Romney responds to Huckabee

Posted: Monday, December 31, 2007 5:53 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Erin McPike
INDEPENDENCE, IA -- After initially refusing to respond to Huckabee's attack ad bait-and-switch, Romney made the following statement outside Bill's Pizza here this afternoon:

"You know in reaction to the press conference Gov. Huckabee had today, I think that I’d note that I’m running a serious campaign, that there are serious issues that face the country at this time. I want to bring change to Washington -- that’s what my campaign is about. The press conference which Gov. Huckabee had today, I think, is confusing to the people of Iowa. On the one hand, he wants to run a positive campaign; and on the other hand, he shows a negative campaign ad and hopes that people promote it and provide it to the public through the earned media. And I think that’s a very confusing and puzzling message. With that, who wants a slice of pizza?"

Following the news that Huckabee showed an attack ad on Romney to reporters this afternoon but changed his mind on airing it in Iowa, Romney's spokesman said to inquiring reporters that the governor would not make a statement on it, that he had already given his avail for the day.

Pressed again at a stop in Manchester along his bus tour route, spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom explained that it didn't necessarily make sense for Romney to respond to Huckabee's swift shift in tactics.

But a spate of reporters traveling with Romney stormed out of the event to greet Romney after the event at the doors of the Mitt Mobile before he departed for the next stop to demand a response. "I do all the responses that Eric let's me organize," Romney said. "So if you talk to Eric, I'll be happy to chat."

Meanwhile, the national press staff had been busily shooting out e-mails panning Huckabee for his "bizarre" moment and "meltdown."

But back on the press bus, the Iowa press secretary announced that the governor was to make unscheduled stop in Independence. According to Tim Albrecht, there had been a stop planned there, but it was pulled two days before in order to free up time. There was some buzz that not all of the supporters who were going to go got word of the cancellation, and so the campaign decided to forge ahead with the stop to make sure that no one who still showed up would be disappointed.

The governor made a quick run through the restaurant and picked up a few pizzas as the press bus pulled up for the "photo op." But as some were exiting, one reporter shouted back to others at the back of the bus to bring cameras because "he's going to make a statement about Huckabee."

After he made his statement, which was less than a minute long, a man who billed himself as a former member of the Arkansas legislature and a Republican started shouting questions about abortion to Romney as he climbed back aboard the Mitt Mobile. After he shut the door, a couple of the Romney campaign staffers offered the man some pizza -- which he refused.

Mitt Romney Flip Flopping!
This guy will do anything for a vote....

Last week, Bay Windows, a Boston gay newspaper, reprinted excerpts from a letter Romney wrote to the Log Cabin Republicans in 1994, hoping to gain the group’s support in his campaign against the veteran Democratic lawmaker and Massachusetts institution.

“If we are to achieve the goals we share, we must make equality for gays and lesbians a mainstream concern,” Romney wrote. “My opponent cannot do this. I can and will.”

Romney lost that race by a wide margin, but came closer to defeating Kennedy than had any previous challenger in recent memory. Romney’s support for the gay community did not end with his loss, however, as his political aspirations dictated otherwise. At the Boston Gay Pride Parade in 2002, when he ran for governor, he and his running mate Kerry Healey distributed pink fliers stating, “Mitt and Kerry wish you a great Pride weekend.”

Mitt is the biggest phony in a whole herd of them.
Um, a little irrelevant Robert J., why don't you go to a different blog about gays and lesbians?

Now, going back to the subject here, I think Huckabee has been hiding behind the cross too long and his dishonesty is finally showing.  He played the "I'm the only Christian running" tactic only as long as he could hide it and using whisper campaigning (especially with the hidden cross ad) to use his own popular religion as the reason to vote for him over Mitt Romney and his unpopular one.  That is pure pandering to bigots.  And now, how flip-flopping can you get to first put out a TV ad ridiculing Romney for being negative and with Huckabee promising he would never do such a thing, and then flipping to go ahead and fund a negative TV ad anyway, then flopping back 5 minutes before airing it and deciding not to do it, then flipping back and saying "Well let's show it anyway, just to the media" with a secret agenda to get free press. What do you want Huckabee?  At least Romney completely admits that he flipped several years ago, not flip-flop-flip-flopped in the course of one week like yourself.
Its amazing to see how fast Huckabee is falling apart.  He says he is not running the ads because he does not want to be negative.  The fact is, he doesn't have the money to pay for all that TV time and still keep his campain going.   Huckabee is a nice guy but he is just not smart enough to be our president.   I find it absolutely startling that he is running for president and he does not have plans to fix social security or health care.  What the heck kind of a message is that.  "every one please vote for me and I promise, if you do I will think up something really good", it's almost sad.

Mitt has the brains, the plans and the money to make a real difference.

Go Mitt!!!
Romney is great! There is so much junk about him flip flopping but who cares what he thought years ago. I'm not voting about things from the past, I'm voting on the issues of today.
He is a businessman. We need someone who can lead our country to greater economic opportunities. My vote is for him and I hope he wins!
Romney is a phoney like the New Hamshire Concord said. He spent millions attakcing Huckabee and McCain now he is playing possum on trying to be negative. If this idiot wins the Republican nomination then just hand over the veto pen to Hillary
My vote is for Mr. Romney.  Huckabee and McCain's record regarding the illegal invasion and their support for these lawbreakers is disgusting.
We Love Romney

Romney allowed his office as governor to fund Gay/Lesbian SEX-ED to GRADE-SCHOOL CHILDREN as young as KINDERGARTENERS--with NO PARENTAL NOTIFICATION OR CONSENT! NO U.S. POLITICIAN SHOULD ASSUME SUCH CONTROL OVER CHILDREN/THEIR PARENTS!!

The Man Boy Love Association
Mitt Romney is using his personal wealth to try to buy this election. His latest ads are full of half truth and lies. Mike Huckabee has more moral and ethical fiber in his little finger tha Romney has in his whole body.
Romney will be in for a huge surprise and will need to be medicated. ( along with the rest of Utahs population that lead the nation in anti depressant use) Mitt claimed he saw his father march with Martin Luther King Junior in a vision. I am not sure what these people smoke but they have plenty of "visions", maybe its in the water.
I'm for Mitt.  Contrasting his views to Huckabee is what politics is all about.  Its only considered "negative" if your the candidate with a history of negative facts.  When people are informed they know what to do.  Mitt has the experience, know how, and record to help us moving forward in the right direction!
Huckabee, Just what we need, a hillbilly after 8 years of cowboy.

Romney is the only presidential candidate from either party (now that Tom Tancredo has dropped out) that will do anything about illegal immigration.  Stop the hiring and jobs and they will have to leave. NO AMNISTY under any name. Register them for farm work only during the season but they have to return to Mexico or where ever after the harvest.  Pay them the minimum wage but take out only income tax and ineligible  for social security.  Children born to illegal aliens should not be given citizenship.

After January 1, 2008 Ameican Express Credit cards are not going to be honored in California.  You have to use Mexican Express.
Huckleberry is a hypocrite.

He says we doesn't want to run negative ads then shows the media the add in hopes they show for free! Does he really think the media outlets are complete fools??

He is running on
I'm more Christian and I'm more funny. He has a horrible record and Iowans are starting to notice.

Mitt is a proven leader in business and in office he gets my vote.

Vote Mitt!!!!!!!!!!!
For all of Huckabee's talk about Romney being "desperate," Huckabee's is definitely the one showing the desperation.  He sees his lead evaporating and can't make up his mind on what will help him most politically.  This "taking the high road" stuff is a bunch of baloney.  I feel he is being very calculated on what will help him win.  Unfortunately, I think he made a terrible, even fatal, mistake with this one.  My vote is for Romney.
Romney will be our next President.
First of all, every candidate has chinks in his armor. Even the great RR was pro choice at one time, had more than one marriage and estranged children. If we are looking for the perfect candidate, he will not be found. My first choice Gingrich had baggage. Huckabee has problems with the pardons and paroles and taxes, and now he has a "new" just in time for the caucus tough immigration stance. Romney, like Regan flipped on pro choice to pro life plus has those who try to make his religion a "political" issue. Thompson has show all the dynamics of the old porch dog on Hee Haw. McCain a fine patriot tried to get us to swallow shamnesty and McCain Feingold. Guliani has the pro choice problem, marriages, and immigration.
Since Christ is not running for POTUS, we have to deal with the flaws. Some of us may have a few as well!
That said, after 56 years on this Earth, after Newt, I stand behind Romney. I do see in him character not unlike Regan. He is optimistic about America, came from a state of liberals (refined in the fire), converted to pro life, has administrative experience all over and has been the only candidate to bring up concerns about the threat of China to our economy. He obviously knows what creates jobs and economic strength first hand. He pulled out an Olympics mired in scandal and debt right after 911 and put into play anti-terrorism measures still being used today. Well, as RR said, there it is as I see it. I love a Romney/Huckabee or Romney/Gingrich ticket and strongly believe with either we can run away with the presidential election. Stay active politically as that is the only way you can bring about change.
Missouri Republican
So the new theme for Huckabee is Romney has sold his evil Mormon soul to Jesus's brother the devil? And he being above that , and presumably a sanctified  holy man,  will "not sell his soul to gain the whole world". Thanks for that Huckabee it's been about a half hour since you made me gag.
Rep or Dem.  We need to choose the best for the job.  Look at the real issues and look at a real history.  We need drastic changes however they come to pass.  Lets stop promoting this childish crap by bickering ourselves and send a real message and demand real answers.  It seems that to many of our politicians forget to answer our real questions.  Lets call them out.
I AM SEEKING A POST ELECTION SUPPORT GROUP FOLLOWING THE PRIMARY ELECTIONS. ANTI-DEPRESSANTS WILL BE THE MENU SERVED WITH ABANDON.me,jane
So Romney thinks Huckabee is confusing because he changed his mind about running an attack ad? Is Romney confused because he said he wasn't going to comment - and then did? Aren't we getting just a little childish through all this? I'm disappointed that Huckabee decided not to go through with the ads, but still think he made the right decision. Romney distorts the facts. Hopefully the people of Iowa can figure that one out.
Romney talks about the issues and the actual record of his opponents and Huckabee trys a sly approach to look clean but let the press do his dirty work. My vote is for the business man that actually has accomplished success and doesn't wear his religion on his sleeve.
Some overwhelming issues: What is up with stupid people and the houseing market? Why should we save stupid people.  Lenders should be responsible and then the person signing the papers.  Have two signatures the title company and mortgage broker.  Thats solved for them and then have the title company and the mortgagee and all is solved.  Stop throwing money at it.
Health care?  What about the middle class?  They can't even afford it because they are the ones paying most of the taxes for the lower class to get it for free.
Social Security?  If you haven't figured out that the government spends it so fast that it won't be there then come on.  Listen to Dave Ramsey. He has some good advice.  As for politicians, try and remember that us small guys need that money for our BABY BOOMERS.  Most of that generation are the reason that we even have the economy at all so lets take care of them.
The war?  You cannot be against it and be for our troops.  If you think so then you haven't made the sacrifice or know some who have.  If you are a parent and think that is what your son or daughter wanted then think again.  Even if it falls on the shoulders of our leaders for bad decisions then GOD will hold them directly responsible.  We do need them home, but it will be when we can.  We support them no matter what.  Don't be so brutal!!!
We all know that Huck is way out of his league.  He doesn't have the money, the organization, the mentality to be President.  What would he be able to change?  Prayers coming back in our schools?  I don't even think he could get that done, as he alienates other religions outside of his own.

Mitt Romney is hard-working, and a change-artist.  25 years in business, most as the Chief Financial Officer at Bain Capital.  Look what he has done at the Olympics, look at what he did in my state of MA.  He's the man for the job.  And all you bigots out there who attack him because of religion, what a bunch of bologni.  You are less tolerant of other faiths than anyone I know, so don't play your religious, crusader card.  Believe in God in your own way and don't be so intolerant of others.

Mitt ROMNEY for President!
Speaking of flip-flopping, I was was flip-flopping myself, but in the final analysis, Romney is the clear final choice. He is the only electable candidate to beat Hilary. I don't care what a few biggots say, he's a solid guy.
how embarrassing for Huck- made a complete fool of himself.  Romney never denigrated anyone's character with his ads- he just contrasted their politics and records- same thing they all do in the debates.  The barely-under-the-surface tempers of both Huck and Mccain couldn't handle it and actually attacked back- and they attacked Romney's character.  So who's really negative?

Huckabee is pathetic and has no integrity, ethics, or presidential abilities.  He would be the worst choice for president.
When will we all, as Americans, wake up and realize that all politicians are out for themselves. We, the people, no longer exists. It's like a movie about "getting rid of the people that don't matter". Get it, the majority of us do not matter!! They lie, they steal and we are the ones that are lied to and stolen from. Wake up call, vote independent. I'm changing my status for my children and grandchildren. If these weazels finally realize that "we the people" are not that stupid, they will change. We are the majority but we act like puppets on a sting. Time is running out for these idiots, Let's get some real brains in our government.
I would be proud to cast my vote for no president for the next 4 years let the beltway gridlock, with no president and probably follow suit with congressional elections as well. How about some honest substance for a change.
If Mr. Romney or Mr. Huckabee win the Republican primary, I will vote for either Hillary or Obama. I switched from being a registered Democrat to Republican, but truthfully ALL the candidates DISGUST ME!

I wish Bloomberg would run as an Independent. He would turn America's economy around in his first six months in office and he makes no bones about political allegiances and his disdain for them. He also makes no bones about the serious security problems we face in America because of the current administrations 'HOMELAND SECURITY' policies.
Huck-an-idiot said he wasn't going to negative campaign and then turns around and negative campaigns because he thinks it might get him a vote. Who's the flip flopper now?
My vote is for Romney!

This stunt can't help Huckabee: if you like him, you may still like him, but you might also begin to question his integrity.  If you don't like him, you just look at this as blatant hypocrisy.  All this can do is peel away some of his support, not convert anyone to his candidacy.  In one article on this tactic, the reporter said that Huckabee's staffers admitted it was a result of Huckabee losing patience with the effectiveness of Romney's ads.  Huckabee does not seem to be thinking clearly in attempting this kind of maneuver, but maybe he feels he has no choice but to take the gamble due to lack of money and manpower.
Huckabee is a joke! He makes up fake answers regarding Foreign Policy and makes false statements on where his research came from. (See blog on MSNBC.com) If you compare Mitt Romney's resume to Huckabee's, there is no comparison! Romney all the way!
Awe, and they call Romney a flip-flopper! LOL

Honestly, I think Huckabee didn't have the money to run the ad, instead he was hoping the media would do his dirty work and walk away looking like the good preacher.

Huckabee is a religious bigot.
Mitt is such a slimeball politician.  They are all bad but he takes the cake.  He has no values, he just says what he thinks his audience wants to hear and what he thinks it will take to win the campaign at hand.
Irregardless of who wins, repubican or demacrat. Not one of them is going to do any thing about the illegal aliens. The truth is all of politicians are linning there pockets at our expence.they could care less what we the public thinks. They know we are not going to get involved! We are just going to wait for someone else to do it so we don't have to get involved. The mexican president incourages the illegals to cross the border, what does any one in Washington say to him.If the illegals stop coming or start returning out of the U.S.A. it will be up to the people. We will have to demand our politicians get off their fat butts or get a different line of work! Here in Arkansas most illegals make the same money as do the resident citizens of Arkansas.I beleive Huckabee is the lesser of all the evils running for president,Buthe did nothing to discourge the illegals froming to thi over taxed and relitive poor state. But he is still the lesser evil of them all who as of today are running for president......GOD help America least we fall by the way.And that is what is happening to us.people need to open their eyes and require America be for Americans first............
Romney speaks of bringing change to Washington.  What change?  He supports the ongoing, never-ending war in Iraq.  He's mentioned bombing Iran.  He favors permanent tax cuts for the wealthy. Just like Bush, he has no plan for immigration enforcement (instead of going after employers of illegal immigrants, Bush and his administration have looked the other way.)  He thinks the only good U.S. citizens are those who are religious.  His staff includes at least one former Blackwater executive.  Change??  The only change he would bring to Washington is a different colored suit and a little darker hair dye.  His is a campaign of smoke and mirrors.  This crowd of presidential wannabees is nothing but recycled Bush, Ron Paul excepted.
Huckabee is a phony and anyone who can't see right through his false claim to be a Christian is not one themselves.
I'm calling Romney "Slick Mitt" because there's not a core value that hasn't slid off his character.
The country is a mess. Mitt Romney is the right person to clean up this mess. I just feel bad about it.  Anyway, he is capable of reversing worst situation to the best if not perfect. He demonstrated it like in the Olympics at Salt Lake City.
Mike Huckabee should examine his self about honesty or maybe he just don't understand what is dihonesty means is.
I'll be voting for the 1st time for president (I voted once at local elections), my wife and I just became US citizens now, one can be excused i think, for being quite confused about our electoral process and a lot of these candidates aren't helping my/their cause by flip flopping. I Don't know who to vote for. Really. And the crazy thing is that, up until recently i thought I had my mind made up on who to vote for!
Huckabee can't really get his act together.  I am really disgusted with his smear tactics of I am more a Christian than any of the other candidates.  How come the news agencies don't write about the total melt down of this guy in only one week?
Here is the reason for those that can reason.  The news media is extremely liberal.  Yes, very liberal, if somehow you have not caught on to that lately.  They want to promote Huckabee because he would be destroyed in any reasonable match up.  He does not have much education.  He is not very organized and he can't think on his feet.  They want him to win so that the Republican primary is a slugfest and in the end the Democrats have an edge against someone they know they can easily defeat.
At least the press is more honest about promoting McCain.   He matches up as a more liberal candidate that the Democrats think they can manipulate more along their way of thinking.
It has become obvious to me that Mitt is the only logical choice if you want a true balancing of the budget and change in Washington.
Romney's got my vote.
GO Mitt!
All Politicians are phony! so get real...Goto a different blog on that one as well.
The reality is the huckabee, a baptist, could careless if he is phony or gay. He would sell his soul out like the rest of them.
Yes, we do a need a strong leader with business skills etc.
Never cared for Mccain like most. He is old and lost touch of what we need in our generation.

My next pick would be Clinton. So if Mitt don't make it then I'm voting Clinton. I'm converting alot of GOP that way if Mitt don't make it.
She does have a plan. Just don't care for her marxist ways and slant on things most of the time. She doesn't flip flop enough either.
We need somebody that can BRING CHANGE to washington. That means you will be flip flopping in order to get anthing done in Congress.
Flip floppers change and are flexible. Let;s get it strait. They have integrity. It is the system they are in that is dishonest.
Gotta love these blog boards.
what thing I can tell you is Mitt has saved alot of organizations. He has the tools.
What we need is a real congress. Less worried about the President of the US.
All the scandelous GOP and DEMS. They are selling out our country for greed like every other corporate raider. Not enough good ones in their to balance out the bogus bread.
The Fakes...Frauds too.
All I have to say is I'm glad I'm not a politician.

Consumers(media) are even worse in their false reporting and lies. Do anything to make a buck and attract attention.

CHow!
Lets see, 1033 pardons.  1033 X 12 (12,396) Jurors who waisted at least 3 days of there time, 1033/2 (516) prosecuting attorneys that wasted 3 weeks of their time, 1033 X 4 (4132) officers of the court who waisted 3 days of their time. 1033 X 3 (2066) investigators, crime lab personnel, uniformed personel who waisted 3 weeks of their time.  If I were part of the Arkansas justice system, I would have been very discouraged.  Why should I even try, the governor is going to set them free as soon as they accept Jesus.

I think the Mike Huckabee needs to start explaining and stop accusing others.  My favorite line on a recent interview was his comment about inflating the resume.  I seem to recall him doing a bit of explaining about his theology "degree."  Show us the facts, Huckabee, and then we may start believing you over someone who again and again has been successful in everything he has done and done it with honor.  Huckabee has not shown honor to his competitors, his constituents nor his religion in the irresponsible and shameful way he has manipulated the Evangelicals and tried to cash in on his beliefs rather than base his decisions upon them.  He is sadly right when he says that history will be made, but the history is, that this type of manipulation of Christians will never pay off
Romney gave out free pizza to people attacking him, now everybody will be attacking him for free Pizza.

But as a Canadian I can tell you the Clinton's come to Canada especially Bill and runs down the USA, he is an embarassment to your country.

Mitt Romney is too passionate about America to run it down.

I agree its time for change, Bush was the right man for the war on terror but as the war winds down, we need a new man for new times.
Mitt Romney

Huckabee and McCain are the wanna bees, but move over little doggies cause the big dog is moving in.

Go Mitt Go

The WHALES (White Homosexual And Liberal Elites) will continue to be Al Gores biggest fan as he address their conferences and says we need more gays in Government.  Hillary pictures with gay university students makes me wonder if she knows why kids go to school.  She makes it sound like she knew everything that was going on in the white house, did she know Bill lied under oath before we did?
The Hill-Billys have embarassed America enough.
The political stunt Huckabee with his Advertisment is a non starter with me.

Personally me and my cat are warming up to Mitt Romney he is a likeable person and his wife is nice too.
