Romney holds off on closer speech

From NBC/NJ’s Erin McPike
MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Romney switched up his stump speech today and even kept notes with him to offer his closing remarks to New Hampshire voters, but his efforts were overshadowed by the death of Benazir Bhutto.

Reporters buzzed after he made a statement early this morning about Bhutto that he didn't offer his condolences, which he made certain to do later -- both in his remarks before supporters at the American Credit Union Museum and in a second session with reporters.

He refused to discuss what he would do in a hypothetical situation, but he summed up his message that the key is "to develop that kind of process and develop comprehensive strategies to help support moderate voices within the world of Islam so that we don’t have to be responding to crises."

Romney also said he didn't have the classified information available to offer much depth of insight into the situation, but he pointed out that he has been critical of Musharraf in the past for his decision to impose martial law in Pakistan.

He was also asked several questions about how his own experiences and lack of foreign policy credentials would affect his own decision-making processes and explained that ultimately the need for leadership skills supersede the need for foreign policy expertise.

"In any crisis, you're not going to turn to somebody who says, 'Well, I know all about Pakistan' and say to them, 'Well, why don't you take care of it?'” Romney said. “If we did that, we'd just hire someone from the state department to run the country.”

And he underscored that note at the close of the session with: “The president is not an expert. The president is a leader who guides America in making the important decisions which must be made to keep us safe.”

Specifically, he was asked if candidates like Giuliani and McCain would be better equipped to handle foreign crises because they have had more experience in the arena and can rule "from their gut." But Romney balked at the suggestion. "Well, anybody who thinks they could rule from the gut,” he said, “and I doubt Sen. McCain would say that, so I'm not gonna assume he would say that, that he could just rule from the gut."

The underlying theme of Romney's reworked message when actually on the stump was, "No one votes for the past," suggesting that he is the GOP candidate of the future. He was joined by his wife, Ann, who made her pitch at the end rather than the beginning for him and his character. Romney also spoke in more detail about his father and explained that he started out poor and worked his way up through the ranks to become a successful businessman and later, a three-term governor.

Romney will return to the state after the Iowa caucuses on the night of the third for three days of rallying his supporters before the Granite State's primary on the 8th.

Go Romney!  If you can survive the onslaught of liberal media attacks, you can survive anything. You definitely have my vote.
Lessons for today:

>It's not enough to just WANT TO BE PRESIDENT.
>It's not enough to LOOK LIKE A PRESIDENT.
>It's not enough to flip flop in order to BE PRESIDENT.

It's just not enough.

Don't blame Massachusetts. We tried to help you.

Sorry.
Sounds like Slick Willard got caught flat-footed to me!
Mitt Romney Flip Flopping again

A photograph of GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney at a 1994 Planned Parenthood fund-raiser has surfaced, once again raising questions about the former Bay State’s governor’s abortion flip-flopping.

The picture, a copy of which was obtained by the Herald, shows Romney and his wife Ann at a house party fund-raiser in Scituate with Nicki Nichols Gamble, who was the president of the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts at the time. Romney has already downplayed ties to Planned Parenthood after revelations that Ann Romney donated $150 to the group.

Gamble said the pic was snapped at an event at GOP activist Eleanor Bleakie’s house and that she “clearly” remembered speaking with Romney at the event. At the time, Romney was running as a pro-choice Republican against U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.).

“My recollection is that we talked about his senate candidacy and the fact that he was supporting Roe v. Wade and a choice agenda at the time,” Gamble told the Herald. “It was a Planned Parenthood event. We were there to discuss our programs and our advocacy.”

The event was held the same day Ann Romney wrote a check to the pro-choice group. Romney has previously said he had “no recollection” of his wife writing the check to Planned Parenthood.

Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom called the flap “a dog bites man story.”

“Governor Romney used to have a different position on abortion,” Fehrnstrom said. “He is now firmly pro-life and has made it clear that as President he will advocate for a culture that welcomes life and protects the sanctity of life. This is the same path that Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush followed.”

Because of his abortion shift, Romney has been branded a flip-flopper by his GOP primary opponents, as well Democrats. Romney has stated he became pro-life in 2004 during the stem cell debate in Massachusetts.

Beyond attending the event, Romney filled out a 2002 questionnaire for the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund in which he said he supported Roe v. Wade, sex education in schools and increased access to emergency contraception.

“With Mitt Romney, this has been more than a flip-flop. This has been an extreme makeover,” said Planned Parenthood spokesman Angus McQuilken. “What voters need to know about Mitt Romney is this: where he stands on any issue is always a moving target.”

Mitt has been "critical of Musharref in the past", but probably won't be next week. (Or maybe tomorrow?) Depends on which way the wind is blowing.
this guy did the customary mitflop thing---he spoke out of both sides of his face.
republicans hate America and the middle class. it is truly a shame when republicans are more willing to help iraqis than middle class Americans. shame on you

romney and the rest of the republican candidates walk in lock step, while the middle class of this nation dies out.

I continued to be amazed at how 30% of Americans can blindly follow such a colossal failure of leadership and imagination. shame on you.
Go Mitt Romney!! You've survived the liberal media to a large extent. You have the skills I want in a president. Go Mitt Romney!!
ROMMNEY AND HILLARY CANNOT BE ELECTED, THEY LIE AND SAY ANYTHING FOR A VOTE, THINKING WE ARE STUPID.
Pat...do you even reralize what a joke MA is to the rest of the nation.

As far as the rest of the nations is concerned...Romney is the only thing you've gotten right in the last fifty years.  Most of that time you were re-electing Senator "Chappaquiddac" and the phony war hero Kerry who couldn't even beat an extremely unpopular incumbent in the middle of an extremely unpopular war.

I'm sorry but MA values are not mainstream American values.

I'm from NH and I plan on voting for Romney in the primary.  I know he will win NH and it will irk the shit out of you moonbats down in shitholeachuseets.  I am going to love every second of it as we elect our first Mormon president.
romney is very much a group player and caucuses with many others and then makes his decisions.  he is decisive, morally strong and capable of dealing with pakistan or any other issue.  if bush could handle all that he was confronted with in his administration, you don''t need a mc cain - you need MITT ROMNEY.
Dave, nice comments. I realize I'm personally responsible for all the ills in MA. I hear about it day in, day out. By the way, Kerry is 1,000 times the man Romney is. You just happen to want to believe the lying swift boaters. Hence, we have GWB as our President. And a war in Iraq where we have seen our young men and women die, while Pakistan falls apart at the seams.

You want Romney as your next President? Good luck.

By the way, because of everyone's hatred for Ted Kennedy, no one paid attention to him when he demanded that we not go to war with Iraq; that there was no evidence they had WMD's. Hatred always wins over common sense. People just love to hate.
Sara, fl - I plan on voting for Romney, but want to take issue with your statement about McCain - we desperately need him.  America needs you John, now more than ever.  Whatever happens in the primaries and after New Hampshire, we need you. No, we don't need aggressive talk against Iran, but we need your conciliatory voice and pragmatic approach.
Jorgensen, you have reared your anti-Romney message again. I've been over many posts covering DNP and GOP candidates, yet the only place I see your posts are on Romney in a slanderous tone. Debating FACTS in CONTEXT must not be your strong suit.

From your own post a Romney spokesperson says:
“Governor Romney used to have a different position on abortion,” Fehrnstrom said. “He is now firmly pro-life and has made it clear that as President he will advocate for a culture that welcomes life and protects the sanctity of life. This is the same path that Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush followed.”

The Romney campaing admits to a changed view. As I stated in an earlier post, Politics is about getting people to change their mind (flip-flop). Polls are conducted which highlight CHANGE (flip-flop). People change. As stated previously, a lot of people choosing ARMs a few years ago would like to change to a Fixed today. Does this make them flip-floppers? Yes. We all flip-flop.

What you and others (caption below) have done is to take a stated change by a candidate and blow it out of proportion to simply slander the candidate. How very unethical.
“With Mitt Romney, this has been more than a flip-flop. This has been an extreme makeover,” said Planned Parenthood spokesman Angus McQuilken. “What voters need to know about Mitt Romney is this: where he stands on any issue is always a moving target.”

For Angus McQuilken to take a stated philosophical change in Romneys campaign, and insuate that Romney is a lier in all things is a huge jump, likely based upon an emotional disagreement of his stance on the issue she/he supports.

I hope all who read these political posts are able to discern between accurate and factual dialogue and the flat out lies you propitiate about candidates.

The next time you post, can you find something about a topic or candidate which you support. Please look to build arguments for someone or something.
I am watching these primaries with great interest, from the UK. One thing that strikes me again and again in these blog discussions is that the anti-Romney messages seem to be driven by labelling and broad-brushed and ill-thought-through knee-jerk comments. On the other hand I see repeatedly cogent, thoughtful and individual observations from his supporters.
This seems indicative of the sort of person Romney attracts, and therefore the sort of person that he likely is.
For the good of the wider world, I hope that those with a vote in this important election use it wisely, and vote for Mitt Romney.
