Poll: Clinton, McCain lead in NH

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
With exactly a week to go until New Hampshire, McCain has pulled ahead of Romney and Clinton has opened back up a double-digit lead in New Hampshire, according to a 7News/Suffolk University poll.

McCain gained 12 points since a month ago in the same survey to vault ahead of Romney 31%-25%. Romney had led in the December Suffolk poll 31%-19% over McCain. Giuliani is third with 14%, a three-point drop from 17%.

A month ago, Clinton led Obama by 7 points (33%-26%), but now the poll shows her with a whopping 36%-22% lead. Apparently, Clinton has peeled away some of those undecideds from a month ago as that number dropped from 19% to just 12% this month. Edwards comes in third with 14%. (He had 15% in December.)

The Republican numbers: McCain 31%, Romney 25%, Giuliani 14%, Huckabee 9%.

The Democratic numbers: Clinton 36%, Obama 22%, Edwards 14%.

The poll was conducted from Dec. 27 to Dec. 31 and has a margin of error for each party subsample of 300 respondents of +/- 5.65%.

Several other polls have shown a closing between McCain and Romney as well as Clinton and Obama in the Granite State.

“This poll kicks off a series of daily New Hampshire tracking polls to be conducted by 7NEWS/Suffolk University,” according to a release made available to NBC News. “Each poll will consider 250 likely Democratic and Republican primary voters statewide each day.  A two-day rolling average of 500 Democrats and 500 Republicans will be reported every morning at 6:30 a.m. on ‘7NEWS Today in New England.’”

lol

Why do I not believe this poll? I dunno! :)
Clinton opened a double digit lead in Iowa last week too. What happened to that lead?
I used to respect John McCain until I saw his latest campaign ad:http://thepage.time.com/2008/01/01/mccain-media-darling-again-plays-terror-card-against-romney/
CAN'T ANYONE BE TRUTHFUL ANYMORE?  I AM INCENSED AND INSULTED TO THINK THAT THE BRAIN-DEAD MEDIA THINKS THAT "WE THE PEOPLE" ARE BUYING INTO THIS LIBERAL GARBAGE!!!  GET A LIFE WHILE YOU CAN OR YOU MAY BE GETTING ANOTHER COUNTRY RUNNING THINGS IF THERE IS ANYTHING LEFT!!!
Here we go again  Cut out the Polls Your are discouraging voters and completley eliminating other canadates because the are not as popular or have the big pay off bucks from the interest groups..I am and independent and havent even decided yet Hopefully someone else may come into the picture, Im not set on any of these rich long time politicians who keep prominsing the same and giving ous nothing.....The press loves it because they get there money and there popular recognition from all the politics...If the majority of the people accept the way things are now you will get  4 more yrs of the same...Knock off the polls and lets see what happens....wont be done you wont get your recognition......Fed up
You mean the McCain-Feingold, help Sen. Kennedy try to get anmesty for illegal immigrants, Gang of 14, Keating 5, oppose Bush’s tax cuts, questionable mental stability John McCain?
Not surprising.  McCain is on a roll here in NH.  We've finally worked out that Romney is a fake while McCain offers something authentic and honest, even if we don't always agree.
Clinton opened a double digit lead in Iowa last week too. What happened to that lead? Dean

Dear Dean - Hillary has held a double digit lead over Obama in teh national polls since January - why haven't those numbers changes?
This is an outlier !!
(Paid for by Mark Penn ?)

It must be the same pollsters who decided Hillary was ahead by 14% in Iowa

Was it a 'push poll' ?

Obama/Edwards '08
Bet Chris Matthews will not report Hillary's 14% NH lead on Hardball.
THANK GOD HUCKABEE is doing poor in this state. It would bring the wrong message if these liberal gay nuts, that don't prosecute child molesters, liked him.  This is a good state for the perverted Clintons
WHO CARES ABOUT NEW HAMPSHIRE, THESE PEOPLE ARE A DISGRACE TO AMERICA.
None of these media polls convince me of what will actually happen---I think the media think much more of themselves  and their predictions than the public that will do the voting.McCain and Romney are too much like Bush----love those wars and want to pull more of our americans into their military---I will give mccain the guts to have his child in the military---but romney and his pampered sons make me gag----his sons serving this country by getting him elected is one the most insulting remarks ever made by someone that wants to be c o c.He insulted our troops and their families by this insensitive remark. How can he be trusted with those 2 blabbering mouths he has.Flip-flop is too mild a description for this a--hole.
Are you serious???  McCain is a mean-spirited, cranky old man who is trying to live off his past.  My dad is a well-decorated Vietnam vet - but that isn't enough qualification to elect him to office.
John McCain has no chance nationwide - or to win the election if he went against one of the top 3 democrats.  I'm not wasting my vote on someone as devisive as he would be.
McCain's best days are WAY behind him... We'll be wasting our vote AND making our state look ridiculous if we vote for this angry old man and his confusing idea on immigration.
People tend to forget how old and tired McCain is-he'll be 72 by election time; that's older than Reagan, and  face lifts don't help his failing memory. I don't think we want yet another elderly puppet who can't remember if he supports birth control or not.
McCain will say or do anything to become president because like Nixon he "will win the war". When asked if he would accept help from Karl Rove who circulated stories about him collaborating with the North Vietnamese for better treatment his comment was "I m a forgiving man". So if he becomes president be ready for four more years of "We've turned the corner in Iraq and we must fight them over there or they will come over here". Bush has turned the corner so many times it made him dizzy.
Women, a vote for Hillary is a vote for yourself and your daughters. The glass ceiling must be broken and the time is now. If not now it might be another decade or two, don't wait for our time is now! Hillary '08 President, a woman president, caucus for her, go to your primaries and vote for her, our time to wait and be second class is over, our time is now!
I'm so sick of polls and politicians that go negative and lie to the American people.  When are we going to stop this archaic process of electing presidents?

Huckabee and Romney are both liars and are no better then Hilary.  Obama is concerned about making payments on his $1.6 MILLION dollar home in Chicago, yea his wife shops at Target?

I'm voting for FRED THOMPSON... HE may not be perfect but he's honest and a real REPUBLICAN.... WAKE UP AMERICA!!!

Who is realy ahead and who is going to win Iowa is still up for grabs. So why all the polls? The folks in Iowa will change thier mind right down to the night of caucus. The situation is fluid and it is quite evident with the see saw lead of the top tier candidates.
With all due respect to Mr.Obama I think he is in over his head. I am african-american voter who has been voting democrat since the age of 18, and I'm not voting for him. He is a rookie in a veteran's game. and we need now, more than ever, a veteran politican (democrat or republican) to get us out of this mess. I will vote for Hillary. However, If he sealed the democratic nomination our best hope for getting us out of this mess will be Rudy Guiliani.
and I will be voting for Mr. Guiliani
Chris and Tim (mr. Disgusting and mr. Devious) ARE drowning in their tears as OBAMA is down on this poll. As I stated before the brave and proud laugh last. OBAMA is a pipe dream. Regards from a Polish American, Roman Catholic who migrated from the coal fields of Pennslyvania to Chicago to Alaska. Been many times as a delegate to Democratic National Conventions. Smile mr. Disgusting and mr. Devious ........Please have mr. Sourman  your frequent guest on Heartball report this.
Ahhhh A new year!

Kind of like a football game......

Clinton comes in as the number one seed.....
She slips and turns and screws up and now her lead has dwindled.....
Edwards is trying to go to a run and shoot offense...
He is gaining....
Obama is going to a "three yards and a cloud of dust" offense....

It is back and forth....
there is two minutes left in the game....
Who will have the gumption to pull ahead?
McCain 08!
Csh from Illinois - You are very smart.  I agree with all of your posts and also George Williams from Mn.
You are very right but please do not think of voting for Rudy.  There are 3 candidates that can harm our country if they should be elected, Obama, Huckabee and
Guiliani.  Obama and Huckabee are incapable and inexperienced and Guiliani is a crook with a lot of baggage what with all of the women, lying and cheating in his life.
I am a Democrat and I support Hilary however I could live with some of the others but not those 3 guys. Bloomberg has said he would get in if Huckabee, Obama or Edwards were to be nominated.  Don't know much about him but he also indicated that he would pick Chuck Hagel, Senator from Neb. for running mate.  Though Chuck has been a Repub, he has been against the war and has opposed Bush on many issues and he is very seasoned,  so I feel he is very smart and would be good for our country.
I appreciate folks such as you two are that have some sense.  I suspect there are many millions more like you and I here in our country than those other people who post obscene and obnoxious comments here and on other blogs.
God bless our country and God Bless Bill and Hilary Clinton.  They are both Christians.
SEATOR HILLARY CLINTON IS GOING TO MAKE A GREAT PRESIDENT.
Hey Concerned Citizen from Ioww....Yeah right from Iowa. Do the clintons pay you staffers to do this post??? LOL hillarious. Nice try though

Obama, Edwards , Ron Paul, Dodd, Biden are only ones I would consider. They may ont have all the answers, but at least they wont claim to like your candidate...pending on who they are talking to LOL
We have to ask ourselves: what difference does it make who the President is? Does a President really change the direction of America, and if so how? How would our domestic and foreign policies look differently under each candidate as President? What personal qualities ill the next President need to successfully implement change?

New Hampshire the 'LIVE FREE OR DIE' state supporting candidates(HRC & JRE) offering them MANDATED health insurance like the one left by Mitt Romney in Massachusetts(yea riiiight).
Did I read that right. They poll 250 people? Are you sure those numbers weren't switched with ARG. LOL
Hillary is the only candidate with the vision and the strength to take our country in a new and better direction. As a woman, she cares about our needs and about the lives of our sons and daughters in the military. She has enough experience to lead our great nation back to being a superpower, and she did a helluva lot more than "drink tea with ambassadors" as Obama shamefully and incorrectly stated...Hillary will proudly serve as our First Woman President!!!!
A vote for a flip flopper like mitt romney is a vote for clinton they have to much garbage on mitt romney if you are a strong republican we need to get someone that is elect able.
Gabe from Las Vegas.  Glad there aren't many people such as you around to vote in elections.  You probably don't vote either, just make a lot of noise.
Biden,Dodd and Edwards would be alright too with me but not Obama and not Ron Paul.  Obama is really scary.
I am told that Louis Farracon is tied to his church the whatever United Church of Christ name that Obama claims to be a member of.  Obama is just plain dangerous and wait and see he will not be the Democratic nominee.  Too many people in this country with clout and judgement to let that happen.  I too would rather see a Republican in office, not just any Republican but one such as Romney even though he is a Mormon, than
Obama who has Muslim roots.  Romney at least is seasoned and proven politcally and Obama is a "Novice" just out of the Illinois Senate with lots of questions and baggage.
As I said Obama, Huckabee and Guiliani are dangerous,
all of them, however Ron Paul, Kucinich and Gravel are
really not even qualified to be running and none have any kind of chance of winning.  I doubt Huckabee and Guiliani do either but Obama has some possibility and that is way too scary.
Once Obama wins in Iowa, he will gain ten points in NH and this will be coupled with not only a decay in support for HRC but a further migration of indies (who want to participate in a 'sizzler') to vote in the Democratic primary.  Obama will win Iowa with 38% and NH with 40%.  S.C. will be close to 45% for Obama.  Those are my predictions.
Obama '08
Like Obama, when polls are favor him, they will say first read is great, when polls are low, they will say why they need to put an article like this.
Hillary's supporters back her when polls are low, and back her when polls are high. This site is considered Obama's because 24/7 there will be "attack" take place to those don't agree with or don't plan to vote Obama. I 'd rather they comment with logic, not the languages hurting people.

Concerned Citizen, IA,
I totally agree ! But the sad reality is, so far, including some young voters, college students, are so fooled and fed by these 3 and believe what they said now are always what they said in the past. The president job is not just making some speech, throw some lines. These 2 did not go through any "storms""thouderstors". Bloomberg is sharp to notice that, especially in Iowa. Like someone mentioned in a different blog, even insiders know Obama don't have a chance facing Republicans. Well, to me, honestly, I never trust him. He will never deliver the real hope and real change this country needs. He IS INEXPERINCED. IT SHOWS TOO MANY TIMES AND HE CAN'T HANDLE THIS NATION.
Obama's supporters should realized that they are chasing and cheering an empty shallow image. This guy has nothing to offer, except some speech.
"Hillary has held a double digit lead over Obama in teh national polls since January - why haven't those numbers changes?"
csh, IL

...They haven't changed because the candidates aren't running a NATIONAL campaign yet.  That's why all national polls these days are a joke.  If you looked at Iowa and NH polls before any campaigning took place Hillary was ahead by 20 points, too.  It's just name recognition.
"Obama's supporters should realized that they are chasing and cheering an empty shallow image. This guy has nothing to offer, except some speech."
Maryann

You believe that?  Have you read his proposals?  (Economic, health care..)  He's offering them.  And they aren't speeches.  And they aren't written with image in mind.  He is our one opportunity to have a president that not only has solid ideas, but has the ability to work across the isle and get them done.
It'll be interesting when McCain is forced to submit his campaign funds for the 4th quarter. "Best funding since July." What !? Hahahha!
Keep at look out for David Shuster, I watched him this morning giving his assessment of the Iowa Polls that has Obama leading; he basically dismissed the polls as not being authentic but excepted the same polls the had John McCain moving up.  He shows why you can't completely trust the media... Maybe if David Shuster attended someone else's campaign besides John Edwards' then he probably wouldn't come off as so BIAS..

His distain of Senator Obama is apparent

Obama supporters stay strong the are gunning for this man.....
Hillary doesn't inspire people to see issues her way. She is not persuasive unless you already agree with her. A good President brings people around to his point of view. Obama has that ability to persuade because you get the feeling, unlike with Bush, that Obama is willing to consider a different point of view. He can see the merits of an opposing argument, and that makes him that much more persuasive in the long run. He would make a great President because he is a synthesizer, a communicator, and a visionary.
I love how any poll that has Hillary ahead or increasing her lead just MUST be inaccurate, but any poll that shows Obama ahead or increasing his lead MUST be totally correct.

I've said all along tha, generally speaking, polls are more or less worthless largely because they can be too easily manipulated.  I stand by that, no matter who the poll de jour shows being in the lead.
You can disbelieve polls all you want.  But what I understand from people to whom I have spoken in New Hampshire, John McCain is definitely on the rise and just may have pulled ahead of Mitt Romney.
A vote for Hillary is a vote for Republicans.
Polls schmols.  One can find a poll or survey to address ANY point of view. They are meaningless. McCain sold his political soul to the Bushes years ago.  While I admire many things about the man, he is clearly perpetually angry in the unrighteous anger sense. I wouldn't personally want to see such an angry man as leader of the free world. Some public flashes of his temper are scary.
The reason people believe the Des Moines Register poll is because this last pre-caucus poll is considered the "gold standard" of Iowa Caucus polls, with an amazing accuracy rating. As an example, they were able to nail the 2004 surprise Kerry/Edwards/Dean finish. If Barack Obama has a seven point lead - well outside the margin of error - in THIS well regarded poll, it is a very strong indicator that he will win. As to this other poll in NH, all of the pundits like Chuck Todd, David Shuster, Chris Matthews, Howard Fineman, etc. have consistently said that all bets are off AFTER Iowa. In other words, whoever wins in Iowa will get a big boost in the polls. So they have said from day one that any poll in another state taken right before Iowa isn't very reliable.
I have to agree with the above poster who said David Shuster is overtly biased against Obama and biased in favor of Edwards. It is soooo... obvious. And unprofessional. He slants every single story to Edwards' - and sometimes Clinton's - advantage. But never, ever does he report in a fair way about Barack Obama. Even my husband, who doesn't watch MSNBC nearly as much as I do, asked me today after a report by Shuster "Why does this guy not like Obama?" He has lost all credibility with me. I just want reporting to be fair. And David Shuster is not being fair.
Hillary and Bill must not be allowed back in the White House.  Bill is  all about the game.  He loves politics for its own sweet sake.  Hillary is all about the power.    If she wins, God help this country and I give Bill a five year life expectancy...provided he helps her win a second term.
Sarah, Vienna, VA (Sent Tuesday, January 01, 2008 5:41 PM)

I will agree that the DMR poll is traditionally the gold standard.  This year, however, they are counting on a huge turnout from Independents and, to a lesser extent, Republicans.  Will they show up?  No one knows.  Same thing for the first-time caucus-goers.

It would be outstanding, no matter what the results, if the DMR, along with party officials and county auditors, are right and turnout sets record highs.  I'm just a little skeptical that it will actually happen.
