Battle for Iowa: Huck v. Mitt

Posted: Monday, December 31, 2007 9:36 AM by Domenico Montanaro

"Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney took their battle over Christian voters to the pews as both attended services while their campaigns spanned Iowa in a final Sunday pitch to evangelicals. With Christian conservatives expected to make up as much as 40 percent of Republican caucusgoers, Romney dispatched surrogates to meet with pastors in the far corners of Iowa, hoping to blunt Huckabee's momentum among evangelicals. On Friday, three national religious leaders backing Huckabee -- Tim LaHaye, Michael Farris and Rick Scarborough -- convened a conference call with Iowa pastors to urge them to use Sunday's services to drive up participation by Christian voters, who polls suggest favor the former Arkansas governor by comfortable margins."

Per the New York Daily News, "Huckabee and Romney have been engaged in an increasingly nasty tussle for first place among GOP voters in Iowa, where the winner of their clash may be determined by which candidate can more effectively marshal their supporters to caucus sites on Thursday. Romney, who has the bigger war chest, is taking the time-tested route of building county support and approaching Republicans based on their prior voting records… Team Huckabee is relying more heavily on a patchwork of volunteer support from affinity groups such as home-schoolers, Christian groups and supporters of the so-called FairTax plan."

By the way, Huckabee is taking the Romney jabs VERY personally. Politico's Roger Simon got Huckabee to say he was owed a personal apology from Romney for the campaign attacks. “‘I didn't draw first blood and say terrible things about Mitt,’ Huckabee said. ‘I'm not angry. This is politics; it is the way it works. But he not only wants to make up his record, but my record.’”

“‘This is not the way a man ought to become president,’ Huckabee went on. ‘Certainly not in our party.’”

The Des Moines Register looks at the Clinton campaign's efforts to get out the vote among women. "Iowans who do a Google search for 'children' or 'recipe' or 'safe toys' will see a sponsored link to a 'You go girl!' site promoting Clinton. The ads are targeted to IP addresses registered in Iowa. The women-tailored advertising is paid for by Emily's List, the women-friendly fund-raising group.”

The Washington Post looks at Obama's ground game and some of the new innovations the campaign has implemented. "With turnout likely to be decisive in a Democratic race that pollsters call a three-way tie, Obama (Ill.) has built an Election Day operation that combines an apparent edge in technology with the tried-and-true grunt work of a traditional Iowa campaign. Edwards and Clinton have also assembled formidable ground operations, with outside help from labor unions and political interest groups."

It doesn't take long out here in Iowa to see the enthusiasm gap between the Democrats and the Republicans. The Wall Street Journal takes a look at it and wonders what repercussions this enthusiasm gap will have for the general election.

USA Today writes about the candidates’ final pitches in Iowa.

The Los Angeles Times looks at the electability arguments the Dem front-runners are making. “Clinton and her supporters say she's been battle-tested by the ‘Republican attack machine,’ during her eight years in the White House and two successful Senate runs. Edwards touts his experience as the party's vice presidential candidate in 2004 and his appeal to rural America. Obama points to his promise to unite the country. And both men cite polls.”

The Des Moines Register examines the influence of 527s in the state, particularly with two ads -- one for Edwards, one for Huckabee. "They look just like the campaign ads from the candidates, but they're not. As the hours tick down to Thursday's caucuses, outside groups - in some cases run by people with close ties to the actual campaigns - are making their 2008 election debut in Iowa."

There is a new poll from Iowa this morning who shows Huckabee holding on to the tiniest of leads... and some major movement for McCain: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2007/12/last-stretch-in-iowa-zogby-updates-his.html
Dems are fired up thanks to the imperial nature of our current president, Bush is the true drag on the repub party. His recent 'don't worry, be happy' speech on the economy shows he is not willing to be honest with the american public, thanks Georgie, you make it so easy for the dems, keep up the fake good news. He thought he had Iran to beat us over the head with, the intelligence community scotched that, thank god for wiser heads still working in government.
Romney is the ONLY candidate who is not intentionally leaving states behind. I find it ludicrous that any candidate thinks they can win the general election when they completely ignore purple states in the primaries. Do you think McCain can swing Iowa his way in the general? Do you think Huckabee can swing New Hampshire in the general? Do you think Guiliani can swing any states...ever? Romney may not be the perfect candidate, but he IS running on a platform of party inclusion and unification. He is the only candidate out there that can bring together both social and economic conservatives.
Huckabee continues to run from his poor record in Arkansas by making sensational, incorrect and, frankly, unchristian-like comments toward Romney.  Since when is it incorrect for a candidate (Romney) to point out the obvious errors of another candidate (Huckabee)?
So, Evangelical leaders nationwide are having their local Baptist leaders "instruct" their parishioners to vote a certain way (Huckabee)... ARE YOU SERIOUS???  Aside from the separation of church and state issue, what kind of zombies do they think we are?  Aren't we allowed to decide for OURSELVES?  God talks to us individually thru prayer, right?  I find this very distateful.
McCain and Huckabee are the ones who are desperate...they don't want anyone to know or ask about their records! Romney has been having "Ask Mitt Anything" meetings for over a year he's not afraid to discuss his past or his positions. Has Huckabee or McCain been so open?....NO, in fact they won't even address what Romney has brought to light! They're just side-kicks for one another and their only rebuttal to Romney is "Liar".

Romney is by far the best candidate, he will provide the kind of leadership, knowledge, and rational needed to erase our trade deficit, ween our foreign dependency of oil, and strengthen the family (his family looks pretty exemplerary to me).
Mr.Huckabee is acting like this is his first ever campaign, has he never had someone magnify his record.  He is sure getting personal over someone else pointing out the FACTS of his record and he is Crying back by saying they are fasle, misleading and lies.  Common Huckabee supporters, look at the facts and realize your guy is crying over milk he spilled and wishing he had it to pour on his presidential cereal.
Way to go Huck! I can't believe our two-faced media in this country. Everyone in the media loved Huckabee when he was a long-shot. Now that evangelicals as well as physcal conservatives have finally awakened to the fact that he is the only TRUE conservative (which explains his skyrocket to the top of the polls) and the Demorats don't stand a chance against him, now they're critical. If people would just take the time to visit his website they can clearly see that not only does Mike Huckabee have clear answers but that they actually make sense. If anyone would take the time to look at both records, they will clearly see that Huckabee has the better record. Romney  bashes Huckabee on clemency, the truth is that Romney had less than 200 clemency cases come to his desk, and I believe he denied them all (might screw up his presidential bid - also turned pro-life somewhere along the way for the same purpose). While Huckabee had over 8700 clemency cases come to his desk in which he denied over 90% of. Did he make some mistakes, sure - as do we all (if you haven't then you can gladly pitch the first rock). The media wants to bash him because he's "taking the Romney attack ads personally". When someone out and out lies about you, how else are you supposed to take that? To take it any other way would be to respond in the "usual Washington way." Sorry, I want a man in the White House who will stand for the truth and against manufactured Romney lies. Why has Romney started the attack ads, because out-spending Huckabee 20-1 hasn't worked! If he'll blow money like that in a losing cause to win Iowa, just think of what he'll do with you tax dollars. Romney is a fake, from his record to his devotion to his faith, to his "stand" on pro-life issues right down to his stump speech. The only thing that is authentic about this guy is his hypocracy. Wake up people, Huckabee is our only chance. Thompson is too old and his grandaughter (or excuse me, 2nd or 3rd wife) can't be there constantly to wake him up. And he's a moral conservative??!! PLEASE! Same goes for Guilianni, who's on his third wife and is pro-abortion and pro-gun control - he's a closet Demorat for crying out loud! McCain, another who's had his midlife crisis (he's got a grandaughter wife too) - McCain - Feingold is all you need to know about McCain. Not only is Huckabee ten times better than these guys on every issue, he is doing something that no one has done since Reagan - he's pulling in moderate Democrats (you know, people who are Republicans and just don't know it). When you look at the facts, the choice is clear people - Mike Huckabee for President. A real, truthful, morally and physcally conservative choice. Why? Because IKNOWTHETRUTH
Just what we need another "compassionate conservative" in the WhiteHouse.  Huckabee is a G.W. clone. Why would any body vote to continue the same old b.s?
You wouldn't know the truth if it bit you on the behind!
John Alexander 10:16 you've got it right as usual.
The newpaper w/ the "un-endorsement" of Romney had it just right. PHONEY!! A complete re-write of his resume' and positions, from abortion to 2nd amendment and fictitious NRA endorsements, Gay rights/marriage, etc etc; his tax increases (oh sorry, fees)the Massachusetts Romney vs the Pres candidate and so on. He is so plastic his rear end should be checked for a "made in China" stamp and his paint should be checked for lead!
Glad to see all those Iowan evangelical pastors keeping the Sabbath day holy, " Tim LaHaye, Michael Farris and Rick Scarborough -- convened a conference call with Iowa pastors to urge them to use Sunday's services to drive up participation by Christian voters, who polls suggest favor the former Arkansas governor by comfortable margins"

Does anybody else find it extremely frightening that Huckabee is using church pulpits to further his campaign? That disgusts me.
Mitt Romney did nothing but focus on the issues. The response by both McCain and Huckabee are typical of individuals who are losing a debate. They deflect focus on the issues and make every attempt to call the personal credibility of their opponent into question.

Here are some facts...

Public education rating by state:

Massachusetts #2 (Romney)

Arizona #50 (McCain, dead last)

Arkansas #32 (Huckabee, bottom third)

Health Care:

Romney's healthcare initiative in Massachusetts significantly reduced the cost of health insurance to the citizens of the state. Nearly 300,000 citizens without previous healthcare coverage are now insured.

The Economy:

Mitt Romney not only has an MBA from one of the most prestigious business schools in the world, he has demonstrated his ability to apply what he has learned in both the public and private sectors. His economic success at Bain Capital, in the Olympics, and in dealing with the Massachusetts state deficit were not anomalies.

If the republicans want a conservative candidate that has demonstrated that he can get the job done... it is Mitt Romney.

If Huckabee needs more funds for his campaign he should sell the $ 70,000 worth of furniture he stold from the Arkansas Governor's Mansion on eBay. I'm sure it would have some collectors value. He could auction it as the, "Furniture stold by a Pastor from the people he wants to elect him as President of the United States on the basis of his personal integrity.".

It should be no surprise that the "Huckster" made the top ten list for the most corrupt politicians in 2007 by Judicial watch.

http://www.judicialwatch.org/judicial-watch-announces-list-washington-s-ten-most-wanted-corrupt-politicians-2007

It is no surprise that the "Huckster" is backing off on his attacks on Romney... they are simply not credible... just like his name implies, he is the "Huckster".
Are we prematurely and un-wisely writing RON PAUL off?  HE DID WIN a Republican Straw Poll there on December 4th. Can we ignore that he has television and radio ads in the first FIVE primary states?  Can we ignore his incredible fundraising abilities?  Can we ignore the fact that he is LEADIN THE GOP candidates with Straw Poll Victories with (33) victories OVER THOMPSON with(24), where he is also in the lead with most recent victories in (18) states OVER MITT ROMNEY with only (9).
