A lot on line for interest groups

From NBC's Chuck Todd
DES MOINES, Iowa -- An email from the Club for Growth this morning criticizing John McCain over his declaration last night that if given the chance he would again vote against the Bush tax cuts reminded me that a number of third-party special interest groups (on both sides of the spectrum) have a lot on the line in Iowa, New Hampshire and beyond.

The Club, in particular, is watching a potential nightmare scenario brewing in the two early states as the GOP candidates they like the least -- Mike Huckabee and John McCain -- have a shot at sweeping the first two states. The Club went negative on Huckabee early and often and all that's happened as his numbers have shot up. That said, the negative economic info the Club has provided for the public record has been used by Romney so they have to feel pretty good about that.

That said, if Huckabee and McCain win Iowa and New Hampshire and then end up having a 2-way showdown for the GOP nod, it could spell the end of the Club's effectiveness as a conservative third party advocacy group. They Club knows how to make waves but they've always struggled to notch victories outside of House races. If the Club ends up with Huckabee and/or McCain egg on its face in 2008, will that mean some other Republican candidates stop taking their calls?

But the Club isn't the only special interest group with a lot riding on the results of Iowa and New Hampshire. On the Democratic side, three groups in particular have put their money and resources where their mouth is, including: AFSCME, SEIU and EMILY's List.

Nobody probably has more to worry about than AFSCME's Gerald McEntee. A second straight losing endorsement could seriously jeopardize McEntee's clout in the union movement. Maybe that's why McEntee is doubling down by shipping some 200+ organizers to Iowa on Clinton's behalf and being the only Democratic-leaning group to go negative on any candidate (in their case, Obama's the target).

SEIU didn't endorse a candidate nationally but many of the state and local affils have poured money into a 527 on behalf of Edwards. Should Edwards not win Iowa or should his effort not catch fire post-Iowa, this could also hurt Andy Stern's influence in the labor movement, particularly since, like McEntee, he backed the wrong horse in 2004 (Howard Dean).

And then there's EMILY's List. Early on, there was an expectation that they would be a serious player for Clinton here in Iowa. But we're having a hard time finding out exactly how they are helping. Some Clinton partisans I've talked too have been disappointed by the group's efforts. But in defense of EMILY's List, this is there first time making a serious effort on the presidential level and they may find out they are far more effective sticking to their House and Senate bread and butter.

Mitt Romney Flip Flopping on Abortion watch this!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFMdK0TWtks&feature=related

Do you really want a scum bag like this.
A photograph of GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney at a 1994 Planned Parenthood fund-raiser has surfaced, once again raising questions about the former Bay State’s governor’s abortion flip-flopping.

The picture, a copy of which was obtained by the Herald, shows Romney and his wife Ann at a house party fund-raiser in Scituate with Nicki Nichols Gamble, who was the president of the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts at the time. Romney has already downplayed ties to Planned Parenthood after revelations that Ann Romney donated $150 to the group.

Gamble said the pic was snapped at an event at GOP activist Eleanor Bleakie’s house and that she “clearly” remembered speaking with Romney at the event. At the time, Romney was running as a pro-choice Republican against U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.).

“My recollection is that we talked about his senate candidacy and the fact that he was supporting Roe v. Wade and a choice agenda at the time,” Gamble told the Herald. “It was a Planned Parenthood event. We were there to discuss our programs and our advocacy.”

The event was held the same day Ann Romney wrote a check to the pro-choice group. Romney has previously said he had “no recollection” of his wife writing the check to Planned Parenthood.

Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom called the flap “a dog bites man story.”

“Governor Romney used to have a different position on abortion,” Fehrnstrom said. “He is now firmly pro-life and has made it clear that as President he will advocate for a culture that welcomes life and protects the sanctity of life. This is the same path that Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush followed.”

Because of his abortion shift, Romney has been branded a flip-flopper by his GOP primary opponents, as well Democrats. Romney has stated he became pro-life in 2004 during the stem cell debate in Massachusetts.

Beyond attending the event, Romney filled out a 2002 questionnaire for the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund in which he said he supported Roe v. Wade, sex education in schools and increased access to emergency contraception.

“With Mitt Romney, this has been more than a flip-flop. This has been an extreme makeover,” said Planned Parenthood spokesman Angus McQuilken. “What voters need to know about Mitt Romney is this: where he stands on any issue is always a moving target.”

Ann, what does that have to do with the story? You can always tell when partisan hacks are on the prowl. They don't even have the manners to read the blogs they post on. Just cut and paste some useless tripe. The story is very interesting. I am sure it only scratches the surface of 527's for wich, it is a gamble. I would not like to be the one to have wasted rescources by picking a loser. For some though it may be a good thing for the country and some it could be bad.
This why I support Obama. No special interest money and advisors coming to his campaign to help him get elected to then stand with their hands out wanting a larger slice of tax payer dollars. Also Obama has zero endorsements from establishment Democrats, Hillary has those locked up. Meaning that if Hillary would be elected, her first days in office would be consumed with handing out favors to the Democrat establishment and providing tax payer dollars to all the special interest groups that donated to her campaign. Hillary. More of the same.
Yeah right Chuck. How about Senators Tom Coburn (OK) and Jim DeMint(SC)? Elected with support from the Club these guys have turned the Senate on its earmark. The Club won 7 of 8 house races in the 2006 general election.

If not Huck/McCain wins in Iowa/NH will you say the Club is all powerful? Your analysis is suspect.
I am more than a little disgusted by the unions going negative on Obama, who has a good record on labor issues and support of many unions members in his home state. If they want to endorse a candidate fine, but spending big money attacking someone who has worked and voted on their behalf goes to far.
The Club for Growth would like to go back to the "Good old days" when six percent of the population controlled ninety percent of the money.
Well Mark, You may support Obama and he might possible win the Iowa Caucuses but Clinton is still way ahead nationally.  I feel she will also win
Iowa and New Hampshire, possibly not South Carolina due to all of the black vote there, however the African American community does love the Clintons.

At any rate if by some very slight chance Obama should win the nomination and I think it is a very, slight chance,  Here is a quote today from Mike Bloomberg, Mayor of New York  "Despite public denials, the mayor has privately suggested several scenarios in which he might be a viable candidate: for instance, if the opposing major party candidates are poles apart, like Mike Huckabee, a Republican, versus Barack Obama or John Edwards as the Democratic nominee"

I have said before and I will say it again and again,
America will not elect Barack Obama President for numerous reasons, one of the main being "INEXPERIENCE"
Obama quotes Bill Clinton's 1992 comments in his stump speeches and guess what Bill Clinton made numerous foreign policy blunders early in his presidency.
We do not have the luxury today as we did in 1992 of
a Novice making Blunders.  The world is much too dangerous.  I am a Democrat and I do support Hilary and the Clintons have experience now but Bill did not have it in 1992 and neither does Obama.
I will SUPPORT Bloomberg and Hagel should he become the nominee however I do not feel he will. FELLOW IOWANS PLEASE BE CAUTIOUS AND PLEASE DO NOT CAUCUS FOR BARACK OBAMA - EDWARDS IS FINE BUT I PREFER CLINTON HOWEVER IN NO WAY OBAMA.
Hey Mark G.

How much help and money from special interests will Obama take if he win's the nomination?
Obama is the best man for the job!  He is not mixed up in this kind of mess!

Go OBAMA!!!!

Mark G, if you really followed Obama and read his advisors list, you will find oil and insurance lobbyist on the list. It's just that they are helping him for free. Imagine that :-)
The 'Club for Growth' are a pack of worthless clowns

Being attacked by them should be a badge of honor for Republican candidates.
I'll look more favorably on a Republican who is attacked by them in case the Democrats nominate a crooked candidate

What kind of fiscal irresponsibility is it to advocate endless tax cuts for the wealthy and for corporations ?

Yet, not a whimper about this endless (and incredibly expensive and useless) war in Iraq.......
I once donated money to EMILY's list....

Never again !!
NOT A PENNY !!

When you use contributions to support a CROOK.....
,,,, that's it !!!

Bye, Bye EMILY's list !!

I DON'T LISTEN TO ANYTHING "THE CLUB" HAS TO SAY! Any group who think they have the kind of power to say the generation nearing retirement CARES NOTHING FOR THEIR GRANDCHILDREN, ONLY CARE ABOUT MEDICARE AND GETTING THEIR SOCIAL SECURITY CHECKS...is NOTHING in my book! They are OUT of my book! Just like their crony, Willard M. Romney!
Every person and group have their right to an opinion.  I just wish that the groups that are doing promotions or negative statements would also state what the group believes.  That way we could get a better sense of what the persepective is.  We need to say where we are coming from to better understand each other.
Chuck, I know you're on tight deadlines, but your opinions would be more credible if you took the time to check your spelling. You have 4 or 5 grade-school errors in this piece.
Concerned Citizen,

How is Edwards fine and Obama not if all you are worried about is inexperience? Edwards only had one term in the Senate, Obama is still in his first. Does the extra 2 years (part of which he spent campaigning) make John Edwards that much more qualified to be president? Or is there something else you have against Obama you're not letting on to?
Edwards- a trial lawer, made millions stealing from people who worked a lifetime to build businesses and medical practices. Edwards has the largest house (28,200 sq ft) in Orange county. Remember, after the Electrical Workers Union, the second largest PAC contributor to the Democrats is the Trial Lawyers Association. There is no bigger hypocrite than a Mercedes Marxist! A multimillionare lawyer who says he represents the interests of the middle class and working man is full of crap!

Vote Early and Vote Often!

TO:Ingraham in Raliegh NC, FROM: Big Al in Chicago-
Get the facts on Obama before your talk about his judgement. Has Rezkobama been sharing some of his cocaine with you?
I have spent my whole life in Chicago, the most corrupt city in the most corrupt county (Cook) in America. Barrack Hussein Rezkobama is a bought and paid for crooked Chicago Democrat. If Rezkobama is so honest let him come clean about the $200000+ in donations from indicted Chicago slumlord Antoin "Tony" Rezko. In June 2005, Obama bought a mansion on the South Side for $1.65 million,$300,000 less than the asking price. On the same day, Rezko's wife, Rita Rezko, bought the vacant lot next door from the same seller. The owner had listed the properties for sale together. He sold the house to Obama for $300,000 below the asking price but got his asking price on the lot from Rezko's wife.

Last year, Rita Rezko sold a strip of that vacant lot to Obama for $104,500 -- a deal Obama later apologized for, acknowledging that people might think he got a favor from Rezko. Obama called the episode "boneheaded" and a "mistake." So much for your "brilliant" Obama, and this is the man you want with his finger on the nuclear button!

Obama claims he worked as a community organizer but here is what he really did- Rezko's New Kenwood LLC got letters of support from Obama, who represented a nearby Senate district. "I am writing in support of the New Kenwood LLC's proposal to build a ninety-seven unit apartment building at 48th and Cottage Grove for senior citizens," Obama wrote in separate letters, each dated Oct. 28, 1998, to city and state housing officials. "This project will provide much needed housing for Fourth Ward citizens." At the time he wrote the letters, Obama was also a lawyer with Miner Barnhill & Galland, the law firm Davis formerly headed. Among the firm's clients were several companies owned by Davis and Rezko (Rezmar Corporation, look it up!). Davis and Rezko hired Daley & George, the law firm of the Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's brother Michael, to help them get $3.1 million from bonds issued by the city of Chicago. Rezko and Davis paid the city $1 for the land and spent more than $100,000 to clean it up, including the removal of an underground storage tank. Some tainted land was left behind, but state environmental officials approved construction after Rezko and Davis agreed to cover the polluted areas with parking lots, sidewalks or three feet of dirt, records show. You see how Rezkobama is deeply concerned about the environment! The $14.6 million Cottage View Terrace was funded entirely by city, state and federal taxpayers. The project included $855,000 in development fees for New Kenwood. Records don't show how Davis and Rezko split the money. Davis owned 51 percent of New Kenwood, Rezko 49 percent, according to the records. For more details look it up in the Chicago Sun Times newspaper!

Barack Hussein Rezkobama wrote letters to city and state officials supporting his political patron Tony Rezko's successful bid to get more than $14 million from taxpayers to build apartments for senior citizens. The deal included $855,000 in development fees for Rezko and his partner, Allison S. Davis, Obama's former boss, according to records from the project, which was four blocks outside Obama's state Senate district. Obama's letters, written nearly nine years ago, for the first time show the Democratic presidential hopeful did a political favor for Rezko -- a longtime friend, campaign fund-raiser and client of the law firm where Obama worked -- who was indicted last fall on federal charges that accuse him of demanding kickbacks from companies seeking state business under Illinois Democratic Governor Blagojevich. In addition to a land deal, Sen. Barack Obama's ties to indicted dealmaker Antoin "Tony" Rezko include an internship the senator provided the son of a contributor at the request of Rezko, an Obama spokesman confirmed Saturday. John Aramanda served as an intern for Obama in 2005, said Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs. His father is Joseph Aramanda, a Rezko business associate who was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in a federal corruption case against Rezko. Aramanda has contributed $11,500 to Obama since 2000, Gibbs said.

The Democrats bemoan the high cost of healthcare and claim it is due to the greed of insurance and pharmaceutical firms, then perhaps Barrack Hussein Rezkobama can explain how the University of Chicago Hospitals can afford to pay Michelle Obama a $316,962-a-year position as vice president for community and external affairs. I guess you can't run a hospital without a VP of Community Affairs and those jobs require at least $300K+ salary. Perhaps this would be better spent on patient care! The U of C Hospitals are right in Obama's Hyde Park neighborhood, how convenient! Who got Michelle Obama the job? Did Tony Rezko pull some strings?

WAKE UP! The Democrats are left-wing socialists. Democrats like to cry about stolen elections because they are the experts on that subject- there has not been a Republican mayor of Chicago for over 80 years! That is not the will of the people, that is one party rule where pawns on bloated payrolls owe their jobs to the Democrats!
Please remember that AFSCME's endorsement came over the objections of all the western international VP's and the Secretary Tres.  I think the rank and file are more Edwards/Obamah leaning.  Problem is that our IVP's watch too much national news and think Hillary will feel she owes us
The five (in my opinion) top national issues (a.k.a. problems) are - in random order - 1) the health care crisis; 2) the war on Iraq; 3) the theft of U.S. jobs (thanks to NAFTA, WTO, and a compliant, corporately-purchased Congress; 4) under-funded public education; 5) the lack of affordable housing.

Only one presidential candidate has written and detailed programs designed to effectively resolve these national disgraces.  That person is Representative Dennis Kucinich.  What’s more, he has plans to deal with environmental/global warming problems,  publicly financed – and therefore representative – elections;  pension protection, safe work places,  Social Security, Medicare,  unfairly distributed taxation, and more….

Please note:  all the issues listed above have one common feature;  only the 90% of us who make up the working class are affected  by the laws covering them, or by  judicial  rulings affecting them.  The wealthy  don’t worry about getting medical care.  They get all they require or desire.  With few exceptions, their kids aren’t sent off to war.  Their jobs are not “out-sourced”.   Most of their children attend private schools.  They live where they please, and mortgage payments are mere blips on their financial radar screens.
And it goes on and on….

Labor has retreated from its proud heritage of  militant and activist advocacy on behalf of workers.  Since the AFL-CIO merger in 1955, labor has been on the run, thanks in large measure to proponents of business-unionism who are ideologically-challenged, conservative, and addicted to a “go along to get along”  mentality.  We went from a high of over 35%  of America’s workforce all the way down to today’s  dismal  10%.  Clearly, the policies of the chieftains of labor have been lacking.

Presidential endorsements are but one example.  Rather than stand up and endorse a person who has always championed the cause of the working class,  they instead opt to hitch their wagons  to people who they view as “possible winners”.  Talk about fence-riding!  It almost looks like they’d rather get invited to an inarguable ball  instead of  fighting for what working-America needs.

Some are heard to whine, “we can only get so much, so let’s take what they give us”.  No wonder labor is on the run!  A “negotiating” strategy such as that is doomed to fail.  Well, folks, that’s the strategy that has led labor into its current predicament.

The answer?  Recognize the truth!  Globalization is nothing more than a way for corporate shareholders to maximize their assets (and for CEOs to reap huge, gigantic .  salaries). National health care would cut into the profane profit margins of  a health care industry that views people like you and me as nothing more than a commodity.  War is profitable for them!  Under-funded public education  is designed to dumb-down  the working class so that rich kids won’t have to compete with the likes of us for good paying jobs.  It goes on and on.  Do your own research!  Don’t rely on FOX or CNN or alibi artists who purport to represent  us and who say  they care about us.  Their words are not supported by their actions.

Next, get involved.  Go to union meetings!  Offer programs and policies  rooted in working class consciousness.  Fight for them!

Recognize we have a one-party system with two wings:  Democrat and Republican.  Be real!  The GOP agenda is mean-spirited and is driven by an ideology that views working men and women as humanoids designed to serve the ones above.  With the exception of about 80 – 100  of them  (Kucinich included)  Democrats in Congress wind up screwing us too.

Forget  the GOP.  Get involved in your local Democratic Party instead.   Fight for a real people’s program that deals with all the (resolvable)  problems that threaten folks like us.
If  Party leaders or labor leaders aren’t with us they’re against us.  If they’re against us we have to vote them out of office and elect people who represent the 90%  of us who actually turn the wheels of industry.  If we do not – if you do not – the 10%  will continue to dominate the 90%  and  things will only get worse.

Help yourself.  Understand that you have more in common with workers  from anywhere in  the world than you do with four-fifths of Congress, and with far too many labor fakers who call themselves leaders.

Or do nothing.  Please understand, however, that doing nothing carries a heavy toll.  Doing nothing will  bring additional insecurity, and will sacrifice the future of your children.

Take heed of the words of Pastor Martin Niemueller:

“In Germany they first came for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.

Then they came for me —
and by that time no one was left to speak up”

The sin of silence carries a harsh punishment.
