Oh-eight (R): Huck on the ropes?

GIULIANI: The former New York mayor appears to be moving on from Iowa. "Aides said the ex-mayor won't even return to Iowa for the caucus results," the New York Daily News writes. "While Giuliani's 20 stops in the state since the campaign began may seem like a lot, some Iowans said they didn't see enough of him to take his measure."

HUCKABEE: The Politico’s Martin writes, “Since becoming the Iowa frontrunner, Mike Huckabee has been subjected to a month-long siege of media scrutiny and mostly unanswered attacks from his top rival - an onslaught that any presidential hopeful would be hard-pressed to survive… Huckabee’s slide can be explained by a series of inter-related factors. His rise came right as the media began to closely cover the campaign, he and his undermanned campaign organization have been ill-prepared to push back against broadsides from both the press and Romney and his positions and rhetoric have drawn the enmity of a constellation of groups within the conservative establishment.”

When he's asked about the biting attack ads being slung at him by rival Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee likes to laugh off the tough talk, NBC/NJ’s Carrie Dann reports. But a new mailer going out to Iowa Republicans makes it clear that he's playing serious defense. In fact, some might say that he sounds like a man on the ropes.

"He faced each decision with integrity," reads the lettering at the top of the 5.5" by 11" flyer. "Mike Huckabee doesn't base decisions on politics or polling." Here's the remarkable line: "While there may be some decisions he would change in hindsight, the fact remains that he made these tough decisions with the most current information available, and based on what he believed was best for his state and the nation."

The mailer features a list of the "tough decisions" Huckabee made as governor, including his turning down of 7,600 clemency requests and carrying out of 16 executions. “While some try to distort Governor Huckabee's record for political gain, Arkansas voters rewarded his consistent leadership and success by re-electing him - twice."

Huckabee's Amway connection? The Chicago Tribune: "Quixtar is a sibling of controversial multilevel marketing giant Amway, whose founders and owners have a long history of backing Christian causes and conservative Republicans. According to Huckabee's public schedule, Quixtar hosted the event. 'We found out later from a friend it was some kind of Internet marketing thing,' said Bill Evanich, an avid Huckabee fan who attended the evening at a hotel conference room late last week. 'I thought it was political, and that we'd get to ask questions.'

"On Saturday, Huckabee, who has been a paid motivational speaker in the past, said he was not compensated for appearing at the event, though he jokingly said, 'I wish I had been.' He said he knew some in the audience 'were part of that network' but that he had no association with Quixtar. Quixtar's blend of Christianity, conservatism and consumerism could be helpful to Huckabee, a Baptist minister, as he seeks the backing of evangelicals in his bid to win the Iowa Republican caucuses Thursday night.

NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy spoke with Patrick Davis, who is running the pro-Huck Common Sense Issues/Trust Huckabee group, and Davis talked about the polling and the ad. It’s a  $50,000 Iowa cable TV buy for the 29th through the 1st, and will be extended if money is there. It will be airing on Fox News across all cable systems. They have spent 70,000 so far on behalf of Huck, and they are back on the phones making "educational" calls in Iowa until the caucuses.

MCCAIN: The Los Angeles Times looks at McCain's struggle to woo indie voters in New Hampshire away from Obama. Maybe it's why in recent days, McCain's reminded folks of what he believes is Obama's chief weakness: inexperience.

ROMNEY: "To win the White House, you can't just win one state," Romney said. "You have to win these purple states, like Iowa and New Hampshire. And I'm going to fight in Missouri, and Michigan, and South Carolina, and Florida, and California. I'm going to be all around the country making sure that if I get this nomination, I'm not just a one-hit wonder."

THOMPSON: For any other candidate, this might be a good headline. But for Thompson, who has been battling a perception that he's not that interested in running, having an AP story noting that he doesn't have a burning desire to be president is not a good thing. Iowans, in particular, award the ambitious.

I guess the the "loaves and fishes" miracle for Huckabee has suddenly spoiled? If it was a "God thing" does that mean Our Lord is displeased with him and favors Mormonism? I'm confused because that is what the Huckster has been telling me.
Huckabee wasn't re-elected in Arkansas for being a conservative his views and record show a very liberal person regarding criminals, taxes, and illegal immigrants. Lets remember Arkansas is Clinton country.

Romney on the other hand has shown social views that have been liberal, but his record has shown otherwise.

Romney is the only candidate who could truly fix our economy and eliminate our trade deficit with China...one of the biggest threats this country is facing.
Seals can you read, Huckabee was never defeated, and to the rest of you clinton athesists, Huckabee will blow your devils away
Tim Russert went very easy on Pastor Huckabee on Meet the Press today. This proves that Pastor Huckabee is the choice of g-d. Pastor Huckabee has the foreign policy experience to clean up the mess in Pakistan and elsewhere with one swipe of his mighty arm. For example, Pastor Huckabee punctuated a point about having John Bolton as his foreign policy advisor the other day by discharging his shotgun over the reporters' heads, because he's a tough law-and-order man. In the ensuing melee, he didn't have time to mention that he is also advised by Kofi Annan, Henry Kissinger, and Mikhail Gorbachev. The other thing that has not been mentioned is an explanation of Pastor Huckabee's comment about Pakistanis entering the US illegally. What Pastor Huckabee probably meant was that rather than coming in from Mexico, the Pakistanis are smuggled in by cargo containers originating from the so-called geographically shared eastern border with Afghanistan. This would make sense because, as Pastor Huckabee mentioned, martial law is being enforced in Pakistan, so that everyone else must remain inside their homes which would allow terrorism suspects to slip into the containers unnoticed for transport to the US. Yes, Pastor Huckabee apologized for the Pakistani affair, but he did that because he is a true Christian and that is what Christians do. And since he has a theology degree and as he mentioned, most of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were clergymen, it carries extra weight with Christians, so he was able to raise $89,000 in the one day 'money bomb' on December 27. Pastor Huckabee also knows that we must protect Israel at all costs for it is in the Bible. He has the power of a multinational corporation, Amway, at his disposal to bring the countries who won't get in line on terrorism to their knees. Oh, how happy everyone will be when Pastor Huckabee is president and puts the Christ back into Christians!
As soon as voters find out Huckabee was pen palls with convicted rapist Wayne Dumond, it's going to be over.

"Dear Wayne. . . . My desire is that you be released from prison," the governor wrote. "I feel now that parole is the best way. . . ."

Dumond then went out and killed and raped two more woman a year after Huckabee set him free.
Amway? Really?? That's a scary thought. To think that our democracy is little more than an elaborate pyramid scheme... tsk, tsk. I guess this explains Hucksterabee's appeal.
Yeah John don't you think being castrated with fishng line by masked Clinton cronies and his testicles put on display by a Clinton sheriff was really called for.  Also new evidence came up and the parole board, not Huckabee released DuMond, so get it straight or shut up.
Larry Seals from Denver,
Which Romney's position are you refering to? the one he had yesterday, the one he is standing on now or the one he will have tomorrow?

Two quick points: First, after Huck's appearance on Meet the Press, I have to wonder what happened to his "high road" and commitment to clean politics.

Second, I sincerely hope that this is the end of Huckabee. He is a joke. Huckabee defenders on this thread would do well to understand that telling people to "get the facts straight or shut up" will not win converts over to your cause.

Huck, it's over. Pay your quarter and get off the ride.
People...why are all of you MAD about a group of business owners asking Huckabee to come and talk? It was not an AMWAY event, it was an Iowa business group. Why are so many people so STUPID about what really goes on. The article talked about "controversial" company AMWAY. There is NOTHING WRONG WITH THE COMPANY, they sell products, people buy products, people sell products. If it was MARY KAY that brought Huckabee into talk would it be the "CONTROVERSIAL" makeup company or maybe...let's say PETA brought them in...would it be the controversial group PETA...would that mean that Huckabee doesn't wear fur and is a vegan? NO..it also does not mean he BUYS AMWAY PRODUCTS. I AM REALLY OVER YOU "American people" that get your thought process from DATELINE!
I did the whole Amway/Quixtar thing for a year with my wife.  One day I woke up and realized how manipulative it was.  They glorify of materialism, greed and conspicuous consumption wrapped in the mantle of Christian ethics and marriage counseling to recruit and motivate.   Do you remember Calvin--he taught that evidence of God's favor was to be found by whether or not he made you wealthy.  Amway uses modern day Calvinism.  Every person they use as an example of a top seller/recruiter takes a picture in front of their mansion with high priced cars and boats in the background.  It is the most brazen hijacking of Christian values I have ever witnessed.  I would rather donate to a preacher and have him drive a Mercedes that get duped by these multilevel marketers of "freedom."  Freedom comes by living God's word.  If I had a whip I would overturned these moneychangers tables.  The fact that Huckabee associates with such snake oil salesman is not surprising.  Huckabee has been classified by Christian commentators as part of the "prosperity preachers" that commanded followers to pay a 10% tithe of all their increase so they could drive a nicer car and live in a bigger house and get a more lucrative TV deal.  Please America, don't elect this guy.
God is great! kaboom!
