2004 Joe vs. 2008 Joe

From NBC's Mark Murray
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Four years ago, this reporter covered a longtime Democratic US senator from the Northeast named Joe -- Lieberman -- as he knocked on doors a day or two before the New Hampshire primary. Supporters and aides chanted, "Go, Joe, go" as he moved from house to house.

There was just one catch, though: From memory, the number of TV cameras and press was larger than the Lieberman supporters following their candidate, and they had a hard time finding Lieberman voters who would come to the door.

Today, another longtime Democratic senator from the Northeast named Joe -- Biden --who's running in the middle of the pack of his party's presidential field walked into to a popular downtown brewpub here, and the place was packed with a few hundred supporters. (The campaign later put the number at more than 500.)

"We want Joe!" the crowd chanted as the candidate entered the restaurant. "We want Joe! We want Joe!"

"What a great crowd. God love ya," Biden told the audience. "Good morning, Des Moines. Holy mackerel!" He then joked that if someone had told his grandfather that -- many years later -- his grandson, on New Years Day, would be in a bar packed with people who were all sober, he would have replied that that person was crazy.

Comparing Biden's and Lieberman's crowds isn't entirely fair -- one, after all, is running in the first contest here in Iowa, while the other put all of his chips in the second -- the difference does underscore the enthusiasm that's surrounding all the Democratic candidates running for president, front-runners or not. Indeed, as we said earlier today, someone like Biden is getting Romney-sized crowds.

In his speech, Biden addressed the polls that have Clinton, Edwards, and Obama in the lead. "The first and only poll that counts is Thursday night," he said, before talking about health care, education, global warming, and his plan for Iraq. And then when talking about Pakistan, he made a crack at Clinton's incorrect statement that Pervez Musharraf is on the ballot.

At the end of his speech, Biden remarked how voters and political analysts are boiling down the Democratic race to a contest of change versus experience. "It is so much more than that," he said. "If it is about experience, I win," adding that he's also been involved in plenty of change (citing his work on the Violence Against Women Act). "It is not about change versus experience. It is about action."

And, repeating an argument that Clinton likes to make, Biden said it's important to have a president who's ready from Day One. "I am ready to lead this country," he said.

for a minute I thought I was reading that that Joe the backstabber was attending joe Bidens campaign speech.I had heard that Joe the backstabber was campaigning for Mccain and was startled.Biden would make a great president same as all the Democratic candidates----
Joe is the most qualified candidate in the race. As Americans we need to look beyond the media driven race and choose the best candidate for the country.
It is unbelievable that Joe Biden is not competing for the lead in this race.  I blame it on the overblown media reports on his "gaffes" and long-windedness.  Personally, I'm ready for a President that doesn't measure every word and who can speak at length on the complicated topics of the day, without raping the grammar and creating words that don't exist.

Joe is right!
Joe is a jerk and will be an also ran once again next week.
For any who are interested, here is a YouTube video message Biden just released.

As always, he makes the case for why he should be president.  If we want real experience, Biden is the way to go.  If we want someone who truly can lead on day one, Biden is the way to go.  If we want someone who has good judgment, Biden is the way to go.  (Ask any of the candidates, including Obama, since they so frequently remarked in debates that Joe was right.)

Delaware Republican:

You seem lonely.
Joe is drawing frontrunner-like crowds because, despite what the media portrays, he's very much a frontrunner. A frontrunner in experience, solutions, and character. This is beginning to resonate in Iowa and around the country. And the more the media refuses to cover him the way they should, the more he will win the hearts and minds of the voters disenfranchised by that behavior.

Joe 0 8 !!
I've always liked Biden, but Obama's skills are more needed right now.  we need a working majority to accomplish anything domestically and Obama is most able to do that.  Because of his background, Obama is also best to restore our standing in the world and lead the country in a better foreign policy direction. Military strength will be balanced with increased diplomacy and won't reflexively be used first and foremost. I hoping Biden will urge his supporters to back Obama as second choice.
Iowans are still making up their minds.  They haven't found what they are looking for in the Clinton, Obama and Edwards.  The doubts are weighing heavy on their minds.  Experience and ability to take action is what this election is going to come down to and Joe Biden is the only candidate that can claim both of these traits.
Biden does appear to support Obama, he has harshly criticized both Edwards and Clinton and has never said anything negative al all about Obama.

That could be a nice ticket.
I read the linked article about Clinton not knowing the details of the Pakistani election.  Wow.  How can she honestly argue she knows what she's talking about after TWICE making an incorrect statement about an international crisis.
Laurie from St. Paul - are you insane?  Obama is the one  with skills above those of Biden?  You are a rube - I don't think 2 years of experience beat over 30 years and leading the senate foreign relations committee.  Check your facts again dear.
I think a Biden-Obama ticket would be ideal. That's a real combination of good experience and change.

Unfortunately, the media will not let Biden win.
A group of independent Biden supporters have launched a website www.Dough4Joe.com. with the theme "Promises To Keep."

Taking their theme from the title of Senator Joe Biden's New York Times bestseller, this group of the Senator's supporters in his bid for the presidency have taken on-line pledge drives to a higher level.

No starry symbols–no quotes from great Americans–no fireworks or missiles going off greet you as enter this realm of presidential dignity and comportment. The Biden supporters who built this site feel that while other candidates need "window dressing," their candidate does not.

The group hopes to raise $2 million dollars through a network that spans the entire country. Consistent with their "promises" theme, the group calls upon those who visit and pledge to ". . . make 2008 the year we keep our promises. That's a New Year's resolution worth keeping." For that reason, they have chosen January 1, 2008 as their target date for direct contributions to Senator Biden's campaign-in a very telling display of their level of confidence in Joe Bidens ability to win over voters in the State of Iowa.

In this age of "hedge funds" and other groups packing the end of December with all sorts of fundraising stunts, it is refreshing though not at all surprising to observe that Joe Biden's supporters see no need to hedge their bets.

The simple eloquence of the first line of the message conveys this same dignified tone as it greets and informs the visitor, "You have come here seeking a leader; you shall leave here having led."

He has my vote. He is going to crack the top three in Iowa, I think. Go Joe!
Joe Lieberman discovered his old Democratic party didn't give a lick about homeland security or the economy. Instead, the Democrats just wanted to hide in their rooms and complain. Even a north-east liberal like Joe L. could see the writing on the wall, and he left the party and the people that support the Democrats. Welcome to the winning side Senator Lieberman!
If the Dems don't nominate Joe, it will be a huge mistake.  This is the guy who will take the white house hands down from the GOP.  They are scared to death of running against this guy.  He's intelligent, he's experienced, he's well liked among his peers and world leaders alike, and every time he talks about anything that matters, he makes sense.  On the other hand, the GOP and their mouth pieces are licking their chops at Clinton and Obama.  They will have a field day with them and will, in an election that shouldn't even be close after the last 8 years, beat them and beat them soundly.  Give America Joe as their Democrat candidate, or give America another republican president and more of the same.
I hope Joe does well in Iowa, but hope never fills the pocketbook, can't wait for the results, looking forward to the verbal boxing matches on this site after thursday.
GOOOOOOOOO IOWANS give us some good picks, we are counting on you to get the ball rolling.
Hows the weather holding up out there?
Joe IS ready to lead, and in fact, is already leading the way in alerting we the people about Pakistan during a recent debate (he's been warning Bush about it for years), leading with an approved plan to exit Iraq without leaving chaos behind, leading on Darfur -- the list goes on.  This is the man we need to help us and the rest of the world begin to heal.  In every area, his credentials and records dwarf the other candidates'.  Issue by issue, area by area, Joe comes out the leader.

Nice story!

I must most respectfully disagree. With respect to foreign policy, Senator Biden has a clear advantage over all the other candidates.
Biden has the qualities and experience our country needs right now.

Go Joe!

Right now it is a balmy 5 degrees...which drops to a blissful -16 if you count the windchill.
When it comes to what's going on today around the globe, because Joe Biden is touted as our best foreign policy mind in Washington, it is essential...it is CRITICAL that Joe Biden become our next President. We have men and women around the globe spilling their blood and giving up their lives. Armageddon in the Middle East, turmoil in Pakistan (a nuclear power), we have leaders of Iran, Iraq, Syria, Israel, Turkey, North Korea, China and now Russia that MUST be dealt with. We have muslim extremists that want us dead. And if we DO NOT establish some type of resolution regarding our global affairs, we will not have a country ANYMORE. It is ridiculous to believe that we will be able to continue with a "normal American way of life", if we do not take care of our foreign difficulties. Then and ONLY then can we really concentrate on our domestic issues and address them properly. We are spending lives and spending ALL of our resources abroad and THIS MUST STOP.

Joe Biden is the only one that can mend our desperate, broken nation...this broken world. The importance of having a bright and experienced foreign policy mind in our Oval Office calling the shots cannot be overstated in these dire times. This should be the SOLE issue for this next Presidential election, but the people of this country are busy being enamored with sound bites and magazine covers, and constant media coverage of the so called "front runners" who don't have a tenth of experience of Joe Biden.

People of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, please, let's get it right this time. America needs your foresight.

lieberman ran as an independent because the democrats voted him out-----republicans voted for him because they knew he would always vote on their side-----do you think Mccain will pick him as his vp?Judas Joe
Joe Biden is the only democratic candidate that I would vote for.  I may not agree with him on every issue, but he would be an excellent choice as president.  However, if and when clinton or obama get the dem nod, I will most certainly vote republican, as usual.
I'm sorry: who?
Laurie in St. Paul: I have to ask, what skills does Obama have? What foreign policy experience can he claim other than living overseas as a child???? Just asking....Hillary '08
I must admit that I fell victim to the national media telling me that Joe Biden didn't stand a chance, and thus I supported Barack Obama. However, since the issues here in America and abroad have taken a drastic turn for the worst, it is my obligation to once again support my original choice for president. Joe Biden is that man. Although he is not supported by the main-stream media, he is the most trust-worthy and honest candidate. Too many times have I heard that Joe Biden can't make it. I used to be one of the nay-sayers myself. But we have serious problems, and we need a serious candidate to solve them. I urge you to join me. I might not be able to elect Joe Biden, and you might not be able to elect Joe Biden. But together, we can become a catalyst for providing this country with what it really needs. It's time for honesty. It's time for integrity. It's time for Joe Biden.
Barack Obama:

In 2004 he said to Tim Russert on Meet the Press that his foreign policy wouldn't be any different than George W. Bush's!!!!!

He voted "present" on over 70% of his votes in the Illinois legislature.

Has NO foreign policy experience, and what is worse, he has NO knowledge of foreign policy.

Does not know that "federalism" is called for in the Iraqi constitution.

Has never passed legislation in the Senate.

Does not even speak on the Senate floor in large part because he doesn't have the respect of the rest of Congress and also because he doesn't have much to say.

What has he done to be worthy of votes???

Most importantly if he was asked today what he will doing on these issues he has NO plans, concrete ideas, or stances.

Iraq: none
Pakistan: none
Afganistan: none
Immigration: none
Education: none
Health Care: none
Energy independence: none

C'mon folks...this guy lacks plans, experience, decision making ability, and respect from domestic  and foreign leaders. He is not a leader, or statesman. Barack Obama is just a slick politian. Mark my words....Barack Obama is going nowhere.
Come on Joe!  A lot of us are pulling for you across the country.  My husband wants to vote for you when he sends his absentee ballot from his 15 month "all expense paid trip (by Uncle Sam of course) to Iraq".
Joe Biden has been saying he is ready to lead from day 1 a lot longer then Clinton.
The line "someone like Biden is getting Romney-sized crowds" really made my day. I am fully convinced that the best presidential candidate has a good chance to be the next president.
Denny, are you doing a Mike Gravel impression?

Biden's going to rock the caucus. Right on everything, and will put any contender to shame in a debate.
Regarding Laurie's claim that Obama is most likely to generate the "working majority" we need -- give me a break, Joe Biden has been accomplishing great things in his career by working WITH the opposition to generate consensus and get things done like the Violence Against Women Act, the Crime Bill, and his plan for Iraq that passed with a majority of Republican Senators voting for it.
Joe says it best, GET UP!

Biden is THE candidate to lead the United States.
Cathy, Upstate NY says: Laurie in St. Paul: I have to ask, what skills does Obama have? What foreign policy experience can he claim other than living overseas as a child???? Just asking....Hillary '08

I guess people are asking the same questions of Hillary. Clinton and Obama (and you can throw in Edwards) are three of the most inexperienced people to ever run for president.
Nice Shelby, I wanted to say the exact same thing about Laurie's comment that Obama can best unite a working majority and give the US some credit back in world politics.  Why?  Because he told you he could?  Biden has a record of getting things done and Shelby stated some results above.  Check out his website to see more.  www.joebiden.com

Don't just buy into the hype this year.
Mark Murray: Delaware is in the Northeast??
By all means, Joe Biden.
I think President Joe!
Biden would make a great president!
Biden would make a great president!
Here in Iowa, I smelled something different than hogs in the cold air today. It had the sweet smell of an upset headed by Joe Biden!
It's refreshing to read so many positive comments about Joe Biden.  I've been saying all along that he's the most qualified candidate in either party to lead this country ESPECIALLY given our low standing in the eyes of the world.  Biden's experience and knowlege of foreign affairs runs rings around what either Hillary or Obama can offer us.  Also, his style is not off-putting.  He is intelligent and not wishy-washy in his approach.  He comes up with proposals, solutions, ideas.  And these are based on fact and experience and history.  He'd be the best man for the job.  Why isn't he running at the head of the pack?  Beats me!
I love Joe Biden!
But I just don't think he is going to make it.

My dream ticket - Obama/Biden!! That would be unstoppable!!
Kathleen, Vermont.

Let's see, America got hit during a what?  Ah yes...an incompetent Republican President's administration.  Who is soft on Homeland Security?  No one but the Republicans who have weakened the U.S. in all areas.

Biden would be an excellent President, and I truly hope he does well in Iowa.  Would be lovely to have a President who could answer questions without having to be taught the answers four words at a time.  Would also be nice to get all the coloring books of the maps of the world out of the White House.  Wouldn't you hate to be the one having to tutor Shrub?
I can vote either Biden or Dodd. I think the debates have clearly demonstrated they are the only two who truly understand the issues facing this country. I lean toward Biden because I like a guy who gives straight answers and isn't afraid to ruffle feathers every now & then. I'm not certain how three lightweights like Clinton, Obama, and Edwards became front-runners. Media must think we (the voting public) are idiots - and after reelecting Bush in 04, who could blame them.
With all due to respect to Ron Paul (the Don Quixote of the Republican party) for challenging the Iraq disaster, Joe Biden strikes me as the most qualified candidate to run for U.S. President I have seen in many years (perhaps because there have been so many lightweights for so long). He reminds me of Pierre Trudeau, the greatest (Canadian) PM in my lifetime and the only one to earn my respect. The whole world may benefit if he becomes US President, if he is not thwarted from doing the job once he's in it. His long experience in the Senate may help ensure he's not.

Joe Biden is the only candidate running with the experience to lead from day one, and the credentials to beat any republican.  Iowa - please send us Joe Biden!
Joe Biden is going to surprise a lot of people.  Exceed expectations which will finally get him the coverage he deserves.  I live in Georgia but flew up to Iowa last Friday to volunteer for Joe. Those of you who are not in Iowa, please do not be deceived by the main stream media.  I am 56 years old so it takes a lot to get me excited...Despite the dismissal of his candidacy by the MSM, Joe is getting his message across to the good people of Iowa.  Stay tuned!
