Obama co-chair a state lobbyist

Posted: Wednesday, January 02, 2008 5:18 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan and NBC’s Mark Hudspeth
Obama's campaign proudly announced today the endorsement of former South Carolina Gov. Jim Hodges who will join his campaign as a national co-chair.

But the endorsement of Hodges may raise eyebrows among those who support Obama because he strongly decries lobbyists on the stump, frequently saying that he will not let them work in his White House or set the agenda in Washington.

Hodges is the founder of Hodges Consulting Group, a state-based lobbying firm he started in 2003. The firm is a subsidiary of Kennedy Covington Lobdell & Hickman, L.L.P, a law firm that represents clients in North Carolina and South Carolina.

Earlier this week, after Edwards vowed that no lobbyists would work in his administration, he was criticized because a key supporter and fundraiser was a state lobbyist. The Obama campaign wrote this Tuesday in an e-mail to reporters on Edwards’ plan: “Early in this campaign, Barack Obama introduced the furthest-reaching lobbying reform proposal of any candidate in this race, and we appreciate that John Edwards is now following his lead. The truth is, in his six years as a U.S. Senator, John Edwards did not propose or accomplish a single thing to reduce the power of lobbyists while Barack Obama passed the most sweeping lobbying reform since Watergate."

Hodges Consulting describes itself on its Web site as “well positioned to offer highly effective lobbying services and unparalleled state budget expertise. Hodges Consulting Group can also provide federal representation to clients."

Though Obama has also said that he won't take federal PAC and lobbyist money on his campaign, he does take money from state based lobbyists as previously reported by First Read.

Obama's co-chair in New Hampshire, Jim Demers, is a state based lobbyist for the pharmaceutical and financial services industries amongst others.   Michael Bauer, a member of Obama's LGBT steering committee, is a state based lobbyist in Chicago. And in Nevada, Obama's campaign also has three state based lobbyists who play senior advising roles in August last year.

When asked by reporters on the call why Hodges could work with the campaign even though he is a lobbyist, campaign manager, David Plouffe, said the campaign's policy for limiting lobbyists' influence applied to taking money only from federal registered lobbyists and PACs.

Obama also has said that no lobbyists can regulate industries they were working for in his White House for two years and that they cannot work for lobbyists after leaving his White House for the remainder of his tenure.   and that they cannot go lobby for an industry that t

Obama, however, has justified taking money from state based lobbyists and working with them.

"Because I have no power in this state, so I'm not influenced in any way by somebody who's lobbying at the state level,” he told NBC's Sacramento affiliate in August. “The main thing that we're trying to avoid is any perception that somehow those who are doing business in Washington have an influence on my agenda."

*** UPDATE *** NBC's Domenico Montanaro adds that Hodges is, in fact, a registered federal lobbyist, a search of the Senate Office of Public Records Lobbying Disclosure Act Database shows. He registered as such on June 1, 2007.

Elizabeth Edwards scond racist rant shows campaign frustation

"There was a New York Times article fairly early in the race," she said. "It had a picture of Obama with an Afro — that a lot of people had then, it was nice looking, not odd looking — at Harvard Law School, being asked to voice an opinion at a meeting of people with respect to tenure for African-American professors. He spoke, and spoke eloquently, and when he left, both sides felt he agreed with them."

Why haven't these reporters figured out the difference between a state and federal lobbyist yet?  Why is this even an article?  All it does is highlight the media's ignorance.
HAPPY NEW YEAR ! hillaryclinton.com
John Edwards is the ONLY candidate who has NEVER taken money from Washington Lobbyists or PACs. For his senate race, Obama accepted over $1.2 million from them. The only reason he's not accepting that money now is because John Edwards made it an issue. On this issue, like so many others, Obama is following Senator Edwards' lead, rather than leading himself. Which is why I'll be caucusing for John Edwards.
And they say Edwards is a hypocrite. After a win tomorrow, Edwards will seperate himself from the rest of the pack.
Unless you have made no mistakes in your life
Be careful of the stones that you throw
Hank Williams aka Hank the Drifter
Edwards takes money from unions.  What's the difference?  Unions are nothing more than lobbyist organizations for organized labor.  So all you Edwards supporters can get off your high horses.
There is a huge difference between having a lobbyist work FOR you (i.e. YOU telling -them- what to do), and having a lobbyist TARGET you (THEM telling -you- what to do)....

The first involves the politician running the show.  The second involves the lobbyist running the show.

I don't see a problem here?
<b>Kisha -</b> What the heck does the description of a hairstyle, during a particular era, have to do with lobbyists and this report?  Hit and run statements,  from Obama supporters, taking statements out of context, doesn't help his campaign.  BTW, you obviously didn't live through those times.  Whites wore that hairstyle as well.
Sandra, you may want a 2nd choice. Sen. Edwards will be gone by then
I previously was a registered state-lobbyist similar to Mr. Hodges.  I was required to register under state laws based upon the number of days I spent lobbying members of the state legislature.  I was not, however, required to register as a federal lobbyist because I did not "walk the halls of Congress" on a daily or weekly basis.  I did however meet with members of my state's congressional delegation when back in the district and four or five times a year in Washington. I was on a first name basis with chiefs of staff from every member of our congressional delegation. And I, as every other state lobbyist I have ever known, discussed federal issues with congressmen and their staffs.  All within the law.   Did I have influence over their voting...who knows?  But it is not reasonable to suggest that state-registered lobbyists do not advocate issues on the federal level.  In fact, many associations would argue that state-lobbyists were many times more effective than federal lobbyists because they lobbied "back home" in the district as well as in Washington.

My point...both Obama and Edwards are parsing words to suggest they stand for changing the system, when in fact they are already showing us the loopholes they will create.  So much for politicians who plan real change.
There was a piece on Hiffingtonpost.com, saying that aides of Bidden and Richardson told them if thier candidates don't reac viability they should support Obama.  The support keeps rolling in.

Also it turns out that Hillary is a scab, she is crossing the picket line tonight to appear on Letterman, so much for her support of Unions.
I for one am mystified about how we exaggerate inconsequential issues and stake out all or nothing positions.  The fact of the matter is, regardless of which candidate you support, that the only way to truly rein in the outlandish control that many PACs and special interest groups wield is to turn their Washington representatives against them.  Using consultants like Gov. Hodges as messengers/go-betweens to give these special interests warning will give them a chance to "get with the program."  In order for this to work and keep our economy running smoothly it's important that the next president is honest and of strong conviction, whoever he or she may be.  Relying on former state officials turned lobbyists to coordinate state fundraising for their campaigns makes complete sense strategically and is irrelevant to their abilities to lead.
Nadeem, get your facts straight.

Letterman's company, which runs his show, made a separate deal with the writers' union and his writers are back at work.  There's no picket line there to cross. (Also, Senator Clinton isn't appearing live anyway, she just taped a message).
Edwards is a phony with a contrived populist front.
“The main thing that we're trying to avoid is any perception that somehow those who are doing business in Washington have an influence on my agenda."
Obama once again takes pragmatic approach.  I imagine many knowledgeable and good people make their living as a lobbyists. Why cut off his campaign or future administration from thousands in this industry by unnecessarily banning state lobbyists as well. I wish reporters would report more objectively on facts rather than scribe contradictory quotes from competing campaigns. How about it. Who has a record of passing ethics/lobbyists reform legislation? Who campaigned on this issue first? Was Edwards talking about this in 2004?
Lobbyist working on a campaign is okay. The difference is what they do in the White House. Just about everyone works on a campaign of various candidates(that is called democracy). Lobbying is a constitutionally protected right(petition). I know many people want them sent to a leper colony, but it cannot be done.
Howard Dean set the standard for going directly to the people for contribution(that is a route of donations that Barack Obama is following).
ps...John Edwards used his own money to fund his senate race; now he is using public financing.
Nadeem,

Letterman has worked out an agreement with his writers and they are returning to his show from today. So, there is no validity to your ignorant remarks.

Before you throw around irresponsible accusations make sure you are at least half-informed. Idiot!
Sweet scoop: Obama tapes message to Kenyans: "The way forward is not through violence." Developing
DES MOINES--White House hopeful Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), the son of a Kenyan who received a heros welcome when he visited his father's country in 2006, issued a plea Wednesday to the Kenyan people to stop the violence that erupted in the wake of a disputed presidential election.

On the day before the Iowa caucus, the first presidential vote, Obama taped a message while in Davenport, Iowa for the Kenyan people broadcast on the Voice of America.

"Despite irregularities in the vote tabulation, now is not the time to throw that strong democracy away. Now is a time for President Kibaki, opposition leader Odinga, and all of Kenya’s leaders to call for calm, to come together, and to start a political process to address peacefully the controversies that divide them. Now is the time for this terrible violence to end," he said in the message.

Obama spoke with Rice last night and with Mike Rannenberger, the U.S. ambassador to Kenya this morning. Rannenberg accompanied Obama on much of his Kenyan visit, which included a visit to his father's homestead near the city of Kisumu.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack declined to provide specifics leading up to the Obama taping

I'm sure Hillary will ask if she can make a tape too...because she meet them for lunch

John Edwards voted for No Child Left Behind. Voted against funding NO Child. Now he wants to fix it?
He voted for the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy -3 times.
He voted against the estate tax.
He voted for the Bankruptcy Ripoff bill('01).
He voted for bankruptcy reform which has hurt many lower income families in this country.
Edwards voted for the Packer Ban and the Right to Work bill.
He voted against restricting consolidation of Big Meat Packing..
He voted against public financing -2 times.
He vowed not to take public financing and now he has conveniently changed his tune and the party will carry this burden. There is no legitimate plan after Iowa.
He voted against the Wellstone VA funding amendment.
He voted for free trade in China.
He acted like he was critical of offshore tax shelters for the wealthy in 2004, and then in 2005 he worked as a consultant for the Fortress Investment Group whose hedge funds were incorporated in the Cayman Islands. They foreclosed on homes in LA and even Iowa.
Edwards voted for storing nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain in Nevada (which IMO Nevadans will not appreciate).
John Edwards has the worst environmental record according to the League of Conservation voters ratings? '59 for JRE----- 96 for Barack Obama'.

Edwards CO-SPONSORED  and promoted(in videotaped speeches) Lieberman's S.J.RES.46, the Iraq War Resolution, and also later voted for it in the full Senate to authorize the use of military force against Iraq.  KYL-LIEBERMAN comes to mind. The more I look into John Edwards' record, the more troubling it is. Because the support for the war has gone down, are these hawks trying to play both sides of the fence? He didn't read the NIE report and lied and said he had at one point.
He now has 2 workers that left his campaign and went directly to start 527s. Back in 2004, John Edwards asked GWB to ask 527 to stop.
And to whom do the trial lawyers contribute?  I know John Edwards doesn't turn that PAC money away.  By the way Edwards is my second choice.  However, I don't think that Nader type of nastiness brings people together.  Hillary btw takes more special interest money than any of the candidates running.
Obama '08
History will be made tomorrow here in Iowa. Fired up....ready to go. Obama 08.
Wait for blind Obama supporters parsing the word lobbyist now:-).

Obama , another politician who can fool illiterate Americans.

All politicians use lobbyist money. Some directly, some indirectly. I would rather be with someone who takes it directly and is being honest about it like Hillary.

Dishonest politicians like Obama can twist and parse the word lobbyist and agenda, but the fact is Obama fund raising still shows PAC money on his website. It is just coming thru different channels.
you reporters really must want to find ANY kind of dirt on senator obama. after 10 months of finding nothing, it must really hurt huh?

it's just sickening. nothing will stop this movement for change.

OBAMA 08
Lol, I don't think anyone is going to get anywhere with that charge against Clinton. "Special deals" aside, lets not lose sight of the fact this is only entertainment writers anyway. Maybe this comment will draw a little fire, but I think in our guts we all realize its not like a real union, in the sense that unions for coal miners and steel workers prevent otherwise lethal working conditions.

Honoring this picket line to me would be like honoring millionaire baseball players, just because they happen to call themselves a union and decided an average salary above seven figures wasn't quite enough. A labor union should be for people who labor, and to me its a stretch to apply that label to guys who play sports or sit around comfy workspaces writing jokes.
And to whom do the trial lawyers contribute?  I know John Edwards doesn't turn that PAC money away.  By the way Edwards is my second choice.  However, I don't think that Nader type of nastiness brings people together.  Hillary btw takes more special interest money than any of the candidates running.

Mitchell Feldman, Vestal, NY (Sent Wednesday, January 02, 2008 6:15 PM)

So what does that prove Mitchell? That hypocrisy has limits and if someone does 5 murders, it is ok but more than 5 is not allowed? So Obama can take 500K from lobbyist but since Hillary took 600K from lobbyist, we should vote for Obama?

Talk about illogical irrational blind cult followers.
A Democrat against Obama?  Who's the idiot?
If you listen closely to the speeches Obama has made, he states that he will not allow lobbyists to ‘run’ the White house or set the agenda in Washington. It would be nice if people [reporters] got things right because one word does make all the difference.
"When asked by reporters on the call why Hodges could work with the campaign even though he is a lobbyist, campaign manager, David Plouffe, said the campaign's policy for limiting lobbyists' influence applied to taking money only from federal registered lobbyists and PACs."

LOL. As if I, as a Federal Lobbyist, can not create a separate fund to siphon the money to Obama via a state lobbyist on my payroll? What a simple twisted way to get all the money from lobbying.

And some blind dumb Americans got fooled by this preaching of Obama?
The only thing obama is interested in changing his is savings account.

from uppermiddle class to down right rich
One things for sure, in a little over 24 hours, we'll find out who was most convincing. Will it be the former First Lady who is mired in scandall so much that the Republicans are likcing their chops at the very thought of her winning the nomination, the first term senator with a great message of hope but nothing much after that, or the man the hasn't stopped campaigning since '04 because he feels there are too many wrongs that need to be righted. Definately fired ukp and ready to go.
Oops...their goes Obama talking out both sides of his mouth again! Why is everything Saint Obama does considered perfect, but other candidates get crucified for every little thing? Obama is ALL talk, NO substance and will not win the nomination. Grown-up Americans can see the difference between a true leader and an inexperienced zealot pretending to know what he's doing. Joe Biden actually said recently that Obama's not ready to be President! Go Hillary...a true leader and our next President!!
FYI, David Letterman and the writers union made an agreement, so Mrs. Clinton is not crossing the picket line. All Democratic candidates have refused to cross the any picket line.
dig a little deeper on the edwards statement of not taking lobbyist money or pac money. you will find you are wrong. 2 weeks ago it came out that edwards has a lobbyist on staff. that person is a state lobbyist not a federal lobbyist. also, look into edwards association with the mellon family right now. always reserarcg first if possible.
I'm a Republican who has never voted for a Democrat presidential candidate (and almost definitely won't this time either).  That being said, I don't think Hillary is the anti-Christ some make her out to be.  The world won't end if she's elected (and if we're lucky, she'll be even more beneficial to the Republicans than was Bill).  Obama is likeable and seems genuine and honest as far as politicians go.  I like him, not his politics.  Again, not the end of the world.  As a Republican, my biggest fear is Edwards getting the nomination.  I think he is the most electable at the end of the day.  And I'd bet money that Obama will be on the ticket either at the top or as VP.  And that would be a good decision for Democrats to make.
Just in time...hillaryclinton.com

Tuck,Realityville,Ks (Sent Wednesday, January 02, 2008 6:31 PM)

LoL Tuck, a good one.

That's the message of hope!! And his cult followers are hoping they can remain lazy while things change with waving of a magic wand and while Hodges fills Obama's pockets thru Federal lobbying:-)
CHECK IT OUT, HILLARY CLINTON ON THE DAVE LETTERMAN SHOW. hillaryclinton.com
before this election john edwards was taking lobbyists and special interests money. go back to his senatorial campaign.

this year he has taken money from the lawyers of the american bar association. the aba lends it's support, but because the attorney's are allowed to show it as indidvidual donations instead of as an affiliate it is not considered lobbyist money(it is the same thing).

john says the words, but if you look through the smoke you can find complicity. if you check the background on the mellon's you won't say he isn't accepting special interests money. did you know that one of the association's in iowa is represented by edwards ex campaign manager and friend?

same dog just different spots. look folks, it takes a lot of money to win these camapigns.

john edwards hasn't known what it is like to be poor for over 20 years. he hasn't hungered for anything for a long time. i don't care where the money comes from as long as it is legal by voting law. i care about issues. don't let fast talk fool you. john did absolutely nothing for the poor when he was the senator. it doesn't mean he wouldn't e a good candidate though.
But lobbyists are people too, right? *wink, wink*

lol

Just trying to lighten the mood folks - can't wait to talk with you all after tomorrow! :)
HMMMMM, a federal lobbyist inside the campaign, looks like some one wants in from the beginning.
Can't have it both ways Mr. Obama.
My prediction for tommorrow
1. THE HILL
2.THE POPULIST JOHNNY
3. MR. OBAMA
4.JOEY
If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, won't be the first time, won't be the last.
At least I won't get my heart broken.
I don't think the world will come to an end if Hillary's elected.  I even think her nomination would benefit Republicans (and certainly her election would).  However, to say that Hillary is more experienced to be President than Obama is like saying Joe Montana's wife is more experienced than Adrian Peterson to be in the NFL.  I'm sorry, but Hillary is smart and articulate, but not much more experienced than Obama.  A non-issue if you ask me.
YOU GOT TO CHECK THIS OUT.. "UNBELIEVABLE"............hillaryclinton.com
The endorsement of Obama by Jim Hodges, the last Democratic governor there, should be huge news.  Similar to Vilsack's and Shaheen's endorsements of Clinton.  And especially notable given that Edwards touts his appeal to SC whites.

What's the deal with leading with his status as a lobbyist rather than with the fact that he's the most recent Democratic governor of John Edwards' native state???????
Wow ! I just checked it out..hillaryclinton.com
Three cheers fo Hillary !!! hillaryclinton.com
Obama said they are not FUNDING my campaign,  He didn't say they're not supporting him or endorsing him or campaigning for him.  They will get a seat at the table, but not buy every chair.  Which part of "No Washington Lobbyist" don't you understand?
All of the candidates have registered lobbyists working for their campaigns.
I wonder if Dennie wants to take back his 1 percent now? The heat is on BO and it is only just beginning. First Read, maybe you are beginning to take a real look at this guy. "Major endorsement from SC." translates into a looser in 2003 to a Republican then went into lobbying. Awesome! I am watching Hillary tonight on Letterman. BTW, how can you cross a picket line on video tape?
