Tales from a Huck-A-Hunt

Posted: Wednesday, December 26, 2007 2:28 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Carrie Dann
OSCEOLA, IOWA -- Southern charmer Mike Huckabee, in the midst of a push to show his steely resolve in the face of direct attacks from one-time frontrunner Mitt Romney, polishes up his gun and sets off into the snowy fields of Iowa for an old-fashioned pheasant hunt.

It's just too easy.

On a trip rich with metaphorical potential, Huckabee donned a blaze-orange vest and ventured out into an icy Iowa countryside, with trusty bird-dog "Dude" and about 15 shivering members of the press corps in tow. It turns out that the governor, who says that he's been a hunter since childhood, is a pretty decent shot. He shot one of the three pheasants knocked down by the hunting party (the other two reportedly met their bird-maker at the hands of Huckabee Campaign Manager Chip Saltsman.)

The imagery of a gun-totin' politico wasn't lost on journalists, who peppered Huckabee with joking prompts for analogies between his feathered victims and his Republican competitors. The jolly gov, who's known for his sense of humor, was more than happy to comply.

On the symbolism of the hunt, Huckabee quipped: "You prove that you can shoot, and that if somebody really messes with you with negative campaign ads, they just need to be prepared."

On the cathartic satisfaction of going after the birds, he teased: "We will name the pheasants [after] other candidates. It gives us a real incentive."

"These three birds all said that they would not vote for me on caucus night," he joked when he returned with three bird carcasses. "The one that flew away," he added, "well, we saw a Huckabee button on his rear end, so we knew not to take him."

The frigid venture wasn't all fun, games and good-natured allusions to shooting uncooperative Iowans, though. It can't hurt that Huckabee publicly proved his varmint-hunting mettle in the wake of Romney's exaggeration about being endorsed by the NRA. "Its not something I had to go and get a primer in," Huckabee said of his lifelong hobby today. "It's not out of the ordinary for me."

Gun in hand, the governor also had harsh words for the aggressive tactics of his main rival in Iowa. Negative campaigning, he said, "really lacks credibility. Because it's in an opponent's desperate interest to try to throw last-minute things at you."

"The magician plays the game of keeping your focus over here on this hand while he's doing something over here with the other," he continued, waving his gloved right hand and brandishing the gun in his left. "I think people understand that sleight of hand is not why you elect a president."

I'm sure the gun-toting image appeals to all the same backward red-necked morons who voted for Bush because they felt like they could drink a beer with him at a barbecue.  Down-home charm is fine for your neighbor or your construction-site boss, but leave it to them or Andy Griffith, all right?  We need a brilliant leader, not a good 'ole boy. Please stop being threatened by intelligence, it's a requirement for the job.
So, Huck, killing pretty birds makes you feel more like a man?  Kinda like when your son hung a dog?  This whole hunting/gun/2d amendment showmanship nonsense is disgusting.  I thought we've evolved from being hunter/gatherers. Oh yes! Forgot. Huck denies evolution.  Of course, this was all a photo-op for the NRA gun obsessed neo-cons.
Huckabee raised a son to be a dog-killer, no surprise that he kills himself.  (Isn't there something in the Bible about killing?)
Huckabee raised a son to be a dog-killer, no surprise that he kills himself.  (Isn't there something in the Bible about killing?)
Huckabee is proving to be a shallow phoney.
Are there really voters who are swayed by the sight of a candidate going hunting? Kerry did the same thing back in '04, I think he got a brace of ducks. Big whoop.
Huckabee is dissapointing me!  He never answers questions ~ he just deflects them.  I don't think he'll have a chance after Iowa.
Huckabee is smokescreening... He doesn't any REAL substance - other than to tell everyone what a great Christian he is.  (Hey Mike - try letting US decide how great a Christian you are!)
At least it was clear that he wasn't shooting any members of the press that were with him.  This outing, whether he really hunts or not, was to show that he is pro-gun and a really manly man to the macho conservatives that think he might be too soft on the other issues.
Huckabee reminds me of Elmer Fudd
Win or lose Huck knows how to enjoy life, rommney has never been out in cold long enough to hunt.  Gullani hunts 2 legged dears and Mc Cain paid his dues with guns.
Huckabee scares me. Instead of admitting he raised a son who enjoys torturing snimals - he COVERS IT UP and then claims everyone else as "out to get him".  This was his typical response for anyone that call him into question while a Governor ~ do we really want this guy "COVERING THINGS UP" in Washington???

MSMNC clearly dislikes Huckabee.  Almost as much they as they dislike Clinton.

I am not a Republican and generally don't stick up for Republicans, but a bunch of wimps sitting in D.C. in suits and ties making fun of Huckabee for hunting, and for dressing like a hunter while doing it, is just plain dumb.

I saw tape from a brief interview done with Huckabee after the hunt.  I think he looked natural and authentic.  He didn't look like a fake.  The guy is a real hunter.

So you Ivy league guys, who have probably never walked through the woods before, can sit back sipping your Starbucks and yuck it back in D.C. but my guess is it can't hurt him with Iowa voters.
I thought pheasant season was in the fall, but just please tell me these weren't pen-raised birds released right in front of the shooter, ala Chicken Dick.

"Button on its butt" - sounds about right. I know cats really like showing off their Rudy buttons.)
Gun play by Huckabee?  Oh yeah - the king of "subliminal advertising" is back at it... (Another word for that is "lying")
Huckabee would actually stick with the ISSUES if he had a leg to stand on.
Huckabee puhlease!  You are the KING of negative advertising - You just use your "deceiving skills" to cover it up and make it LOOK innocent.  Is this what we'd expect from a presidency of yours?
vote for the only candidate you can truly trust...Mike Huckabee.
Huckabee says he missed the fourth bird because he didn't want to shoot in the direction of the press. Sigh. Missed opportunities.
Top Story of the Day (which first read will skip)

'COLUMBIA, S.C. - Two black South Carolina ministers listed by Barack Obama's campaign as endorsing his White House bid say they did no such thing.'

todays AP... BO caught lying again.
Mike you are not Presidential material.  Since when is it negative to show statistics from an Associated Press release and his actual record as Governor.  Since when is it negative to compare the actual voting records of two candidates?  Isn't this what people need to know if they are going to make an informed decision?  Or would you rather people don't know about your ethics violations as Governor, your record of increasing taxes, your turning the state into a magnet for illegals.  If you agree with his record on illegal immigration, vote for him.  If you agree with him pushing to get a rapist paroled, by all means vote for him.  Just do it with your eyes wide open.  This is the type of judgment that he has - hardly Presidential.  We deserve better as a nation.

Do you consider this as news? Instead of shooting the birds, it would have been more productive to hand this nut a copy of our Constitution.
Pat and Doug- I agree completely.  Well said.
I don't know about you, but this whole episode gave me the creeps.....I'd vote for ANY democrat over you, Gov. Huck........
Mike, you're a practical, down to earth, real person. The quiche and caviar crowd will never understand you.
David Anders Pharr, Tx - here's one Christian who's praying he looses.
Wow... You can clearly see that this is quite the haven for Huck-a-haters.  Which I suppose is a sample of the larger mass of of liberal I read here.  "No substance" and "He has nothing to say" just isn't true.  Whether you like the man or not, name an issue you can prove the man has not spoken on?
Just what we need another good 'ol boy, redneck, better than thou, wear his religion on his sleeve, I know better than you, elitist jack ass in the Whitehouse. We've already ahd that for 8 years, lets try something different.
Somehow, the admission of a love for Jesus is a very refreshing thing for me.  Since so much power has been taken away from the president, why does the candidate have to be so well versed on EVERY subject!
I think Mike Huckabee can sit down and peaceably discuss any and all situations in and for our country.
It does not take smooth talkers and rich lawyers.  It takes someone like Mike Huckabee!  He could make a great wonderful change for our country.
One of those "factual" ads by Romney criticized Huckabee for reducing the penalties for meth dealers.  Of course, Romney fails to mention that after the reduction, the minimum sentence in Arkansas was still longer than the maximum sentence in Romney's Massacusetts.
Pete Stanley, Lima, Peru - give me a break. This is a typical class warfare response to get people to hate others who have more than they have.  What part of "thou shalt not covet" don't you understand?  The great thing about America is we have the opportunity here for ANYONE to work hard (and smart) and make their lives better.  No, not everyone's going to be living like Bill Gates, but that's not the point.  My mother was raised in a chicken coop without running water and I am in the top 5% for wage earners in America.  Where else are you going to get that opportunity?  If we want to go around and pick on anyone who has more than you, why don't you start picking on Huckabee for accepting over $100,000 in gifts.  Funny thing he said at the end of the article:

"The magician plays the game of keeping your focus over here on this hand while he's doing something over here with the other,"

Mike, it takes one to know one.

Grassboots, great - you can make a point for 10% of the add.  How about the other 90%.  Go right ahead.  Same response Huckabee gave.
Despite saying that hunting wasn't something Huckabee had to get a "primer" on in the full article on his spontaneous hunting junket, he said that he "understands the culture of being outdoors." I think most hunters just go hunting; they don't stand around ruminating about the "culture" of being outdoors.

Huckabee, you're getting more transparent by the moment.
Huck-a-nut. . .

I'd vote again for Bill Clinton over Huckanut. Atleast Clinton had some ecumenical knowledge to run the country.
Some of these posts are telling. I'm not a gun person myself but I do recognize the right to own them under the Constitution.

Many people here are mocking those who own guns or hunt, as if the mere idea of doing so is automatically a redneck or white-trash sort of thing. That you're a "killer" if you are a hunter. I wonder how many of those same people preach the idea of "tolerance" out of the other side of their mouth. And no wonder so many people who do hunt are turned off by big-city progressives.
I'm a Canadian, the closest thing on the face of this planet you will find to an American. I'm an admitted admirer of my my big brother to the south, who will kick the living crap outta you if you step on the little guy, but this made even me vomit in my mouth a little bit. Imagine the rest of the world. Huckabee on foreign policy: "At the risk of oversimplifying the whole discussion, let me just express – Sometimes the one thing I like to do is to try to make it where I can understand and hopefully others can too – When we were all kids growing up in a neighborhood, chances are there was one kid in our neighborhood who was really good at everything: he made straight As, ran faster, jumped higher and threw the ball better. He was just good at everything. When that kid acted like it and spiked the ball at our feet, waved his A-plus in our faces and danced around us when he scored the touchdown, do you remember how you felt toward that kid?[…]Take the same neighborhood and the same gifted kid, but this time instead of the kid rubbing your face in it, the kid is very thoughtful. When he sees that you really did your best and didn’t make the A on the spelling test, he says, “Hey, why don’t I come over and I’ll help you learn your spelling words.” And when he sees you struggling to hit the baseball, he says, “If you choke up on the bat you get better leverage and you can hit better, here, hit like this, try it.” Now, when the kid uses his strengths and his abilities and he encourages you and helps you to be your best, now what’s your attitude toward that kid? You want to be like him; you emulate him. You want to hang out with him. He’s your hero."
A lot of ignorant people on today... talking about stuff they don't know and really just making fools of themselves.
John McCain = Adultry/Wife Beater/tip toe around/ Amnesty/ as an American Veteran I disassociate myself with him. . .
Mitt, Mitt, full of cash.
Will you let me keep my stash? ( http://snipr.com/stephanopoulosdebate )
Savings, Yes, but paychecks, No!
Just another politico.
Hope for tax reform, I see, ( http://snipr.com/nextrung )
Will be voting HUCKABEE! ( http://snipr.com/fthuckabeeonirs )
I didn't hear anything about Huckabee dressing the bird and eating it. I've hunted just about every critter in Iowa, and I've eaten them after I did. To kill for sport is one thing. To kill for sustinence is another. I hope he ate the bird. There is another sustinenece hunter, who is languishing in a prison. If Huckabee swore to pardon him, I'd vote for him. Free Leonard Peltier. His time is running out.
"Since so much power has been taken away from the president,"

Oh. My. God. Lady - have been paying ANY attention, at all? Bush has been grabbing power and breaking the law from th eminute his monkey butt hit the seat.

Our laws state that a president's personal papers are available under the FOIA (that's Freedom Of Information Act, for you long time conservatives) 12 years after he leaves office. The very first crime Bush committed was sealing St. Ron of Reagan's papers. HUh. Wonder what criminals he was protecting with his "diminished" powers?

Oh yeah - Huck's a huckster.
"you're a "killer" if you are a hunter. I wonder how many of those same people preach the idea of "tolerance" out of the other side of their mouth."

"Tolerance for killers." You've certainly given us all food for thought.
Ian from Ann Arbor, why is Huckabee flip-flopping on taxes now that he's running for President?  His record as Governor certainly doesn't show that he's a fiscal conservative.  You want to know the truth about Mike's record, take a peek for yourself:

http://www.taxhikemike.org/

The only two issues that he's conservative on is abortion and gun rights.
Chuck the Huck - Phoney - No experience - Not a conservative - End.
Anyone interested in what Huckabee is really like face to face should try this funny (but it actually happened) column:

I have read much diatribe about Mitt Romneys seemingly unquenchable double speak, and that somehow this habit of his makes it impossible for us trust him. Of course, most of what political types say has never been trustworthy, regardless of what side of the aisle one sits upon.

It is behavior, far more than word, that tells me what is really in the heart of person.Show me the money. Talk is cheap! With a search for behaviors in mind, this is what I found when I went looking for Mitt Romneys actions, more than words

I found a man who has pledged to forego his salary as President of the United States and who refused the same as Mass. Governor. Imagine, the president as a true public servant..I find it supremely refreshing.

I found a man who recently spent a free Saturday morning in October helping San Diego fire victims, without so much as a word to the press? Chopping down trees and cleaning up the neighbor property. That sure makes him hard to trust.

I find a man who once shut down his private business, and paid his staff to search for the missing daughter of one of his employees? No questions or expectations, just lets go find her! No one was watching and no one was listening. What does this say about the man?

I found a man who has been loyal, faithful and true to his one wife and love for 38 years. Do we not realize what this says about a persons character, to have been so devoted and perfectly faithful in this most sacred of all relationships. And yet, some say he cant be trusted!

Finally, I find a candidate who routinely turns organizations fiscal mismanagement into economic victory for the company and its employees and interests. And far more importantly, there is no one suggesting that he ever broke any laws or violated ethics in doing so! No Blackwater, no Whitewater, no Halliburton.

So, I am left to conclude, given that I can trust no ones words, that it is only actions I can measure, and behaviors I can assess. From this standpoint, my choice for president is so easy and Mitt is that man!"
More Flip Flopping from Mitt Romney

A photograph of GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney at a 1994 Planned Parenthood fund-raiser has surfaced, once again raising questions about the former Bay State’s governor’s abortion flip-flopping.

The picture, a copy of which was obtained by the Herald, shows Romney and his wife Ann at a house party fund-raiser in Scituate with Nicki Nichols Gamble, who was the president of the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts at the time. Romney has already downplayed ties to Planned Parenthood after revelations that Ann Romney donated $150 to the group.

Gamble said the pic was snapped at an event at GOP activist Eleanor Bleakie’s house and that she “clearly” remembered speaking with Romney at the event. At the time, Romney was running as a pro-choice Republican against U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.).

“My recollection is that we talked about his senate candidacy and the fact that he was supporting Roe v. Wade and a choice agenda at the time,” Gamble told the Herald. “It was a Planned Parenthood event. We were there to discuss our programs and our advocacy.”

The event was held the same day Ann Romney wrote a check to the pro-choice group. Romney has previously said he had “no recollection” of his wife writing the check to Planned Parenthood.

Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom called the flap “a dog bites man story.”

“Governor Romney used to have a different position on abortion,” Fehrnstrom said. “He is now firmly pro-life and has made it clear that as President he will advocate for a culture that welcomes life and protects the sanctity of life. This is the same path that Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush followed.”

Because of his abortion shift, Romney has been branded a flip-flopper by his GOP primary opponents, as well Democrats. Romney has stated he became pro-life in 2004 during the stem cell debate in Massachusetts.

Beyond attending the event, Romney filled out a 2002 questionnaire for the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund in which he said he supported Roe v. Wade, sex education in schools and increased access to emergency contraception.

“With Mitt Romney, this has been more than a flip-flop. This has been an extreme makeover,” said Planned Parenthood spokesman Angus McQuilken. “What voters need to know about Mitt Romney is this: where he stands on any issue is always a moving target.”

Scott fromAZ--
you might want to back off on that "devoted" to his wife Romney-sugar coating. Any LDS man serious about his future possibilities of godhood will keep his wife/wives. But, DEVOTED? Just a day before Romney announced their move to Massachusetts so he could campaign for governor on his short trip hoping for the Oval Office, Ann announced they would NOT be relocating to Massachusetts for a campaign, since living in Utah is better for her health. Romney called a hold-on-there and the next day announced their move, for HIS devotion to HIS goal--not to HER health.

Just WHERE did you find your Romney stories, if NOT in the media?

Kindda like Romney-to-save-the-day after the tunnel collapsed, appearances at the sight, knowing more than even the contractors. If Romney knew so much, on camera, WHY didn't he PREVENT the collapse behind the scenes?

If Huckabee didn't have time to eat the bird, someone would have. Don't you know ?? Those redneck hillbillies who hunt, like to know the kill goes for food. People who hunt are not "killers" at odds with Christ. Did not Christ eat Lamb at His last meal? He didn't eat it 'alive.' Do such accusers even know about Christ? Or iss He just used to slap someone, bold enough to claim they are a Believer, in the face with insults? Since when is it OK in this country to admit to being atheist, humanist, Islamist, But NOT Christian?

Some people like to throw insults on people who give animals a fair chance at the hunt, while the accusers politely eat their KILL of the slaughterhouses, where animals have been pumped full of chemicals and hormones and penned up for most of their lives, channelled into the slaughter-houses where adrenaline pumps through their 'meat' as the 'kill' listens, at last, as the animals ahead begin preparations for 'the table' of those more 'civilized'--being 'killed' for those with more class. Did you ever wonder HOW you would eat if there were NO meat in the markets? NO beans on the shelves? Those stupid redneck hunters/fishermen/farmers will survive to tell their tales BEFORE the frail supermarket shoppers with more 'class.' Get real.

Romney? A guy who can't even be Forthright with American voters about his God can't be trusted for his word about anything else. A guy who comes undone over a few questions about his religion can't be trusted to maintain composure over untold questions about war. NO BLACKWATER???? He has chosen J.Cofer Black for his security advisor--BLACK, VICE-CHAIRMAN OF BLACKWATER, CHAIRMAN OF THE BLACK GROUP,LLC. BLACK, who was chosen by Tenet to get rid of the Taliban/Bin Laden BEFORE/DURING 911...who FAILED OUR NATION miserably. BLACK who is already criticized for wanting to GIVE TOO MUCH POWER TO 'PRIVATE SECURITY FIRMS'--like BLACKWATER, THE BLACK GROUP,LLC. A guy who chooses the security advice of someone who has ALREADY FAILED OUR COUNTRY via 911/Taliban still at large/bin Laden still at large/canNOT be trusted with our nation's security. A guy who makes HIS OWN MILLIONS by forcing buy outs of thousands of other AMERICANS' jobs, who held his own state at ZERO GAIN in employeed residents and 3RD FROM THE BOTTOM in NEW JOBS(even those stupid, redneck governors of southern states knew how to bring jobs into their states during the same term) he canNOT be trusted to do what is best for Our Nation's Economy. A guy who funds  gay/lesbian sex-ed classes for grade-school children WITH NO PARENTAL CONSENT or notification canNOT be trusted with our VALUES, canNOT be trusted for STRONGER AMERICAN FAMILIES AND HOMES. A guy who already admits he plans to increase our troops by 100,000 canNOT be trusted with the lives of our young people--with Romney's buy-out firm selling out American grown companies to foreign interests, more young people will HAVE TO turn to the military for jobs, more veterans will have NO JOBS to come home to. This man canNOT be trusted to be the next president of our United States. WAKE UP AMERICA !!
All the people calling Huckabee a "mouth breather" and "ignorant" for hunting, I bet they all go out and have hot dogs or Mickey D's burgers for lunch.

The Pheasants get a better life than factory farmed cows and chickens.

I swear people don't realize how many blue collar folks (dems and gop'ers AND indies) hunt and shoot. The same ones who criticise hunting and then go eat steak take the cake.
MICK, you have proven time and time again with your posts that you are without any reason and fall into the same camp of anti-mormon hatred and bigotry as Robert Jorgenson.  How about you two start your own country of hatred - America doesn't need any of your kind of "help".
"America doesn't need any of your kind of "help"."

That's not your call. I say we do need them.
