Do you find the article establishes that on a factual basis, or do you think it is slanted?

So from your point of view, True of False: the Clinton list appears to be padded with the names of those who either served as assistants, with lobbyists, fundraisers or those who had little connection to foreign policy.

If the article is factually correct, what do think about it?
Obama wants to move away from the 90s but now is fighting for people who made the 90 great. I knew he could not be trusted.

Hillary has the most importnat advisor, Bill!
With so many of her husband's foreigh advisors advising her, Hillary STILL voted for the Iraq War? And Obama spoke out so eloquently and presciently against it in 2001? If this contrast demonstrates Hillary's experience against Obama's judgment, then she is clearly OVER THE HILL, and he should be our President for the perilous 21st century.
Actually, Lissa Muscatine has done a lot of foreign policy speechwriting.  For example, she was the one who wrote the First Lady's Beijing speech, working with Madelaine Albright and other advisors.  So covering Wimbeldon really does not do her justice and is not a fair characterization of Ms. Muscatine who traveled as a speechwriter overseas working with both First Lady Hillary Clinton and President Clinton.
Don't believe Tony Lake was Secretary of the Navy.
