Obama contrasts himself with Romney

Posted: Sunday, December 30, 2007 6:39 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
KNOXVILLE, IA -- Obama loves his Republicans. He makes an open pitch for GOP voters in his stump speeches, even as he calls them out in his stump speeches, saying he can beat Mitt and Rudy and Huckabee. At a town hall in Knoxville today, he threw in Ron Paul. "They don't poll Ron Paul, but I can beat him too."

But there's one Republican whom he seems to have a little more affection for than most. Obama frequently makes fun of Romney on the stump, joking about illegal aliens working on his Romney's yard. And today, he was given permission by a Republican deciding between Obama and Romney to draw some "contrasts."

"Mitt Romney is a very handsome guy. He's taller than me. I was listening to an interview this morning and somebody asked him if he's ever cursed. He said of course, but not the real harsh ones. I have to tell you -- I've used the harsh ones, the really juicy ones," Obama told the crowd, laughing.

He went on to contrast himself with all the Republicans in the field, saying he believes in fiscal restraint "unlike the  Republican orthodoxy."

Obama was introduced by Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND), who told the crowd that Obama could win voters in states as red as his.

The event was largely similar to the packed town halls that Obama has had over the past few weeks, giving his re-tooled stump speech and taking around four questions.

Obama did throw in an extra line to the Bill Clinton quote he's been using frequently on the trail, saying "There's a right kind of experience and a wrong kind of experience..."

Telling the crowd who gave the quote, he answered, "A guy named Bill Clinton, who now talks about the roll of the dice. You know Bill Clinton was right then, and I'm right now."

In an interview with Radio Iowa's Kay Henderson after the event, Obama said that when he talks about "risks" and "gambles" and "stakes" in his stump speeches, he is referring to Clinton's comments on Charlie Rose, in which the former president said that voting for Obama would be a risk akin to "rolling the dice."

"I mean President Clinton argues that it would somehow be  risky to elect me. This is a theme that ironically George H.W. Bush used against Bill Clinton back in 1992," Obama said.

Joe, that is not correct. I am a registered R whose has voted in past primaries. Ron Paul is my choice. When polled I had to choose 'other'. The recorded voice then told me my number would be removed from the calling list.

Our democracy is a sham
Obooba could probley beat Mr. Paul if he used both hands and a quart of K.Y. of course he would need help to hold him down...
Yes..We want the truth even when we can't stand! Just give it to us.....Obama 08.
Obama makes the other candidates look bad. He is soft spoken but firm and strong. He means what he says and never underestimates his opponents. I'm sure that would apply to Bin Laden as well as Hillary or Romney.  His sense of humor deftly diffuses a lot of conflict. I feel confident that America will be in great hands with Obama.
Obama is the candidate we need today.  If he can beat the corrupt HRC machine in the primaries, he will coast to the presidency.  And this is a Republican talking.
Why we should vote a Dem into the Oval-Office.
-To finally end this great long lasting economy.
-To change tax paying employees into unemployment
   collectors.
-Put a stop to building new power plants, refineries
why would we want to be energy self-reliant.
-Sell missile technology to China for election fund
donations, oh wait, Billary already did that.
-Raise taxes so we have more money to spend on pork.
-And to top it all off, we can cut our military and
prepare to obey the muslims sharia law.

Oh I am impressed. Obama has dropped Fbombs.  That really humanizes him and qualifies him to be the leader of the free world. We have never had such an unqualified candidate in years.  And is Obama ready to state he has never had a contractor employ illegal aliens at his residence?  Has he never had an illegal change his linens at his hotel?  Well, I guess Obama gets a pass.  (EVERUONE got one.  ONLY Romney had the media stake out his home for nearly a year.  The media corps does not stake out Obama's home and follow every worker home so they can interrogate them as to citizenship.  I guess they think he goes home to do his housework.  When the press corps does that for eight months, giving Obama the same scrutiny they gave Romney I will laugh at his yardwork jokes about Romney.
Ron Paul, can win the presidency. Contrary to the pundits and media propaganda, Ron Paul is best positioned to win the GOP nomination.

Ron Paul has more money than his opponents and is just starting to gain momentum. As a result of massive popular support Paul’s donor base is huge and donors are not close to reaching contribution limits. Paul’s opponents are going broke and their donors are maxed out. Ron Paul may raise 20 million this quarter and chances are he’ll raise more the next quarter.

To get an idea of how strong Paul’s support is consider this. Ron Paul received donations from over 123,000 people this quarter. If one out of 100 voters donate to a presidential candidate that means Paul has the support of over 12 million primary voters. My guess is that less than 1 out of 100 voters donate in a primary.

Of Paul’s opponents, John McCain and Mike Huckabee are broke and don’t have the funds to compete on Super Tuesday. Both candidates appear to be media creations in this election and don’t have that much popular support. If it weren’t for undeserved free media they wouldn’t be on the radar screens.

Giuliani was forced to go with his big state strategy because he ran the risk of getting creamed in early primaries. He appears to be a lead balloon and runs the risk of losing some of those big states to Paul. Thompson just hasn’t taken off. There is a chance he could get revived in South Carolina but he may not make it that far.

Romney is self financing his campaign and can go the distance, but how much of his personal wealth is he willing to squander?

Recent commentaries and political talk have mentioned the possibility of a brokered convention. This is an early admission by pundits that Ron Paul can’t be stopped, and a hope that he won’t have 50% of the delegates allowing his opponents to broker a deal to deny him the nomination.

Paul is unique among GOP candidates because his support is national. He can compete in every state.

The primary calendar has been frontloaded which was deliberate to keep second tier candidates (candidates not bought and paid for) from having a shot at winning the nomination. It is doubtful that when planning the schedules anybody had a clue that Ron Paul would be one of the only candidate that could be competitive on February 5th

Iowa, Wyoming, New Hampshire, Michigan, Nevada, South Carolina, Florida, Maine are all up for grabs prior to Super Tuesday which is on February 5th. Given the low expectations Paul only needs to win one of these to show that he can win prior to Super Tuesday.

The Iowa caucus on January 3rd will be a tough start for Paul. He hasn’t spent that much time in Iowa and may not have the organization that Romney does to win the caucus. Placing in the top five is all that is needed there. A third place would be huge.

Two days later on January 5th is the Wyoming Caucus. This state is a neighbor of Utah and Romney may have a strong organization here as well. Paul may do well here though.

January 8th in New Hampshire is where the campaign really starts for Ron Paul. He doesn’t need to win it but he probably will. Buchanan won this state in 1996 running on similar campaign themes with 27% of the vote. Paul’s support is much broader.

Paul’s odds look good for Michigan on January 15th. The state is a foreclosure war zone and Paul’s blaming of the Federal Reserve for creating a housing crash may resonate well.

January 19th Nevada and South Carolina are up for elections. Paul should win Nevada and has an outside shot at South Carolina.

On January 29th Florida is up. This is the state where Giuliani has circled his wagons. If he’s still in the race it will be an uphill battle for him especially if Paul has momentum generated by a couple victories. There is evidence of Paul support in Florida on the ground just by observing bumper stickers and yard signs on residences but Giuliani also has some visible support.

Of course, if Paul wins New Hampshire the momentum generated from that victory is likely to steam roll his campaign through all of the above mentioned states setting him up for the knock out punch on Super Tuesday.

If Ron Paul doesn’t have the nomination sewed up on Super Tuesday, Paul’s delegate rich home state of Texas will be the final nail in the coffin come March.

The point is it is already too late to stop Paul. He’s going to win the Republican nomination.

As a general election candidate Ron Paul will win a 50 state landslide against any Democratic nominee.

Ron Paul’s opposition to the war in Iraq, and defense of the Bill of Rights, and Civil Liberties, may actually dig deeply into the Democratic vote and overwhelmingly attract independents to his campaign.

His support for secure borders as an integral part of national defense is also a very popular issue that transcends parties.

If Ron Paul is the GOP nominee it won’t matter if Bloomberg or anybody else runs as a third party candidate. Once people go to Paul’s website and review his issues and record they either reject Paul’s ideas or they are sold. Paul will not lose any supporters to another candidate once they are in his camp.

Unlike media propaganda, the ideals of peace, freedom, and prosperity, are very mainstream. To the aging baby boomer population now on fixed incomes, Ron Paul’s challenging of the Federal Reserve’s ‘Inflation Tax’ is most welcomed. To the rest of America feeling the double whammy of an ‘Inflation Tax’ and progressive federal income taxes, Paul’s calls to end the income tax are a cause for celebration.

In fact, Paul’s calls for reforming the monetary system, the income tax, foreign policy, and protecting the Constitution, are a lot more mainstream than pre-emptive nuclear war, no borders, and a police state are.

Those media generated polls are as valuable as the media propaganda that pushed the nation to war in Iraq. People should have as much faith in polls as they do the Easter Bunny and computerized voting. Ron Paul is going to win by a landslide
I watched all the dems this weekend why is it when asked about the illegal immigrant issue they all look like they just droped the keys to the white house in a running wood shredder, and know that sooner or later they are going to have to put their hand in, a few million of us conservative and independent dems want some answers, the old lock step party loyal thing is not going to work on this one, what I  want to know is what is your position on illegal immigrants, (not undocumented workers) there's a reason why your congress aproval rating is 14%.

Paaleaze! We need Obama Now? CFR member, On his knees to AIPAC!! We need 180 degrees from all of that ilk, democrat or rebublican. If we don't vote Ron Paul in 2008 we'll all be sucking pond water in 2012. If this republic of ours does not change direction now, the GLOBOCOPS will be here in force in the near future.
So now he's proud that he uses obscene language and that he's taken illegal drugs in front of children.  Anyone else see the problem with this?
They're talking about polling of Dem vs. Reps, such as Obama vs Romney, of course.
Well Obama, at least Romney's not on Judical Watch's "Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians" for 2007

http://www.judicialwatch.org/

Now there's a contrast!

(On a side note: anyone that says Barrack Hussein Obama again should be taken out to pasture and shot - he is NOT Muslim people!!! He never was Muslim.  But even if he was, would that even matter?  NO! So quit all of this backhanded politics)
BTW, what is the significance of matchup polls this far ahead when the primaries haven't started yet?
Obama was great on Meet the Press and C-SPAN.  Good Luck Obama, I'm praying and hoping that you'll be our next President b/c we really need true change.
Too bad that he can't beat Hillary :(

Ron Paul is the only candidate who could take more votes than Hillary in the election, period.
Why you should vote a democrat into the Oval-Office.
-To finally end this great long lasting economy.
-To turn tax paying workers into unemployment
   collectors.
-Sell missile technology to China for election fund
donations(oh wait, Billary already did that).
-While were at it might as well raise taxes.
-Preach separation of church and state, then go to
churches to be hypocrites and preach politics.
-Last but not least, cut the military, bargain with
the terrorists & ask them to not hurt us in
exchange for converting to Islam and obeying their
   Sharia law.
Romney doesn't use the "real harsh ones." No. He just INSULTS THE DIGNITY OF HIS WIFE, that sexist, by calling her (whom he hopes to be "First Lady of the U.S."), "HOT" and liking his finger making the "SSS" sound, BDFORE A CROWD OF STRANGERS! I wouldn't even date a man who disrespected me in such a way in front of America's voters, much less marry him! Poor Ann. Romney, What an a______! i won't use 'the harsh ones.'
Romney is the biggest phony in the whole bunch....bigger than Hillary. I hope niether  Candidate Bot wins thier primary. That would be a very ugly election.

"I don't say really bad words"....HA! Do they just have Romney Robot on auto pilot now?
Darla. I can "illuminate" for you I live in Detroit proper not some yuppie suburb and no the phone poll didn't have Ron Paul in there.  I hung up because all the rest are just globalist puppets.  Ron Paul is the only American in the race for president.  He had my vote in 88 and he has my vote now.  It's sad that it has taken this country 20 years to learn who and what Ron Paul is all about. Vote for freedom, vote RON PAUL.
Joe are you nuts the last thing this counrty needs is another member of the CFR opperating our policies.
They are marching us into a one world government.
And pushing the North American Union down our throats.
Yet you all seem to like the thought of the UN dictating our countries policies.
We aren't the souverign nation we once were.
The change we need is not Obama.  Its freedom from the federal reserve.  World policeing and Empire building.
Look around we are being watched and treated like enemies.  We need to take back our nation.
And the Dems and reps are all in bed with the banks.
Get informed from something other then you tv.
All the is bought and paid for.
The only person that can beat Ron Paul is the main stream media.  They aren't costing Huckabee, Romney, Clinton, Edwards, or Obama any votes.  They are costing Ron Paul millions of votes.

Google Inc. has proved that Ron Paul gets the least amount of press coverage although his name is search substantially more often than any other candidate.
Right now I prefer Obama out of the big 3 on the Dem side (although Edwards says some good things... I find it hard to trust him...) Unfortunately none of the big 3 Dems plan on doing anything to bring home our troops from around the world and to bring us the Civil Liberties we deserve. That's why I, a lifelong Democrat, support Republican Ron Paul for President in 2008.
the worst thing we deserve it's Clintons ; the best thing we won't get is Ron Paul, whom we won't get because we are agree to live in  the "clintons-in bushes- country"; the silence is the best way to commit suicide ( Kurt Vonnegut)
Wow.  Mr. Obama is sooo cool.  He uses the harsh, juicy swear words.  He smokes pot.  Throw that into his little experience and even worse ability to work with others and we have his Mom's favorite candidate! HaHa
Obama and his wife are both CFR. We need a President that puts America FIRST!

Ron Paul will NOT allow any CFR members in his White House!

Obama, Mitt, Rudy and Huckaby are all for AIPAC and they all support Israel, like four little two year old children arguing who is mamma's favorite.
As an agent of Change, Obama has aleady had a positive effect and change on the political landscape as evidenced by the "nicer tone" of the campaign commericals and political discourse prevelent today, which heretofore has  been dirty and ugly.  This is due to Obama's stance not too take the low road.  To stay positive and above the frey, preferring to take the high road, to focuss on the issues and his message of change. -- And then they followed.

We all know that experience matters -- but what matters more is Judgment, Wisdom, Honesty and Integrity.  We have to remember and weigh its seriousness, that in the most important policy decision of our times, the Iraq War, which has helped to escalate the present situation, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards got it Wrong.  Barack Obama got it Right.

Obama a man of Judgment; a man of Positive Change.

I'd pay to see him try against Paul.
Dunno what it is, but I just don't trust Obama.
actually hillary collected the most insurance money from insurance lobbyists last year. more than any other senator, around 22.7 million.  obama has NEVER taken money from special interests groups and has the strength and conviction to not give in.  hope is not fantasy, but having strength and overcoming the special interests in what seems like a desperate situation.  hillary is the most devisive candidate in the election and if nominated by the dems, will be beat by the republicans... obama is not afraid to reach across the aisle and get things done.  give america a chance...obama 08
This country is very ill after 7 years of this Bush regime and the pure negect of the American workers and young and old and let us not forget the infra- struture !!!
We as Americans can join with Sen. Obama and begin the healing process !!!
Sen. Barack Obama for a new beginning !!!!!
As different as they claim to be, both Mitt and Obama are charismatic "doers" that make things happen. If they don't make the primaries,(and they could find their common ground) then as independents on the same ticket, they could take the whole thing in a landslide.
Hillary is for big business. vote obama
Wayne, have you actually read the story of David vs. Goliath.  Apparently not, so I guess I'll be the spoiler.  David wins.  Not a political comment, it annoys me when people use literary or biblical references so poorly.
Obama would make a better president than Romney?

Obama's resume is a sad pathetic joke when put beside Romney's.  Romney has more business, financial, problem solving, management,  and executive experience and success than Obama could ever dream of having.

All Obama has going for him is the support of a bunch of idiots who buy into his empty rhetoric about change.  He throws out a a couple of buzz words like "change" and "hope" every five seconds without having any real accomplishments or substance to offer and his minions kiss his ass.  No wonder Obama does so well among college students.  College kids are naive, arrogant, idealists living off of mommy and daddy and who don't know the first thing about the real world.

Hillary is going to have the nomination sewn up pretty soon and Osama Obama will be nothing but an obscure minor footnote in American political history.
What I like about Obama is he is honest with the voters. He doesn't pander. He actually weighs the issues and is willing to discuss differing points of view in a rational manner. He is a brilliant guy with a fantastic wife. He will be a President we can be proud of, if America is willing to be great once again.
Anyone can beat Ron Paul! What a joke!
Barack Obama stands for nothing. He votd for the patriot act, cannot commit to withdrawing troops out of Iraq by 2013 and supports bush's sanctions against Iran and raising taxes.

I think I'll vote for Ron Paul
I think what he means is they do not mention Paul in the polls. My Mom's BF is a longtime Republican and activist. When he was telephone polled (lol) just before Xmas, Paul was not an option amongst the GOP candidates. Romney, Huckabee, Guiliani, Thompson, McCain, and Other. Seriously. He just so happens to be a Republican and not a Statist Neo-Con so he of course is supporting Ron Paul! I have read in other forums that this kind of polling is normal though. I myself am registered Repub and I only have a cellphone and no land line. Another possibilty too since most of RP's supporters are younger and rely only on cellphones. My 2 cents.
They do poll Ron Paul, he's averaging less than 4%. http://www.pollster.com/08-US-Rep-Pres-Primary.php
The idea that Obama wouldn't beat Paul is ludicrous.
Wayne forgive me for not believing your little spiel about the 1-2 punch but I heard it all in 2004 and see no reason why it will be any different in 2008.

I think Hillary will win the democrat nomination and people like you are fatally underestimating the number of people out there who either hate her or do not trust her enough to vote for her.  You talked about the GOP lacking unity.....if Hillary is the Dem candidate you are going to see the GOP unite like never before.  Doubt me now..beleive me when my words have come true.
No wonder Ron Paul has low poll numbers.
Wayne, do you read these blogs at all? It is laughable that you think the dems are united. Have you not read the venom between the Obama and Clinton camps? The in party dismisal of Kucinich and Biden as having a chance? Have you not heard Edwards proclaim all other canidates in the running as part of an old corrupt system? Have'nt you heard Hillary call all the others unqualified for lack of experience? Or everyone else call Hillary fake and unable to react to unplanted situations? Those are not republican talking points, that is democrat back biting. To me it is politics as usual, but you are delusional if you think they are the united manipulators of the opposistion. Try to function in the real world. It will be yet another close election, that is the sad truth. The reason it is sad , is because we may be subjected to more stupid court battles and chad counts. I'm trying to help you here, you people that get so caught up in fantasy end up angry and bitter when the real world crashes in on you.
First he has to get nominated, horse before the cart Barak. You can't promise anything till we vote, and that is not happening yet, three more days to go. Happy New Year everyone! I hope everyone uses designated drivers.
Maybe if they 'polled' Ron Paul, then the national polls would match the straw votes and online polling (Ron runs first and second in most of those polls).
Alas, the media won't -- but they will run hit pieces on Ron Paul (my wife's grandmother first heard of Ron Paul this way right before Christmas -- so she is now not too keen on him).
Dennis Kucinich is the ONLY ONE who could beat Ron Paul.

Nobody else stands up for the Constitution like Ron Paul or Dennis Kucinich.
