Edwards picking off voters?

Posted: Saturday, December 29, 2007 1:27 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Tricia Miller
MUSCATINE, Iowa -- One sign of momentum for Edwards five days before the Iowa caucus may be picking off caucus-goers from other campaigns. In a press release preceding the day’s first event, the campaign named 45 Iowans who supported either John Kerry, Howard Dean or Dick Gephardt in the 2004 caucus but plan to caucus for Edwards next week.

Meanwhile, at the event, a Kucinich supporter stood and said that he caucused for Edwards in 2004 after his first choice wasn’t viable. (In January 2004 Edwards and Kucinich each advised their supporters to move to the other’s camp if one of them was not viable.) The questioner said he was considering Edwards again.

“I was proud to caucus for you last time after campaigning my heart out for Dennis Kucinich,” he told Edwards and asked if the candidate would support Kucinich’s proposal for a Cabinet-level Department of Peace.

“Well, I’m not for a Department of Peace, so I’m going to give you an answer you don’t like. I think that -- and it’s a perfectly fine idea. I’m not saying it’s a bad idea. It’s just not what I would do,” he said. “I think the way the president of the United States approaches the rest of the world is more important than any of these bureaucracies, and the engagement and the constructive engagement with the rest of the world in a way that creates peace and security is the most critical element.”

Edwards was introduced at the event by his state co-chair, Roxanne Conlin, a trial lawyer and the first female gubernatorial candidate in Iowa, and by state Rep. Nathan Reichert from Muscatine. Reichert likened the former North Carolina senator’s campaign to a Big Ten football game.

“These folks who are in this room know that John Edwards has run a steady, grinding -- what I would call a good-time, smash mouth Big Ten football campaign. It has been 3 yards and a pile of dust, three yards and a pile of dust, three yards and a pile of dust,” he said. “It’s been Muscatine and West Liberty and Wapello and all those little towns all across Iowa.”

Edwards has three more events today, ending the day with a rally in Des Moines. He was joined in Muscatine by his son Jack and daughter Emma Claire. His wife Elizabeth and older daughter Cate are also traveling Iowa on his behalf today.

good news---looking forward to the edwards'being the first couple.
Among the Dem base, those who favor Kucinich or other small percentage candidates are not at all likely to go to HRC.  They wouldn't be supporting those other candidates if they didn't want an alternative to HRC in the first place.  They will split between Edwards and Obama with Edwards getting the bigger share if progressive talk radio is any indication.
What a ridiculous post. In case you hadn’t noticed, John Kerry, Howard Dean and Dick Gephardt aren’t on the ballot. I’m sure former supporters of those 2004 candidates are supporting Clinton and Obama as well. If Edwards is peeling off people from Clinton and Obama, that’s news. Why in the world would the Edwards campaign issue a press release like this? Silly.

Also, it would be prudent for Kucinich’s supporters to back someone else. This post is hardly newsworthy.
As a man that has worked hard all his life and a proud union man. i just can't understand how anyone that works their back as well as their head could support anyone but John Edwards.
This is just propaganda from someone at MSNBC to recruit 2nd Choice voters.

If you are working for Kucinich, you'll probably already know that Edwards is really nothing like Kucinich. He pretends to protect the people while voting for China Trade, Authoring the Patriot Act, voting for the War - I don't understand why a one-term senator of no reknown over his tenure is somehow a leader for our country.

What?? This is an absurd post. Sorry, guys, but I just don't get this one.
Please people, vote for DENNIS KUCINICH - www.kucinich.us
Edwards IS picking off voters from Obama and Clinton: this was documented by Ron Brownstein of the LA Times. Edwards is gaining with non-college females, and college males, Clinton's and Obama's strongholds respectively.

This means Edwards is going to win Iowa.

Edwards is The Man!
Former supporters take aim at Edwards
by Christi Parsons 12/28/07

Democrat John Edwards has been critical of the involvement of outside organizations that spend money to influence voters.

But some former supporters are questioning how committed Edwards is to that idea, as union leaders who support him are now doing exactly that on his behalf.

"He said he would change Washington, and we believed him," says a new letter from some 2004 Edwards supporters. "Times have changed, and so has John Edwards."

But Edwards has said that, while he wishes the outside groups wouldn't run those ads, he can't control what an independent organization chooses to do.

And officials of the Service Employees International Union today spoke out in defense of their Alliance for a New America, which they set up to advocate for union issues.

The alliance "enables working people to pool their resources to gain a voice on the key issues facing America as the country heads into the 2008 elections," Dave Regan, SEIU District 1199 president, said in a written statement today.

The letter writers are behind Democrat Barack Obama this time around, and it was Obama's campaign that released their letter today.

"(T)his time, we support Barack Obama for President," the letter says. "He is the ONLY candidate in this race who’s not getting any help in Iowa from Washington lobbyists, special interest PACs, or the Washington-based organizations known as 527s. We can trust Barack Obama to change Washington , to tell us the truth, and most importantly – to win in 2008."

The writers signed their names this way:

Frank Best, Columbus City, former Louisa County Edwards Chair

Thom Determan, Dubuque, precinct captain for Edwards in 2004.

Katie Determan, Dubuque, precinct captain for Edwards in 2004.

Judy Jones, Ames

James Cox, Cedar Rapids

Eileen Lundberg, Runnells

Dan Lundberg, Runnells

Ryan Sewell, Council Bluffs

People who don't support him, don't because he's a fraud. Plain and simple. Yeah, there are 2 America's. The one John lives in, and the one he campaigns in. He still suports bid business, with his 54 million in big business investments. Look at his 46 page financial report to the FEC if you doubt it.

Man this is dumb. Edward can't raise cash because he is only running in one state. But his wealthy lawyer friends are funding his 527 in Iowa to attack Barrack. His former friend gave $495,000 to the 527 and it is managed by Edward's 2004 campaign manager.

How phony can this guy get?

Even the Grinch is voting for Barack Obama.
OK, the Grinch's animator.  Meet Tom Ray!
Tom was one of the five animators who created "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" back in 1966 (which was incidentally a favorite of Senator Obama's as a kid.)  In addition to the Grinch, we can also thank Tom for being part of the team that brought us Daffy Duck, Tom & Jerry, Yogi Bear, and a smart-aleck, Brooklyn-type rabbit known to most of us by the name of Bugs.

where is obama getting his money from?
"As a man that has worked hard all his life and a proud union man. i just can't understand how anyone that works their back as well as their head could support anyone but John Edwards"

You're absolutely right, Sam Hubbard.  But then why did I see so many Bush/Cheney signs in the front yards of tiny ranch homes with beat up pick-ups out front in 2004?  What do people like that think Republicans have ever done for them?

Only in America can workers be convinced that the party of the corporate elite is on their side and that the unions that created the broadest most prosperous middle class society in the world are the enemy.  Reagan was the master at pushing this crap and it's been down hill for working people ever since.

As far as Edwards being rich, they're all rich.  He's the only one who comes from working class roots and still probably knows and is related to working class people.  And he went to bat with the big corporations for ordinary people who were getting screwed.

Yeah, he got rich doing it.  Isn't that the American dream?  Go to college, become a professional, move up as far as you can in the world?  He did it under his own power, after all.   But the same people pointing at him as a hypocrite were happy to buy all the garbage about blue-blood GW Bush, born into a family that has been part of our wealth and power aristocracy for generations, being just an ordinary guy you could hang out with.  He grew up hanging out with Saudi princes for God's sake.

Let's just take it as a given that presidential candidates aren't the guy next door and consider who is more likely to know something about what life is like for the other 99% and is most inclined to want do something for us.
Edwards is an ambulance chasing charlatan.
If John Edwards had any sense, he would have said, "I'm proposing a CABINET-LEVEL POSITION ON GLOBAL POVERTY, which is similar."

Poverty plays a role in conflicts, here at home and abroad.  The cabinet-level position on global poverty that John Edwards has proposed could be a "QUASI"-global peace position.

That's what I would have said, and I have sense.
I live in North Carolina. John Edwards did not seek  re-election to the Senate here after his first term because he knew he couldn't win. He didn't carry this state for Kerry as the VP candidate. He is not liked here by many on both sides of the aisle. He is perceived as an opportunist and a phony. His 28,000 sq. ft. house and $400 haircut shows, if nothing else, that he has no idea of how important perceptions are. If he is the Democrats' nominee, the Republicans will eat him alive. I'm an undecided Republican, leaning towards either McCain or Giuliani, but I believe that Edwards would be the easiest person for us Republicans to run against based on his track record here in NC.
First Read, I have a question. How do you decide in what order these posts appear? I assumed it was by the time posted, but I have noticed two different forums where hours after a post has appeared, suddenly some other posts show up as if they were posted BEFORE the ones who were there first! This is one of those. For several hours, the post by Ava was the lead-off post. Now, suddenly, there are two posts which show up ahead of Ava's post! How could this happen, First Read? Is someone there making up posts and inserting them? Or is it creative editing? Very, very strange!
It was nice to see that Edwards would not pander just to get a vote. He knew what the Kucinich supporter wanted to hear but he gave him an honest answer. I wish more candidates would do that.

Instead we have seen other candidates practially channel Edwards campaign in the last few weeks hoping that copying Edwards message would get them more votes. In reality I bet those candidates lost more votes than they gained.

This example about the Kucinich supporter is just another reason among many to support Edwards. He will tell you the truth even if it might cost him your vote. Bravo Edwards!
John Edwards is a phony.

John Edwards Feeling Pretty.
Man.  You Edwards haters are a pathetic lot.

Sorry that your candidates are inferior copycats, but hey, I suppose you've gotta tell yourself SOMETHING to rationalize your promotion of inferiority.

Oh, btw...Edwards totally punked your candidates on Pakistan.  PWN3D.

He may or may not win the presidency, but at least you know where he stands.  As do the other candidates, as they scramble to copy him.
Wow! I had to see it to believe it. It really is the Obama people doing all the mean & nasty and untrue comments about Edwards. I'm surprised,,, such things happen in a close race, I guess. I'll take facts and truth over that stuff any day. It's Edwards for me!
John Edwards does not take money from lobbyiest, and he didn't when he ran in 2004. Why don't you people supporting the straw man media created Obama, look at who is supporting Obama, and who is getting the biggest amount of money from, corportions, Wall Street, Insurance Companies, and he did take money from lobbyest in former elections.  He didn't need any money from them running for President, because Hollywood/TV also were investing tons of money into his campaign, because they know a republican candidate can beat him for the obvious reasons, sorry, but skin color still plays a big part in American voters lives.  Stop living in a fantasy
and wake up and realize what your ancestors have done to the black man in this country.  Obama is a product of affirmative action, and white people think by voting for black man will erase the sins of the past, well it doesn't.  Obama is not qualified to be the President of the US, period. Oh, yes Obama is a corporate elist and does not support the unions.

Emily, speak for yourself.  John Edwards is a brother from North Carolina who speaks for me as well as the thousands and thousands who watched their jobs leave our state to China and wherever else because of Hillary's husband's NAFTA escapade.  Remember Ross Perot's "giant sucking sound"?  That is coincidentally not simply the sound of jobs leaving the USA because of global trade, but the sound of your shrill banshee wail.   We NC Edwards supporters are looking forward to teaching you a lesson in humility.

JOHN EDWARDS FOR PRESIDENT !!!! !!!!

"Poverty plays a role in conflicts, here at home and abroad.  The cabinet-level position on global poverty that John Edwards has proposed could be a "QUASI"-global peace position."

John Edwards has been very clear and very vocal about the fact that gobal poverty is a key causal agent leading to violence and terrorism. He has laid out very specific plans to address this. He "gets" it just as Kucinich does, and will work as hard as anyone to solve the root problems behind global conflict. Unlike others who merely want to put a band-aid on the symptoms. Just because he is not supportive of a Department of Peace does not mean he won't address the issues that can lead to world peace.

As far as slams against him because he's rich, first, he's not as rich as some of the others, and doesn't own as many homes as some. But those are extraneous issues. Nobody, unfortunately, can run for president in this country unless they are rich. I guess people want a rich president who doesn't give a damn about them, rather than a rich president who does, right? John Edwards has not forgotten from whence he came; he wants ALL Americans to have the same chance at success that he had, but he understands, unlike most of the candidates, that, today, the barriers to success are insurmountable for most of the middle class. The middle class and working poor cannot get "ahead" due to corporate greed. E.g., you get a 3% raise at max, yet your health insurance premiums, co-pays, gasoline and overall COL go up more, so you're losing money after doing a fabulous job. Since when did 3% get to be a "generous" raise? Yet that is what most working-class folks get after busting their humps day after day for a company whose CEO makes millions. John Edwards sees this, and knows it's not right.

As far as the 527 nonsense, this is a union group that's supporting Edwards. Hardly the special interests and lobbyists that Edwards is against. And Obama's a crybaby about this--both he & Clinton accept gobs of Wall Street money for their campaigns and have outspent Edwards by millions. This 527 support doesn't even begin to even the playing field.

John Edwards was NOT an ambulance chaser; he represented "regular" people who had been egregiously injured by clearly negligent acts of corporations, doctors, hospitals. Believe it or not, those people DO screw up, and screw up badly. When people die or are severely injured as a result, those responsible must be held to account.
I wish people would stop flat out lying in these posts. Edwards has been drawing large crowds in Iowa, 1100 in Des Moines last night, and has been outdrawing both Obama & Hillary in recent days. If you're going to post negative things, at least make sure they are true, for God's sake!
Funny comments to an odd story.  I understand that MSNBC doesn't want to cover anything of substance in the Dem nomination process...that the readers seem as easily distracted shouldn't surprise me.

John Edwards has been leading on the issues all along.  He's pushed both Obama and Clinton to the left on Health Care and Trade.  The press release counters the idea that the only support JRE has in Iowa are those people who caucused for him in 2004... a popular theme of "news" reports.

And that list of former Edwards supporters who now support Obama...you should check the date on their supporter cards...I know for certain that at least one didn't make the decision based on 527s, cause they've been Obama since before the Harkin Steak Fry.

At least the "special interest" groups supporting Edwards are those that represent workers.  Explain the over 50% support of Obama by businesses like Goldman Sachs...you know, the financial giant that lobbies to privatize Social Security.

Vote Edwards.
I am the Kucinich supporter who asked Edwards about Department of Peace yesterday in Muscatine. I'd asked Obama the same question the night before, just as I've asked Biden and Richardson and Mrs. Dodd. All give decent answers, but fall far short of Dennis' assertion that he would reject war as an instrument of policy. Too bad he's not really in the race this time, at least not in Iowa. I doubt I'll make my choice before Thursday.
here is one for you.

JOHN EDWARDS WAS ON THE SENATE INTELIGENCE COMMITTE AND KNEW THAT THE EVIDENCE OF WEAPONDS OF MASS DESTRUCTION WERE QUESTIONABLE, YET SAID NOTHING AND VOTED FOR THE WAR.

now he says "i was wrong," but he knew he was one of the few senators who knew he was wrong all along but stabbed us in the back and became Bush's democrat spokesperson.

VOTE KUCINICH!
Um, vote Biden.
I am a Dennis Kucinich supporter and I am so grateful for Daniel Clark's question.  I am not at all satisfied with Edwards answer, and if I was in Iowa I would still caucus for Kucinich.  I have family in NH and I am begging them to give peace and Kucinich a chance.  Now is the time to vote for your true ideals; later we can deal with who is actually nominated.  I know for certain that Dennis has helped John Edwards fashion some of his stands; he is not at all wise in not supporting peace.  John is a good man but I can support no one but Dennis now.  This man has integrity and courage and he reads the bills presented to him.  It appears no one else does.  NO ONE!  He is the answer to my prayers for America!  www.dennis4president.com
the obama spin control is still out on the prowl, i can see, from these comments.  i do like the new script you are using.  i especially love how you pretend to be republicans and attack edwards on the haircut--maybe you're just a bit jealous cuz his hair is just that nice.

or maybe you're worried someone might actually DO something about poverty in our country?

there were quite a few defectors from obama's camp into edwards too, once they found out he also has a 527 group working for him in california.

of course, i found most interesting, obama's got corporate lobbyists on his payroll to his campaign. so you're not in the pocket of special interests, barack?  i think not.

oh, and you probably spent so much time on these comments, you didn't see edwards with a crowd of 1100 at a high school in iowa this weekend.  he's only gaining momentum, and his message is getting thru.

i support edwards for president.  if you want the truth and more real info on edwards and where he stands on the issues, do not look at these comments, go to johnedwards.com.  check out his issues pages.

and barack, i'd be careful not to sling mud in glass houses.  it ain't pretty.  and it will not get you votes.  it only makes us like edwards even more.
Dennis Kucinich is a viable, electable candidate. Period.  If we are talking about campaign financing, solid positions, genuine concern and solutions to our largest problems, etc, than Kucinich is the only person I can support.  If we believe, as the media tells us we do, that Kucinich is unelectable, than we have given up on ourselves.  It is too early to do that, and our future is far too important.

Edwards and Obama have good qualities, of course, but why take the bad with good?  Why settle?  All it takes is your vote.  Gobs of money, slick haircuts and proclaiming a concern for the poor are all fine and dandy, but we as a nation need to be better than that.

Kucinich is not mega wealthy. The media wrote him off before he entered the race. Why would we let the same media who doesn't bat an eye at real news tell us who is electable?  If you care about real solutions to obvious problems, than I urge you to vote your conscience and not try to play politics.  Think about where your information is coming from, then vote.

I am proudly voting Kucinich on Feb 5th. An electorate that has given up on itself has no power to change anything.
I'm a Kucinich supporter. I don't think Edwards response really said anything, because if you actually look at the proposed legislation, two-thirds of it (especially financial) deal with reduction of violence WITHIN our own country, and only one-third of this proposed department would deal with foreign policy. I don't believe he has any real understanding of the legislation, HR 808 if you also need to know.
