Rudy: Florida, Florida, Florida

Posted: Monday, December 31, 2007 11:02 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Matthew E. Berger
Tim Russert said it first, but the Giuliani campaign seems to have adopted it as their mantra, "Florida, Florida, Florida."

The Giuliani campaign released its latest “strategy memo” to the press Monday to reemphasize a late state strategy that is increasingly under scrutiny from the mainstream media. The memo continues the usual Giuliani campaign refrain that few delegates will actually be awarded in the next couple of weeks and that the states Giuliani has focused on -- Florida, Illinois, Missouri, New York, California, Georgia and New Jersey -- will propel him to the nomination.

“Putting a high priority on spending our time and money in a proportional basis in Florida and the large delegate states voting on February 5th is clearly the right thing to do,” Giuliani Strategy Director Brent Seaborn writes.

The campaign has at times suffered from being outside the main dialogue by not exchanging barbs with Romney and Huckabee and campaigning in other states. Now, by leaving Iowa, Giuliani is entering into a long media blackout, as well as two days of no public events. The memo serves to validate the “slow and steady” mentality the Giuliani campaign has adopted and to try and draw the attention of reporters camped out in Des Moines.

Obviously, the Giuliani campaign is trying to downplay the significance of Iowa and New Hampshire, even as Giuliani will spend the first week of the new year in the Granite State. They believe that the contest will essentially start anew on Jan. 29, and that a Giuliani victory in Florida will make him look like the frontrunner.

Seaborn acknowledges that Giuliani could finish outside the top three in Iowa, perhaps as low as sixth place. He suggests polls in the next few weeks will be contradictory and that only the numbers in Florida, which he says have been stable all year, suggest the future.

“As in all races, expect to see signs of tightening in Florida as Election Day approaches, but also expect us to consolidate more support as candidates drop out of the race,” he said. “We are very proud of our Florida organization, which, like all of our state organizations, is prepared for the long, hard fight to win.”

But the memo downplays the free media that early state winners will receive, and the effect of voters picking a perceived winner in subsequent primaries. It ignores the perceived notion that Giuliani losses in the early states, even if they are not significant to the delegate count, will hurt Giuliani’s reputation and boost other candidates, which will make Florida and the Feb. 5 contests harder for him to win.

The ultimate goal of the memo, one can assume, is to get anchors and reporters covering the Iowa caucuses to acknowledge the Giuliani approach and not laud the victor with front-runner status and to try and get as much attention from the press in the next week as possible, even as they are out of state.

Guiliani is relying on the only strategy left to him - the fact that FL has so many retired NY'ers living there, and that most of them are old enough to have forgotten what a schmuk he really is.
Rudy is trying to win with the old GOP campaign of fear, fear, and fear.  Telling people that the entire middle east wants to kill all of us, is so reckless, he should not be allowed to run for any office.  He's a liar, he did nothing on 9-11 that makes him deserving of the oval office, and all his claims to fame in NYC, had very little to do with him...crime went down in NYC because Clinton gave Rudy more cops for the streets, the economy was going strong thanks to the Clinton fiscal policies, Rudy's predcessor left him with a surplus budget only for Rudy to squander, and but for Disney, Time Square would not have improved as it did.
I AM ROBERT A. FLOWERS AT raf3rd@wevtv.net and i strongly support Rudy Giuliani for President and all americans should know that he is head and heels above the demo's and the republican candidates in ability and principals.
THE MUSLIMS AND MOST PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE IN ISLAM WANT ALL AMERICANS AND JEWS DEAD. READ THE ISLAM TEACHINGS . RUDY GUILIANI IS THE ONLY CHOICE WE HAVE TO COUNTER THAT!
God help this country if another Republican wins the Presidency, especially a Bush clone like Guiliani. Tell him to go back to NY City and keep his three wives happy. But don't let him NEAR the presidency. Like Joe Biden says: "A vowel a noun and 911" That's all Rudy knows. In other words: Fear, fear and more fear!
ROBERT A. FLOWERS, ORLANDO, FL:

You are a very disturbed individual, and I hope you get the psychiatric help you clearly need.
If Iowa is not that important then why has he been there and spent money there, seems like he has had to change strategies when he didn't become the odds on favorite from the start. Rudy is toast, he just can't admit it yet.
Three more days and it begins, yehah, can't wait for you Iowans to get us started, Happy New Year to all.
Rudy is the answer for all of USA !
He is the only one who has the best resume for this job ! USA deserves a President like Rudy Giuliani.
If Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney or John McCain is the republican candidate then Hillary Clinto will be our next president. Simple as that. Rudy is the only one that can win it for the Republicans.
all i know is that when disaster struck rudy performed under fire as well as any president ever has , who knows how some of these other candidates will do ? are they going to run and hide? i wouldn't take the chance! rudy is the man! oops! the person!
Robert A Flowers.
Get real old man, and do find your medication. I believe your pill rolled under the bed. Find it.
Can anyone really think the Persident of the USA is someone with a name like Rudy?? :-)))))
Rudy stood up to La Cosa Nostra that put a $400,000 contract on him. He will stand up to the special interests too; that's why so many of their minions get on these comment sites to trash him. They would rather Republicans nominate Huckabee or Romney because they think they can crush them in a general election. That is why they never trash those two.
The people trashing Rudy would never vote for any Republican candidate.

Rudy responded better to 9/11 than anyone of any party responded to Katrina and he turned the economy of a dying New York  around by making it safe to do business there. Who else running was Time's man of the year?

If you do not think most New Yorkers respect Rudy, just watch how he sweeps the delegates in our primary on February 5.
Once again MSNBC shows it self too be the ultimate masters of spin. With all the creditable cable ,print T.V.outlets headlining the Iowa race as neck in neck too close to call, tied etc.MSNBC,that paragon of spin journalism has chosen a poll that shows one candiate, their favorite amature,Obama, as pulling away.I guess   Chris, the Spin, Matthews really callc all their shots.
Rudy has the proven leadership, intelligence, and management skills required of a President. Romney also has those skills, but may not be as strong nationally. The rest of the Republicans and leading Democrats are unqualified for the job.
to mort levine--learn how to at least type before you start slamming anyone, especially MSNBC and Chris Matthews.  What do you prefer, FOX Noise? And by the way, Rudy is a corrupt schmuck who shouldn't be garbage collector, let alone president of the US.
