Obama asked about connection to Islam

Posted: Saturday, December 22, 2007 4:22 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan
At a stop at Smoky Row Coffee Shop in Oskaloosa, Obama sat down to eat some pumpkin pie with four local women and ended up having to explain how he was not a Muslim.

An older woman seated at the table asked Obama to explain his Muslim heritage, to which the candidate replied, "This is something that keeps on being misreported, so I’m glad you asked me."

Obama was referring to an e-mail chain accusing him of being a Muslim with an intent to undermine the United States. Early this year, false reports also circulated that he had attended a madrassa as a child. Obama explained his connection to Islam in this way:

"My father was from Kenya,” he said, “and a lot of people in his village were Muslim. He didn’t practice Islam. Truth is he wasn’t very religious. He met my mother. My mother was a Christian from Kansas, and they married and then divorced. I was raised by my mother. So, I’ve always been a Christian. The only connection I’ve had to Islam is that my grandfather on my father’s side came from that country. But I’ve never practiced Islam."

More: "For a while, I lived in Indonesia because my mother was teaching there. And that’s a Muslim country. And I went to school. But I didn’t practice. But what I do think it does is it gives me insight into how these folks think, and part of how I think we can create a better relationship with the Middle East and that would help make us safer is if we can understand how they think about issues."

"But I'm a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ and have been there 15 years," Obama added.

But the woman who asked the question still wasn't satisfied. She asked Obama to "define what a Christian is."

"Somebody who believes in Jesus Christ as our lord and savior," the senator responded.

"I'm so glad to hear that," she said.

Any other discussion of religion was quickly put to a close by campaign staffers, who ushered in a ruddy-cheeked little girl to talk with Obama.

Joseph, WHY DONT YOU USE YOUR FULL NAME
Keep pushing this racism my fellow democrats and see blacks sit out this election and turn to a third party canididate such as Bloomberg/Hagel if they should run.  We supported the Democratic Party and Clintons for years and this is what it has come down too.  Let's see what happens to the grand old party once black flight has taken place, then the Democrats in most places wouldn't be elected for even a dog catcher post.  Keep it up, you reap what you sow.
Obama wrote a book that talks about everything you have ever heard in the news.  None of this is new.

Maybe more Americans should read books.
Joseph - most people do not use their middle names, so why should Obama?

It doesn't matter what religion someone is BORN into.  What matters is how they conduct themselves and the choices they make.  Obama actually made the effort to chose Christianity, if that happpens to mattter to you.

Only a very small percentaage of people in this world are terrorists.  They are of many different religions, including Protestant, Catholic, Baptist, Muslim and many others.  If you knew anything about the rest of the world, you would know this.

Most people in the world do not hate black people.    Most people do not hate Muslims, in fact there are probably more Muslims in the world than there are Chrstians.  People that lack education and the ability to think for themselves are usually the ones who discriminate because they cannot make intelligient distinctions between the appearance of a person at birth versus the ability of that person to become an individual beyond his stereotype.  They also do not take the time to learn about other ways of thinking or cultures.

When I hear people that claim to be intelligient spewing garbage about another's race or religion, it causes me to doubt the validity of what they say.  They are simply advertising their inability to think for themselves and that they base their opinions on archaic and simpleminded stereotypes instead of basing their opinion on what an individual stands for as a human, what they have accomplished, and their abilities.  These are the same simpletons that beleive the rhetoric spewed by unscrupulous politicians in order to acheive their mischeif.

These are often the same people that think nobody else has the ability to be right.

If you can't think for yourselves, if you must rely on race or religion to choose a president - please don't waste my time~!

Does anyone else feel the same way?
<<Maybe more Americans should read books. >>

We do, but it's the Democrats who struggle with it. They are more into communication via sock puppets.
OK, the "Obama is Muslim" lie is being put to rest, now it's time to attack his Christianity as being somehow suspect.  If you want to know that the United Church of Christ REALLY stands for the place is www.ucc.org .
If this forum represents the cultural-political-racial literacy of Americans across the board, then it doesn't matter who wins the White House in '08: we're all screwed.

That said, Obama's got my vote.

Two questions: (A) Who is so bent on keeping you afraid? and (B) What's in it for them?
What nonsense.  The man is named Barry O'Bama -  surely he's a good Irish Catholic.
haha............haaha.......jeff myhre
wow.  the debate here is whether he is or isn't a muslim.  why does it matter?  even if he was a muslim, why would that be a problem? to those of you who raise this concern, would you be against any muslim running for office in america? I thought all religions were treated equally here... read the first amendment! this paranoia of islam has got to stop.
the name Barrack actually appears in the Old Testament of the King James version of the Bible. so it is a Christians name.

worry more about 4000 dead American boys and girls and the lies bush and co. have spread, worry more about the destruction of American middle class, worry more about children hurting and dying because our healthcare system is so expensive and corrupt.

to see true evil witness petty men that will tarnish and lie about good men's records without any conscience:

bush at press club dinner looking for wmd as a joke while our boys and girls are dying. real funny.

republicans wearing band aids to their convention to mock a double purple  heart winner.

republicans running ads comparing max cleland from georgia to osama bin laden.

these are vicious, hate filled evils of souless people and may God have mercy on their souls,

the news media has been co-conspirators in the process.
The American people are ignorant about our great religion Islam and the Quran. 1/4th of the world population follow Islam. The Quran contains the latest version of God's messages.

Typical Americans are brain washed a lot by the propaganda channels CNN and FOX day and night. Add to that the fact that most Americans are still racists.

Obama has two weak points. His Color and his connection to Islam because of 9/11.  Beware America! Obama may order to drop a nuclear bomb on New York City. This is going to be the CNN and FOX propaganda if Obama gets closer and closer to winning.

What does it matter whether Obama is a Muslim or a Christian or a Jew?   Does it really matter?   Being a US citizen, he is eligible to run for Presidency.  The question we should really ask is whether he would make a good President and bring back the respect and admiration the people all over the world had for the US which were destroyed by Bush and his cronies.
"***Why he dont use His full name????***
Well Joseph, other than the bad grammar, why should he be expected to use his full name?
Last election how many political signs did you see with George Walker Bush, of John(I don't even know his middle name)Kerry?
Why should Sen. Obama be held to a different standard? "

Exactly. What's Kerry's middle name? What's Al Gore's middle name? John Edwards' middle name? What's Rudy Giuliani's name? What about Mitt Romney?

Barack Obama does not use his name any differently than any other candidate. If he was trying to hide his name he would have changed it before running.
i wish to speak for GOD. you folks talk about being a christian. let me or god set you strait. if you can read ROMANS 6CH AND VERSES 1-17, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO CALL YOURSELF A CHRISTIAN  SAYS GOD  READ IT I DARE YA

so he was Muslim untill
From the execerpts from his books, Obama says that his mother was an athiest, and the very model of a secular humanist.  His father was a militant Muslim, moved the family to Indonesia, but left the family for Kenya when Barack was 2.  His mother then married another Muslim, who worked as a manager for an oil company.  Barack was schooled in Muslin public school for two years, then a catholic school.  Barack's sister says that he did pray in the local mosque as a child.  Barack's mother divorced this second husband and settled in Hawaii.  Barack adopted christianity in his 20's, joining a black church that has been accussed of being racist in its teaching.  The fact that Barack left his muslim religion makes him a "murtadd", an apostate (one who leaves the Islam religion).  The penalty for this can be death, but in cases when the apostate is someone who leaves before puberty, Islam usually will not seek death.

The point here is (1) Barack is untruthful about his personal history, and (2) his church affiliation presents serious doubts about his alligience to American principles.  It's a much bigger story than Romney's Mormanism but hardly a peep has been said in the mainstream press.  Any other candidate would had their ties to such a church fully exposed.

Before I can vote for this man as president, I need him to come clean on these issues.  The last two presidents are best known for their lies to the American people, do we really want another one?
I have serious reservations regarding Senator Obama's religious background. However, my real concern is his own written words, " I feel deep hatred for my mother's people". As you well know, if was his campaign which started the racial comments and for which Bill Clinton was falsely accused. It's stunning to see the media in this country completely giving this man a free rein. The GOP will not be so lenient. McCain will blow him away if he is the nominee. I'm hoping the American people will wake up to fact that they need to take a real close look at this man. For many you will uncover a man whose background is suspect, his accomplishments inconsequential and his experience lacking.
wasnt he endorsed by someone from islam,i have heard so much about this and his religon, but i know me and alot of other people will not vote for him.to much being told. like that old saying.where theres smoke theres a flame some where.
