Obama on Bhutto, Pakistan

Posted: Thursday, December 27, 2007 5:16 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
NEVADA, Iowa -- At a town hall in Nevada, Iowa, Obama expressed his sympathies for Benazir Bhutto’s family and the Pakistani people and noted that he has spoken previously on the problem of extremism there.

"Obviously today we just want to express our sympathies to the Pakistani people and the Bhutto family about the assassination," he said. "I've been saying for some time that we've got a very big problem there."

He elaborated: “Not only do we have a president who has acted in an anti-democratic fashion the past, but we also have the rise of Islamic militants in the northwest provinces that are going back and forth between the borders of Afghanistan and Pakistan.”

Obama added that Al Qaeda now has a base in Pakistan and American intelligence says that the group is stronger there now than they were before 2001.

Tying the problem of Pakistan to the war in Iraq, Obama said, “We were distracted from focusing on them. And they are causing us problems, and they are still plotting to do harm to America. And once we have focused on how to stabilize Iraq and reduce our footprint there -- saying no permanent bases, we are not occupying this country -- we will then be in a position to really take on those who actually killed 3,000 Americans. That's what I intend to do as President of the United States."

In August, Obama’s reference to talking about Pakistan, most probably refers to an August 2007 speech on counterterrorism in which he argued the United States should strike Pakistan unilaterally if they find actionable intelligence about al-Qaeda terrorist camps there and Pakistan fails to act. The speech was criticized by some as overreaching in terms of foreign policy. But Obama frequently cites it now when pointing to the turmoil in Pakistan to say that he was right.

After Obama’s closing argument speech today, his chief media strategist David Axelrod, used the opportunity to criticize Clinton on the same theme, saying that if the United States had not gone to war in Iraq, they would have had more resources to deal with the greater threat in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Not only is Obama an avoider (voting ‘present” instead of a yes or no, or not showing up at all to vote) he is a plagiarist, a political parrot, picking up bits & pieces of what other Democratic candidates have said - which he then writes on index cards to have with him to 'memorize' on the bus– like a good little student. He only started talking about Pakistan after Joe Biden brought it up.

If this election was about choosing the candidate who would be responsible for managing your money (retirement portfolio), would you want a novice or an experienced pro? This is not a race for class president, and there is no fast track to wisdom. Obama is a con-man, clearly out there for his own ego, versus the best interests of America.

Wake up and smell the coffee folks, this is not a popularity contest. We don’t need a Democratic version of a George W, Bush.  The only executive position for Obama at this stage is to be the president of Oprah’s Book Club.

Obama wasn't "scripted and cold." He was mournful. The cadence to his words spoke to the gravity of the situation, and I think he couldn't be more right about Pakistan. The War in Iraq have distracted us from the war on terrorism, namely in Pakistan. Mrs. Clinton voted to authorize the war in Iraq, a vote which she has yet to recant. (I respect John Edwards for that reason).

As far as I'm concerned, Mrs. Clinton is part of the Washington muck that got us into Iraq and distracted us from real foreign policy goals. Vote for vision, vote for either Obama or Edwards.

Jerry Lansing below should not quote the exact words of Tayor Marsh from the Huffington Post without giving proper credit...Plagarize and criticize???
Barack Hussein Obama is needed as president of these United States because having a man who comes from a moderate muslim heritage will make this nation's transition into Islam more palatable and easier than it would otherwise be. Islam is the future and the West must face this fact. I am voting for Barack Hussein Obama, whose name means "Blessed Handsome One", because his youth in Indonesia and the lessons he learned from his muslim father and stepfather will aid him in transitioning America into dhimmihood. What has happened to Bhutto, a great woman, is tragic but these events can be avoided once Barack Hussein Obama is president, and the muslim world sees that America has accepted its destiny, in which case such attacks will be rendered unnecessary. I believe Allah has brought Barack Hussein Obama to us all to save the world.
When are we going to face the truth about Pakistan? Someone (Bhutto), who is not perfect, which none of us are, stands and says the right thing about the crisis in her country is gunned down says to me there is something terrible wrong with our foreign policy which sends billions and billions of dollars to Pakistan to support a dictator who has down nothing about the terrorist in his country and supports the actions of the Talaban. The time is now to support someone who standing up to make a difference in our Country and in the world. Foriegn policy is to help all citizens and not just those in power. Why do you think so many people are rioting after Bhutto's death. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out.
Moronic rednecks will always find ways to critize good judgement. They will belive anything that comes from one of their own (Bush, Limbaugh)as law. Thats why we are where we are today. Mired in debt, stuck in Iraq unable to remove every trace of exttremism from the face of the planet. We need to stop being so biased towards Israel and work to re-eeducate the poor masses in the Middle East
Wow, looks like Obama is really losing it! His ego is getting bigger and bigger, not only he is the messenger of change and holier than thu; he also thinks he really is the most electable one, and now he think he has exp[experience in foreign affairs. What is next?????????? Go figures! His campaign is running out of time...soon his time campaigning will be up in that way he can go back to the Senate and really work since he has only done that the first 2 month before starting running for President. Enough of that nonsense, Mr. Obama is time to go back to earth and work hard you way up, show us all that you really deserve to be the President of this nation.
Jerry you damm wrong about your comments. I want Obama to win this election. Why? Don't you get it!! it is prefereable that somebody from his background from no where to have the chance to be a president of this country. By the way what your level of achievement in life? I don't know but I want your great grand kids who are nothing like me to have this kind of opportunity. If Clinton won another 8 years that will make the total of presidency of two families to 28 years, then Jeff Buch and Chelsea will be ready at that time. That means the oppotunity will only be for who are well to do in the society. This is the only opportunity break this trend of becoming a president.
My example for you is that if you're single married a divorce woman because you need her exprience that throw her out of the wedlock in the first instance and nobody should hire you son after graduation from college because he has no exprience. There is nobody who has a better exprience except God himself who is 100 % perfect.
Abraham Lincoln was a lawyer, and then was elected to the Illinois state legislature.  He then lost an election to be a Senator from Illinois.  He gained national fame while debating the man who beat him for that Senate seat, and two years later won the Republican nomination for President.  Without even ONE year in the Senate.
actually ben mohajerin, he has 2 years experience as a US senator, 7 as an illinois state senator, and many more teaching constitutional law and working as a community organizer in the slums of chicago. oh, and he's on the senate foreign relations committee.
sberman, Axelrod was responding to a question phrased to make the assasination of Bhutto seem to work in her Clinton's favor.  Axelrod, who's heart and soul is with his man, couldn't just let this guy snipe at him when the counter situation was in fact true.

Bhutto's assasination and the turmoil going on over there is directly attributable to our discretionary trillion dollar decimation of Iraq.  The one she authorized.

I don't care if Hillary knew Bhutto and baked cookies with her.  She still voted to authorize the war, she has still marched down the road of military confontation with no diplomacy in sight with Iran, she's not showing good judgement and the experience she is showing tells me she ought not be the democratic nominee for President.
We want our leaders to be wise and courageous. Meanwhile, we need to be diligent and responsible. For example, read and think instead of taking whatever the media throws at us.

I have been following the campaigns closely, including reading the actual statements and speeches made by the candidates. Again and again, Obama showed wisdom, good judgment, and leadership.

Hillary, on the other hand, focuses too much on calculating, polling, and winning for her personal ambition. She can not see the big picture. Maybe she does not want to spend the time (for example, reading the intelligence report before the Iraq vote). Or she does not have the intelligence (for example, she has been fooled by Bush and Bill many times).
Senator Obama has held publicly elected office longer than Clinton or Edwards, and has measurably better judgment and perspective.  This revered world leader corroborated that.

Please educate yourself.
If Hillary is so experienced, why did bill clinton want to keep her record as a first lady a secret?  Show your experiences!
When are we as a country going to understand that what we need is a not the same old crap that we get from our politicians.  Look at what has happened in Pakistan in the last several months:  state of emergency, marshal law, suspension of rights, now an assassination.  The same old lingo just odesn;t work.  We line in a different world.  We need different leadership.  This country needs Obama.  Wake up guys and get behind a true leader, not some scripted professional politician.
It is truly a sad day for Pakistan and the rest of the world.  We (the world) have lost a leader with great vision and unwavering commitment to democracy.  My prayers are with Benazir Bhutto’s family and the Pakistani people.  However, once again we in america seem to be very short sighted.  The initial reaction that is being communicated in the mass media reminds me of Katrina.  Initially it was surprise at the reality of the human suffering hidden in our urban centers.  As time went on, special report after special report focused on what could have been done to prevent the tradgey either by addressing the substandard levies and/or implementing an adequate crisis response plan.   Today’s tradgey in Pakistan has brought to the forefront the result of this administration’s poor foreign policy decisions and the reality of an increase in terrorism.  We stopped paying attention to what was going on in that region of the world and now most of our resources are in Iraq.  Is history going to repeat itself?  I suspect unless America has a change in players with the necessary widsom and judgement to guide us in the right direction, not much will be different now or when the next tradgey strikes.
"It is time to turn the page. When I am President, we will wage the war that has to be won, with a comprehensive strategy with five elements: getting out of Iraq and on to the right battlefield in Afghanistan and Pakistan; developing the capabilities and partnerships we need to take out the terrorists and the world's most deadly weapons; engaging the world to dry up support for terror and extremism; restoring our values; and securing a more resilient homeland.

The first step must be getting off the wrong battlefield in Iraq, and taking the fight to the terrorists in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

As President, I would make the hundreds of millions of dollars in U.S. military aid to Pakistan conditional, and I would make our conditions clear: Pakistan must make substantial progress in closing down the training camps, evicting foreign fighters, and preventing the Taliban from using Pakistan as a staging area for attacks in Afghanistan.

I understand that President Musharraf has his own challenges. But let me make this clear. There are terrorists holed up in those mountains who murdered 3,000 Americans. They are plotting to strike again. It was a terrible mistake to fail to act when we had a chance to take out an al Qaeda leadership meeting in 2005. If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won't act, we will." - Sen. Barack Obama

"the issue that I would like to stress is that Barack Obama also said, if Pakistan won't act. And that's the critical issue, that the government has to act. And the government has to act to protect Pakistan's own serenity and integrity, its own respect, and to understand that if it creates a vacuum, then others aren't going to just twiddle their thumbs while militants freely move across the border." -PM Benazir Bhutto

Experience got us in this war.  Experience gave Bush $555 billion for this war and we still not winning.  Experiences have American paying for high gas prices , job losses, foreclosures and no health care.  But changes is what this country need if we really want to succeed and what we are willing to leave our children for the future.  We need someone whose not afraid to communicate, care about all nationalities and stand firm for what they want for this country.  Wake up People it up to us because with experience we have lately nothing going to change and we have to sit and wait and wonder if they really care about us or the power that will have.  Lets think outside the box......meaning use alot common senses rather than your favorite candidate.

The Federalist enemy known as the Republican Party are using the Federalist Papers and Hobbes law which is disguised as " The Rule of Law " to rule by Sovereign. Alexander Hamilton the author of the Federalist Papers who principled his work on Hobbes Law believed that only the wealthiest and most educated white men should rule in America. If working-class or even middle-class people came to power, greed might corrupt them. Hamilton and the Federalist Party wanted to model themselves after England, both economically and politically. They wanted to become industrialized and to allow only the most educated and wealthy people to rule. The Federalist Society vanished in 1814 immediatly after Britan was defeated in the war of 1812. Guess when they reappeared. 1982

As George Bush says " We should be afraid, we should be very afraid " He neglects to say that he is the one to be afraid of " Now you know why England sticks by us even when were caught lying. Theyr'e gonna make you subservient to them with the help of our own people.
Hill said she knew the lady-I really feel for the ladies family-Being the first lady and having tea with Ms. Bhutto qualifies u for President nowadays. Guess my plumbers wife can fix my leak when he is off having tea. Really what exprience does clinton have. Barack blew this exprience thing long ago when he did not challange it.Hill has done a great job for adopted state. New York is just doing great-LOL.
What exprience does HilLary have. Please someone tell me. If u want her as president that is great.but lets cut the exprience mumbo jumbo out. If barack had been running a good campaign he would have put the exprience card in check a long time ago. I am forced to send my kids to private school my health care is thru the roof and my kid can't get an after school job.Hill has done great for my state.Hill could not keep an eye on bill in the white house-explain to me how is she gonna kept an eye on 300 million americans.I just get tired of pre coronation of ms clinton. Guess it is her birthright to be president. maybe we need we make her queen?
Even Bhutto agreed with Obama;

Bhutto's reaction to Obama's Pakistan policy: "But the issue that I would like to stress is that Barack Obama also said, if Pakistan won't act. And that's the critical issue, that the government has to act. And the government has to act to protect Pakistan's own serenity and integrity, its own respect, and to understand that if it creates a vacuum, then others aren't going to just twiddle their thumbs while militants freely move across the border." -- Benazir Bhutto, August, 2007 ....
Hillary is the most confused candidate on foriegn policy

EVEN BHUTTO AGREED WITH OBAMA;

Question to Jerry; Would you want a cold President than a warm and fuzzy one? Ben, does Obams being a senator for almost 2 years have anything to do with it? Biden, Dodd, McCain etc have in for years and they have not ever gotten close to people voting for them. Get off that kick.
The Iowa people have the priviledge of seeing and listening to all of the candidates running for the US highest office. I listened to Clinton speak last night, the night before Obama was in town...Edwards will be in area this weekend. I have seen Obama twice, Hillary was a first and Edwards I expect to see a second time. My choice for a vote is one of these three, right now I have to go with the most experienced candidate, the World is a mess. You just have to be subjective and not base a choice on personality and hope alone. Whoever wins needs a united support base behind them to change the World.
This is getting ridiculous, this site is regularly taking between 12-20 hours to post my comments. I bet Jerry, Sierra, and Bee never have this problem.

Is it 2008 yet?
All the folks who were critical of Obama's focus on Pakistan earlier this year sure look stupid now.  Obama has been saying for over FIVE years, stop being distracted by Iraq and Iran while our enemies are regrouping in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

What's even more striking is that Bhutto's election platform involved taking a much harder line against the jihadists in the mountains than Musharraf was, which is the same thing Obama was also pushing for.
Barrack Obama is the only guy on the block with his head screwed on right.  The connection between WTC bombing  and Iraq is only in George Bush's imagination.  What a disaster!  The real problem is in Pakistan.  It has always been.  Go Obama!
From George Washington to Georbe W. Bush, this country has been run by white men. All the ails that we suffer came about under their leadership. Isn't It time that we try someone else? A woman? A Black man? Does anyone of sound mind think electing another white man will really improve this country's situation? Let's shatter that glass ceiling. Lets elect both a woman and a black man for the two top positions. This country needs it's allies feeling there will finally be a dramatic change.
This tragedy shouldn't change the debate over who the democratic nominee should be.  To say that Hillary has some unique experience because of her one visit with Bhutto, in her capacity as First Lady, overstates it a bit in my opinion.  You either support the vision and judgment demonstrated by Hillary or the vision and judgment demonstrated by Obama.  And, as it relates to the Middle East specifically, I'm not sure that Hillary can claim any real advantage.  Whatever happens, I'm certainly more comfortable with one of these candidates addressing these issues than Rudy Giuliani, et al.
We needs exprience leader like hillary to
guid our nation thru these difficult times.
No need for some one with ONE YEAR experience as a
senator, even if he talks good.

You are dead wrong.

Obama got it right on Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
You guys that are against this intelligent man with the courage to tell the AMERICAN PEOPLE the truth about what is going on in our government and what is needed to get us on the right track to repair the damamge that has been done to our future.

We need a president with a strong sense of judgement
that knows what the AMERICAN PEOPLE needs.

HRC has no clue as to what the vote that she cast for the war in Iraq & Iran has done, and Bhuto was her friend (LOL), she is not ready to lead us anywhere but to more dividing.

Go OBAMA 08'...........We need you!!!!!
Jerry Lansing Davenport IA

Quite trolling!

I bet you're not even from Iowa either.
Heavy cut and paste today there, Clinton supporters.  Too much for a Friday to post some original thoughts?
That Obama guy is ignorant and dangerous and it was so apparent in his remarks regarding Bhutto   Pat Buchanan yesterday on Hardball called him a "novice just out of the Illinois Senate a year or 2" How true that is.
Senator Clinton received praise and admiration for her response to  Bhutto's assasination.  She was warm, collected and intelligent, Andrea Mitchell from NBC praised her too.  Even Chris Matthews who normally rants and raves like a lunatic seemed sobered up by what happened and realized that Senator Clinton is the person that we can trust in matters such as this.  I am a Democrat but I also thought John McCain seemed wise and trustworthy on this matter.
You people who think Obama is a leader are not wise and I cannot see how anyone could feel that he is ready to lead our country.
Iowans, Please do not vote for him and put our country in jeopardy.  Take a look at Bush and his inexperience and see how he led and, I ask you please do not vote for Barack Obama.
ATTENTION IOWANS!! - PLEASE DO NOT VOTE FOR OBAMA,
HE IS A NOVICE AND NOT READY TO LEAD - PLEASE DO NOT PUT OUR COUNTRY IN JEOPARDY!!!
MOST ANY OTHER DEMOCRAT IS FINE BUT NOT HIM.
To quote Chris Matthews from hardball, a comparison of Binizar Bhutto and Senator Hillary Clinton is to see 2 strong, brave women fighting for the good of their country.  Hillary can lead us through the storms that can and will happen.
VOTE HILLARY ALL THE WAY IN 2008!!!
After months of telling us that Chris Matthews is a lunatic, now he is a genius? lol lol

Senator Obama is saying the same thing now that he was saying in 2002. That's leadership.

A lot of the other candidates have been forced to change their tune based on what is popular at the time - repeatedly. Is that leadership or followership?
Thomas from Little Rock.......Obama has been right about everything he has said regarding Pakistan and Bhutto. What did he say that was ignorant and dangerous? You seem to appreciate Clinton's warm and fuzziness in her comments, how comforting for you. But she hasn't been right about anything.

Many people think Bush has been comforting in times of crisis as well but he has been a disaster in what he has DONE. What will Clinton DO to help make things right in Pakistan?

Obama has more elected experience than Clinton. If experience is what you want then vote for Bidden or Dodd. Otherwise you sound like a little Clinton troll because this argument is irrational when comparing these to candidates.
Obama was right about Pakistan.

Obama's comments regarding terrorism and Pakistan

Do you agree or disagree?
PLEASE IGNORE THE TROLLS SUPPORTING BILLARY!

They're really Republicans.  They know she'll lose the General Election.
Obama's foreign policy reading are really interesting....unilateral strike against Pakistan....
It would be interesting if the US would want to go down that road.
Pakistan is not Iraq, nor afganistan.... it has a professional army and will strike back on its agressor irrespective of who they are...
I respect Obama greatly. I think he has great charisma, and he is very geniune, which unfortunately, Hilary lacks.  But his comment about millitary action in Pakistan makes me cringe. Isn't millitary agression the reason we are in the mess in Iraq in the first place? Why take millitary action against a country that has tried, yes maybe only tried, but still tried to help America all along through this "War on Terror" business. And besides, the turmoil in Pakistan will not be helped by millitary intervention. Actually, Pakistan needs the lack of it.  I think America should fight its own wars, and leave others out of it.  If we want to fight a war on terror, than why should we expect Pakistan to do it for us? Pakistan needs to get a hold of itself, and our continuing interference is just angering its people. Lets get out of Iraq, and put attention on the War on Terror. I wish Obama would profess more diplomacy and less millitary idiocracy.
I agree. What is the use of having years of experience if your judgment is wrong.  Moreover, did Hilary set foreign policy as a First Lady?

Barack was right about Iraq, and spoke up during a time when it was 'unpatriotic' to be against the war in Iraq.  He was right about Pakistan as Bhutto herself remarked. The Taliban and Al-Queda have build a network of supporters in north-west Pakistan since the 80's.  The U.S. took its eye of the ball by invading Iraq to look for so-called WMD.
