Oh-eight (R): Romney vs. McCain

Filed Under:

"The battle between Mitt Romney and John McCain in New Hampshire's Republican primary took a significant turn yesterday as Romney unveiled his first television advertisement attacking McCain's record," the Boston Globe writes. McCain responded with an ad attacking Romney, using the words of two editorials, one of which describes Romney as a "phony."

Romney said this about the McCain ad, per NBC/NJ’s Erin McPike, “It's nasty. It's mean-spirited. Frankly, it tells you more about Sen. McCain than it does about me that he would run an ad like that.”

NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli was with McCain in New Hampshire, and he quotes McCain on the Romney ad exchange: "I was encouraged because it’s clear that Gov. Romney attacks when people are catching up with him. And I understand why he’s talking about the future since he’s spent most of his time running away from his past. But we’ll respond. And we have to respond, and we will respond. But we will conduct this campaign in a dignified manner, on the issues. The people of New Hampshire, I would like to tell Governor Romney, don’t respond favorably to negative ad campaigns. That’s not what the people of New Hampshire want when they choose a leader. And we won’t engage in that kind of campaigning nor will we stoop to responding to a lot of it."

Huckabee also jumped to McCain’s defense, notes NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy. "I'm kind of expecting to be attacked here in Iowa," he said. "We've spent one dollar for every twenty that Mitt Romney has spent in this state …and we're leading. We're ahead. And so when people get that far behind having spent that much money they get desperate… But then I saw the ad that [Romney's] using against Sen. McCain in New Hampshire.”

Huckabee continued, "Now folks, Sen. McCain is -- I guess by many people's standards -- he's a rival. He's a candidate for president in the Republican Party like I am. But as I've said on national television and as I would say on any stage in America regardless of the politics, John McCain is a true, honest to God American hero, and we should respect him and honor him for who he is."

Slate's Dickerson has the scoop that one of the anti-Romney TV ads McCain has at the ready is an ad that was originally put together by two of Romney's current media consultants, Stuart Stevens and Russ Schriefer.

GIULIANI: Some 9/11 family members are not happy with Giuliani's ad, featuring 9/11.

HUCKABEE: The Boston Globe front-pages how Huckabee has raised the ire of the GOP establishment. "Huckabee's surge in recent weeks appears to have stunned and maddened the party's conservative hierarchy. While the GOP establishment hasn't lined up behind any other single candidate, it has steadily raised the volume of its objections to Huckabee as his plausibility as a candidate has grown."

And Huckabee's newest adviser is worried about all the negatives hitting his candidate. "A top Huckabee adviser fretted openly about the possible impact of a weekend of unanswered negative ads aimed at the underfinanced former Arkansas governor and about how the assassination of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto could prompt voters to evaluate candidates' credentials differently than they did a week ago. 'We don't see an erosion yet,' Ed Rollins, a veteran GOP strategist who recently joined Huckabee's campaign, said in a telephone interview. 'But you hope over the course of the next few days they don't start eroding our base.'"

And Rollins didn't rule out a paid response attack on Romney. "'If we think we're starting to bleed, we've got a book of stuff on him," Rollins said of Romney. 'We'll have to do it in person. Either Mike does it or I do it, but it doesn't have the impact of television. If we're really bleeding on Monday, we reserve the right to go back and defend ourselves."

MCCAIN: "I've been declared dead in this campaign on five or six occasions. I won't refer to a recent movie I saw, but I think I am legend," McCain said, according to the AP.

The Concord Monitor (NH), which recently wrote a blistering editorial criticizing Romney, has endorsed McCain. It’s yet another newspaper endorsement for the Arizona senator.

ROMNEY: The Boston Globe devotes the entire right column of its front page to politics, including its top story, " Parenthood clinic funds OK'd under Romney." The article begins, "Former governor Mitt Romney's economic development agency granted initial approval to a tax-exempt bond last year for a Planned Parenthood clinic in Worcester that will provide abortions, just two months before he left office and began highlighting his antiabortion position as a presidential candidate." A Romney spokesman said, "He [Romney] did not know about this loan. It was made by an agency that does not report to the governor. If it did, he would have told them not to do it."

But one Tufts University professor said, "It is unusual that his people at the agency did not find a reason not to fund Planned Parenthood. His administration was clearly focused on his run for the presidency and making sure there was no embarrassment like this. It was an administration that was pretty efficient getting everyone operating on the same page and avoiding scandal."

More bad news for Romney? "A killer accused in the slaying of a newlywed couple in Washington state shortly after he was released from prison in Massachusetts should have been held behind bars for almost a year longer, but the Romney administration failed to file paperwork in time to take away his 'good time' credits," the AP writes.

One of the issues that Romney hasn't had to answer for too much is his lack of foreign policy experience. Well, he addressed that in an avail with reporters yesterday. Romney for the first time used his business background to talk about his international experience, notes NBC/NJ’s Erin McPike. "I’ve done business in 20 different questions around the world before. I have traveled extensively and on the basis of my experience, I believe I have some perspective on issues that relate to our affairs with other nations."

More Romney: "I’m at the same position Ronald Reagan was in. I’m a person who has extensive experience making very difficult decisions, bringing together a great team of people and moving with the kind of leadership skills that allow us to accomplish seemingly impossible tasks. Ronald Reagan did it, I’ve done it throughout my career and I don’t believe for a minute that America wants to have a state department employee type running the country. I think they want a leader. I’m not saying I’m the only leader -- there are others who are great leaders as well in our nation -- I’m not by any means the only. But I do believe that leadership still and the ability to make difficult decisions and experience running things is relevant to becoming president of the United States."

Romney is the only viable candidate. Some Republicans seem to have McCain amnesia. He's a great senator, but he should stay a senator. And the affable Huckabee is running a sophicated smear compaign on Romney's faith. That's worse than an issue ad any day. Romeny is only called phoney because he has shifted to the right, which is exactly what Huckabee and McCain have also done. Besides, we need someone who can run the economy, and Romney is certainly the most qualified!
John McCain wasn't this nation's only P.O.W... My dad was too - but no one is lining up to pat him on the back - AND he doesn't going around flaunting it to try and get votes.
Huckabee and McCain know they are the ones in big trouble and are using the lame excuse that Romney is the one attacking.  Romney is only comparing records and they are ones attacking the person.  McCain has a vindictive spirit and I am coming to think that Huckabee does too.  You just keep watching.  Romney will stay with the issues.
Pastor Huckabee has the foreign policy experience to clean up the mess in Pakistan with one swipe of his mighty arm. For example, Pastor Huckabee punctuated a point about hiring John Bolton as his foreign policy advisor yesterday by discharging his shotgun over the reporters' heads. In the ensuing ruckus, he didn't have time to mention that he is also advised by Kofi Annan, Henry Kissinger, and Mikhail Gorbachev. The other thing that has not been mentioned is an explanation of Pastor Huckabee's comment about Pakistanis entering the US illegally. What Pastor Huckabee probably meant was that rather than coming in from Mexico, the Pakistanis could be smuggled in by cargo containers originating from the so-called geographically shared eastern border with Afghanistan. This would make sense because, as Pastor Huckabee mentioned, martial law is being enforced in Pakistan, so that everyone else must remain inside their homes which would allow terrorism suspects to slip into the containers unnoticed for journey to the US. Yes, Pastor Huckabee apologized for the Pakistani affair because he is a true Christian and that is what Christians do. And because he has a theology degree and as he mentioned that most of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were clergymen, it carries extra weight with Christians, so he was able to raise $89,000 in the one day 'money bomb' on December 27.
I for one am sick of hearing "why I would not be as bad as him". With all this mudslinging negativity between Romney, McCain and Huckabee why do we not hear more about Ron Paul? Is Paul too decent, courteous and positive to garner media attention? In my opinion Ron Paul has acted more presidential than any candidate, and if we could have Paul and Edwards on the same ticket they could return us to constitutional correctness and return Representative loyalty to the rightful constituents (the people)....WISHFUL THINKING
Mitt  Romney is going to single handedly end John Mccain aspirations to be president once and for all on January 8th in NH.

I'm from NH and will be voting for Romney.

Go Mitt!
It is kind of sad to me that you refer to Mike Huckabee as "Pastor Huckabee". He is not my pastor, nor do I want him to be America's Pastor. It disgusts me that he IS religion to persuade voters that they should vote for him because of that. Vote for people that have your same ideals, but don't turn us into a fundamentalist Christian nation that is fighting a crusade holy war.

Thanks.
It is amazing how much panic ONE HONEST MAN (HUCKABEE) can spread among a multitude of hypocrites! Mike was a great leader and Governor and a good and wonderful person. He beat the Clinton machine in Arkansas 3 times. And he can and will do it again. Romney is telling untruths about Mike! You need to check Mike's web page out. He tells it like it is! THE TRUTH! He is for the American people. Because he is one himself. Not the rich and powerful like angered in Arkansas by not being in their pocket. Mike won't play that game of politics.
Romney has the experience to lead expecially in a time when th economy is not so hot.  Huchabee couldn't run a convenient store on the corner.
Classy Sassy, from Arkansas, you speak of Romney's lies.  If your speaking of his commercials on Huckabee, then maybe you should state one lie that he mentioned.  These are contrast ads, not personal attack ads such as Huckabees and Mccains. Quit calling Mitt a liar when you have nothing to back it up.  I've been to Huckabee's website and he can't even prove what Mitt has been saying wrong.
Ron Paul raised 6 million in one day with his money bomb . I guess God and his people like Ron Paul more than Tax hike mike.

"Many people automatically assume that those who disagree with the premises of the LDS Church (Mormonism) are motivated by hatred & are therefore, anti-mormon.  But it is my hope that thoughtful people will look beyond the name-calling to carefully examine the areas of belief that separate the LDS Church from the "Biblical" norm."

I bellieve Mike Huckabee will be a President for ALL people...of every race, nationality & religion !!
It won't be long before Mitt Romney emerges as the only Republican candidate that everyone can get behind, Democrats too.  He has the experience, the leadership qualities, the education, the skills and the brains to fix this country's biggest problems.  We need this good family man to lead this great nation!
Mitt Romney is the clear choice for a delicate America at this time.

Mitt Romney wants to regain strength in America's homes, by strengthening families! How could any one not want that? I will tell you what, if my friend's parents were a bit stronger, then maybe they wouldn't be in and out of jail all the time.
If posting Huckabees' voting record is viewed as being negative information, maybe the Huckster shouldn't have voted that way.  If he is proud of his voting record on immigration and taxes, then the ads are anything but negative.  Just comparisons, so people can know where each candidate stands.

Speaking of negativity, Huckabee, (the former Baptist preacher, for any of you who have missed that pandering), makes negative comments about Mormons constantly through innuendo and sly questions, such as the Jesus/Satan thing.  Then he pretends (remember, he is a former Baptist Preacher, just in case you didn't figure this out the first time I said it) that he knows little about Mormons and their beliefs.  Yes, this is the same Huckabee (the former Baptist Preacher) who went to the Salt Lake City Southern Baptists Convention and preached anti-Mormon garbage there.

Not that religion has anything to do with qualifications for President of the United States, but you would think that Huckabee (you know, . . .The former Baptist Preacher), being all righteous and above all the negativity, would at least let us know what his real qualification are to run the country, balance the budget, end the war, lower taxes, etc.

Hey, lets just all go vote for him because, you know, he is a former Baptist Preacher (Christian and all), just like us!
On C-SPAN tonight covering Iowa town hall events, Gov. Huckabee mentioned the words "Mitt Romney", "dishonest", "desperate" and other personal and deragatory comments about Romney six or seven times. The Gov. from AK never refuted a single fact from Gov. Romney's issue oriented comparison ad. On the other hand, Romney, speaking to a group in an Iowa diner, did not mention Gov. Huckabee even once. Gov. Romney talked about issues and his vision for America. Senator McCain's new ad in N.H. calls Romney a "phony." It's pretty obvious who is doing the juvenile name calling and who is sticking to the issues. Let every intellectually honest voter make the distintion between personal attacks and contrasting records on important issues.
Romney has the proven leadership. He gets things done by building teams of quality people. When the next attack comes on the U.S., Romney will be ready with a plan. He'll have 100's of people like McCain working for him. Romney will make wise decisions, as always, by gathering and analyzing the best data and advise possible.
I think Romney has been very straightforward with his ad campaign.  He has, for a very long time, talked about his credentials.  Now it is time to match his credentials up against the others.  Why does everyone think that it's unethical to compare records?  It's what I would want to know before I voted for someone.  Why should McCain be afraid if what he has supported is what voters don't want?  At least Romney has the decency to attack records instead of waging personal attacks on his opponents.

Also, I do believe Huckabee would be in the third tier of "HONEST MEN" running for president, with some 15 ethics violation accusations, 5 of which resulted in sanctions and thousands of dollars in fines against Huckabee?

And it's not just Romney that's attacking Huckabee - it's harder to find someone who isn't.  Here's a list of almost 60 other prominent conservatives that have been railing Huckabee on his record:

http://iowansforromney.blogspot.com/2007/12/huck-bust-is-coming.html#links

Bottom line - Romney has been the candidate who stands out to me as having been most straightforward on the issues.  He's been above dodging questions about the issues and waging baseless character attacks.
The caucuses in IA and the primaries in NH, MI and SC can't get here fast enough.

The sooner we decent American let it be know that Romney is the one and put an end to all of this Huckabee, Mccain Paul nonsense the sooner we can all get back to our daily lives.
I wonder why nobody has a comment about Senator Duncan Hunter's statement about Mitt Romney's company (Bain Capital, 3Com), and its tie to communist's China's Huawei Technology and the fact that 3Com, a leading technology firm helps the Department of Defense ward off cyber attacks from hostle forces?
Bain Capital now owns Clear Channel Communications, the company that pulls the strings for elite conservative talking heads, hmmmm.
