Hillary charges Obama agreed with Bush

Posted: Saturday, December 22, 2007 4:45 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli
MILFORD, N.H. -- Clinton today said it was “silly” of Obama to ask why top foreign policy officials from her husband’s administration were now supporting him, and said the campaign shouldn’t be based on lists.

Clinton, after shaking some hands and posing for pictures with patrons of the River House Café, stopped to take questions from reporters and was asked to respond to Obama’s claims of greater support from Clinton administration figures.

“Obviously we demonstrated that that wasn’t accurate," Clinton said, alluding to a list produced by the campaign last night, which First Read reported on earlier. "But really that’s not the point. You can have lists of people who are advising you but what matters is who’s sitting behind the desk in the Oval Office, and who’s ready to be president on Day One.”

Obama had asked rhetorically why “the national security advisor, the secretary of the navy for Bill Clinton, the assistant secretary of state for Bill Clinton” had endorsed him. “I just think that it’s kind of a silly question,” Clinton responded today. “I mean, honestly it’s a silly question. We have hundreds of people’s support. … This is not a campaign between lists of advisers. This is a campaign between real people with experience and qualifications to be president on Day One.”

Clinton continued to emphasize that the real debate for voters should be which candidate, and not which policy team, was most qualified. “We cannot predict every challenge and every crisis that will come to the attention of our president, and therefore it’s important to pick the person who can make the best decisions,” she said. “When the door closes, and you’re having to make those difficult decisions that presidents confront every day, ultimately there is no adviser you can count on. You have to make the decision and live with the consequences.”

Obama had said the reason so many former Clinton advisers were backing him was based on his opposition to the Iraq war and the Kyl-Lieberman amendment on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. Clinton countered that their records on Iraq are closer than Obama would have voters believe.

“He wasn’t in the Congress at the time,” she said, “and when he was running for the Senate, he said that he basically agreed with George Bush’s policy and conduct of the war. When he came to the Senate he voted to support it. So I think that once you’re in a position of responsibility and you actually have to be counted by what you do or what you look for, his record is the same as many of us.”

Clinton added that based on her experience “during the previous administration” and on the Senate Armed Forces Committee that she is “in a very good position to withdraw our troops in a safe, responsible way, starting as soon as possible.”

The Obama campaign responded to Clinton’s comments in an e-mailed statement by again highlighting the Iran vote. “If Senator Clinton wants to make this election about who's made the best decisions on foreign policy, that's a comparison we're happy to make since Barack Obama is the only major candidate who opposed the war in Iraq and refused to give George Bush the benefit of the doubt on Iran.”

The Milford stop was the second for Clinton today. After speaking with reporters, she went outside to greet a throng of supporters who had been pressing against the café’s windows taking pictures. As she worked her way through the crowd, Clinton distributed candy canes and wished voters a merry Christmas.

OBAMA,IS NOT READY TO BE THE PRESIDENT OF THE U.S.A. HE LACKS EXPERIENCE HIS WHOLE TALK HAS BEEN ADOUT IRAQ,OF COURSE THATS IMPORTANT,BUT ITS DONE,AND REGARDLESS OF SENATOR CLINTON, VOTING YES OR NO, PRESIDENT BUSH WAS GOING TO WAR ANYHOW.THAT WAS HIS PLAN IN THE BEGINNING. REMEMBER THE PRESDENT HAS THE LAST WORD.GO HILLARY, WE NEED YOU FOR PRESIDENT.
Anyone sick of all this sniping can go to johnedwards.com and read about real, substantive policies to get our country back on track.  Then go to realclearpolitics.com , click on "head to head match-ups," and see that Edwards has the best average against Republican opponents (he beats all, consistently ... Recent polls show he also would carry North Carolina, making him the only viable Dem. in the south.)
Ready to lead on day one.  What the hell does that mean?  It can't mean that we should trust her good judgment because I haven't seen any evidence of good judgment.  Not in her war votes, in her cozying up to special interests, not in who she has chosen to run her campaign, not in her use of surrogates to launch personal attacks, not in how loosely she vets her large contributors.

Is it because Bill will be at her side?  No way! We're not electing Bill as first tutor.  It's her leadership, not his that we're supposedly electing or did she forget that?  I mean, if it's Bill's leadership, then perhaps we should just forego with the 22nd amendment and allow Bill to run for a third term, God forbid (only FDR had the poor judgment to break that tradition, before law prohibited it).  Or maybe we should just establish a dictatorship and allow the corridors of power to be completely overtaken by the growth of corrupting forces.

The longer this campaign continues, the more pissed off I am at the Clintons for trying to pull off this scam, this power grab.  My oldest daughter said to me the other day, "Dad, if she gets the nomination, you have to vote for her, to keep the Republicans out."  I answered, "Honey, what whould be the difference?"
Obama '08
more than i hate people who lie is dumb people who lie . For you people that say obama sponsered the same bill as kyl leb. that is a lie or you are just dumb and dont understand politics . his bill was to keep the congres from calling the iran guard a terror group by keeping the language confined to the state department . which means its no more than bush saying it . So ethier stop telling lies or do your homework.
"I'll stick with a proven leader - Hillary Clinton '08"

Paul

Oh my where to start.  Lets see a proven leader who voted to take us into a war in Iraq where it turned out later that the reason for the invasion was bogus.  A leader who voted to start the process of going to war with Iran only to find out later that again the basis for the vote (prevent Iran's nuclear weapon program) was bogus.  A proven leader who could not deliver health care reform even with a Democratic President, House, and Senate.  A proven leader whose education reform in Arkansas left the state worse off then when her reform began (the state was 43rd in the country and when Bill left office in 1992 it was 49th).

If this is what you mean by "proven leadership" I think I will pass in favor of someone who was against the Iraq war from the start, who did not support the Kyl/Liberman resolution, who has a history while a state legislature in Illinois of getting campaign finance and death penalty reform passed, and who got campaign finance reform passed while in the US Senate.

Obama '08
Wow.  Hillary's supporters have resorted to conflating 9/11 and Iraq.  How very Rovish.

Here is Obama pre-Iraq War:

"But I also know that Saddam poses no imminent and direct threat to the United States, or to his neighbors, that the Iraqi economy is in shambles, that the Iraqi military a fraction of its former strength, and that in concert with the international community he can be contained until, in the way of all petty dictators, he falls away into the dustbin of history. I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a US occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences. I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of Al Qaeda. I am not opposed to all wars. I'm opposed to dumb wars."

Here is Hillary:

"In 1998, the United States also changed its underlying policy toward Iraq from containment to regime change and began to examine options to effect such a change, including support for Iraqi opposition leaders within the country and abroad.

In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including Al Qaeda members, though there is apparently no evidence of his involvement in the terrible events of September 11, 2001.

It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons. Should he succeed in that endeavor, he could alter the political and security landscape of the Middle East, which as we know all too well affects American security."

She hadn't even read the NIE when she said that.  Let's get serious folks.  There's just no comparison on this.
Obama didn't take the chance to make news in 2004 by criticizing then Presidential nominee Kerry for his vote.  I don't think it would have been a smart move for him to dump on democrats,  Hillary would have tho...  If she had only poll-tested it back then
Dover, NH, Obama is not fortunate to have a former preseident as a husband, I wonder what they talk about, because she has made bad judgement after bad judgement.
You wanna tell how one will be when he/she becomes presiednt? Look at how they run their campaign. I think so far Obama has rum a decent, transparent and formidable campaign. He has own all his fight by not sayin much, short and straight to the point but it stinks like a bee.

Merry Christmas
jds, slc, ut.

Yeah, they'll all mobilize . . . but I don't think all two of them can beat her.
Obama is not a muslin. War and drugs are forbidden.
He is just another All American Boy who resists the worship of Drugs, Sex and ROCK and ROLL! Ya can't be a true christian till ya ask Jesus to save ya and send ya to heaven when you die.  All angels are welcome to the kingdom of heaven. Repent, accept Jesus and you too can ascend! Sing it Oprah!
The poll numbers for Obama vs Repubs mean nothing right now, especially for him.  They haven't gone after him yet and they won't because they're praying for him.  When they start going after him the way they've been going after Hillary then show me the numbers.

Republicans are the weakest they've been in decades and we're going to give them a 1 term senator with a very weak voting record, muslim heritage, addmitted cocaine use, middle name Hussein, and a first name one letter away from Osama. ...  Merry Christmas Mitt Romney, would you like our candidate giftwrapped or will you defeat him in a landslide here?
Recently free ride for Obama from political press and it feels besieged it has to bat away incessant questions with Obama's significant shifts/ flip flopping on issues such as Patriot Act, Defense of Marriage Act, Fast Track trade authority and benefits for same-sex couples. Given how little experience, campaign doesnt want any focus on his record, clearly raise questions about his electability and serves reminder about how little the public knows about his positions. Illinois chapter of the National Organization for Women, Obama said he would vote to repeal the Patriot Act. In 06 Obama voted for the redrafted version of the Patriot Act that made only minor changes. On Defense of Marriage Act Obama answered No, to the question: "Do you support repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. On Fast Track authority, which requires Congress to vote yes or no and without amendments on pending trade deals, Obama opposes Fast Track authority. Benefits for same-sex couples, Obama said he would need to evaluate the fiscal impact before extending Social Security benefits to same-sex couples. Obama is involved in a suspicious real estate deal with an indicted political fundraiser, Antoin Tony Rezko. Obama also linked to an alleged influence peddling scandal and was nabbed conducting campaign business in his Senate office, a violation of federal law. In addition three political aides on Sen. Barack Obama’s payroll are registered lobbyists for dozens of corporations, including Wal-Mart, British Petroleum and Lockheed Martin, while they received payments from his campaign, according to public documents. The Oprah Winfrey endorsement might have generated a lot of press for Barack Obama, but not a lot of impress, particularly among younger women, a poll released wednesday shows a third said they were less likely to support the Illinois senator because of the Oprah support. Older women, over 65, also showed they were ruffled by Ms. Winfrey stepping "out of her pew," as the daytime diva herself described it. About 17 percent of older women said the endorsement made them less likely to support Mr. Obama. "Oprah's endorsement represents a disconnect to me between what the community needs and her motives, which are likely strategic and brand oriented," he says. "More than a black president, what black America needs are an economic environment that is conducive to optimal job creation and a radical reform of the public school system, and in both instances Obama is not the guy." The truth is going to surprise, and disappoint, and outrage many people who were drawn to him. He has lied to the American people, and he has sought to misrepresent his own heritage.
I suggest people look for Clinton's actual 2002 speech before they accept excerpts that pretend she voiced no concerns about the war.

I can't help but toss my two-bits-worth into this.  Please forgive my tyrannical post, but all of the comments here are just too much to bear without some strong language to counter them.  With that being said...

There are some great comments here, and some, well, brainless ones.  This one is the worst:

"I am so tired of this blame Bush, blame HRC,blame everyone that suported the Iraq war vote. People we as a country are so weak. Sen Clinton you voted yae because with the info you had it was the right thing to do. [...] Quit apologizing for making a decision to protect my family!!!"

just grow some b**** (Sent Saturday, December 22, 2007 7:49 PM)

I think people are failing to see why the 2002 Iraq vote is so important in this election.  This was clearly a war that was built upon a poorly veiled desire to dethrone Saddam Hussein and open up the Iraqi oil fields.  After-the-fact revealings of these motives have only proven that we have some rotten apples in D.C., and the voting process is the only non-violent means to mitigate this problem.

Responsibility - how does one take responsibility for all of the soldiers' families who've lost their moms and dads, sons and daughters?  How does one take responsibility for the COUNTLESS Iraqi lives that have been lost, and continue to suffer and wallow in misery  even as we Americans celebrate Christmas!?  None of these politicians cared about American families, outside of their own and the gains they would win from the windfalls of a U.S. wartime economy.

If these politicians want to even talk about responsibility, they should resign and leave politics.

Further, let me note that saying something doesn't make it so.  No matter how many of Hillary's blog-trolls want to cast Obama as the precocious black boy who dares to interrupt her rightful ascension to become the first woman who received the democratic nomination for president, people aren't buying it.  You may have rights, but some of these recent comments edges towards outright slander.  People simply won't tolerate that - here or anywhere.

Finally, what give people the idea that being muslim is somehow "an issue"?  Obama has clearly stated many times that he is a Christian.  Just because his middle name is "Hussein" is not an excuse to fabricate rumors.  There is nothing wrong with Islam, nor should it be implied that Islam isn't welcome in the U.S. as equal to Christianity.

Please stick to the truth.  Of course, with some candidates, that means they'll never win an election.
@Scott,New York, I've checked his record and will gladly give you 3 reasons. 1)Transparency...He believes that everything should be transparent in government, so there can be no secrets. He co-sponcered a bill doing just that with government funds. 2)Hope...regardless of what you and the rest of the Senator Obama haters on this page think. He brings hope in that this country does not have to be as down trodden as it is at this time. We don't have to be the most hated country in the world. It does not have to be politics of old. Business as usual, the trickle down theory. 3) HONESTY....This administration has lied to the people so many times, that we don't even pay attention to it anymore. The Clintons lie like a rug. Ask Bill did'nt he really inhale, and while your at it ask hillary did'nt she inhale also. Democrats, Republicans and Independents know that Senator Obama will be Brutally Honest. Which is why he will attract all three voting blocks.
Now Scott whats good for the goose. You tell me 3 just 3, things that Hillary has accomplished (excluding being first lady) in her 35 years of experience. We are
           FIRED UP.........READY TO GO!

People have a right to be wary of Muslims. The filthy scum who attacked us on 9/11, the filthy scum who dared to use our own planes to attack us were Muslims,  whose religion was Islam, so yes people have a right to be concerned and any questions about Obama's backround are completely justified. People have a right to ask these questions about him. Obama should give a speech like Romney did to lay to rest any fears people may have about his having a Muslim parent.

As far as Obama's "new ideas and new direction" spiel,  that's all well and good in theory and thought, but in real life it takes drive and experience and a strong work ethic to get things done, to make dreams into a reality. I have yet to hear Obama spell out exactly how he plans to get all these things done. He thinks he will just snap his fingers and the congress will give him what he wants, well, it just doesn't work that way.
hillary could not lead on day one or day 101.  I really cant satnd it when she say she is ready to lead on day one..... please!!!!! Does she really think americans are that stupid.

No Hillary wake up and see the truth

Obama 08 - america needs him
TEACH 53 IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM DECIDING ON VOTING FOR HILLAY, YOU HAVE A PHYSCO PROBLEM   LET ME HELP   GO TO BILL CLINTON PARDONS.COM  AND HILLARY'S BIO AND CHECK OUT HER COMMUNIST TIES, WE'LL FORGIVE YOU
CLINTON IS SO DUMB SHE ASKED VOTERS TO CACUS FOR HER ON JAN 14 TEN DAYS LATE, NO WONDER SHE FLUNKED THE BAR EXAM. sHE MUST BE INHALING WHAT BILL LIES ABOUT AND SAYS HE DOESNT, GOD BLESS AMERICA FOR KOOKS LOL
A in depth look at two control freaks,

She wears the pants, and he wares a condom over his head. Such a terrible mistake to have made.

Like O.J, its the second time around, it will be He Clinton will go straight to jail. O.J will too.

As for Obama, he will have his chance. But this time around , he gets plenty of experience from a real professional lying paper hanger!!

America needs these to rats in the White House. Then the daily tabloids will stay in business
As a ardent democrat I just want to be assured we have a nominee who can not only win the election (which, to the poster who posted all those polls showing Obama ahead, when you look to averages of the 6 or 7 of those polls that have been conducted over the last few weeks Edwards is the most electable and Clinton still beats all the Repubs). I have serious concerns about Obama and his message, the truth is that overcoming partisanship is neither realistic nor prudent in today's Washington. For all you "progressives" who are so ardently in support of Obama, see a recent column by Paul Krugman in the NY Times pointing out the hypocrisy of the Obama campaign http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/17/opinion/17krugman.html

The Iraq/Iran issue and Obama's attacks on Clinton are ludicrous, considering he was not privy to the intelligence reports and was in the IL State Legislature at the time. Even if he claims he was against the war we will never know what he would have done had he been in the Senate, considering all we have is his word and in examining his record as a IL State Legislator it is clear he voted "present" multiple times as one of only two legislators,in order to avoid taking concrete positions on controversial issues, that certainly sounds like "triangulation" to me! Also, other than stories posted on fringe left wing blogs I have never seen a legitimate news story or even a statement from the Obama campaign verifying the supposed Harry Reid "trick" to prevent Obama for voting on Kyl-Lieberman. In fact, Frank Rich, a clear pro Obama columnist, even indicated in a recent article that Obama needs to address his absence, which he has continually failed to do.

The media has painted Obama in such a favorable light and has failed to even attempt to investigate or criticize legitimate issues in his career (with the exception of the NY Times investigation into his "present" votes) and in the current campaign. I was suprised and happy to see that Paul Krugman is asking the hard questions that regular voters should be asking themselves about Obama's message of "change," and whether it is actually practical in today's Washington.

I want a candidate who is experienced against the Republican attack machine and is not afraid to take on other Republican politicians and other right wing interest groups. Both Edwards and Hillary have proven much more adept at that, because they have actually been tested before. I would not call the Democratic nomination contest, up until now, a true test for Obama, especially when he has all major news organizations essentially promoting his campaign. Just wait until he is under the microscope of a general election.
Experience? Mrs. Clinton? Since when did being the wife of a president make one "experienced" enough to BE president? She is in the Senate where she has one vote on any issue. All the other senators have the same one vote. Has she ever been CEO of anything? Mayor, Governor Department Head? What experience does she have calling the shots at anything?
Wow! Hillary Clinton basically LIED (what's new) in claiming that Barack Obama agreed with "with George Bush’s policy and conduct of the war. When he came to the Senate he voted to support it." That is totally not true!! Barack Obama was from the start and has always been against the war. It was she who was for the war, voted for it and made statements supporting it. While Barack Obama disagrees with W and the war, he supports our armed forces and wants to ensure they have the resources they need for their mission, all the while trying to find ways to intelligently extract our forces from Iraq. When you're hearing stories like troops lacking basic items like body armor, the need to up-armor vehicles, how do you vote against funding for the troops? Unlike Hillary Clinton, he's worked hard on legislation to get our troops out of Iraq.
As usual, Hillary wants to yoke Obama to her failed stance on Iraq. Why is she so flipping dishonest!?!
