Romney responds to Huckabee

Posted: Monday, December 31, 2007 5:53 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Erin McPike
INDEPENDENCE, IA -- After initially refusing to respond to Huckabee's attack ad bait-and-switch, Romney made the following statement outside Bill's Pizza here this afternoon:

"You know in reaction to the press conference Gov. Huckabee had today, I think that I’d note that I’m running a serious campaign, that there are serious issues that face the country at this time. I want to bring change to Washington -- that’s what my campaign is about. The press conference which Gov. Huckabee had today, I think, is confusing to the people of Iowa. On the one hand, he wants to run a positive campaign; and on the other hand, he shows a negative campaign ad and hopes that people promote it and provide it to the public through the earned media. And I think that’s a very confusing and puzzling message. With that, who wants a slice of pizza?"

Following the news that Huckabee showed an attack ad on Romney to reporters this afternoon but changed his mind on airing it in Iowa, Romney's spokesman said to inquiring reporters that the governor would not make a statement on it, that he had already given his avail for the day.

Pressed again at a stop in Manchester along his bus tour route, spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom explained that it didn't necessarily make sense for Romney to respond to Huckabee's swift shift in tactics.

But a spate of reporters traveling with Romney stormed out of the event to greet Romney after the event at the doors of the Mitt Mobile before he departed for the next stop to demand a response. "I do all the responses that Eric let's me organize," Romney said. "So if you talk to Eric, I'll be happy to chat."

Meanwhile, the national press staff had been busily shooting out e-mails panning Huckabee for his "bizarre" moment and "meltdown."

But back on the press bus, the Iowa press secretary announced that the governor was to make unscheduled stop in Independence. According to Tim Albrecht, there had been a stop planned there, but it was pulled two days before in order to free up time. There was some buzz that not all of the supporters who were going to go got word of the cancellation, and so the campaign decided to forge ahead with the stop to make sure that no one who still showed up would be disappointed.

The governor made a quick run through the restaurant and picked up a few pizzas as the press bus pulled up for the "photo op." But as some were exiting, one reporter shouted back to others at the back of the bus to bring cameras because "he's going to make a statement about Huckabee."

After he made his statement, which was less than a minute long, a man who billed himself as a former member of the Arkansas legislature and a Republican started shouting questions about abortion to Romney as he climbed back aboard the Mitt Mobile. After he shut the door, a couple of the Romney campaign staffers offered the man some pizza -- which he refused.

Go Romney, we dont need candidates weak on protecting out borders.  Get lost McCain and Hucka-phonee.
Although the press calls it negative, Romney's ads are open and direct.  Examine the data to see if his statments are true.  I prefer open politics to subtle jabs such as have come from Huckabee's camp.  Addionaly, we need good decision makers.  Look at the track record/resume of all the candidates....past performance is the best indicator of the future.  We should have done a better job of this 8 years ago.
\\Mitt brings me Hope. He is a man of integrity and intelligence with no baggage or anything hiding in the closet. A wonderful business man, father, husband and just a great person.  I think I would feel a sense of peace if he were leading our country.
I see Romney as the clear choice.  Let's be wise about this big decision of who we support for President.  The founding fathers and past generations of patriots put this into our hands and trusted us to make good decisions.  It's our turn to take a stand for one of these candidates.  Let's keep America strong and moving forward.  Iowa and beyond: Please go to the polls and vote for Romney.  Be a patriot and arrange your schedule and prepare for the weather, etc.  Your vote is important!  Thank you.
Des Moines Register Poll a few hours ago shows....

Huckabee 32%
Romney   26%
+/- 3.5%

And Huckabee is back in the lead in the RCP average.

The press is portraying this as a meltdown on Huckabee's part. But for all of his verbal slips last week and Romney's attack ads, and the fact that Romney has spent 7 million dollars in Iowa...Huckabee is still taking Romney to the 15th round and may very well beat him. Romney MIGHT squeak this out, but it will be close...and Huckabee will challenge him again in South Carolina anyway. If Romney loses Iowa by 5% or more, it can be seen as nothing short of an abject failure.

Another wildcard coming Romney's way is Michael Bloomberg. Bloomberg is strongly considering a run as an Independent. He is fiscally conservative and socially liberal, and would strip away ALOT of "Wall Street" fiscal conservatives now holding their noses behind Romney should he declare before Super Tuesday. And Michael Bloomberg can buy Romney 10 times over.

So the arrogant tone that Romney supporters are displaying here puzzles me when you consider the fact that Romney is in trouble in New Hampshire against McCain, will fair much worse in Southern states against Huckabee, and is absolute toast with fiscal conservatives should Bloomberg jump in.

Pizza anyone???
I guess that no one on earth ever changed their mind or opinion on anything? That is why the flip-flop theory doesn't fly...you have done it and so has everyone else.
Mitt Romney has a clear vision of what America should be, just like the framers of this great nation. Read his "Faith in America"
speech given from the Bush library...truer words have never been spoken.
By the way Chuck - Romney is the ONLY candidate that can beat Hillary, if she gets the nod. The libs are scared to death of him because they will not be successful with negative ads, which is all they know how to do...he's too clean and answers questions directly. Ever heard a lib REALLY ANSWER a question...think about it.
Does anybody else think that this move is completely bizarre?

You know, when this story came out I was tempted to say something really nasty about Gov. Huckabee, but then I decided not to.

I was going to say that Huckabust's an intellectually lightweight, transparently insidious, hypocritical sleazeball.

But, I wont.
judging by his I would say the press is looking for an excuse to back Romney,Huckabee's "meltdown" is clever but a bit Ringling Brothers. the problem is honesty, neither side is being entirely honest in this,I still see total honesty nowhere but with McCain like it or not he states his beliefs and does not play games if he sucked up to the party he may have beaten Bush the first time around.

Huckabee is a flat out liberal EXCEPT on abortion and gun rights.  If it were not for those two issues, he may as well be running for the democratic nomination.

Romney is a flip flopping, two faced liar.  (But he gets my mom's vote because he "is SO good looking!")

McCain voted against the Bush tax cuts, for amnesty for illegals, and is author of McCain Feingold which is perhaps the WORST peice of legislation in my lifetime.

Rudy is even worse than Huckabee because at least Huck has two good issues under his belt.  He doesn't care about freedom, just safety.

Fred is, well, just a guy rocking on his porch sipping lemonade waiting for either the President or Paul Harvey gig to open up.

Guess all that means I will be voting for Ron Paul, true conservative, true constitutionalist, true Patriot.
The dimented dose of RJ from SLC keeps coming. Nice to see he has mastered the cut & paste from anti-mormon/anti-Romney cites to dot these political blogs.

Anyone curious what Jimmy Carter said of the LDS? If so, read on you will definately find it interesting. If not, skip this post and go to the next one.

In the newly released "Presidents and Prophets" on P. 338 then Utah Senator, Jake Garn, is relating to then President Carter some history about the LDS Church. Towards the beginning of the 2nd full paragraph - Carter - "Was it true that they drove your people our of Missouri?" asked the President. "Yes," replied the LDS senator. "In fact, the governor of Missouri issued an extermination order to drive us from the state. Being driven from state to state is how we ended up in Utah." Carter shook his head in sincere disgust. "That's unbelievable. That's difficult to believe that it could happen in a country founded on religious freedom," he said. "I will never, ever understand how in the United States of America that could ever happen." Garn said that the President remarked how much he appreciated people who were religious regardless of which faith and that it was good for the coutnry to have religious people. On one occasion when Latter-day Saints were being attacked as not being a Christian religion, former President Carter came to their defense. (caps added for emphasis) HE (PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER) DECLARED THAT MORMONS WERE CHRISTIANS AND ANY FELLOW SOUTHERN BAPTISTS WHO THOUGHT OTHERWISE WERE "PHARISEES."

I wonder what Huckabee would say about that (asked honestly, not with sarcasm or judgement).
Romney trumps!
Flip-flopping used to be called adapting to change.Isn't that a sign of intelligence? I think that we, as Americans, have seen and suffered enough under a President who refuses to accept reality or change direction in the face of unresolvable circumstances. Hooray for you, Mr. Romney, your critics have bombarded you with every sleazy negative approach-from berating your religious beliefs to mocking your reconsideration of political positions. As a non-Morman, I respect a rational man with character.
Romney is not phony and he is not negative. He has pointed out serious deficiencies in the voting records and ideas of his competitors. How else would we know how a person will govern if he/she is elected to office? I too am amazed at Huckabee's implosion, 2nd only to Hillary's.
While he certainly has not be active campaigning in Iowa, what about John McCain?  A true American patriot who has proven his willingness not to flip flop for votes. His position on immigration is pragmatic attempting to build consensus rather than gridlock.   The man is honorable and trustworthy.  We know where he stands unlike other candidates.
ROMMNEY MUST HAVE GOT SOME DEMOCRATS DRUGS, HE HALLUNCIATES ABOUT MARTIN LUTHER KING, AND ALL THESE OTHER LIES.  HAVING A LOT OF MONEY TO BUY LIAR ADS IS NOT A PREQUISITE FOR PRESIDENT.  MAYBE HUCKABEE WILL SAVE HIM AFTER HE KICKS HIS BUTT.  I WONDER IF HE MARCHED WITH BRIGHAM YOUNG ALSO LMAO.
DAVID ANDERS PHARR,TX. - you're hate filled speech is getting pretty tiresom. Get a life please.
Romney made his millions, with his 'buy-out firm.'

An 'investment firm' goes in and invests to help get a company back on its feet/higher up in the corporate food-chain. 'Buy-out firms,' "if you will"/Romney's newest over-used cliche'/ cripple a company, forcing its stock prices to fall, then buy up the stock until they own controlling interest, just to turn around and sell the company, often to foreign interests, as high as the market allows, creating a hefty profit for themselves at the expense of lost jobs/lost wages for thousands of Americans.

If you buy Romney calling his "buy-out firm" an "investment firm" he has more "Romney-tales" he'll sell you, too. It will only cost you 'America as we know it' for future generations.

Just because Romney can make a buck in the business world does NOT add up to being a leader of government. PLEASE check out Romney's Terrible Record as Massachusetts' governor. If Romney could NOT manage a small state, he sure CAN'T manage 50 states and the MYRIAD urgent PROBLEMS immediately facing the next president.

For those of you who don't know by now, during Romney's 4 years a governor, Massacusetts:

Was the ONLY STATE to post ZERO GAIN in EMPLOYEED RESIDENTS

Was 3RD from the BOTTOM in CREATING NEW JOBS (would've been 2ND from the BOTTOM but Louisiana was destroyed by Katrina)

Massachusetts' median home price ROSE 95% !! (40% for the nation for the same period)

222,000 !! MORE residents moved OUT of the fair state than moved in, during Romney's 4 years--the ONLY thing that kept MA's unemployment rates down.
(Center for Market Studies, Northwestern University, Boston Globe, 07/29/07).

Romney allowed his office to fund:

Gay/Lesbian SEX-ED--WITHOUT PARENTAL CONSENT OR NOTIFICATION--for Grade School children AS YOUNG AS KINDERGARTEN.
Again, Romney didn't have to fund this, but he did.

'Dances' for CHILDREN AS YOUNG AS 12 to 'meet up' with ADULT Gays/Lesbians/Transgenders/Bi-Sexuals.
Romney didn't have to fund these, but he did.

CHILDREN'S gay-pride-type parades where ADULT gays/lesbians... off the streets WERE ALLOWED TO JOIN IN, in full regalia.
Romney didn't have to do this, but he did.

BE SURE to check out http://www.massresistance.org
This is a Massachusetts Conservative group.
Click on "The Romney Deception" and other links down the pages for indepth, documented report of 'Romney's Reign' over Massachusetts.

HOW do Romney's business practices make a STRONGER AMERICA for the thousands of Americans who lose their jobs or are forced to take cuts in pay because of Romney's 'forced buy-outs' ??

HOW does Massachusetts' failing record during Romney-years recommend him for BUILDING A STRONGER AMERICAN ECONOMY ??

WHO thinks Romney's funding of 'gay/lesbian children's programs' helped raise FAMILY VALUES for THOSE American families, THOSE American children ??

If Romney canNOT maintain his composure when people just ask him questions regarding the religion HE BROUGHT into his campaign--NOT forthright with American voters in his religious claims (as in other 'Romney-claims'), without becoming hot under the collar, wound tight-ready to leave the room, impatient, rude, a vile name-caller, He SURE WON'T be able to hold up under the BIG-DOG Purposeful insults in the BIG-BOY International Political arena. THEY SURE WON'T care if Romney pouts or turns red in the face. Romney won't be able to hide behind the word 'religion' when he is being hounded and REALLY-persecuted by WORLD-media for Every political AND personal, religious, move he makes/AND the moves of his family--their good, never good enough and their bad, very bad. How often will America have to be embarrassed by Romney swinging his arms around stammering, red-faced, when THE WORLD doesn't see things his way? He WON'T be able vaunt, or to hide behind his RELIGION then, which has served him so well during his campaign. The WORLD won't care about Romney's religion, REGARDLESS the many LDS prophecies about LDS taking over the world.

Mike Huckabee was elected 4 TIMES to serve his state. And he left Arkansas in BETTER shape, for his time served. Instead of a long list of American companies he as shut down or sold out to foreign interests, he (and his wife) have a very long list of serving their community, their state--doing good simply for the sake of doing good.

John McCain also has a very long, very honorable, resume' of service to his country.

Think, America. This is the most important American presidential election in generations. Our next president MUST hit the ground running, able and ready to hold up Under Extreme Pressures on the home-front AND the international stage. We need to choose someone with Exceptional past governmental experience who is Level-Headed, who holds up under fire, who has Proven to NOT be a fickle-fly-by-night-power-monger, whose WORD withstands harsh scrutiny, who has already Proven to put America First. This is NOT Willard Mitt Romney.
KLARPH, Pontiac IL - "Romney is not phony and he is not negative. He has pointed out serious deficiencies in the voting records and ideas of his competitors. How else would we know how a person will govern if he/she is elected to office?"

Answer...how about by standing on your OWN record and letting voters do their own research about your opponents. This, however, assumes that the candidate has a record that is consistent and that he or she can actually defend.

Anyone who thinks that Mitt Romney's scorched earth approach to his opponents will work in the long run is just kidding themselves. And even if Huckabee and McCain pass from the scene thanks to Mitt's 250M bank account, be advised that Michael Bloomberg is right around the corner and he spent 160M just running for Mayor of NYC.

Once Bloomberg, who is worth 5 Billion dollars, starts spending the chump-change needed to eclipse Romney then its all over for Mitt because his message is not one of any conviction, just what needs to be said at the time and the best money can buy....for now. If Bloomberg does jump in, and it certainly looks like he will...Mitt Romney will be steam-rolled at his own game, and his career in presidential politics will be over.

His attacks on Huckabee, McCain and Giuliani will be remembered by those elements of the Republican Party, his friends at FoxNews will jump ship on him being the weasels that they are, and he will have no base left outside of the borders of Utah. His electability goes to absolute zero.
Finally R.J. AKA Robert lets us in on why he spews so much venom on these blogs. You never say who you for, and I could not figure out why all the hate. OK so Mitt is soft on gay marriage, I get it. That issue does not have enough popular support to fly right now when put to a vote. I think Mitt has done well on the issue in the past. When elected he vote should represent the those who elected him not simley his own  view. When in Boston he  voted in support of the majority view. Now he would need to reflect the views of a nation not Massachusetts. There is a myth out there that elected official need to vote thier conscience, they are elected to represent the majority that put them there. The dems only give you lip service on the issue to get your money anyway.  Tina, Huck never decided not to run the ad, it was never his intention. His only intent was to get it done for free by calling a press conference to play it to reporters. I'm sure you know that anyway. Huck has very flawed integrity if he would have us believe that you show your high morals by showing how you would have been nasty for a press conference. It is a classic judas kiss play. I'm sure Huck knows that story. Kira, I may need to change my screen name, as you are the most sane poster on here.
To Ann, Iowa......Do you feel better...after all of what you said I hope so. Hehehehe I'm voting for Romney.
Robert from Salt Lake City or RJ from Utah or Robert J from Salt Lake City or whoever you feel like calling yourself this time, please resign yourself to relevant issues of the campaign.  Mormon bashing is so out of vogue these days and, basically, no one really cares what the candidates believe in their personal lives.  If they were campaigning to become your pastor, your personal biases about such things would be relevant.  But, you feel free to heap the manure around the base of the tree; it is growing well thanks to people like you.
More Flip Flopping from Mitt Romney

How Gov. Mitt Romney started same-sex “marriage” in Massachusetts - despite what he says now!
Same-sex "marriage" is still NOT legal in Massachusetts, and was NOT created by the Supreme Judicial Court's Goodridge ruling.

Timeline documents Mitt Romney's role in creating same-sex "marriages."

In fact, it was Governor Mitt Romney who was ultimately responsible for same-sex "marriages" taking place. The Supreme Judicial Court only issued an opinion and advised the Legislature to act (which it never did). Even the Court acknowledged that it had no power to change the law.

Governor Romney created these "marriages" through an unconstitutional and illegal directive to his Department of Public Health (to print new "marriage" licenses), and through his legal counsel threatened to fire any Town Clerk or Justice of the Peace who failed to implement the (non-existent) "new law". He was not required by any constitutional mandate to do these things. On the contrary, his actions clearly violated his oath to uphold the laws of Massachusetts.
Mitt Romney handled the Huckabee "Meltdown" just like he should have. Besides, just because a dog is barking doesn't mean that he has anything important to say. Romney is going to not only win in IA, but NH, and MI! Romney will be America's next President elect! He is a man of character, and he has been able to combat all of the attacks and still continues to gain strength in the national polls. He has my vote and I am looking forward to a new direction in Washington! GO ROMNEY!!!
sane, I'm flattered :)
McCain and Hillary belong to the same party, are the same in personality, and are mean as the junk yard dog.  McCain's soft spoken words are not this man.  Those who know him say Mc is known for railing, screaming, pounding, and bullying in his decision making and don't anger him because he is worse. AND Huckabee belongs in the Liberal Party.  Who could be the next VP? Romney could be the President.  Just watching the Mc and Huck attack Romney is not what we look for in a president. Romney is in for a serious beating from these two calm but "inner seething wannabe" bullies.  Luck to Romney - he will need it!
